The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has lamented over the spate of attacks by Boko Haram, saying the terrorists have disappeared and merged into a bigger threat.

Shehu, who spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, said ISWAP is being funded by the remnants of the Libyan Army in collaboration with Iraq and Iran.

“What we are seeing today is that the Boko Haram that we knew has virtually disappeared and has merged to a bigger threat – ISWAP that is funded and financed by the Libyan Army and alliances that have been formed including Iraq,” he said.

“This is a challenge not only to Nigeria, Lake Chad Basin but to the Sub-Saharan region, and the whole of West Africa is tackling this together.”

When asked if Nigeria is in a safer place to live in before President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the Presidential spokesman replied in the positive.

Shehu said since his principal was inaugurated as President in 2015, he has taken adequate measures in tackling several threats, including the farmers/herders clashes.

Social media giants, Facebook have said it will no longer remove from its platforms claims that coronavirus was man-made.

The announcement comes shortly after US President Joe Biden announced he had directed the US intelligence community to restart an investigation into the origin of Covid-19.

Biden announced Wednesday, May 26, he had given the US officials 90 days to investigate the virus’ origins.

The announcement came after a US intelligence report found several researchers at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology fell ill in November 2019 and had to be hospitalized, a new detail that was not revealed before.

The Trump administration had touted claims that Coronavirus was man made i.e created in a Chinese lab, but China vigorously denied that assertion with the World Health Organization (WHO) also touting China’s stance that the virus originated from animals.



Following Biden’s announcement of more investigations into Covid-19 origins, Facebook has now announces a change of policy.


A Facebook spokesperson said to CNN on Wednesday night;

“In light of ongoing investigations into the origin of Covid-19 and in consultation with public health experts, we will no longer remove the claim that Covid-19 is man-made from our apps.”

“We’re continuing to work with health experts to keep pace with the evolving nature of the pandemic and regularly update our policies as new facts and trends emerge,” the spokesperson added.



Facebook as part of its fact check policies announced in February it would remove claims that the virus was man-made following “consultations with leading health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO).”

Facebook had previously deleted posts that spread vaccine misinformation and other Covid-19 claims that were not approved by the WHO.

Naira crashed yesterday to N495/$ at the parallel market, losing N14 to the dollar within within few days. It closed on Tuesday at N481/$.

The sharp depreciation came a day after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) devalued the naira at the official market to N410.25/$.

The fall in the currency rate has been linked to dollar scarcity and the hoarding of available greenback by forex speculators to maximize profit.

In an e-mailed guide to investors, Financial Derivatives Company Managing Director Limited Bismarck Rewane, said delayering (unification) of the multiple exchange rate system which had bedeviled the Nigerian economy had been a subject of controversy for a long period.

He said: “Now that it appears settled, we should expect a crawling peg method and an increase in forex supply to ensure equilibrium in the market. That notwithstanding, the CBN’s attempt to mop up excess liquidity could serve as a temporary antidote to consumer price inflation which still remains stubbornly high (18.12 per cent).”

Rewane had earlier attributed the naira’s continued decline to heightened forex supply shortage, demand pressure and rationing.

He said naira rates’ convergence would require adoption of a full floating exchange rate system determined by the forces of demand and supply.

Also, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said exchange rate rigidities have constrained the economy’s ability to absorb external shocks.

According to the IMF, restrictions on access to foreign exchange for certain categories of goods and multiple exchange rates create distortions in both private and public sectors decision making. They discourage long-term investment, encourage smuggling and provide avenues for corruption.

As a way forward, the IMF suggested removal of foreign exchange restrictions and full exchange rate unification, in line with the authorities’ Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), will help keep the parallel market premium low in a more sustained manner.

It therefore called for unified exchange rate for the naira to promote growth and attractive foreign capital.

According to the IMF, foreign exchange backlog and shortages are intensifying Balance of Payment (BoP) pressures insisting that exchange rate unification was imperative to reduce BoP risks.

It said that fiscal deficit would stay elevated in the medium term, while additional domestic revenue mobilisation is required to reduce fiscal risks.

Forex Trading Associate, AZA, global forex trading dealer, Oghenefejiro Eduviere, said exchange rate volatility will persist, with inflation concerns mitigated by the rise in crude oil prices this year with Brent Crude now selling at $66.1 per barrel.

He said that rising oil revenue and increased remittance inflows following the ‘Naira for Dollar’ incentive policy have helped boost foreign exchange reserves from $34.845 billion to $35.22 billion so far this month, according to the CBN.

“Amidst the swings, we expect the overall trend will be a weakening on the parallel market towards N490 on inflation concerns.

A 34-year-old man, identified as Okpegboro Avwerosuo, from Ughelli North in Delta State has allegedly killed his yet-to-be-identified friend and roommate in Sagbama area of Bayelsa State and sold his body parts to a Pastor.

According to TheNation Newspaper, a neighbor, who spoke in confidence, said Avwerosuo allegedly invited the deceased to his home in Sagbama in order to start off motorcycle riding business, assuring him that the business was flourishing in the town because of the presence of Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro College of Education in the area.

