Politics / 2023: Coalition Of Northern Groups Endorse Osinbajo For President by Joylove2324(f): 3:06pm On Jan 05, 2022
A Coalition of Northern Nigeria political groups has endorsed Nigeria's Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as the preferred choice of Northerners in the forthcoming 2023 general election.

The coalition made thier position known through a communiqué issued and signed by Engr. Daniel Shawulu for Arewa Consensus Assembly, Suleman Makama, National Partnership campaign project, Khalid Mohammed Joint Participation for Development Initiative at a one day joint conference on northern political participation and power shift with the theme “Northern Agenda: Our Real Solution at Arewa House in Kaduna State.

The one day conference according to the Organisers was a response to the need and clamour for a greater and sustainable Nigeria beyond 2023.

The group stated that after a critical discussions and deliberations on political issues bordering on grass-root political participation, Arewa/northern interest, larger interest, unity and peace of Nigeria, power rotation and the forthcoming general election, the conference came up with the following outcome;

"The Joint conference observed critically the present security challenges in Northern Nigeria, condemned it in totality and appealed to the general public to partner with Government in bringing an end to the incessant mayhem.

"The Joint Conference further observed that the insecurity while dominant in the north is a national problem that must be urgently addressed using broader strategies in support of the military and other law enforcement interventions.

"The real interest of the North is about the vast majority of people in the North, not the parochial interest of a few who are usually more vocal, and claim to speak on behalf of the “North”. The true desire of the North is a better Nigeria for all where there is hope and fulfillment.

"The North recognizes that there is an urgent responsibility to build and foster confidence between the different ethnicities and geo-political zones of Nigeria, as well as mitigate religious differences and insecurities between the people of Nigeria.

"The unfortunate perception that the “North” is determined to hold on to power including by attempting to foist a retention of the presidency in the North is causing division and mistrust for northerners by other ethnicities in Nigeria.

"This erosion of confidence, trust and brotherhood between fellow citizens in the South against the North is not the creation or intendment of either the core, or the majority of northerners.

"The Joint Conference realised that it is the misguided desires and personal interest of a few that has been projected as a Northern or Arewa agenda.

"The Joint Conference also recognized that these desires and personal interests are not in consonance or geared towards fulfillment of aspirations and benefits of the larger Northern populace, rather the limited personal interest of the few proponents.

"The Joint Conference underscored the realities and history of failed attempts to pursue presidential electoral victories in the absence of understandings across the Niger.

"The Joint Conference noted that these successive unsuccessful attempts in 2003, 2007, 2011 came to an end in 2015 by a coalition, consolidation, cooperation, collaboration and partnership with the South (more particularly, South-West), and North Central Nigeria.

"This model from 2015 was repeated in 2019 and has demonstrably established a system and framework for secure and trusted power rotation between relevant zones, and continuous partnership for governance, equity, fairness and justice.

"The Conference recognized the urgent need to ensure the North’s credibility and influence by respecting equality, equity, fairness and partnership.

As such, all things considered, and for both the short and long term interests and benefit of the North, the Joint Conference resolved and hereby declares that it is appropriate, invariable and inescapable that the choice of the presidency in the 2023 elections must emerge from the South-West region of Nigeria.

The consequences of the North’s failure to accede and participate in ensuring and supporting rotation of power to the South-West will be dire for the short and long term political and developmental interests and relevance of the North.

Failure to urgently and actively support and participate in this objective may divide the North irreparably, and potentially severe the political alignment within the North, especially with the North Central states. Such a division or misalignment will damage the North’s politically, and potentially erode the influence of the North in presidential, and National Assembly leadership electoral selection processes.
Northern agenda: The real solution of maintaining sustained controlling relevance in Nigerian national politics is for the North to champion rotation to the Southwest.

The Conference admits and recognized that Nigeria is in a delicate situation, and our unity is fragile because of security challenges that have been cloaked many times in religious and ethnic apparel, especially by propagandists.
Separatist agenda by propagandist and separation apologists have further challenged internal security and peace with arguments marauding “restructuring” as a smokescreen for separation.
A disproportional amount of banditry and insecurity is attributed to religious and ethnic differences, instead of criminal conduct.

