anorexicmuster:

You must be new here.

Nairaland has, and always has , been like that.

The thing is, the internet is built on and runs on 'freedom of speech' (Whether that is absolute is another thing). Add the anonimity...and people let loose.

Anyway, you know what to do. SEE A BIGOTED COMMENT....ALERT THE MODS, OR MAIL THE MODS...OR USE THE REPORT BUTTON.

You can not hide behind the cloak of "freedom of speech" and allow mischief-makers to hijack your platform. Just take a look at what is currently happening in the US where Facebook has been brought under the spotlight for political polarization and the toxic effects of social media.

Gone are the days that platforms like Nairaland can use freedom of speech as an excuse.
Politics / Mr. Seun: The Level Of Tribalism And Ethnic E-warfare In Nairaland Is Sickening by IAfrica: 9:46am On Oct 06, 2021
Nairaland has become really sickening in recent months and years as tribalism now seems to be the order of the day here. Ethnic bigots have made Nairaland their home and are running amok. And the owner of the platform, Seun, seems to be enjoying it because he hasn't done anything to stop it.

It is really disappointing how the once interesting and fun Nairaland has become a playground for tribalists, ethnic bigots and religious charlatans. You can hardly open a thread nowadays where you won't see the Yorubas fighting the Igbos, the northerners fighting the southerners or Muslims exchanging expletives with Christians.

This has really gotten out of hand and I think it is high time Seun and the mods do something about it, because I no longer enjoy visiting or reading Nairaland and I know that thousands of people share the same sentiments. I don't know if it is a strategy to attract traffic, but it will really turn out to be counter-productive in the near future.

You can hide my post or ban me for saying what I just said but the fact will always remain the fact.

Politics / Lagos Named The Second Least Liveable City In The World - BBC by IAfrica: 9:30pm On Jun 09, 2021
Auckland in New Zealand has been named the world's most liveable city, in an annual ranking that has been shifted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) survey ranked 140 cities on factors including stability, infrastructure, education and access to healthcare.

But the pandemic proved to be the defining factor in this year's list.

It meant European cities fell while those in Australia, Japan and New Zealand rose up the rankings.

Those island countries responded swiftly to the coronavirus outbreak and were able to minimise cases and loosen restrictions.

European Union countries, meanwhile, had a sluggish start to their vaccine rollout and many member states imposed tough lockdowns which hurt their performance in this year's survey.

Auckland topped the list followed by Osaka in Japan, Adelaide in Australia, Wellington in New Zealand and the Japanese capital Tokyo. No UK cities made the top ten.

"Auckland rose to the top of the ranking owing to its successful approach in containing the Covid-19 pandemic, which allowed its society to remain open and the city to score strongly," the EIU said.

"European cities fared particularly poorly in this year's edition," it added. "Eight of the top ten biggest falls in the rankings are European cities."

Vienna, for example, fell from first place to 12th. The Austrian capital had led the list for several years, usually tied at the top with Melbourne.

But Hamburg in northern Germany had the most dramatic fall - dropping 34 places to 47th.

This trend was motivated by a "stress on hospital resources" which the study said had increased for most German and French cities, resulting in a "deteriorated healthcare score".

Lockdown measures and restrictions on movement also reduced overall liveability, the study said.

"Cities across the world are now much less liveable than they were before the pandemic began, and we've seen that regions such as Europe have been hit particularly hard," the EIU said.

While the top of the list has shifted, the study said there had been much less movement at the bottom.

Damascus remains the city where life is most difficult, largely because of Syria's continuing civil war. Many of the cities that ranked poorly have been blighted by conflict, which has put pressure on their health systems and infrastructure.

Politics / Full Text Of What Pope Francis Told IPOB Members, Others At St Peters Square by IAfrica: 9:03pm On Mar 02, 2016
Vatican City – God’s patience towards sinners is without limit, yet the time for conversion is now, Pope Francis said during his Sunday Angelus address at the Vatican.

Read IPOB statement ”The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Tuesday released the text of Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis address to over 35,000 who gathered last Sunday at the Vatican City for the weekly Angelus, saying that Pope has warned their oppressors, the government and Nigeria Military and their agents to repent, stop killing Biafra agitators or face the wrath of God that will be catastrophic.”

“It is never too late to convert, but it is urgent, it is now! Let us begin today,” said the Pope Feb. 28 to the crowds in St. Peter’s Square. Delivering his remarks before leading those present in the Marian prayer, the Pope spoke on Jesus’ “invincible patience,” explaining how God’s “unyielding concern for sinners” should provoke impatience in ourselves.

“Have you thought of God’s patience? Have you even thought of his unyielding concern for sinners, how this should provoke impatience against ourselves?”

