Romance / ‘most Nigerian Men Are Now Afraid That Women Will Kill Them’ – New Study by Lautechgossip(m): 11:32am On Nov 30, 2017
In the wake of the unfortunate death of Bilyamin Bello, son of a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, there has been a somewhat surprising chatter about matricide.

In an ironic twist of Margaret Atwood’s quote, “men are afraid women will laugh at them; women are afraid men will kill them”, Nigerian men are now the ones displaying the fear of spousal violence. While men as victims too should be taken seriously enough, we should also resist attempts by people who want to propagate a spurious idea of gender violence by assessing issues with a false scale.

There is no statistical equivalence to the violence men and women suffer in domestic relationships. It is disingenuous to pretend that men are also frequent victims but whose pain is unfairly obscured by feminist sympathies.

The data suggest that at least one in three women has reported a case of domestic violence and as many as double that figure experience one form of domestic violence or the other. The most reliable and recent data is that of Lagos State that showed that in the first nine months of this year alone, 852 cases were reported. Of that figure, the men’s cases of domestic abuse were only 55 instances.

If we generalise with the figure, it means about 95 per cent of the time, women are the victims of various forms of domestic violence. Even if we adjust for varying factors such as ethnicity, religion, class, educational level, and so on, women will still be the bulk of the victims and men are the ones who carry out these acts of violence.

Bello’s death might have proved that any and every one can be a victim. What it does not change is that women are the more frequent victims.

Personally, I believe that much of the sensation around Bello’s death has been more of the twin interwoven factors: class and ethnicity, rather than genuine sympathies for the deceased. If the couple were not from a prominent family, they probably would not make front page news. Also, they are northerners.

In the patronising imagination of the southerners who dominate the media channels, the image of the northern woman must be that of one who is a perpetual victim of Islamist patriarchy; her veiled head symbolic of her equally veiled mind. The one woman that has (allegedly) diverged from this stereotypical script was instantly hailed as a revolutionary heroine by some febrile minds whose small minds turn severe issues to revanchist rhetoric like “battle of the sexes.”

One suspects that those two factors have made this incident compelling to the point that men feel vulnerable in a way they have never done before. If, therefore, men are now afraid that women too can kill them, then they will begin to understand the conditions under which many women have lived for long.

If men understand the fear of spousal abuse the way women have lived its reality for many years, then our society might finally have a much-needed enlightened debate around domestic violence and hopefully make some progress. Women have borne the brunt of the unevenness of power and which has predisposed them to domestic violence for so long their suffering is frequently downplayed, normalised, and even rationalised.

One can hardly go through three Yoruba films today without being assaulted with narratives that perpetuate violence and aggression against women. These stories are especially disturbing because their anti-women violence is hardly ever interrogated. Instead, women’s pain is represented as some kind of necessity and a self-denial that ultimately induces moral resolve or higher virtue. Whereas abuse is needless and oppressive. It diminishes people’s dignity.

Women themselves tend to accept abuse as inevitable because, really, they have few options. They are bracketed on all sides by their relative lack of economic empowerment, socio-cultural expectations, religion, and legal infrastructures that do not guarantee their rights. I have been part of women support group fora where I have been baffled by how women further victimise one another by telling other abuse victims to seek spiritual help when physically and emotionally abused by their spouses.

They tell the victims to pray so that God can change the hearts of their men. They advise them to watch War Room; to minimise one another and maximise their husband’s ego so that the manlier he feels, the less likely he would be violent. They teach one another to live with demeaning situations because, somehow, society has tied their ideas of personal virtue to being coupled. Thank God for other enlightened women who challenged these fellow women on their thinking. The fact that abuse has been ossified into social norms does not make it “normal.”

Men who languish in situations of domestic abuse do so largely because they are entrapped within our society’s outdated ideas of masculinity that thinks “real men” always have the brute physical force to “control” their women. Men who do not fit into these vacuous presumptions of male behaviour find themselves silenced by the social expectations that reserve aggression for only their gender.

To win the battle against domestic violence, we need to turn moments of public passion such as this into a productive one. We need to take domestic violence more seriously. Men, especially the ones with economic, physical, and political power who think they are insulated from domestic violence should understand that the campaign against domestic violence is not just a shrill cry by women advocates who want to wave the victim card for nothing. It has been a lived reality for women.