The source said that barely two weeks after the deceased arrived Sagbama, Avwerosuo allegedly smashed him with a pestle on the head in the middle of the night and the friend died in the process.

The neighbor also explained that after allegedly killing his friend, Avwerosuo dismembered his body, preserved the vital organs, and put the other parts in separate sacks which he disposed in the early hours of the next day.

The source said while the suspect was disposing of the sacks, another neighbor who saw him and suspected his movements confronted him later in the afternoon about the whereabouts of his roommate.

“The suspect claimed that the deceased has traveled back to Delta State for an urgent business. Not satisfied with his response, the neighbour forced his way into the room and saw bloodstains everywhere. The neighbour held him down and alerted the local vigilante which eventually called the police in to arrest the suspect.
Upon interrogation prior to his being handed over to the police, the suspect confessed that he had sold the vital organs of the deceased to a pastor in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for ritual purposes,” the source said.

“With a deep sense of loss but total submission to God Almighty, we regret to announce that IFEY ONWUEMENE has gone to be with the Lord.

“IFEY ONWUEME was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Her womb was removed, but she has been battling the ailment for many years now.

“In 2019, even after eight sessions of chemotherapy, the doctors told her she had reached stage 4. However, we are not sure if she was given the wrong diagnosis or being treated with the wrong chemo, because she still felt pains on her upper abdomen and her tummy bloated.

“Ify spent more than N10m, being helped with donations by her fellow actors and other Nigerians. A GoFundme account was opened for her, but it did not yield much. She had to go for draining every two weeks at a cost of N280,000, but only 3 litres of liquid can be removed at a time so that her heart is not affected.

“IFEY has finally gone to rest, today 25th May 2021. May her soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
Gloria added that burial arrangements would be released by the family of the deceased.

A club owner, Mr Emeke Williams Kingsley and fourteen other suspects, have been arrested by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos, for Internet fraud.

Kingsley is the owner of Glass House, a club in the Abule Egba area of the state.

He was arrested alongside Adesoye Hussain Kehinde, Seun Joseph Adefala, Adebayo Gbadebo, Adebogun Olumuyiwa Adebowale, Aruna Ikoghane Odunayo, Israel Oluwatoyin.

Others are Junaid Idris Oladimeji, John Nnachi Ugochukwu, Oluwadare Olaiyan Aboderin, Ridwan Temitope Dada, Amosu Johnson Toby, Jimoh Kazeem Tunde, Oyemade Michael and Akeem Dada.

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren in a statement said they were all arrested at the club.

“The operation followed credible intelligence gathered about their alleged involvement in computer-related fraud.

“Items recovered from them include cars, mobile phones and laptop computer.

“The suspects will soon be charged to court, the statement concluded,” Mr Uwujaren stated.

President Joe Biden has signed a hate crimes law Thursday aimed at protecting Asian Americans who have suffered a surge in attacks during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Racism, Biden told Asian American politicians and senior members of Congress in a packed room at the White House, is “an ugly poison that has long plagued our nation.”

Reeling off a list of violent incidents, which took place against a backdrop of anti-Chinese sentiment linked to the pandemic, Biden said the Asian American community had been made a “scapegoat.”

“Too many Asian Americans have been waking up this past year genuinely fearing for their safety, just opening their door and walking down the street,” he noted.

“Stop AAPI Hate, an activist group, says there were 6,603 hate incidents — mostly verbal insults — in the year from March 2020, but many more were likely not reported to police”.

Going unmentioned by Biden was that his predecessor Donald Trump would frequently refer to the coronavirus as “the China virus” and “kung flu” — racist-tinged phrases that quickly became part of the right-wing lexicon.

The New York attorney general’s office said Tuesday that it is pursuing a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization, in addition to the ongoing civil probe.

“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil in nature. We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA. We have no additional comment at this time,” Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for the office, said in a statement.

Attorney General Letitia James has been at the forefront of legal action against former President Donald Trump’s family business.

The Trump Organization investigation stemmed from allegations made by Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen, who alleged when he testified to Congress in 2019 that Trump had deliberately provided incorrect valuations of assets in official documents, NBC News has previously reported, citing a source familiar with the investigation.

James’ yearslong probe into Trump’s charitable foundation led to its dissolution in 2018. More recently, her investigation into whether Trump’s business had inflated the value of its assets for the purposes of tax breaks and loans came to a head in October when Eric Trump, the president’s son and an executive at his business, sat for a pre-election deposition.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has declared Gimba Yau Kumo, son-in-law to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), wanted for alleged $65 million fraud.

Kumo, a former Managing Director, Federal Mortgage Bank, got married to Buhari’s daughter in October 2016 in Daura, Katsina State.

The commission in a notice published on its website said Kumo was wanted alongside Tarry Rufus and Bola Ogunsola over alleged misappropriation and dispersion of national housing fund.

The notice was signed by the ICPC spokesperson, Mrs Azuka Ogugua.

