The aftermath of flooding at Kamuchiri village in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, on April 29, 2024

At least 40 bodies were collected from various places after heavy flash floods wiped out several homes in Kamuchiri Village Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County following heavy rains.

Naivasha police commander Stephen Kirui confirmed they had collected at least 40 bodies from debris on Monday.

“We have 40 bodies so far collected and many more are covered by the mud. Many cars too are covered,” he said from the scene.

Officials at the mortuary said they had received 42 bodies.

Rescue teams said five vehicles were trapped in the mud but bodies had been retrieved.

“We expect the numbers to go up as the search and rescue goes on,” said an official on the ground. Many other people are missing after the incident on Sunday night.

More than 100 people were rushed to hospital following the tragedy.

Domestic animals were also killed in the incident, officials said.

Rescue missions were being hampered by the sloppiness of the area where the water raged through.

The floodwaters originated from a nearby river that broke its banks on Sunday night, according to the Kenya Red Cross.

“Several people have been taken to a health facility in Mai Mahiu due to flash floods affecting Kamuchiri Village.”

“The floodwaters are reported to have originated from a nearby river that broke its banks,” KRC said.

The incident cut the major road from Nairobi to Mai Mahiu after heaps of rocks, mud, and logs were dumped there.

Many road users were stranded for hours as rescuers responded there.
Police urged motorists to avoid the route.

Heavy rains are being experienced in many parts of the country amid calls for caution.

Teams from the Kenya Police, County Disaster team, Kenya Red Cross, and community members are at the scene, officials said.

The government Sunday postponed the scheduled school reopening to Monday, May 6, 2024, due to heavy rains.

TravelJUST-IN: 19 Passengers Die In Okene Bypass Fatal Accident by Hart11(op): 5:52pm On Apr 28, 2024
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said 19 persons were killed in a fatal road crash on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Okene bypass, on the Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State.

FRSC spokesperson, ACM Jonas Agwu, said the agency’s emergency rescue teams deployed to rescue the victims could not achieve the desired results after three hours of rescue attempts as the efforts they put into the rescue operations were unduly hindered by the fire inferno that engulfed the affected two vehicles.

The crash investigation report revealed that the crash involved two vehicles comprising a Dangote Truck bearing the registration details: NSH680YJ, and a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number KMC455ZE.

The Toyota Hiace Bus loaded from Kano State was on its lane on the highway when the Dangote Truck driver, who drove from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, wrongfully overtook a vehicle and collided head-on with the bus. The impact of the collision resulted in a fire inferno that burnt the victims to death.

According to the report, the crash, which was caused by route violation – ‘One Way’ and wrongful overtaking – involved 22 people all male.

“Unfortunately, 19 people out of the 22 victims were killed and one injured. The remaining two victims who were rescued by FRSC operatives without injuries survived the crash because they complied with traffic regulations on the compulsory use of seatbelts.

“The corpses of the dead victims whose lives were claimed by the crash have been deposited at Okene General Hospital,” the FRSC spokesman stated.

Recall that the corps marshal of the FRSC had during his press conference earlier Thursday last week drawn the attention of road users to issues of imbibing moral and ethical rebirth, which have become a major issue in the country.

He warned against traffic violations, citing instances where they resulted in avoidable crashes with fire outbreaks, leading to wanton loss of precious lives and destruction to properties.

Nairaland GeneralJos Electricity Staff Dies Of Electrocution by Hart11(op): 5:38pm On Apr 27, 2024
Reports emerging today revealed that the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) experienced a tragic incident as one of its employees was fatally electrocuted while conducting repairs in the Abbatoir area of Jos South Local Government Council in Plateau State.

The deceased, identified simply as Friday, was reportedly carrying out necessary repairs in the Abbatoir community when he was electrocuted due to the sudden restoration of power to the high-tension pole he was working on.

Naija News understands that this unfortunate incident has left the community in shock and mourning.
A resident who spoke to The Nation noted that Friday was known for his dedication to his duties and his prompt response to customer calls whenever there was a fault in his assigned area.

Despite efforts by journalists to contact the JEDC’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Elijah Adakole, no response has been received as of this report.