The problem is not the paucity of laws. Despite the few retrogressive religious laws in the penal code that allows men to beat women as a correct measure, Nigeria has enough in her books to fight domestic violence. Lagos State, for instance, has a model that is responsive to issues of domestic violence and which should be imitated by other states. The Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act of 2015 can go a long way to protect victims. There is a lot more to be done to make laws enforceable and effective – from training officials to handle issues better, to providing enough resources to prosecute the overwhelming number of cases.

However, domestic violence persists because there is a vast chasm between formal structures that purports to protect victims and the informal means of adjudication that treats these issues as “family matters.” People who should make an official report against their partners find themselves encumbered by cultural sentiments that re-victimise them. Ours is a society where serial wife-beaters are even elected lawmakers. How does a woman win against a system that gives an abusive spouse power to make laws that will ultimately translate to ensuring human rights and dignity?

Finally, a lot of problems can be made less knotty if, collectively, we relax some of our ideas about marriage. We need to tell men and women that no match was made in heaven and people who are unlucky to choose a wrong partner need not die in a ruinous union trying to prove what is not. We should re-evaluate our values and understand that it takes bravery to pick up what is left of one’s self-respect and walk rather than put up a perfect front for social media. Marriage is no ultimate achievement for anyone.

No man needs to prove his masculinity by tolerating a violent wife to “tame” her eventually. No woman should be blackmailed with the false notion that they have an intrinsic essence that can change a man; men are not growing babies who forever need mothering. People should be empowered to walk to save their lives and their sanity. Divorce should be no stigma; those who walk out of toxic relationships deserve to live a healthy life, and happily ever after too.

Phones / Globacom Shut Down In Ondo Over Non-payment Of Salary To Workers by Lautechgossip(m): 5:04pm On Aug 25, 2017
Subscribers of the Globacom mobile network in four local government areas of Ondo State have been unable to use the network for the past two weeks as the 33 stations in the areas have been shut down by the security men manning them.

The affected four local government areas were : Akoko North-East, Akoko North-West, Akoko South-East and Akoko South-West Local Governments.

The guards were said to have taken the action in protest against the telecommunication company following non-payment of their salaries for the past 11 months by the security outfit, Concord Security Limited, contracted by Glo to hire the guards.

Some of the 66 guards who spoke with DAILY POST on condition of anonymity on Friday lamented that the security company was owing them 11 months salary, and they could not cope doing the job again.

One of them said, “ We have to shut down the stations we are guarding because of non-payment of our salaries, we have contacted our employer, Concord Security Limited in Akure but our boss, Mr. Friday told us that Glo was owing him that is why he too is owing us.

“ We want to appeal to the management of Glo Telecommunicaton to pay our company so that they could pay us too. We are earning N10,000 as salary per month, you can see that that is too small for us but we are managing it, yet they are denying us the money, this is unfair”

The General Manager of Concord Security Company, who was identified as Mr. Friday admitted that the company was owing the security guards. He said he was owing the workers because Glo was owing him too, but explained that the matter has been resolved.

“ We are owing them, we are not denying that; it is due to the economic problem in the country. Our client, Globacom is owing us 16 months and we are able to pay the security up to 11 months. I have talked to them that it was not an intentional act for us to owe them because we are contractors. When our clients pay us, we pay our workers,” Friday explained .g

Education / 40 Nigerians To Depart For UK On Chevening Scholarship by Lautechgossip(m): 1:52pm On Aug 25, 2017
The British Government has awarded 40 Nigerians the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to study a wide range of master’s programmes in the United Kingdom between 2017 and 2018.

The recipients were selected from a pool of over 6,000 applications in Nigeria and more than 63,000 applications across the globe.

Speaking at a pre-departure reception held in Abuja yesterday, the British High Commissioner, Paul Arkwright, said the applicants who won the scholarships did incredibly well to have been among the less than 1 percent awardees.

