₦40 is my WACC now

Please go by your gut instinct and not by what the naysayers are saying. Same way I was discouraged when some folks learnt that I had accumulated over one million units of OANDO at BEP of 6.80 and talked me out of the "mistake". Sold all my OANDO at 7 naira, and see where it is now, and the potential momentum it's gathering. So please, go with your gut instincts irrespective of naysayers

Tip1

Do you know that there are immense opportunities hidden in the Food Industry (directly and indirectly). So apart from working as a Quality Control staff in a food/beverage processing company, you can upgrade to:

1. Being a Quality Assurance Specialist (when you upgrade your skills, of course);

2. Being a Food Safety Management Systems Auditor......Yes you read right. There are professional food-related auditors whose services are in high demand in the Food Industry all over the world. The science of conducting Audits is not limited to the accounting profession only.

This reminds me of an experience I'll be back to share......
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Ask Me Any Question About Securing A Job In The Food or Related Industry by IderadeAratumi: 6:54am On Jul 29, 2023
In my present organization where I work ( by the way, you can check out my LinkedIn profile here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/olutope-okegbola-84a59a150

(My mentees on NL usually accuse me that I'm not on LinkedIn and my usual reply is that this Monicker on NL is not my real name grin)

So, as I was saying; I interviewed for a higher position very recently and everyone on the panel (internationals) were quite impressed with my delivery during the interview. I didn't realize how impressed they were until 2 weeks ago when one of them sought me out and said she'll be in Nigeria for one week very soon and she'll like to meet with me. I was like 😯 You guys have not yet given me the position and you are already looking forward to further engagements with me to the extent that you went about asking people (maybe HR) about my contact details and then getting in touch with me......

I need to send some emails...... I'll be back

So, if you wish to work in Technical Food/Beverage processing environments like............ Possibly as a graduate of Food science, Food technology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, Agricultural Science, Nutrition or other related courses. Or peradventure you don't have a background in these courses but you need technical skillset that will make interviewers prioritize you over the seemingly "qualified"....... Then you need to be aware of some proven tips I'll be sharing in this thread.

If you are able to update your CV with the knowledge you gain from these recommendations I'll be sharing here, then you are several steps ahead of your mates, and that's not an exaggeration.

Take this from someone with over a decade years of hands-on experience in the Food Industry in and out of Nigeria.

Are you even aware that the Food Industry is the silent money making machine only few people have successfully tapped into its potential?

Almost every one is now hyping Tech and IT, while being ignorant of the amazing global opportunities in the Food Industry due to emerging technologies that if you can master, will make your interviewers be in awe of you...... And that's not an exaggeration cool

Good day Nairalanders, especially the Job landers. (Yeah! You're several steps closer to securing your dream job in the commercial food industry if you are able to follow the recommendations I'll be sharing on this thread).

I graduated from school in 2008 and had to enrol for my Masters degree in 2012 when a job wasn't forthcoming, so I know what it means first hand to be in desperate need of a befitting employment.

Anyway to the crux of the matter......

I created this thread for those who studied certain courses in school including those who wish work in a food handling environment or those who wish to work in the more sophisticated food industry, supermarkets (as a supervisor of food handling operations, etc).

I'll be sharing these tips in different posts.

(I am an extremely busy professional, so I may not be available all the time online. However one thing I can assure you is that I will attend to every one's question/enquiry smiley

Enough of preamble......... Let's delve into the crux of the matter.......

Secondly, Cover Letters

1. Don't start the letter with "My name is.........................."

2. Tailor your letter to the requirements of the job as displayed in the advertisement. Some letters are sooooo generic and can fit in for different roles in different organizations. This is very wrong. and the recruiter can discern that you are not serious.

3. Replace words like : teaching, training, with "capacity building". Look for technical words in your field and infuse into the cover letter.
If you are involved in teaching others, do not state it in your document as teaching. Rephrase to capacity building. For instance instead of saying I successfully taught 60 students and they all passed their exams, as: "I successfully built the capacity of 60 students which contributed immensely towards their advancement in...................... as evidenced by.....................................

