Nigeria’s public debt raises to N39.556trn


GoldenNewsNg gathered that the Nigeria’s total debt, comprising federal, states and the Federal Capital Territory rose to N39.556 trillion as at December 31, 2021.

Director-general of the Debt Management Office (DMO), Ms Patience Oniha, made the disclosure on Thursday at a media briefing in Abuja.

Oniha said the trend was coming from the consecutive many years of borrowing.

The new figure results in the nation’s debt to gross domestic product (GDP) rising to 22.47 per cent.




Nigeria’s debt service to revenue is 33.4 per cent. She said the debt service to revenue was high because Nigeria was borrowing to augment for the shortfall in revenues.

In justification for the rising debt stock, Oniha said: “debt is growing because we have huge infrastructure deficit and we have low revenue base.”

The Nigerian naira has dropped to N585 against the dollar at the parallel section of the foreign exchange market.
The figure represents N4 or 0.7 percent depreciation compared to the N581 it traded last week.

Bureaux De Change operators (BDCs), popularly known as ‘aboki or Black Market s’, who spoke to our corresponded in Lagos and Benin on Thursday morning, said the naira exchanges for N585 to the dollar while they purchase at N578/$1, leaving a gain of N7.

A parallel market (street market) is characterised by noncompliant behaviour with an institutional set of rules.

Since the suspension of trading information by abokiFX — citizens have resorted to street traders for current parallel market rates of the local currency.

However, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has consistently maintained that the parallel market represents less than one percent of foreign exchange (FX) transactions and should never be used to determine the naira/dollar exchange rate.

On the apex bank’s website, the naira closed at N416.42 to a dollar on the official market.

This implies that the official market rate has dropped N3 since January.

The Nigerian economy is expected to take a hit from the Russia-Ukraine crisis as an import-driven nation and a possible decline in diaspora remittances from Europe, especially the war zone. Since the crisis started on February 24, Nigeria’s foreign reserves have dropped by $138 million to $39.7 billion.

US prosecutors presented documents before the United States District Court of California on Wed 16th March 2022 with fresh evidence indicting HushPuppi of committing fraud and money laundering in U.S Federal correctional facility. The court documents stated that Hushpuppi, while in U.S Federal correctional facility, participated in the purchase and laundering of Economic Impact Payment debit cards fraudulently obtained from stolen data of U.S citizens and residents.

Economic Impact Payments are financial support offered by the US government to U.S residents according to the CARES Act. One of the ways eligible US residents receive their Economic Impact Payments is by debit cards. From the documents presented in court, it was found that hackers use data of U.S residents to file and obtain Economic Impact Payments debit cards. They sell off these EIP cards in underground marketplaces to other cyber criminals.

In the court document, US prosecutors mentioned that inmates are allowed access to phone calls, video calls, the internet, and computers with limited usage but they are not monitored because inmates have the right to their privacy. Hushpuppi also received this access like other inmates.

However, between 28th Jan and 4th Mar 2022, security officers at the US Federal correctional facility observed more usage of the internet by Hushpuppi. Knowing that Hushpuppi was arrested for internet-related crimes, they obtained a warrant to record Hushpuppi’s activities. A dedicated system was set up for him and his activities were recorded for 7 days.

It was found that Hushpuppi was actively buying EIP debit cards from an underground cybercriminal marketplace called StimulusCard (“https://stimuluscard.com/”). While being recorded, Hushpuppi bought a total of 58 EIP debit cards with a total value of $429,800 on the site and laundered the money through one AJ.

Senate Confirms New Commissioner In National Assembly Commission

GoldenNewsNg gathered that the Senate on Wednesday confirmed Hon. Amaechi Nwoha as Commissioner representing South East in the National Assembly Service Commission.

According to report by Naija News the lawmaker was confirmed for the position after the consideration of a report by the Committee on Establishment and Public Service.

Special Assistant to the Senate President, Ezrel Tabiowo, who announced the development in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday, said the report was presented to the assembly by Senator Smart Adeyemi (Kogi West) on behalf of the Committee Chairman, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano Central).

He said: “Adeyemi in his presentation said the nominee satisfied the requirement of section 4 of the National Assembly Service Commission Act 2014 as amended.

“According to the lawmaker, Nwoha’s antecedents as a legislator in the Imo State House of Assembly makes him suitable and competent for appointment in the NASC.