While announcing the opening of the 2018/2019 application cycle, Arkwright said the British Government had been consistent in its award of the annual scholarship programme for the past 34 years; adding that the aim of the programme is to help young people of Nigerian origin make the difference that would transform the potentials of the country into economic and political gains for all citizens.

He maintained that as a requirement for selection, all applicants must pledge to return to their countries of origin at the end of their Scholarship programme and make the best use of the training, skills, and education that they pursued in the UK by ploughing that back in whatever you are going to do next in Nigeria for a minimum of two years.

Arkwright, while mentioning a few of the Alumni of the programme who have contributed to the development of Nigeria to include; veteran broadcasters John Momoh and Eugenia Abu; and the current Acting-Secretary to Government of the Federation, Habiba Lawal, said one of the great benefits they all admit to have enjoyed through the programme was the many great friendships and networks form across the globe they developed during their year of study in the UK.

He said: “Just over 6,000 people applied and we are awarding about 40 scholarships. So, you do the maths. Those of you who won the scholarships have done incredibly well.

“Some past Chevening scholars that have been speaking with me this evening told me about the benefits they gained through the programme.

“Just a few words for those of you who don’t know about the Chevening scholarship; it’s been running since 1983. It is a huge global network of about 48,000 people around the world.

“The thing I am most impressed with is that when I talk to Nigerian scholars, they say, ‘the thing I enjoyed most about the programme was the sense of camaraderie with Chevening scholars of other nations.’ I think that is a really important aspect of the programme.

“To learn from others not just to learn from what British education could do for you but to learn from the experiences of others across the world. That’s a wonderful thing.

“Nigeria has serious economic and socio-political problems but it is a country with massive potentials. If these potentials will be fully realized, then it is the young people of Nigeria origin who would make that difference.

“And what we are doing with the Chevening scholarships is to try to make that difference that it is really important that if you go on the Chevening scholarship that you have to come back to your country of origin and give back to your people what you learnt.

“So, make the best use of your training, the skill, the education that you will be pursuing in the UK and plough that back in whatever you are going to do next in Nigeria. I think that is incredibly important. So, this is a celebration.”

Speaking on behalf of the Alumni of the Chevening Scholarship present at the occasion, the Acting SGF, Habiba Lawal said: “I congratulate all the awardees here tonight. I was on board 20 years ago. I wish to thank the UK government for this effort and to reiterate the fact that it is very opportunities one could get in life.

“For me, I would say it is one of the things that took me from where I was (the University system) to the where I am today as Acting SGF. It has greatly influenced the way I work. It has also improved my competences, my skills, and abilities.

“I believe this opportunity for those going on board now is to be utilized and made useful for Nigeria. When you come back and contribute to the work that is been done, that is when Nigeria must have gained and I am sure the purpose for which the scholarship is provided is been achieved.”

On his part, one of the awardees, Mohammed Abba-aji, a medical doctor with the Nigerian Air Force, said that the programme would transform his life and empower his capability to affect the society better.

Education / JAMB: University Of Ibadan Rejects 120 Cut-off Mark by Lautechgossip(m): 8:26am On Aug 25, 2017
The University of Ibadan in Oyo State has rejected the decision of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to peg admission cut-off mark at 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education.

In a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, on the issue and released by his Media Assistant, Sunday Saanu, yesterday, the University stated that it would never admit any candidate that scored 120 in the UTME.

“It should worry us as patriots that candidates who scored just 30 per cent in the UTME can be admitted into some of our universities. Yet, we complain of poor quality of our graduates.

“You can hardly build something on nothing. The consolation here is that since JAMB started conducting this qualifying exam in 1978, UI has never admitted any candidate who scored less than 200 marks out of the maximum 400 marks.

“This translates to a minimum of 50 per cent. This remains our position as an institution aspiring to be world-class. Reality is that only about four other universities in the country have such high standard.

“To that extent, apart from being the oldest, we are an elite university in the country at least judging by the quality of our intakes,’’ the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said the pegging of JAMB cut-off marks at 120 for admission into universities, which it described as a “sad policy decision,” was in tandem “with the dream of the present government to destroy public universities in the country.”

It maintained that they would not lower admission standards in their respective varsities, adding that the decision would add no value to the nation’s university system.

