Health / WHO To Consider E-certificates For COVID-19 Vaccination by gistongist: 10:30am On Dec 04, 2020
The World Health Organisation said it was considering introducing electronic vaccination certificates, as hopes for an end to the pandemic were boosted after Britain became the first country to approve use of a Covid-19 vaccine.

“We are looking very closely into the use of technology in this Covid-19 response and one of them is how can we work with members states towards something called an e-vaccination certificate,” WHO Europe expert Siddhartha Datta told an online press briefing Thursday.

Introducing such a certificate, which would make it possible to identify and monitor people who have been vaccinated, has not been finalised and would have to be drawn up in accordance with national laws, Datta said.

It would not be an immunity passport, which is supposed to assure that its carrier is protected against the disease because they have been infected and recovered.

“We do not recommend immunity passports,” said Catherine Smallwood, the WHO’s senior emergency officer for Europe.

Tech-savvy Estonia earlier this year began testing an app that could serve as a kind of digital “immunity passport”, allowing users with antibodies to show employers and others their reduced risk of spreading the coronavirus.

Foreign Affairs / Trump Urges Georgia’s Governor To Halt Senate Elections by gistongist: 12:57pm On Dec 02, 2020
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged Georgia’s governor to halt the state’s upcoming senate race and reiterated his unproven claims that the November presidential election saw widespread voter fraud.

“Do something @BrianKempGA. You allowed your state to be scammed,” Trump tweeted at Georgia’s governor Brian Kemp.

“We must check signatures and count signed envelopes against ballots.

“Then call off election. It won’t be needed. We will all WIN!,” he added.

Trump lost the historically conservative state of Georgia to President-elect Joe Biden, a Democrat, during last month’s election.

He has refused to concede the race, however, and has instead attacked members of Georgia’s Republican Party and made unsubstantiated claims that the vote was rigged.

The state of Georgia, which usually votes Republican, will have two simultaneous runoff elections for the Senate in January.

The outcome of these races will determine which political party, the Democrats or the Republicans, will control the U.S. Senate after Biden is inaugurated.

Trump’s tweet appeared to suggest that, if not for the voter fraud he alleges, Georgia’s Republican candidates for Senate would have won their elections by a wide enough margin that the January runoff would be unnecessary.

Health / United States Set To Distribute Covid 19 Vaccines by gistongist: 11:54am On Nov 25, 2020
The United States plans to distribute 6.4 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid 19 vaccine in the first week after it is cleared for emergency use, which is likely next month, officials said Tuesday.

A committee of the Food and Drug Administration meets on December 10 to decide whether to green-light the medicine, with the US confronted by soaring numbers of deaths and new cases.

Latest figures on Tuesday showed that the country had recorded a total of 259,600 Covid deaths and 12.5 million cases — with over 2,000 deaths and 167,000 new cases in just the last 24 hours.

General Gustave Perna, chief operations officer for the government’s Operation Warp Speed, told reporters some 40 million doses of vaccine would be available by the end of December.

That figure includes another vaccine developed by Moderna and the National Institutes for Health, which announced some preliminary efficacy results last week and is also close to applying for emergency approval.

Foreign Affairs / Biden Unveils Cabinet, Says America Is Back by gistongist: 10:47am On Nov 25, 2020
The US President-elect Joe Biden has unveiled his first cabinet picks as he prepares to take office.

If confirmed, Avril Haines would be the first female director of national intelligence and Alejandro Mayorkas the first Latino homeland security boss.

The team will help enact an agenda reflecting that “America is back, ready to lead the world”, Biden said.

The White House meanwhile cleared Mr Biden to receive a top secret intelligence brief.

Biden will be given access to the Presidential Daily Brief, the document that updates the president on details of the latest international threats and developments. The move came a day after President Donald Trump agreed the transition should start.

However, he still refuses to concede defeat. He said the General Services Administration (GSA), which oversees the handover, must “do what needs to be done”, but continues to repeat unsubstantiated claims that the November 3 election was “rigged”.

Biden can now access millions of dollars in funds, national security briefings and key government officials as he prepares to take over the presidency on 20 January.

Biden is projected to beat President Trump by 306 votes to 232 in the US Electoral College when it meets to formally confirm the winner on 14 December. This is far above the 270 votes he needs.

Politics / G-20 Approve Extension Of Payment Of Debt By Poorest Countries by gistongist: 11:15am On Nov 23, 2020
Leaders of the world’s 20 biggest economies on Sunday endorsed a plan to extend a freeze in official debt service payments by the poorest countries to mid-2021 and backed a common approach for dealing with their debt problems.

In a joint statement, Group of 20 leaders also strongly encouraged private creditors to take part in the initiative on comparable terms and said they were keeping an eye on the special challenges facing African and small island states.

The G20 debt relief initiative – launched shortly after the start of the pandemic in the spring – has helped 46 of 73 eligible countries defer $5.7 billion in 2020 debt service payments, freeing up funds for countries to fight the pandemic and shore up their economies.

But lack of private-sector participation and countries’ concerns about marring future access to capital markets have limited the success of the debt freeze, which was initially projected to generate some $12 billion in extra liquidity.

Some big creditor countries, including China, also failed to include all state-owned institutions, such as the China Development Bank, in responding to requests for debt relief.

The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated concerns about high debt levels affecting not just low-income countries, but some middle-income states as well.

Politics / 753 Nigerians In Ghana Call For Government To Evacuate by gistongist: 2:21pm On Nov 13, 2020
At least, 753 Nigerians living in Ghana, mostly traders, have called on the federal government to evacuate them back home.

The Nigerian Union of Traders Association in Ghana (NUTAG) in a letter to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, they said the diplomatic niceties between Nigeria and Ghana have not yielded results.

The “Save our Soul” letter alleged consistent harassment, intimidation, torture and threat to life by Ghanaians and their authorities.

The letter was presented by a delegation led by the President, National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), Dr Ken Ukoaha.

He was accompanied by NUTAG President, Chukwuemeka Nnaji, and members.

They also visited the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Richard Adebayo, in Abuja.

Ukaoha said: “As traders, this is our mother ministry, and that is why we have come to meet with the minister and convey our final decision to be safely evacuated from Ghana.

“Nigerian traders in Ghana are being tortured, intimidated, harassed, apart from being subjected to all manners of frustrations by the government and people of Ghana since 2007.

“Imagine our businesses being under lock and key for several months by Ghanaian authorities. Some traders who borrowed money from banks to transact businesses cannot pay back and some goods are getting expired.

“Having consciously reviewed our situation and counted the costs, we have solemnly resolved to leave Ghana in peace before it is too late.

“This is particularly to avoid our members being compelled by nature into criminal activities or shamefully turning to beggars on the streets of Ghana as a survival strategy that will demean Nigeria’s integrity among the comity of nations.