As such, the Joint Conference also admits and recognizes that this very sensitive issues necessitate’s major attention, consideration, and most importantly, compliance and adoption in selecting the next President of Nigeria.

The Joint Conference admits that the most acceptable next President of Nigeria will have an appeal that crosses ethnic, religious and other demographic lines, especially the youth considering the most recent history and trajectory of Nigeria.

Such a person must have a demonstrated record of service at a national level and a history of believing in the unity of Nigeria. Integrity and a proven record of modesty, energy, experience and conduct that exemplifies and inspired confidence across demographics and across the entire country are not negotiable.

In addition to the qualities, the Joint Conference strongly believes that ability to engage internationally, strong health, energy, mobility and versatility are vital attributes to lead Nigeria to a truly shared prosperity for all.
The Joint Conference noted with sadness that Nigeria has previously been united enough for religion not to play a vital role in matching tickets for leadership.

However, the Joint Conference recognizes the present day realities of Nigeria, and notes that under no circumstances can a selection that does not provide religious balance augur well, inspire or promote confidence, or in any way exhibit required sensitivities and lead to peace and progress under prevailing circumstances.

Accordingly, the Joint Conference states that it is abhorrent unacceptable and roundly rejected by Nigerians that a presidential and vice-presidential ticket will be dominated by candidates of the same faith, such as Muslim/Muslim. Under no circumstances should any aspiring or hopeful political party or candidacy be a consideration in the current national state of Nigeria.

"The Joint Conference after considering religious demographics of Nigeria, sentiments, views and opinions across the country concludes and recommends that a more probable electorally ticket will be a Christian Southwestern candidate matched with a Muslim vice from the North.

"Nigeria for long had been suffering from inconsistency of implementation of policies and program. For the purpose of finding a therapeutic dimension amidst present socio-economic and political circumstance, policies inaugurated by this present administration need a leader with requisite insight to consolidate the much desired results, and continuity of the structural programs commenced by this administration.

"Although the Joint Conference made its above deliberations, considerations and resolutions in the broader interest of the North, and not partisan or specific candidacy, the Joint Conference notes that the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo SAN, GCON fits and addresses the questions of balance, qualities and attributes expressed and resolved by the Joint Conference.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!

Politics / Osinbajo Leadership Person Of The Year Well Deserved by Joylove2324(f): 11:47am On Jan 05, 2022
Osinbajo Support Movement(OSM), a solidarity group advocating for the interest of Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo in the Nigeria’s political arena has noted that the Leadership Newspaper’s recognition of Prof Yemi Osinbajo as The Personality of the Year is worthy and very deserving.

In a statement made available in Abuja on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, the National Convener/Coordinator of the group, Mr Liberty Badmus noted that, “with the conferment of The Personality of the Year by Leadership Newspaper, they have just acknowledged our existential resolves, realities and contention about the VP”.

The group known for its vocal defence of Prof Yemi Osinbajo expressed that the Nigeria’s Vice President is indeed a capable man, “a Personality of all time”.

“Virtually all Nigerians woke up some 48 hours ago to the news of His Excellency, Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo being conferred as the Personality of the Year by the Leadership Newspaper. While we want to thank the Board of Management of Leadership Newspaper for their kind thoughtfulness and wit for that recognition, we wish to state that this award of recognition is a testament to the aged established virtues, work ethics and character of the Vice President that has been of public observation and gained consistent commentary for years.”

“It is of the knowledge of the general public, particularly Nigerians that the Vice President is truly deserving of this award and all other commendations coming his way. Here is a man whose official conducts and assignments has gained wide acceptability and credit. A man whose spiritual commitments maintained firmness and deposited for the good of the nation. A man whose ethical conducts remained at topnotch.”

“Leadership Newspaper could not have acknowledged someone else. Prof Yemi Osinbajo’s shadow reflects in every corner of the presidency and the nation. As the head of the Economic Team overseeing and managing the economic affairs of the country, policies and determining her prospects, he has kept the paddle firm in his hands reflecting with steady growths and developments. This is true of all other affairs and activities of the government under his watch or that he is consciously and unconsciously involved in.