4. Don't conclude the letter by begging the recruiter to hire you; "I hope you will consider me" As in? shocked Wetin be that? The recruiter needs to see that the organization needs you, more than you need the organization.

I'll share an edited template

skybeginner:
I just fininshed reviewing CVs + Cover Letters and providing recommendations on areas to be improved upon for those that sent theirs in.

Even though a few needed only very little modifications, I am quite saddened by the majority of CVs and Cover letters I came across. We really have a long way to go. Without having a basic acceptable CV/CL, the vacancies posted on this page may not amount to much when you send in your applications. There is no way some can be invited for test talk less of interview based on these CVs, considering the calibre of applicants you are competing against.

It is quite exhausting going through each CV + Cover Letter and making tailor-made recommendations for improvement but I finished doing it anyway. Subsequently on this thread, I shall be sharing insights on how/how not to draft a CV or Cover Letter based on the generic and very common mistakes I've seen people make in these documents. It's going to be a very busy weekend as usual, but I'll squeeze out time to get it done.

Good night ooops Good Morning smiley

Good Morning all. So while reviewing CVs/ Cover Letters sent, I observed the following errors in a lot of documents:

A. CVs first.

1. Career Objective is not well thought out; sounds very abstract, very generic and not convincing/persuasive enough.

2. Conspicously coloured fonts:

If you do not want to maintain the traditional black font and you need a coloured font to use, kindly stick with deep navy blue. Red, green, etc should not be considered for use in your CV at all. If you need to make an emphasis on any part of your CV, bolden it, instead of making use of conspicuous fonts to pass home your message.

3. Tiny fonts and single line spacing
This makes your CV look mungled up; Always be conscious of the fact that you are competing with a calibre of high profile people from different parts of the world and the recruiter has very little time to devote towards trying to get a grasp of what you've written in your CV.

4. Not elaborating on your achievements or experience

Some only stated the places they've worked and their positions; they did not bother to elaborate on their duties and achievements. This automatically tells the recruiter that you are lazy, complacent and rigid. Automatic disqualification.

5. Distorted paragraphs and inconsistent line spacing; this tells the recruiter that you are a disorganized person who may find it difficult to thrive in a structured organisation.

6. Generally, not knowing how to infuse your achievements within your roles. The outcomes of your roles are your achievements. You state your roles and you forget to state how these roles have impacted the organisation positively, which is the bulk of your achievement in that organisation. So how does the recruiter know the value you are bringing on board?

7. Listing several references: Referees, if to be included in your CV should be reduced to 2.
No need to list up to 4 or 5 references.

jabberjawz:
Just to encourage folks here, do not limit yourselves to open positions in Nigeria, try to apply for international postings.......am a living testimony, I never knew anybody in the UN, I was just a young curious individual who was looking to push myself beyond my limits (immediate environment). I started applying for roles both local & international, and I landed my first UN interview with the UN Military logistics base in Italy. I got to the final stage of the interview but I got knocked out (I under-estimated the caliber of people I was competing with). It really hurt me, but I dusted myself, reflected on areas where I thought I fell short, re-packaged my cv & started applying again.

After sending out many applications, the next year I got invited for another interview with another UN agency, this time I went ballistic with my preparations, did a lot of research/readings, asking questions, creating scenarios, penned out over 100 or more possible questions to expect in the test & interview. With God's help, boom I landed the international offer, infact I received 2 job offers on the same day (USAID & UN) I eventually accepted the UN offer. I never knew anyone in the UN or USAID system, never studied abroad, I studied & lived all my life in Naija until I left to resume with the UN.

In summary, do not believe those that keep saying you need to have God father somewhere or this or that...........the only God father is the father in heaven who opens a door that no man can close.

