Health / Human Head Transplants Could Become Areality By 2017 by felsunseg(m): 10:23am On Feb 27, 2015
Head transplants, or body transplants depending on how you look at them, are not just a thing of quirky horror movies. The first documented procedure was carried out back in the ‘50s when surgeon and transplant pioneer Vladimir Demikhov grafted the head and forelimbs of a puppy onto the body of a different dog. Disturbingly, he followed this with his more famous work, which involved the creation of two-headed dogs. Unsurprisingly, none of his animals lasted for more than a few days. While ethically questionable, these procedures ultimately led to the first successful head transplant on a monkey in 1970 by Dr. Robert White, who was apparently inspired by Demikhov’s work. Although White demonstrated the feasibility of the procedure, he didn’t bother to attempt to fuse the spinal cords of the donor monkey with the recipient, so it was paralyzed and couldn’t breathe without assistance.
Although little has been done subsequently, medicine has progressed by leaps and bounds since then. So much so that one neurosurgeon believes that the procedure could soon be carried out on humans, and he has just published an outline of what the surgery would potentially involve. According to the doctor, Sergio Canavero, the major obstacles to success—such as the risk of the body rejecting the head—can now be overcome thanks to modern medicine, and with a few further advances, the procedure could be ready as soon as 2017. That being said, just because it can be done, that does not mean it will—there are major ethical issues that would need to be considered before it can be approved. Those aside, this kind of dramatic surgery could offer hope to people whose organs are plagued with cancer, or those who have suffered major accidents. That’s why Canavero is now trying to recruit a team to further explore the possibility of such a technique and plans to announce the project later this year, according to New Scientist. So what would the surgery involve? First, the recipient’s head would have to be cooled to keep the cells alive, as would the recently deceased donor.
Next, the neck is cut into and the blood vessels are hooked up by a series of small tubes. After the spinal cords are neatly severed, the head is then moved onto the donor body, which is ready for the trickiest and most crucial part: joining up the ends of the spinal cords. To do this, Canavero suggests using a substance called polyethylene glycol, which would help fatty cell membranes meld together. The final part of the procedure involves stitching up the blood vessels and muscles before putting the patient into a coma for up to a month. After intense physiotherapy, the patient should be able to use their body and walk. Althoughthere is a risk of rejection, as with any transplant, Canavero points out that immunosuppressive drugs should prevent this from happening.
However, many of the surgeons that the New Scientist contacted said the idea sounded “too outlandish,'' while others simply refused to provide any remark at
all.
One of those who did comment was Harry
Goldsmith, a clinical professor of neurological surgery at the University of California, Davis, who said: ''This is such an overwhelming project, the possibility of it happening is very unlikely. I don't believe it will ever work.” Alongside the ethical considerations of such a surgery, some have expressed concerns that it could lead to people wanting to exchange their bodies for cosmetic reasons, so obviously if it does become legalized, strict regulations will have to be in place.
Since the idea has been met with some strong opposition by those in the field of medicine, and many believe it simply won’t work, it will be interesting to see what unravels over the next couple of years. http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/human-head-transplants-could-become-reality-2017

Health / Causes Of Breas.t Cancer. by felsunseg(m): 4:36pm On Feb 19, 2015
The body's cells reproduce themselves throughout
your lifetime, as tissues wear out and their cells are
replaced in a controlled manner.
Brea.st cancer - like all cancers - occurs when that control is lost and cells begin to divide at an unusually high rate.
No single trigger or cause has been identified
for brea.st cancer. Certain risk factors exist, though, that increase a woman's chance of developing it:

1. age - it's more common in women over 50

2. family history - if a woman's mother or sister had
the disease before menopause, this is occasionally associated with one of two genes linked to breas.t
cancer
3. previous breas.t cancer
4. family history of ovarian cancer
5. age of pregnancy - women who haven't had
children, or whose first child was born after age 30

6. age of menstruation - starting periods at a young
age (under 12 years old)
7. entering menopause later (over age 55) increases
breas.t cancer risks
8. recent research suggests that women who start smoking regularly within 5 years of the onset of
their menstrual periods are 70% more likely to
develop breas.t cancer before the age of 50 than
non-smokers
having
9. dense breas.t tissue
10. radiation treatment to the chest, especially before 30
years of age
11. alcohol consumption contributes to the risk of breas.t
cancer

12. hormone replacement therapy (HRT; estrogen plus
progesterone) increases the risk of breas.t cancer
slightly after 5 years of therapy
13. oral contraceptives increase risks slightly, if used
over many years
14. Obesity with excess caloric and fat intake.