We often receive statements and comments on the person of the VP. Nigerians marvel at his strength and creativity in attending to all official and political businesses before him. They say he is a workaholic, – it is correct of him. Nigerians say he is too brilliant, – OSM would acknowledge it affirmatively. Nigerians who read the Vice President’s offical and daily activities questions where a man in his 60s gets his energy to travel, have multiple meetings daily, show up in the least expected places, et al.”

The truth is, Prof Yemi Osinbajo does all he is being lauded for from his comfort zone. His brilliance, intelligence, strength, work ethics, sound managerial skills, healthy interpersonal relationships, loyalty, et al, are characteristics embedded in him for decades.

He is a trained and proficient lawyer with history of countless victories in court. Some had made revelations that he is kind and appreciate out-of-court settlements on matters he believes can thread that line. A professor with established path in the academia, and thousands of successful students(who are now SANs, Professors and accomplished professionals) doing well all around the world.”

“There is no better time than now to give that credit. Prof Yemi Osinbajo is indeed the personality of the year and personality of all time. We send congratulations to His Excellency on the deserved recognition and award. It means a lot to millions of his lovers, believers and progressives. Especially, those rooting for him to contest the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

OSM concludes that, “The Vice President shall continue to be inspired by the love and support he gained daily from Nigerians. We look forward to more of his best this year and beyond”.

Akande added that “Mr. President and the VP did not meet on New Year’s Day.”

Politics / Osinbajo: How Social Intervention Programmes Is Accelerating Development by Joylove2324(f): 9:30pm On Dec 22, 2021
In this piece, OLAOYE AYOTUNDE reflects on the national economic plans of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, rooted and implemented under the National Economic Sustainability Plan (NESP) as piloted by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who has been credited for the success of the initiative over his masterful administrative style .

It was Henry Douglas Dickinson, 1899-1968, a top Cambridge-trained historian of economic thought, who said: “Economic planning is the making of major economic decisions — by the conscious decision of a determinate authority, on the basis of a comprehensive survey of a country’s existing and potential resources and a careful study of the needs of the people.”

By implication, what he is saying is, “On the basis of the available resources and the needs of the people, development plans for a definite period are prepared beforehand by the central planning authority. And then the economic activities of the country are directed towards the implementation of the plans.”

Thus, essentials of a good plan must include, “an economic plan based upon the initial resources of the country, presupposing a careful inventory of present and future availability of manpower and domestic resources,” as much as setting up “feasible targets or goals for the terminal date.”

The economist said, such economic planning “sets out the feasible policies that permit achievement of the terminal (end-period) goals from the initial resources taking into account the intermediate economic resources that can be imported from abroad (through loans or gifts) and that can be produced at home out of the initial resources by the mechanism of domestic investment.”

It must also have “basic features” and whose basic objective of planning is “to exercise control over the private sector of an economy,” while he said “controls are exercised over scarce economic resources. When the economic resources of the country are rationally arranged with a predetermined purpose, it is called economic planning. It usually refers to planning by the State.

The economist listed important essential features of economic planning thus: “There must be a centralised planning authority for preparing the plans and suggesting the means for their implementation; and “before framing the plan, the planning authority should undertake an accurate survey of the available resources (both existing and potential) and the essential needs of the country.”

He also said: “An economic plan must have some definite aims and objectives;” not only that, “the plan should lay down a series of targets on the different lines of production such as agricultural, industrial,” and so on; while stating that a good economic planning, “should make a proper allocation of the proposed outlay into the different heads of development.

Similarly, “an economic plan must have a definite time limit, usually 5 years (as in our country) and there must be mutual consistency between the targets of the production of the different sectors,” the economist said.

Like corroborating H. D. Dickinson, other experts have succinctly put economic planning as “a resource allocation mechanism based on a computational procedure for solving a constrained maximization problem with an iterative process for obtaining its solution,” or as a process by which “key economic decisions are made or influenced by central governments.

This is why different countries of the world do prepare economic planning to cushion the effects of economic depression or in order to plan for the economic future of a State.

Same way, Nigeria under the Buhari-Osinbajo administration has since keyed into the need to properly plan for her economy, just as H. D. Dickson put it, knowing a proper plan is the fulcrum for national development.

