Foreign Affairs / Iowa Caucus Results: Mitt Romney Edges Rick Santorum In Iowa by freepeople: 2:38pm On Jan 04, 2012 |
Mitt Romney edged Rick Santorum by a mere eight votes in Tuesday’s Iowa caucuses — a margin that amounted to a tie in the crucial opening act of the 2012 presidential race and propelled the newly reshaped contest to New Hampshire and beyond. After a three-way dead heat for much of the night, Romney and Santorum moved slightly ahead of Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who finished in third place. The race-within-the-race between the two top contenders stretched until 2:30 a.m. Eastern. The final count, as reported by Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn, showed Romney winning 30,015 votes to Santorum’s 30,007 — or 24.6 percent to 24.5 percent. Paul finished with 21.4 percent. Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann finished in the fourth, fifth and sixth slots — a result that prompted Perry to announce that he would return to Texas to decide whether he has a “path forward” in the race. The tally — the first actual votes cast in the hotly contested GOP nomination fight — came after a final frenetic day of charges and counter-charges and strategic moves that give more clarity about the plot lines and main characters in the primary campaign’s next two chapters, in New Hampshire and South Carolina. The 809 Iowa caucuses deliver no actual delegates — the state’s 25 delegates to the Republican convention will be awarded by a state convention in June. And while the Iowa tally will give significant momentum to the top of the leader board, the state’s quadrennial caucuses are an unreliable indicator of a party’s eventual nominee. While Barack Obama’s victory here in 2008 helped propel him to the presidency, eventual GOP standard-bearer John McCain finished an unimpressive fourth in the GOP contest. Still, the spinning will be fierce to try to turn each candidate’s showing in Iowa — success or just bare survival — into a roadmap for triumphs in other states. Given the astonishing closeness of the race, both Romney and Santorum will earn bragging rights and take significant momentum to the contests down the road. Romney, whose campaign had grown increasingly confident about a win or a very strong finish in a state that broke the former Massachusetts governor’s heart four years ago, called the result “a great victory for us” while also congratulating Santorum and Paul. “This is a campaign night when America wins,” Romney said. But Romney’s campaign also tried to demonstrate its organizational and tactical advantages in the primaries to come. Romney aides announced that the campaign was going up with ads in Florida, which holds a Jan. 31 primary. A source also confirmed that Romney had purchased nearly $260,000 of TV airtime in South Carolina. Santorum, whose campaign was viewed as all but hopeless just weeks ago, will have to prove that his Iowa-only strategy can quickly pivot to New Hampshire and beyond, where he has spent little time and put together little staff. “Thank you so much, Iowa,” Santorum told a boisterous rally just past midnight. “By standing up and being bold and leading, leading with that burden and responsibility that you have to be first, you have taken the first step of taking back this country.” Iowa Christian activist Bob Vander Plaats, one of Santorum’s prominent endorsers in the state, said that results showed it’s time for other conservative candidates to consider taking one for the team and rallying around the former Pennsylvania senator. Foreign Affairs / Iowa Caucus Results: Angry Newt Gingrich Bolts After Bad Finish by freepeople: 2:34pm On Jan 04, 2012 |
Newt Gingrich couldn’t get out of Iowa any faster unless he’d left before the caucuses started. After an embarrassing fourth-place finish — a dramatic fall for a candidate who enjoyed front-runner status just two weeks ago — Gingrich gave an angry speech and his demoralized campaign jetted out of Des Moines on a charter flight before the clock even struck midnight in Iowa. His plane headed to New Hampshire, but his campaign is headed for uncertainty. After collapsing in Iowa under the weight of a barrage of negative Mitt Romney ads — not to mention his campaign’s slow, disorganized response to the attacks — Gingrich will land in the Granite State running fourth in polls there as well, just six days before the Jan. 10 primary. After days of sounding sullen on the campaign trail, Gingrich delivered a heated speech Tuesday night and his tone dripped noticeably with anger as he talked about Romney. “We are not going to go out and run nasty ads, but I do reserve the right to tell the truth,” he said, getting the loudest response of his speech before less than 100 supporters. “If the truth seems negative, that may be more a comment on his [Romney’s] record than the nature of politics.” Gingrich also went after Paul: “His views on foreign policy, I think, are stunningly dangerous for the survival of the United States.” The only candidate who bested him that he didn’t criticize was Rick Santorum, whom he congratulated on his showing. After New Hampshire, Gingrich hopes his conservative appeal will give him inroads in South Carolina’s Jan. 21 primary, but the space on the right in South Carolina is in flux now with Santorum surging, Rick Perry reassessing his campaign and Michele Bachmann limping out of Iowa. The final day in Iowa was a symbol of how quickly the wind went out of Gingrich’s sails. His campaign bus departed from Cedar Falls before the caucuses even began. He took one of the first flights out of the Hawkeye state, chartering a flight from Des Moines to Manchester. After the Transportation Security Administration required the flight’s passengers to go through security, the campaign was forced to cut short his time at the supporter party. After battling a bout of the flu, Gingrich never appeared to fully get his fight back. And on the last day, somber crowds offered little excitement for a campaign that wasn’t trying to stoke enthusiasm. Jeremy Freeman, a Gingrich volunteer from Ames, said he was discouraged by Newt’s performance in the polls. “I thought Newt would be a little closer,” he said. “Attack ads actually work.” In New Hampshire, Gingrich has seen a similar drop in his popularity. He hold will a town hall in New Hampshire on Wednesday morning, followed by a full day’s schedule. But the last tracking poll from Suffolk University puts him in fourth place with only 9 percent of the vote. Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0112/71056.html |