I decided to share my story just to inspire folks that you can do it, keep pushing, keep applying, keep researching/reading, keep learning new things to add to your resume, research current trends in your field & try to update your skills, don't give up.................and don't forget the "God Factor"

Peace..... smiley

Thanks so much for this. Something happened yesterday which made me believe that God is about to pick someone's call through this thread. It is only a matter of time and dedication

Let me answer from the bottom

For validation of assessment, the startup I work for (which I don't want to disclose) has a standard for each assessment and most of those standards were gotten from some financial institutions.

I have analysed for couple of industry including financial, energy, food, health, and the likes...At my stage right now, I think I should be able to analyse any industry. The major requirements is developing my research skills

Okay. What I see play out in most instances in your situation and other related ones, is what I have explained to a poster here. International agenciesNo, let me talk about the one I am sure of. The UN may not engage your services directly as an individual. 2 things usually paly out in cases such as this:

1. The coy you work with may be engaged by the UN to carry out these assessments for some service providers being contemplated to be awarded certain contracts

2. In some instances, the UN has outsourced activity 1 above to a 2nd party (usually a certification body, and not private establishments) to conduct these assessments on its behalf. As such, the certification bodies need independent auditors equipped with the required training, experience, certifications and technical capacity and this is what may be applicable to you as an individual.

Few months ago, one of such certification bodies in Europe (in contract with the UN) needed the services of an an auditor in the health industry, to audit (conduct technical assessment of) a particular Nigerian company for something like this, (although not sustainability). They could not travel to Nigeria for the assessment due to the pandemic and also to minimize cost expended. Instead, they searched and found the profile of a Nigerian online, conducted their background check and eventually engaged him for the service. Needless to say what currency payment was made in.

This is a tangible route you can explore if you are creative enough to package yourself as such, since you have the requisite training, skills and experience.

Like I always tell my mentees, "create your own opportunities; dont wait for the UN to create one for you". The opportunity you create has the potential of being utilized by the UN (or other international agencies) directly or indirectly.

My role is to make researched analysis that critically assess the industrial activities of companies. Through this analysis, one can determine whether the company is having a positive or negative impact on the environment and society.

Which industries have you analysed?. Which other industries can you analyse? What training do you have to facilitate these assessments? How do you validate the results of your assessment?

Apologies if my questions are too much. It is not mandatory that you answer any if you do not want to.

ceeceeuwa:

Can you enumerate on some of those values please?

Ok. Value is extensive and its expression can not be clearly defined as it varies depending on individual circumstances. Since our circumstances are different, therefore the way we go about adding value to ourselves will definitely be different. Generally, it is more about going beyond what is being expected of you at any particular time and taking the initiative to deliver much more than you were asked or paid to do. Now this plays out differently for different people based on different circumstances.

When you stretch yourself beyond your present capacity (intellectually, physically), the immediate results you get are negligible compared with massive results that await you because you will be percieved as a person of great value when a bigger opportunity beckons. This is when preparation meets opportunity because most people are too lazy to stretch themselves beyond what their employers expect them to do, you easily stand out from the crowd as you've gone through an unusual route which is hard to find in a crowd of jobseekers.

I will still find time to highlight my journey in this regard as the thread progresses

You haven't responded to this yet... Thanks

Hmmmm. You're talking about the next phase which has started being implemented in the UN. We are already tending towards ensuring that industrial activities of all third party service providers engaged by some UN agencies does not impact negatively on the environment.

As such, some agencies now request service providers to present evidences or other industry specific certifications which authenticates that their activities are compliant with Sustainable Business Models for that particular industry. As such if a company can not convince such agencies that their activities are sustainable and do not impact negatively on the environment, chances of engagement with the UN is reduced significantly. This, I am aware of.

So, what extactly is your role? Do you engage companies and help them to come up with Sustainable Business Models? If yes, which industry? If no, expatiate how you come into play here.