Representing the Federal Government, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, who by his statutory constitutional role as the Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC), has piloted different policies as approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for execution, one of which was the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP), put in place, primarily to take care of the fallout of COVID-19 devastation among Nigerians in their private and business lives.

When the Covid-19 pandemic initially broke out in Nigeria in early 2020 followed by economic depression all over the world, Nigeria inclusive, to arrest the situation, President Mohammed Buhari set up an economic sustainability committee headed by the Vice President to look into how the pandemic will not have adverse effects on the economy of Nigerians and that of the country.

Immediately after their inauguration, Vice President Osinbajo and his team quickly swung into action and at the end of the day came out with an unprecedented Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP) initiative for the country.

It was through the ESP module Vice President Osinbajo and his committee developed an economic sustainability plan that touched every sector of the national economy, with so many other components catering to the personal needs of millions of Nigerians till date.

One of such branches of empowerment in the Economic Sustainability Plan is the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) component, which also has in it the payroll support for people working in the private sector, especially in private schools, where employees were paid N30,000 monthly for three months. This support initiative undoubtedly lifted the burden of salaries off the shoulders of employers who could not generate any income as of the time the COVID-19 pandemic was hard on the polity.

Besides the private sector beneficiaries, the N30,000 support scheme was also paid as a one-off grant to artisans who could not go out to make a living because of the nationwide lockdown. Likewise, sum of N50,000 MSME support grant was equally paid to the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of small enterprises to inject into their businesses which were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Further to these support initiatives, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also rolled out COVID-19 loans of different categories to revive businesses that were negatively affected by the pandemic, all under the ESP initiative. It was this MSMEs survival fund which cushioned the effects of the national economic downturn it was said brought Nigeria out of recession two times after the COVID-19 pandemic devastation.

Another important aspect of the ESP component Vice President Osinbajo and his team put in place to benefit Nigerians was the Mass Housing Programme (MHP). In the approach to this, the MHP was introduced to deliver up to 300,000 homes every year. The modalities set for this is for young professionals and artisans to organise themselves into small and medium scale co-operative businesses within the construction industry to develop these houses, which will be based on a set of standardized designs, while the material for building, especially cement, will be offered at reduced prices which is still to be funded by the government.

This programme will also prioritize the use of local labour and materials. Doors, windows and other materials will be produced, finished or assembled at mass housing construction sites. The local contents will be patronised 100% and automatically, this will boost the economy of stakeholders in these industries.

There is also the Mass Agriculture component of the Economic Sustainability Plan serving the agricultural sector with a plan to ensure the cultivation of between 20,000 and 100,000 hectares of new farmland in every state, as well as support offtake and agro-processing, with low-interest credit.

• The idea, as defined by the government is to create millions of direct and indirect job opportunities, while the infrastructural part of the programme is also set to benefit the generality of Nigerians. As made known, it is already segmented into about four components which include; the Extensive Public Works and Road Construction Programme; having in it the engagement of a minimum of 1,000 young Nigerians recruited per Local Government into what was announced as the largest public works programme in the history of Nigeria, amounting to 774,000 direct jobs, with individuals to be paid N60,000 from the sum of N52 billion appropriated for the scheme.

There will also be an extensive focus on the construction and repair of major and rural roads using locally available materials like limestone, cement and granite. The roads component will include the acceleration and expansion of the scope of the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme (RITCS).

• Further to the Mass Housing Programme (MPH) earlier mentioned, in such houses will be the implementation of another programme called the installation of Solar Home Systems (SHS). But overall, other categories of Nigerians will benefit from the scheme targeting 5 million households, serving about 25 million individual Nigerians who are currently not connected to the National Grid. Solar equipment manufacturers will be required to set up production facilities in Nigeria, to provide the materials required.

• Added the ESP bumper package is the Investment in Healthcare Infrastructure which will be done through a special intervention fund, as well as by tapping into an existing World Bank facility termed the Regional Disease Surveillance Systems Enhancement (REDISSE) programme as a buffer for the COVID-19 interventions in the states.