“He stated that there was no petition received by the Committee against his nomination as Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the Senate has passed two bills for concurrence.

“The bills are Climate Change Bill, 2021, and Adeyemi Federal Ini University of Education, Ondo (Establishment) Bill, 2021.

“Both bills for concurrence were sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North),” the statement added.

Sunday Igboho Hospitalized, In Critical Condition Lawyer Revealed.
Embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been reportedly rushed to the hospital.




GoldenNewsNg gathered that It was confirmed to newsmen on Wednesday, October 13 by one of the agitator’s legal counsel, Yomi Aliyu, that that the Igboho is critically ill and has been rushed to the hospital.

GoldenNewsNg reports that Aliyu while interacting with BBC Yoruba earlier, alleged that the rights activist developed the illness in Benin Republic prison custody.

According to him, the agitator has also been critically ill and rushed to the hospital for treatment. The lawyer raised an alarm that Igboho is in dire need of medical treatment.

He said: “Igboho was not diagnosed with this sickness before he was arrested in Cotonou. It was so critical that they had to rush him to the hospital.

“I can’t tell if he has been returned to the prison from the hospital but what I know is, he’s battling ill health and it seems his kidney and lungs are already being affected.

“Even though I cannot tell which part of his body the sickness has really affected, I know it has to do with his internal organs,” Aliyu noted.

Confirming the report, a source under the umbrella of the Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, told newsmen that “Yes, he is ill and his kidney appears affected. We are not very sure yet. Another test result is expected for confirmation. We are working on that and I can assure you that he is in safe hands.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for Ilana Oodua, Maxwell Adeleye, said, “Expect our reaction soon. But the government should be warned that nothing must happen to Igboho.”

GoldenNewsNg also gathered that Sunday Igboho is currently in a detention facility in the Benin Republic.

This follows the invasion of his residence in Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State by men from the Department of State Services, DSS.

The activist was subsequently arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on July 16, 2021, with his wife, while travelling to Germany and has since then been in detention.

4.          The 2022 Budget will be the last full year budget to be implemented by this administration. President Buhari is set to present the 2022 Budget to the joint National Assembly.

GoldenNewsNg reports that all is set for President Muhammadu Buhari to present the 2022 budget to a joint session of the National Assembly today (Thursday).

President Buhari had in a letter to both the Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday informed the lawmakers of his visit to the legislative complex to present the Appropriation Bill.

The lawmakers have spent most part of the week preparing for the event.

Part of the preparations was the finalisation of the 2022-2024 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP).

President  Buhari had sought the approval of the lawmakers to make some changes in the proposed Framework and one of the changes was the increase of the Federal Government’s total expenditure for 2022 from N13.98 trillion to N16.45 trillion.

As it stands, the estimated budget expenditure is expected to be about N16.39 trillion – according to the revised MTEF approved by the Senate on Wednesday.

The president is expected to arrive at the National Assembly and lay the budget before the lawmakers at noon. The event is expected to take about an hour.

Mr Buhari is also expected to address, in his speech, the 2020 budget performance, insecurity across the country, recent economic crisis with regards to crude oil price and the COVID-19 pandemic, among others.

Security has been beefed up at the National Assembly complex in readiness for the arrival of the president and his entourage.

Both chambers will carry on with their plenary sessions from 10:00 a.m. until about 11:30 a.m. and thereafter converge at the lower chamber to await the president’s arrival.

Several measures have also been put in place with regards to COVID-19 safety protocols.

GoldenNewsNg reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday arrested former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, for alleged fraud and failing to explain how he came to own 22 properties in Nigeria, the United States, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

According to SaharaReporters, EFCC sources said Ekweremadu was interrogated for several hours in Abuja and allowed to go home later. He is expected to return to the commission for further questioning at a later date.

“Ekweremadu returned to the EFCC to offer explanations on how he acquired many choice properties in Nigeria, United States of America and United Arab Emirates.
“He was with us two weeks ago and also on Monday,” a source said.
This comes three years after Ekweremadu fell ill during interrogation by operatives of the anti-graft commission.

The politician in 2018 took ill after some hours of questioning at the EFCC office in Abuja and was released to seek medical attention.