“It is never to late to convert! Never! Up until the last moment: The patience of God who waits for us.” Pope Francis recounted the story from St. Therese of Lisieux, who prayed for the conversion of a criminal who had been condemned to death, and had refused interventions from the priest. It was not until his final moment that he took the Crucifix held by the priest and kissed it.

“The patience of God! And he does the same with us, with all of us!” the Pope said. “And this is his mercy.” Reflecting on the day’s readings, Pope Francis remarked how everyday newspapers report on violence and catastrophes. He tied this to the Gospel reading which refers to two tragic events of the time: the Romans sacking the temple, and the collapse of the Siloam tower in Jerusalem which killed eighteen people.

The Pope says Jesus knows his listeners are “superstitious” in interpreting such events as punishment for sins. “Jesus definitively refutes this point of view, because God does not permit tragedies to punish sins,” he said, but “asserts that those poor victims were no worse than others.

” Rather, Jesus uses these examples as warnings that sinners will perish as these victims did if they do not repent, the Pope added, citing the Gospel. Even today, there is the temptation to blame disasters on the victims, “or even on God himself,” the pontiff said.

However, in order to take the path of the Gospel, Jesus “calls us to change our heart, to radically make an about turn in our life, abandoning our compromises with evil,” the Pope said, citing hypocrisy as an example.

“I think we all have in us a little bit of hypocrisy,” he said in an off-the-cuff remark.

Stressing the need for conversion, the Pope warned against the temptation toward self-justification: “From what do we need to convert? Are we not all good people, believers, even sufficiently practicing?” Despite being like the fig tree which fails to produce fruit, Jesus “with limitless patience” delays killing the tree for another year, Pope Francis observed.

He reflected on the Jubilee Year of Mercy as a year of grace, the period in the Church and our lives before Christ’s “glorious return,” and which is “punctuated by a certain number of Lents which offer us opportunities for repentance and salvation.”

The Jubilee of Mercy is an Extraordinary Holy Year which officially commenced December 8 – the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception – with the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica.

It will close Nov. 20, 2016 with the Solemnity of Christ the King. After the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Francis reflected on the ongoing crisis of refugees fleeing from “war and other inhumane situations.”

He especially acknowledged Greece and other countries “on the front line” for their work in offering “generous assistance” to those crossing their borders, and called on the international community for a “unanimous response” in helping distribute the weight of the crisis.

“For this reason, we need to firmly and unreservedly focus on negotiations,” he said. The pontiff went on to welcome “with hope” the current ceasefire in Syria involving government and rebel forces, which has entered its second day.

“I invite all to pray so that this window of opportunity can give relief to the suffering people, encouraging the necessary humanitarian aid, and open the way to dialogue and much desired peace,” he said. Pope Francis went on to extend his “closeness” to the people of Fiji, where tropical cyclone Winston killed more than 40 people and left tens of thousands more homeless.

“I pray for the victims and for those engaged with the relief efforts.”

His Holiness Pope Francis Meets & Sympathizes With Biafran Supporters, Urges Dialogue - Vanguard

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday, released the text of the Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis address to thousands of IPOB members who gathered last Sunday at the Vatican City for the weekly Angelus, saying the Pope has cautioned their oppressors, the Nigerian government and its military and their agents to repent and stop killing Biafra agitators or face the wrath of God that will be catastrophic.

The text of the Catholic Pontiff address which was made available to Vanguard by the IPOB Media and Publicity Officer, Mr. Emma Powerful, disclosed that the Pope advised the Biafra agitators and the crowd that gathered at St Peter’s Square from the balcony of the Apostolic Palace to be patient in all they are doing, that God’s patience towards their oppressors is without limit but the time to end their oppression is now.

IPOB quoted the Pontiff to have said that “it is never too late to convert an oppressor to change from his evil activities, including murderous activities, but it is urgent, it is now, let them begin today to change from their oppression and killing of innocent people through all sorts of violent means, including the jack boot of the military.”

According to the pro Biafra group, the Pope spoke on “invincible patience,” explaining how God’s “unyielding concern for sinners” should provoke patience in us, asking if we have thought of God’s patience. “

Have you thought of His unyielding concern for sinners, how this should provoke patience among people, including governments, instead of killing people on slightest provocation or no provocation at all, let alone people who are protesting against unfair treatments or for something they feel is their right?”

IPOB said the Pope told them that God does not permit tragedies to punish sins but rather, that Jesus uses warnings that sinners will perish if they do not repent, adding that if the oppressors of peaceful agitators like the Biafra agitators in Nigeria fail to repent, the wrath of God will be catastrophic against them.

The Pontiff according to IPOB, welcomed the need to firmly and unreservedly focus on negotiations and dialogue between governments and agitators all over the world including Biafra agitators and the government of Nigeria, like it was done in Syria which has brought the current ceasefire in the country, involving government and rebel forces. “I invite all to pray so that this window of opportunity can give relief to the suffering people and agitators and encourage the necessary humanitarian aid, and open the way to dialogue and much desired peace” he said.