Sierra Leone’s Energy Minister, Kanja Sesay Resigns Over Electricity Crisis

Meanwhile, Sierra Leone’s minister of energy, Alhadji Kanja Sesay, has tendered his resignation.

Naija News understands that Sesay’s resignation comes amidst recent disruptions in the country’s electricity supply.
According to a statement from the president’s office on Friday, the specific reasons for Sesay’s resignation were not officially disclosed, and the energy ministry did not provide any comment in response to AFP’s request.

As per a press release from the presidency, the ministry will now be directly overseen by President Julius Maada Bio, with the assistance of two other officials.

Sesay’s resignation coincided with the government’s payment of $18.5 million to Turkish Karpowership and Transco-CLSG group, two power providers to whom Sierra Leone owed a total of $40 million.

It remains unclear whether Sesay’s resignation is directly linked to these payments. As reported in the media, power was restored in Freetown after a two-month period of outages following the announcement of the payments.

Karpowership, which has been supplying electricity to Sierra Leone through a floating offshore unit since 2018, recently reduced its capacity from 65 megawatts to just five due to payment issues.

“We are pleased to confirm that the electricity supply has returned to full capacity in Freetown,”the Turkish group said in a statement after the latest payment was announced.

Christianity EtcEFCC Arrests Ilorin Pastor Over Alleged N3.9m Fraud by Hart11(op): 8:19am On Apr 07, 2024
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested an Ilorin based clergyman, Prophet Adeniyi James, for allegedly defrauding a member of his church to the tune of N3.9 million.

A statement by the Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, on Saturday, said the Ilorin Zonal Command arrested James on April 2, 2024 for the alleged offence.

It was gathered that James is the General Overseer of Christ Apostolic Church, CAC, Freedom City Prophetic and Deliverance Ministry in Ilorin.

Oyewale noted that the victim, Oluwole Babarinsa, in a petition to the Commission, alleged that James called him out during a church programme sometime in 2021, declaring that he had a revelation that he (Babarinsa) would travel abroad.

“The petitioner said the cleric, in the course of giving the revelation, asked him about his preferred country, which he replied ‘Canada’ and they agreed to talk later in order to perfect arrangements for the trip.

“The petitioner said James later told him that he had a friend in Lagos who could help him facilitate his relocation to Canada, but at a cost of N1.7 million and N2.5 million for processing of flight ticket and travel documents, respectively.

“Babarinsa added that he had to sell some of his properties and took some loans before he could raise N3,980,000 which he gave the prophet to facilitate his quick relocation to Canada.

“After prolonged waiting with no result, the petitioner became agitated and began to query the prophet’s vision, prompting him to ask for a refund of his money.

“All efforts and entreaties to the suspect to refund his money yielded no positive result,” EFCC spokesman said.

The suspect would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of the investigations, Oyewale added.

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Kogi State, Muri Ajaka, on Saturday, condemned the recent killings in some communities in the Omala Local Government Area of the state.

The PUNCH reported that no fewer than 19 people were killed while yet to be ascertained the number of houses that were razed during the attacks.

Eyewitnesses said on Friday that the incident happened on Thursday when the gunmen mobilised in what he described as a “reprisal” and invaded the two communities inflicting maximum damages.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Ajaka called on President Bola Tinubu to wade into the worsening security situation in the state by declaring a state of emergency to end the ‘incessant senseless killings.’

He said, “I condemn in strong terms the reoccurring maiming and killing of innocent Kogites in Bagana, Otutubatu, Iyade, Agbenema, Agojeju-Odo and other affected communities in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State.

“The life of every Kogite is sacred and important. It is the responsibility of the state government to protect the masses against internal and external aggression. It is high time the state government sat up to its primary responsibility of securing the Kogi state.

“I urge the current occupants of Lugard House to put an end to the crises and heightened insecurity in Kogi State by mobilising all the resources needed to solve the present conflict and to prevent future occurrences or step aside.

The security apparatus of the state should be deployed to maintain order and stability in the affected areas immediately.

“I call on President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to intervene in the matter since the state government has failed the people.

I am certain that the President will not allow his government to be overrun by insecurity in any part of the country and therefore, Kogi State should not be allowed to turn into a killing field.

“To this end, Mr President should declare a state of emergency in Kogi State because over 35 people were brutally killed and the state government is doing absolutely nothing about it.