The REDISSE project is aimed at strengthening the national and regional cross-sector capacities for disease surveillance and also providing an immediate and effective response in the case of eligible health emergencies. Coupled with this, the government also planned to expand the National Social Investment Programme through the ESP.

• The Federal Government has said that the expansion plans for the National Social Investment Programmes (NESP) implementation will see to an increase in the number of cash transfer beneficiaries, N-Power volunteers and sundry traders enjoying small and microloans through the MarketMoni and TraderMoni schemes. The pre-existing conditional cash transfer will also be extended to cover a larger number of extremely poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

What makes this economic planning different in setting achievable goals and patterned along with the Henry Douglas Dickinson definition earlier given to it is the practicable and patriotic input of the Vice President Osinbajo-led committee. Much more, the Buhari-Osinbajo administration has since presented itself as a people-friendly one. Now, it is worth mentioning that the Osinbajo Style, as someone who has a mind for the betterment of Nigerians and especially the liberation of the poor masses, made it work. It wasn’t this good looking through the past activities of his predecessors, even in fulfilling their statutory constitutional role as chairmen of the National Economic Council (NEC).

One can then come to a conclusion that Vice President Osinbajo being a good person has played a major role in the planning and implementation of the economic sustainability plan that was submitted to the President just because he has a soft touch for President, as attested to President Buhari himself, who at a time described his Vice President as “a reliable and dedicated deputy.”

“I’m proud to have selected Osinbajo as my running mate and he has given a good account of himself since our journey began in 2015. The Vice President is a cool-headed gentleman who puts the interest of Nigeria above other narrow considerations. Vice President Osinbajo is an incredibly patient politician who demonstrates remarkable intellectual and mental energy in the discharge of his duties,” President Buhari was quoted to have said, celebrating Vice President Osinbajo on his 64th birthday celebration.

The presidential endorsement is enough as a testament to Vice President Osinbajo’s forthrightness, exemplifying why he has been a success thus far!

Presidential ticket is brewing

The APC is expected to zone the Presidential ticket to the South West. The contenders are Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Asiwaju believes that his legendary war chest and his hold on the party in Lagos and that of his friend Ganduje in Kano would be the key. In the worst case he could wangle 2 million votes in primaries from Lagos whether any one votes or not and another 4 million from Kano by hook or crook.

But his major worry is his former protege and now popular Vice President who many consider cerebral, ready for the job and capable of advancing Buhari’s legacy. Tinubu does not appear to have any solid criticism of Osinbajo.

However, his associates have been trying out a story that being a pastor he would favour Christians only. And that being a member of the Redeemed Church, he would favour only members of his church. They put out stories that his staff were mostly pastors or Christians. That was refuted by one of his Muslim aides who pointed out that his most senior appointees are actually Muslims, including the VP's own Chief of Staff.

As for Fayemi, he believes that he would have the support of strong people around the President especially Mamman Daura, about whom he tells his associates has promised him support. He also hopes to leverage on his position as Chair of the governors forum. His handlers also believe that if Bola Tinubu and Yemi Osinbajo eliminate each other he would be the beneficiary and would be presented at the appropriate time as the compromise candidate.

As for Yemi Osinbajo, he doesn’t seem to have a political structure, neither does he have the cash that a run will entail. He also seems to have annoyed many people around the President especially by sacking the former DG-SSS Lawal Daura, while he  was Acting President. Many also fear that he might be stricter than his boss. Fayemi on the other hand is not really popular, and has not shown an outstanding performance as governor. And by the way, he will be out of office by June next year in which case he might not be in a position to leverage the office of Governor.

Tinubu has political friends but is also not popular. He is widely regarded as extremely corrupt, compared often to Atiku. But the worst thing is that he has been canvassing for a Muslim-Muslim ticket. The only formula that can put him on the ticket. The party knows that such a ticket would be disastrous.

I think most people agree that what would tilt the scale is who President Buhari supports . And the old man seems to be keeping that close to his chest. If he says nothing as he usually does, it means that he is saying that the ticket should go to the highest bidder, this is what direct primaries may come down to. But the outcome he gets may neither please him nor enhance the electoral chances of his party. And if he lets the PDP succeed him, he should kiss a peaceful retirement good bye. Something tells me Bubu won't let that happen!