^^^ You must be a medical professional. I'm quite impressed by your free usage of medical terms. As I mentioned previously, prepare for any eventuality. The outcome might not be favourable. Is the stent that was fitted to keep the bile flowing related to her present condition? If the answer is yes, then the tumour must be located at the head of pancreas. Head of pancreas is directly related to the outflow of bile into the intestine. Therefore, some tumour affecting the head of the pancreas is bound to occlude that outlet. Seems like the management is tending towards palliation. But from the picture you painted, I think the tumour is exocrine in origin. I wish her all the best. |

I sympathize with your relative. Pancreatic cancer is a worrisome tumour. Only 10-15% of pancreatic tumour are operable. 40-50% have advanced to involve the portal vein at the time of diagnosis. In surgery, we don't rush to operate on the pancreas since it contains some enzyme that can digest the tissues. Besides, pancreatic cancers has a narrow indication spectrum for surgery. Depending on the tumour stage at diagnosis, treatment can either be surgery, conservative or palliative. As I said before, the indications for surgery are narrow. You painted a picture of an advanced cancer, All the while her condition general health is deteriorating I don't love to say this, but I'm afraid that the treatment at this stage is palliation. That explains the delay on the side of doctors to operate. No need to waste your resources by travelling abroad since the prognosis is poor and they will still proffer the same advise. Moreover, the mean survival rate of this condition is 6-9 months. I pray that their diagnosis is wrong, but if it happens to be pancreatic cancer, I'm afraid to advise to get prepared for any eventuality. |

dasparrow: Madcow: Theblessed: oops! What a load of excrement! @dasparrow You are worse than Nazi eugenics. We have no choice of our physical appearance. Everyone of us has inalienable right to live a happy and fulfilling life. Inasmuch as it doesn't encroach into another persons right. The reason why human beings survived for thousands of years is due to our variation. Variety is the spice of life. No disease can wipe out all the human specie. Do you know that some people has the genetic make-up that makes them resistant to HIV infection? The decision of two consenting adults is none of your business. It doesn't matter whether she married a midget, AIDS patient, or terminal cancer patient @Madcow You own case has worse prognosis. if you are the OP, would you want your health status to limit your choice in marriage? The stigma attached to HIV in Nigeria is the reason why it will continue to spread. I have seen countless of couples in which one party is HIV +ve, while the other is -ve. Take Magic Johnson for example. As I said before, none of us has the right to question the decision of two consenting adults. So far as they are properly counselled of the benefits and risks of their choice. I think that you are the selfish, wicked and brainwashed fellow here. Your are brainwashed into believing that HIV is a monster virus. That's why, you are actively trying to win over people to your psyche with fear. @Theblessed I think we've met before. Still the same story. Your fungating ignorance seems to be inoperable. All these your bible quotes are inconsequential and unnecessary. Believe me, your miserable life is "hellish Health status". JaaizTech:God bless the womb that produced you. If I can get more of people like you, then, there is hope for this country. Sometimes, I'm amazed by the level of ignorance about vital health issues in this country. No wonder HIV continues to be a scourge in this country. HIV patients deserves our love and encouragement. It's unfair to stigmatize based on the health of an individual. @OP I commend you for coming here to seek for our advice. I'm must assure you that you are ok, healthwise. You are even healthier than some poster here who are apparently well. Continue to live positively. As far as I'm concerned, the wedding issue should be the least of your concern. You can opt for other pentecostal churches. I also commend you for notifying your partner about your health status. I must tell you that your wife-to-be is a rare breed. Live your life normally. Your help is on the way. Many promising research on the cure of HIV is on-going as I'm posting my comment. Some are in stage 3 of clinical trial, and in few yrs to come, the market will be flooded with drugs that can cure HIV. Have a belief that you will not die as a result of your present condition. Be compliant wit your medication and feed well. I can estimate that your serum titre of HIV virus is less than 1000, with that, your risk of transmission of the virus to your partner is markedly reduced. Ofcourse you can raise your family without sperrm washing. It is well with you. Remember that, tough times don't last, but tough men do. |