The Nigerian government had in March 2018 sought an interim order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, to temporarily seize 22 prime properties/assets of Ekweremadu located in London, Dubai, Florida, and Abuja, that were not declared before the CCB.

The motion ex-parte filed by Festus Keyamo (SAN) on behalf of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property was brought before the court pursuant to Section 330 of The Administration Of Criminal Justice Act, 2015; Section 8 Of The Recovery Of Public Property (Special Provisions) Act and Section 44 (2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution.

In an affidavit deposed to in support of the motion ex parte by Yohanna Shankuk, a litigation clerk in Festus Keyamo Chambers, he stated that from 1999 till date, Ekweremadu had been a public officer and had not earned anything outside his salaries and allowances as a public officer

PDP has rejected Atiku for 2023 Presidency considering Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed says Adeyanju.

GoldenNewsNg reports that Deji Adeyanju, an Abuja-based activist, on Wednesday hinted on candidates the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders are considering to field as presidential candidate in 2023.

Adeyanju, convener of Concerned Nigerians claimed that PDP stakeholders are considering either Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State or Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.





In a series of tweets, the former PDP member claimed that the party’s stakeholders are tired of fielding Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate.



The activist claimed that PDP stakeholders are angry with Atiku for allegedly abandoning the party in the 2015 elections.





According to Adeyanju: “PDP stakeholders want to present Tambuwal or Bala Mohammed both serving Governors as presidential candidates and someone from South as VP in 2023.



“They say everybody is tired of the Dubai man with dollars. Why won’t you guys present him now? I want to see you guys in opposition for 16yrs.

“Many of them are so pained that the man abandoned their party after the election and relocated to Dubai for two years but is now back to start campaigning for another ticket.



“The only way PDP can get real sense is if they spend 16yrs in opposition. APC should present an acceptable candidate in 2023.”

President Buhari Makes New Appointment

GoldenNewsNg gathered that President Buhari on Friday approved the appointment of five new Permanent Secretaries in the Federal Civil Service.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, disclosed that they were selected following the selection process conducted recently.

The Director, Press and Public Relations, in her office, Mallam AbdulGaniyu Aminu, said in a statement that the appointed federal permanent secretaries and their states of origin are Adebiyi Olusesan Olufunso, Ekiti; Onwudiwe Maryann Ngozi, Enugu; Yusuf Ibrahim Idris, Katsina; Ogunbiyi Marcus Olaniyi, Lagos; and Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Nasarawa.





Aminu further stated that the date of the swearing-in and deployment of the appointees would be announced soon.

The five new permanent secretaries were part of the 11 directors on Salary Grade Level 17 in the Federal Civil Service, who sat for the Information Communication Technology (ICT) proficiency test on June 3 as part of the process of appointing them as permanent secretaries.





The 11 directors were part of the 21 directors among the previous 46 senior officers who took series of tests and procedures including written and oral examinations in Abuja.





The federal government had in May announced the shortlisting of 47 directors for the examination among the 51 candidates who earlier faced a panel to fill the vacant positions in the five states.

Governor Wike may be in fresh trouble as the Police recover N114 million used to bribe INEC Officers during election.

GoldenNewsNg reports that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state may be in trouble as the Nigerian police force has announced the recovery of over N114 million out of N360 million he allegedly used to bribe electoral officers in the 2016 bye-elections.

According to a report by Politics Nigeria monitored by GoldenNewsNg , Governor Wike reportedly doled out the huge sum to 23 staff members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a bribe to sway the election in his favor.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Joseph Egbonike, disclosed this on Tuesday while appearing before the House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on assessment and status of all recovered loot, movable and immovable assets from 2002 to 2020.

“There was a governorship rerun in 2016 between Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the main opposition at that time, which was the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the sum of N360 million money was offered as bribe to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials during the 2016 rerun governorship election in Rivers State.”

“The said matter is still in court and I wouldn’t want to speak much on it, but the said amount you are referring to was recovered from 23 officials of INEC during the 2016 rerun elections of the National and State Assembly which was rigged in favour of PDP.”

“Although, the persons involved have been prosecuted and convicted, the matter has been appealed and not dispensed.”

Federal Government has appointed Mr Usman Baba as the nation’s substantive Inspector-General of Police.

GoldenNewsNg gathered that the Police Council has also confirmed Mr Usman Baba as the nation’s substantive Inspector-General of Police.
