If one gets the new opportunity card being proposed this year, how long will it take to get German PR and citizenship?
The opportunity card only grants you 12 months to look for a job. If you don't get, you have to leave the country.

When you do get a job, you will have to apply for EU Blue card. There's a salary threshold for this.

With the EU Blue card, you will be issued a permanent settlement permit upon application subject to the following requirements:
You must have been employed subject to compulsory insurance for at least 27 months and
you must have basic knowledge of German.
If you have sufficient command of the German language, the period will be shortened to 21 months of employment.

To get citizenship, you have to have 5 years of legal residence permit. It can be shortened to 3 years as a PR holder if you have C1 German

You are well informed.

He can get a US green card through the Einstein route or something like that. If he has studied STEM and has few publications.

Otherwise he would be stucked with green card problem in the US.

For Germany, he will get the permanent residence after his PhD and can work towards citizenship.

Lastly Phd trajectory is a bit relaxed in Germany compared to US. No heavy coursework and TA or RA problems, you only focus on some research and do few coursework that you can spread throughout the Phd trajectory.

However OP should be willing to learn learn German to have a smooth transition to industry after the phd.

There are countless English speaking postgraduate courses in Germany these days. The country is just very careful to maintain it's language heritage that they made too easy to take up opportunities once the language is acquired.

Not to talk of opportunities in Switzerland with your German. Earn comparable or even more than in the US.

Would you pick a PhD in Germany or a PhD in the US provided that both are equally funded ?

1. PHD in Germany is for 3 years, while it's 4 or 5 in the USA(Averagely 5 years).

2. PHD in Germany is regarded as employment mostly, and you're paid better than the stipend you get after Funding in the US.(Not scholarships like DAAD though).

3. After your PHD in US, Your best bet for Green card is EB1 visa and it's by luck. The new German law enacted this year can give you German citizenship a year after your PHD if you learn German to C1 level. With the German passport, you can apply for EBI visa.

4. With a PHD admission, you can get appointment in days for Germany, and visa approval max of 4 weeks.

I stated all those for Germany because I know people have limited knowledge and you'll mostly get for US. If I was you though, I'll go for Germany, earn more in three years , get my citizenship with one of the strongest passport on planet earth.

Congratulations if you have both though

You are the kind of people I like to have in my circle or contact.

Currently, I'm on course to what you mentioned here but I want to know if age is not a barrier in japa version 2.0, for example what is the possibility like for a 35 y/o single guy looking to use study route?
It depends on the country and the opportunities it provides. Some countries allow you to switch to work visa when you land via study route. That should be promising for a 35yr old because apart from getting an MBA, economic gains should be your aim and target.

English language IT roles there are really competitive at this point. Vacancies with English regularly have over a 100 applications on LinkedIn unlike the German ones. So even in IT, your life will be 10 times easier if you can speak German.

I'm hoping to start applying by July when I have B2. No need to waste my time on it now.
Not every role is on LinkedIn. There are dozens of sites in Germany, and most startups with English jobs don't even post on these platforms. You can check Xing for example, majority of roles there are not on linkedin. LinkedIn is just a strata of the bigger picture. Especially now that roles are not bountiful like before

When was your interview? Mine was 6th of Feb and haven't gotten AM.. Its over 4 weeks now and I'm worried. Hannania please say something on this...
You all should stay calm. Late last year, it use to take around 12 weeks. It improved to 4 to 7 weeks, and even 3 weeks has been seen. Several factors cause the delay.

1. The city that process your approval(where your school is located ). Every city has a different pace.

2. You resumption date also counts. If your resumption is far off, they might hold on a bit.

So no issues, it will come eventually 😊

Has anyone been able to apply for 2024 winter session?

Most institutions i have checked are yet to start application.
University of Siegen, Hamburg and Darmstadt are open. FAU will close some winter applications this month. Use daad.de to search. Most opened this month, and a lot will open next month too

I would have loved to use Austria's study route as a stepping because of cost, but their new rules regarding legalization made me abort mission.
$400 shouldn't make you abort. What ever country you chose to go besides Austria or Germany, and Switzerland, you'll spend on tuition. So why abort because of $400?