Politics / Chief Olusegun Obasanjo Military/army Career (formal President Of Nigeria) by felsunseg(m): 3:19pm On Feb 19, 2015
In 1959, after completion of his military training, he
was commissioned into the Nigerian Army as a
Second Lieutenant and attached to British Battalions in
England and in Germany. A year later, he was
promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. As a soldier,
President Obasanjo held several command positions including service with the United Nations
Peacekeeping Forces in the Congo. In 1961, he
transferred from the Infantry to the Corps of
Engineering, and in 1963, was promoted to the rank of
Captain and appointed Commander Engineering Corps.
That year, he was elevated to the post of General Officer, commanding the Third Marine Commando
Division, where he conceived and immediately
launched “Operation Tail Wind” which helped to
bring the debilitating Nigerian civil war to an end. He
accepted the surrender of the Biafran forces in
January 1970. In 1975, Chief Obasanjo was appointed Federal Commissioner for Works, and also served as
Chief of Staff and second in command to Brigadier
Murtala Muhammed, following the coup of 1976. After
the assasination of Briadier Muhammed, he reluctantly
stepped into his shoes, but refused to renege on his
administration’s goals and objectives. In 1977, he formed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
(NNPC), organised the second World Black and African
Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC ’77), set up the
Corrupt Practice Bureau; and through his
government’s efforts, independence was achieved
for Angola and later Zimbabwe. In 1979 he was decorated with the highest national award, Grand
Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR). To cap it
off, he became the first Head of State on the African
continent to ever relinquish power to a democratically
elected government peacefully and voluntarily. Please sign up to receive updates: Enter your email address to subscribe for

What's New?

Some people were actually surprised when the
original Motorola Moto E was released without a front-
facing camera. How many smartphones come without
front-facing snappers these days? Very few.
However, the omission was forgivable given the very
low price at which the Android device was sold. The good news is that the new Motorola Moto E is fitted
with a front-facing camera. The second-generation device will also come with the
newest Android 5.0 (Lollipop), compared to the
Android 4.4 (KitKat) that was provided for the original
version of the device. The screen of the Motorola Moto
E 2015 is slightly larger at 4.5 inches. The revamped
budget Android smartphone also now comes with 4G LTE connectivity support. In addition, the device's
design has been tweaked a little, with its internal
memory upgraded to 8GB from 4GB. Other Specs and Features The Motorola Moto E 2015 is virtually the same as the
previous device in terms of its other specifications and
features. The phone uses a 1.2GHz Qualcomm
Snapdragon 200 quad-core processor with Adreno
302 graphics. It supports microSD of up to 32GB.
The new Moto E retains RAM capacity of 1GB and a non- removable 7.3Wh (1980mAh) battery. Like the original
smartphone, the revamped version also has a
resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, though the display is now a bit bigger at 4.5-inch. It was thought that consumers would be able to have
first look of the new Moto E at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 taking place early March in Barcelona.
However, the device has reportedly started going on
sale in the US, where carrier-branded versions go for
around $100 (N20,000). Pricing & Availability Motorola Moto E (2015) is not yet available in Nigeria,
though it may have gone on sale in a couple of
countries. We have no information on pricing and
availability for Nigeria. Motorola Moto E (2015) Price in Nigeria is expected to range from N25,000 to N35,000 at launch. Motorola Moto E (2015) Specs

ogs okalo or okola, were u able to check for ur admission status on the jamb site back then in 2011, if not am sure it was the school that gave u admission, may be tru collecting their poastume form or tru the help of someone u knw, if i guess rite then u should have ur own admissoon letter printed from the school website or giving to u by d school authority, if u still have it no problem. If u don't, get a computer geek to forge one for u, and explain to them how u got ur admission. The worst day will do is to ask u to pay some amount of money like 5 to 10k for the jamb. That is hw itss been done for student who enter with direct entry or supplimentry list.

against tumor cells by stopping them to divide further.
These proanthocyanidins and high copper content in
cashew nuts help fight against cancerous cells and keeps you away from colon cancer. This is one of the
major cashew nut benefits.