Planned deportation

In another development, the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has condemned the plan by the Norwegian government to illegally deport Lotachukwu Okolie, the detained leader of pro Biafra agitators in Norway and his counterpart Onyedikachi Ani, also detained, who is married to a Norwegian and has a child with her, and other Biafra activists in the country.

According to a statement by the leader of MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu, a plan is allegedly being hatched to deal with Biafra agitating groups. The statement read: “Norway and Nigeria have already perfected plans of deporting them through chartered cargo airplane from Belgium, to transport them to Lagos on March 9, 2016.

The information we have is that the Norwegian government have struck a deal with Nigerian Immigrations Service, in Lagos to accept all the deportees and bypass the embassy which knows about their pro Biafra activities but cooked up lies against them and consider them threat to Nigeria security, which means they will be eliminated on arrival.

No to falsehood

Worried by all the rumours making the rounds on the issue of Biafra, the umbrella body of Igbo Socio-Cultural organisations, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has denied meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on agitation for Republic of Biafra and warned proponents of Radio Biafra to desist from airing falsehood because ‘’he who goes to equity must come with clean hands.’’

The apex Igbo group gave the warning following Radio Biafra reports that Ohanaeze had aborted the actualisation of Biafra as a country, that some white people from America held a meeting with Ndigbo through Ohanaeze with the intent of delivering a United Nation’s Certificate of Recognition and Independence of the Republic of Biafra.

Describing the claims as a ruse, Ohanaeze Secretary General, Dr. Joe Nwaorgu, in a statement, said the reports were distortions of the visit of the new United States Consul-General in Nigeria, John Bray and his team to the South-East, during which they had a meeting with Ohanaeze at Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu.

Noting that the visit was part of Bray’s familiarisation tour of the country, Nwaorgu said the consul-general ‘’had meetings with the governors in the various states and in Enugu, the headquarters of Ohanaeze, he had a meeting with us on Igbo perception of Nigeria.”

Politics / Igbo Monarch And Chancellor Of FUT Minna Hails Biafran Agitators by IAfrica: 10:19pm On Feb 28, 2016
The Chairman of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty Eze Eberechi Dike, has hailed the call for a Biafran nation, adding that the agitation for the Republic of Biafra is to enhance the peace and unity amongst Igbos.

Eze Dike, who threw his support behind the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, said during an interview with newsmen on Sunday after his interaction with Igbos living in Niger State, that the ongoing agitation will put back the igbo nation on track to self sufficiency.

According to him: “Those behind the agitation deserve a pat on the back because the objectives behind the cause is not for anything but for peace and progress of the eastern region.‎

“My problem has been the unity of the Igbo people because this is the only way we can achieve unity and my goal has always been how we can bring positive change to our people.

“As a royal father, we are seen as father to all.
“So what we need to be doing always is to continue to emphasise on those things that will bring positive change to my people.

“That is what I am supposed to be supporting because my people come first.”

The traditional ruler, who is also the Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, promised to move the institution from its present ranking both in Nigeria and Africa to a new level.

“Education is a right for every Nigerian child and as the Chancellor of FUT, I promise to bring new and wonderful innovation for the overall development of technological education in Nigeria.”

Politics / WAEC Offers Free Form To Kemi Adeosun To Resit Maths Exam After Gaffe by IAfrica: 8:21pm On Feb 24, 2016
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has offered Kemi Adeosun, the minister of finance, to resit an exam in mathematics, The Whistler reports.

While addressing a press briefing last week, Adeosun alleged that one of the exams body in Nigeria made N16 billion from sale of forms and other services, and got additional N6billion from the federal government bringing the total to ‘N24billion’.

Reacting to Adeosun’s arithmetic mistake, Iyi Uwadiae, the registrar of WAEC, faulted the minister’s allegation and offered her a free form to resit maths exam.

“It’s not enough to go to the Senate and reel out figures. The minister should know, that what Nigerian students pay to sit for WAEC examinations is simply an operational/management cost, that covers registration, data keeping and management, printing of examination papers, logistics, marking of scripts and production of certificates. And all these cost about N16 billion Naira.

“WAEC examination is not designed as a revenue generating source for the Federal Government. In fact governments in the past subsidized the examination fees, just to encourage education. The N6 billion she talked about is for payment of salaries and overheads for staff of the council.

“However, we do not know the mathematical formula the Honourable Minister used, when she said the summation of N16 billion Naira and N6 billion Naira was N24 billion Naira. “I think somebody needs to resit her WAEC mathematics examination. And we in WAEC have offered to give her a free WAEC form in this respect,” he said.

Meanwhile, Adeosun’s error generated mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media. While some people viewed her error as an indication of incompetence, others came to her defence, suggesting that her error was a pointer to the fact that no one was beyond making mistakes.