There's one thing though; your employer has to prove that no other German, EU citizen, or refugee in Germany was qualified, available, and interested in filling that slot.

Edit: the law has being changed, employer doesn't need to prove this again.

Good evening my Bosses,

Please I booked appointment since 2022 with the consulate and just got an AD,
But I'm yet to get an admission letter
I'm still writing and I'm hopeful on the ones applied so far.

Please how best can I manage my interview appointment especially given the waiting period.
Firstly, congratulations on your AD. When did you book? Please I'll like to know.

Go for your interview. They'll most likely give you time to provide the admission letter. People with similar case as you have been given a month to provide it previously

do not quote me unneccesary, its funny how you quickly quote justwise i believe you are new on nairaland persons like me hv been here since inception of nairaland, nothing has been said about SL that is alarming or new to Consular, Everything about SL or how people go about it is know by the germans. Here in Deutschland is known how people go about it. Germans are one of the most noisy people in the world they pay attend to every details and know every details. Thats why they explain the implication of doing SL for someone, to integrate is difficult so if you want to jeopardize things they dont care.
Take that elsewhere. Even if you've been here for 100 years, don't ask for sale of Sponsorship letter on this thread. Thank you.

[Quote author=Hannania post=128786676] Why are you interested in private schools? Block account is €11,208, and you must pay €11,000 for one year of tuition before your interview date. That's a total of €23k for just one year when there's 100s of public schools with semester fee of just €300.

That's over 40m Naira grin

If you're fully endowed and have the money to spray, sure, but honestly, it's not worth it. That's why embassy mandates you pay one year tuition.

How can I japa in v2.0?
Japa version 2.0 is based on individuals. The slang basically means moving from less economical nation to the other. E.g Nigeria > Austria > Australia. Some persons might find the ebode they need in Austria. That's why I said it's relative. Try do v1.0 first grin

Bro, it's difficult to get that kind of info because most of them are gated and aren't really readily available online. Once some folks get some of those routes, they become "travel agents" and you'll have to pay through your nose for them to help you. God knows I need that kind of info right now. It's just been tough and frustrating knowing what to do with the rising cost of japa.
Valuable things take sweat and hardwork to gain.

Let me give you an example of how you can dig this information personally. Let's say Germany for example:

1. Go to the immigration website for the country, look at different immigration routes for third world nationals, and see if there's an exception for Nigeria (We don cast). If there's none, read the requirements and jot down the ones you think you're eligible for.

2. Go to the consulate website here in Nigeria, then look for the visa checklist for that immigration route you found. If there's anyone you miss, then find a way to fill in the gap.

3. Ask and research what the timeline for that visa is, cost implications and alternative routes to reduce waiting time.

With the 3 steps above for all 27 countries in Europe(as a sample) I assure you you'll be confused on the options because of the overwhelming possibilities.

Other Africans have been utilizing the Ausbildung system in Germany for example. Straight out of highschool to study nursing while getting paid. They graduate, work for a year or two, then move to Canada or Australia.

Ps: they start studying the language in the finals. You can see what information can do

Hello guys
Trust you are doing great
I really appreciate all the information gotten from this forum.
I actually booked an appointment in the middle of September 2022. Please can someone tell me when expect appointment? I am curious because I don't have an admission yet.
This is dangerous. You would have applied for summer admission then enrol and skip this summer semester so that your admission is valid. With the current pace(currently July), expect your date in may(19 months 2-3 weeks).

Unless you apply to a school this month and the admission will be available next month, get ready to pay for private school tuition which cost an average of €4000 per semester. Embassy expects you to pay for one year tuition which amounts to €8000 or you'll get a rejection. That's the major rejection case for German student visa.

So if you can't get admission before June(Your AD date), that visa is gone

She has checked everything. No AD
I really hope she will get it this week. I hope they didn’t skip her cause that would be sad.
Let's hope. I've never seen a case of skipped days. If she doesn't get this week, ask her to attempt booking again with her passport. If it's successful, it means she didn't book(maybe she thought she did). To verify this, please search "Lagos consulate" on the email inbox, and confirm the booking date. From the results, you can also see if she canceled.

If you see only the booking, screenshot it, then attach it and send an email to the embassy.