2. Healthy Heart: Cashews contain low fat content when compared to
other nuts and that too in the oleic acid form which is
very healthy for heart. They are cholesterol free and
the antioxidants present keeps you away from heart
diseases .

3. Lowers High Blood Pressure: Cashew nuts lower your blood pressure with the help of magnesium present in them.

4. Helps Hair: Copper is the mineral which helps your hair get that
color. So if you take cashews which are full of copper
content, you can get that black hair that you always
wished for.

5. Healthy Bones: Like calcium, magnesium is also important for bone
health which is the main content in cashew nuts

6. Healthy Nerves: Magnesium is stored on the bones surface which
prevents calcium from entering the nerve cells and
thus keeps the blood vessels and muscles relaxed.
Insufficient amount of magnesium can lead calcium to
enter the blood vessels leading them to contract. It also leads to high blood pressure, migraine headache etc.

7. Prevents Gallstones: Daily intake of cashewnut can reduce the risk of
developing gallstones up to 25%.

8. Helps in Weight Loss: Even though cashew nuts are considered as fats, it
contains good cholesterol. So contrary to popular belief, those who eat cashews at least twice a week
gain less weight when compared to those who eat
less.

for many enzymes.

10. Helps Digestion: Cashew nuts help in growth and development, nucleic
acid synthesis and digestion

pantothenic acid, thiamin, niacin etc. These vitamins

in cashew nuts is very good for bones. So it gives
healthy teeth as well as strong gums to hold them .

13. Pleasant sleep: After menopause, these cashew nuts can give you
relaxed and pleasant sleep during nights.

14. Free Radicals: Cashew nuts help our body to utilize iron properly and
eliminate free radicals, which cause health problems.

and protect us from macular degeneration . Now that you know the health benefits of Cashew
nuts, ensure that you eat a few once every week I am
sure you already love them.

Culture / Re: Why Did Yoruba Culture Survive In Latin America And Not Igbo Or Others by felsunseg(m): 10:28pm On Feb 09, 2015
Abagworo:

Igbo, Yoruba and other recently formed identities are very much alive in South America. Maybe the thread was started by someone who is not aware that the Calabari/Carabali is very much active in South America even more than other groups. Calabari comprises mostly of Igbo, Efik/Ibibio and Ijaw who were known as one ethnic group then with the subgroups used as a suffix to explain the specific origin.

A great diversity of peoples brought to the Americas from the Niger Delta and Cross River Basin were labeled by merchants as Carabalí, as Cuban historian Des- champs discovered: “The carabalí. The tribes brought to Cuba under this denomi- nation are innumerable . . . part of those [“carabalí’] who founded cabildos respond- ed to the following denominations: Abalo, Acocuá, Agro, Apapá, Bibí, Bogre, Bogre Isuama, Abate Singlava, Brícamo, Ecunaso, Ibo Induri, Isicuato, Isiegue, Isuama, Isuama Aballa Ocuite, Isuama Ibi, Isuama Isiegue, Isueche, Oquella, Ososo, OsosoEche, Ososo Omuma, Oxó, Ugri, Unigini, Aballa Otopa, Isuama Umofina, Isuama Osulerisna, Orú, Elugo, Orate, Bané, Yudusi.”13 Of this partial list of thirty-three ethnic denominations, only five survived into the twentieth century as components of the Abakuá society (Efí, Efó, Orú, Bibí, Suáma); today there are two main ethnic lineages: Efí and Efó, with Orú as an important third lineage.