“I am also appealing to the Inspector General of Police, all the service chiefs, and the National Security Adviser to swiftly intervene and thoroughly investigate the cause of the persistent crisis.

“I seek humanitarian assistance for those displaced by the conflict. I share in the grief of the families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident and call on the people to be steadfast and cooperate with the men of our security forces for the restoration of peace.”

A police escort attached to the Abuja-Kaduna train route reportedly died aboard the train while conveying passengers from Kaduna to Abuja on Thursday.

A source privy to the incident disclosed that the officer allegedly complained about chest pain before succumbing.

The source revealed that before a passenger, identified as a doctor, could attend to him to manage the situation, the police officer had already passed away.

The source said, “A police officer, who was one of the escorts on an Abuja-Kaduna train, just died. He left home in good health. But later during the journey, he complained of chest pain and asked his colleague to get him some glucose and water.

“There was no emergency medical care on the train. Before a doctor, who was also a passenger, could come, the officer had already passed away.”

It was further gathered that a few minutes after the train arrived in Abuja, a police team drove into the train station to retrieve the corpse for transportation to an undisclosed location.

When contacted for a reaction, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Railway Corporation, Mahmud Yakubu, promised to get back to our correspondent but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report, despite repeated calls to his line.

Efforts to reach the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, also proved abortive as calls and messages to his line were unanswered.

President Bola Tinubu has thanked Mr. Jim Obazee, for his services as the Special Investigator of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other related entities, declaring that the investigation has officially come to a close.

Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement, quoted the President as commending Mr. Obazee for the dedication and professionalism he exercised in handling the “complexities of this critical national assignment.”

Ngelale said, “Subsequent to the conclusion of the assignment and the submission of a final comprehensive report, and with the winding up of all apparatuses used during the scope of the task which terminated on March 31, 2024, the investigation is formally closed, with all appropriate law enforcement and regulatory agencies already conducting follow-up action.

“The President thanks Mr. Obazee for answering the call of duty while wishing him success in his future endeavours
.”

Recall that President Tinubu in July appointed Obazee, former Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), to investigate the activities of the apex bank under Emefiele.

Following the findings of Obazee and his team, the former CBN Governor is already facing charges in court.

The report presented to the President against the former CBN Boss highlighted unauthorised funding of offshore bank accounts, fraudulent cash withdrawals from the CBN vault, gross financial misconduct involving the former governor and his Deputy Governors, substantial fixed deposit holdings amounting to £543.4 million, among others.

The report also highlighted manipulations in the Naira exchange rate, irregularities in the e-Naira project, unauthorised printing of new currency denominations, and substantial expenditures on legal fees.

Suspected Fulani gunmen, early Friday morning, invaded Agojeju-Odo, a community in Omala Local Government Council in Kogi East Senatorial District, killing scores.

DAILY POST gathered that the marauders who are fully armed surrounded the community and opened fire, killing and burning houses.

A community leader, who escaped by the whiskers, but pleaded to remain anonymous, spoke with our correspondent, saying they were caught unawares.

He revealed that 27 corpses have been recovered as of the time of filing this report, while some local vigilante men have moved into the bush looking for missing persons.

He explained that rumour has been rife in the past three weeks of the possible invasion which was brought to the attention of the recently appointed Local Government Council Caretaker Chairman, Mark Edibo, but they were assured of safety and protection.

He said: “There was a misunderstanding between a young man in Agojeju-Odo with a Fulani herder on his farm after cattles ate up his yam tubers, which resulted in a fight; the caretaker chairman intervened.

“Since then, the herders vowed that they will mobilize and get back and there has been apprehension
,” the source said.

Speaking with Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, he confirmed the attack, but said the Commissioner of Police immediately drafted the tactical squad to the scene to restore normalcy.

According to him, the tactical squad which comprises Mobile Police, Soldiers and Vigilante men were drafted after a distress call, and they are currently on ground.

The Police Spokesman could not confirm the figure of dead persons, while he promised to get back after speaking with the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Omala Local Government Council.

“As for the figure of dead persons, I can’t confirm now. I will call you after I have spoken with the DPO in charge of Omala, but I know that so many people sustained gunshot injuries,” he said.