Health / Fda Clears Hiv Vaccine For Human Trials by freepeople: 4:25pm On Dec 23, 2011 |
FDA Clears HIV Vaccine For Human Trials December 22, 2011 6:36 AM DETROIT (WWJ) – An Ontario doctor is hopeful that a vaccine he developed can stop the transmission of HIV — the virus that causes AIDS. University of Western Ontario researcher Dr. Chil-Yong Kang said his treatment is the only one to use a “whole” genetically modified HIV virus that’s been killed, much like methods used for polio, rabies and flu vaccines. “We started our research on HIV and AIDS 20 years ago and over the last 10 years we have developed a vaccine. The vaccine is a prophylactic vaccine which is a preventative vaccine,” said Kang. So far, the vaccine has only been tested in monkeys, but the treatment has given doctors reason to be cautiously optimistic. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the vaccine for human trials, a process which will take about five years. “We need about 6,000 people to test to have statistically significant data, so we can compare a vaccinated and non-vaccinated group to see how effective this vaccine is for prevention of HIV infection,” said Kang. The first phase of trials lasts about one year and involves a group of 40 volunteers to ensure the vaccine is safe. The next phase lasts another year and involves about 600 volunteers in the high-risk categories for contracting HIV. The final phase involves 6,000 people in high-risk categories. Kang said volunteers will not receive the live HIV virus, but will be injected with the vaccine. Then, researchers will monitor their immune responses and wait for a natural infection. According to estimates from the UNAIDS Global Report 2010, around 30.8 million adults and 2.5 million children were living with HIV at the end of 2009. http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/12/22/fda-clears-hiv-vaccine-for-human-trials/ |

Either you observe or you contribute sensibly to a discussion. Nigerian doctors are doing great in the midst of difficult situation. My encounter with Eastern European trained doctors made me to understand the real meaning of the word "poorly-trained". I'm especially proud of Nigerian-trained doctors ever since. Let me remind you that the whole event is all about politics. Believe me, most of the doctors from those institutions can stand the test of time. You are simply clueless about the topic of note and your ignorance becomes manifest with every text you types. Pls save us from further your ignorant post. @Topic This is a wake up call on the govt to invest more in education. Many students want to study medicine, but the facilities we have cannot cope with their numbers. It's high time we erect more universities and equip them adequately to cope with the number. I'm ashamed that our teaching hospitals are overcowded. The institutions that their names did not appear on the list are not better than the ones whose names appeared on the list. Moreover, the performance of a doctor has nothing to do with "where he is trained", but "how he is trained". Please let's stop making ignorant comments. |

I'm not surprised that UNN is on the list. Their medical school is overpopulated. This might be due to greed or due to reasons best known to VC, Provost or Dean. The origin of the problem can be traced back to the administration of Prof. Ginigeme Mbanefo as the VC. Towards the end of his tenure in 2004, he admitted 440 students into Med/Surg. Half of them failed 1 or more first year courses and have to repeat the session the school rule dictates. They went ahead to incorporate more than 100 through direct entry(mostly consultants children) into an already swollen class, bringing the population to more than 320. Thereafter, roughly 170 medical students who had 2nd MB issues joined the class to bring the population to over 490. They tried unsuccessfully to control the population of the class, but failed. One of the reason being that the class can boast of an array of brilliant students who passes their exams easily. They introduced some stringent measure to control the population of the class by raising the standard. Still it fell short. They resorted to victimisation of student through their subjective clinical exams. The climax of their action resulted in more than 320 candidates being eligible to write 5th MB. Through their crooked means, they squeezed 120 doctors out. Most of their backlog of more than 200 were pushed out during the 5th MB re-sit exam in september 2010. This raised an eyebrow among the officials of MDCN. They intervened and slammed their hammer on the overpopulated class below by withdrawing their accreditation. The irony of the matter is that the set that this matter is traced to have graduated and are either doing their internship or serving. It's really unfortunate that graduates of Lion's republic are immersed in this mess. SMH |