It read, “The persons whose pictures appear above, Mr Tarry Rufus, Mr Gimba Yau Kumo and Mr Bola Ogunsola, are hereby declared wanted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission in connection with issues bordering on misappropriation of National Housing Funds and diversion of the sum of $65m.

“Anyone who has useful information on their whereabouts should report to ICPC Headquarters, Abuja, any of the ICPC State Offices or the nearest police station.”

Kumo’s tenure at FMBN was characterised by allegations of corruption.

He and three others allegedly paid themselves outrageous severance packages at the end of their tenure in October 2014.

In April, the senate committee on public accounts summoned Kumo to explain the alleged irregular award of N3 billion contract when he was still at the bank.

Kidnappers of a Deeper Life Pastor, Otamayomi Ogedengbe, have demanded a ransom payment of N30m.

The kidnappers were said to have contacted the family on Wednesday night.

A family member said the kidnappers refused to yield below N30m.

Pastor Ogedengbe was abducted on Monday evening after conducting Bible study at Irese area of Akure.
His wife, Yinka, said the kidnappers shot into the air before taking him away.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has declared President Muhammadu Buhari’s son-in-law, Gimba Yau Kumo, and two others wanted.

Mr. Kumo, a former Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, tied the knot with Buhari’s second daughter, Fatima, in 2016.

They are wanted over the diversion and misappropriation of $65 million National Housing fund.

He was declared wanted by the ICPC on Thursday alongside Mr. Tarry Rufus and Mr. Bola Ogunsola over misappropriation and diversion of $65 million National Housing fund.

According to a statement signed by the ICPC spokesperson, Azuka C. Ogugua, the Commission urged the public to provide information about the whereabouts of Mr. Kumo and his cohort.

Akwa Ibom State Police Command has concluded plans to parade Uduak Frank Akpan, the suspected killer of a job seeker in the state, Iniubong Umoren, on Friday.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Andrew Amiengheme, has also debunked reports circulating that the suspect committed suicide while in custody.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, disclosed that the reason behind the move was to dismiss rumour of the death of the suspected killer in police custody.

He further lamented that the people are frustrating police’s efforts, and that it is not possible for the police to allow a suspect to commit suicide in detention.

He said, “How can we allow him to commit suicide? How can he hang himself by tying his trousers to the metal frame of his cell door? How?”

Gistongist has earlier reported that the victim had gone missing while attending a job interview in Akwa Ibom last Thursday after she tweeted via her handle, @HinyHumoren, that she needed a job and some persons had suggested prospective employers to her.

However, the news of her death broke out on social media as one of her friends disclosed on Twitter in the early hours of Sunday that Humoren was raped and killed by one Uduak Frank Akpan.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Andrew Amiengheme, has debunked reports circulating that the suspect committed suicide while in custody.

The police commissioner described the rumour as the figment of the writer’s imagination, noting that the police would not be distracted with speculations.

The funeral arrangement for Murdered Akwa Ibom job-seeker, Iniubong Ephraim Umoren has been announced.

According to the obituary, a funeral ceremony for Ini will take place on Friday, May 14th at her compound in Nung Ita Ikot Obio Enin Atai in Akwa Ibom.

The 26-year-old, who graduated from the Department of Philosophy, University of Uyo, with a CGPA of 4.12, was raped and brutally killed after a man lured her on social media with a fake job interview.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has advised Muslim faithful to be on the watch out for the crescent (moon) today.

The Sultan gave the order in a statement issued by the NSCIA Deputy Secretary-General, Prof. Salisu Shehu.

“If the crescent is actually sighted by informed persons on Tuesday night and His Eminence is so advised by the experts, he would address the press to declare Wednesday, May 12, as the first day of Shawwal (Eid day).

“If, however, the crescent is not sighted on Tuesday night, Thursday, May 13, automatically becomes the first of Shawwal, 1442 AH (Eid day),” he said.

The sighting of the moon of Shawwal marks the end of the Ramadan fasting period and ushers in the Eid-ul-fitri celebrations.

Tears , whimpering sobs and free flow of emotions on Tuesday afternoon as the remains of Pastor Dare Adeboye was laid to rest.

The cleric was buried after a Farewell Service at the Youth Centre, Redemption Camp, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. In attendance at the farewell service were his wife, Temiloluwa; his three daughters; his brother, Leke Adeboye, other siblings; the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide aka Winners’ Chapel, David Oyedepo; his wife, Faith; as well as his son, Pastor David Oyedepo Jr.

Dare was later buried in the presence of friends, family and church members.

Pastor Dare, the third child of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, died last Wednesday in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, where he was based with his family. The 42-year-old was the Assistant Pastor in charge of Region (Youth) 35 before his death. He was father to three daughters.

His death shocked the whole world as well-meaning persons including presidents, governors, and personalities condoled the 79-year-old general overseer and his wife over the death of their son.

Temiloluwa had last night during a night of tribute for her late husband said he was not afraid of death, adding that she was sure the late cleric was in heaven.