Education / Afe Babalola Rejects 120 Cut-off Mark For Nigerian Universities by Lautechgossip(m): 8:06am On Aug 24, 2017
Founder of the Afe Babalola University Ado Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), on Wednesday kicked against the 120 cut-off mark for admission into universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education for the 2017/2018 academic session.

He described the reduction as violence to the university system and a major setback to quality education in the country.

Recall that that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board had on announced on Tuesday the reduction of cut-off marks for candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities to 120 and 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education in the country.

But Babalola, in a statement, said he was worried that the decision was taken without due consideration for its implication on the quality of education in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

“What is the whole essence of reducing cut-off marks for admission to as low as 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education? Will such an action enhance or reduce the quality of education?

“Will it give international recognition to the degrees awarded by the Nigerian universities which, in any case, are already being questioned? Is the reduction a deliberate ploy to make things worse?” Babalola quizzed.

He, therefore, called for an urgent education summit which he suggested should be attended by stakeholders of higher education institutions to address the problems.

The statement read, “Are we now saying there will be no uniform standards in our tertiary education in this country? Is the government or its agencies encouraging double or multiple standards?

“I do hope that those behind this reduction are aware that even candidates who pass the UTME at 180 and above now find it difficult and tasking to get admission into Nigerian universities because there are more qualified candidates than the spaces available and because of the paucity of facilities in the existing universities.

“It must be appreciated that even the former 180 cut-off mark is less than 50 per cent of the total JAMB marks. As I said earlier, a minimum of 50 per cent was regarded and acknowledged as pass mark in elementary schools in those days and now JAMB is recommending 120, a mere 30 per cent of the total score of 400.”

But the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has insisted that pegging the minimum cut-off benchmark for admission at 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, will improve access to education.

Health / LAUTECH Doctors Demand Reversal Of Salary Cut by Lautechgossip(m): 1:17pm On Jul 25, 2017
Medical doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH), have lamented the “unlawful and inconsiderate” cut of their salaries by the state government.

The medical doctors, under the auspices of Association of Resident Doctors, LAUTECH-ARD, also bemoaned the non-provision of necessary equipment, which was affecting the training of medical students in the institution.

In a statement jointly signed by the President, Dr Sebastine Oiwoh and the General Secretary, Dr Ayobami Alabi, they alleged that all efforts by the Association to resolve those problems met a brick wall.

They said the Association had vehemently rejected the payment of percentage salary, since the payment of January 2016 salary was paid in August 2016.

“We have repeatedly written letters, paid visits and made appeal to all that matter in Oyo state government. Attempts at meeting with the state Governor was met with brick wall,” the statement read in part.

The Association also demanded for the immediate payment of their salaries and arrears with the Paris Club Fund released to the state.

“We are owed 11 months salary right now. We demand immediate reversal alongside payment of the arrears of salaries being owed with the Paris Fund release.

“We insist being paid what is obtainable in federal teaching hospital as it is written in the edict of the hospital as anything contrary totally negates the contract of our employment,” they insisted.

The doctors who alleged that projects are not being implemented in the hospital, said approved equipment are yet to be delivered as well as not installed.

“This sad experience typifies the sheer neglect of the populace that translates into poor health indices in the nation. This ranges from insufficient budgetary allocation for health to non implementation of allocated funds for actualisation of the zenith of enviable health care delivery within the hospital and the state,” the statement added.

NYSC / 7 Things All 2017 Batch A Stream II Should Expect On The 21st Of July by Lautechgossip(m): 11:10am On Jul 20, 2017
The National Youth Service Corps management finally released the NYSC 2017 Batch A Stream II orientation course date and since the release, most Prospective Corp Members have been so happy while others are also happy.

The printing of Call Up letter will commence on 21st of July 2017 for NYSC 2017 Batch A Stream II. Meaning on Friday 21st of this July (tomorrow), Stream II Prospective Corp Members will be aware of their state of deployment. Each and every PCM will get to know the state they are going to obey the clarion call.

7 Things All 2017 Batch A Stream II Should Expect On The 21st Of July is an article to prepare your mind for what would happen tomorrow as you print your call up letters.

If you like, you should call this predicting the future. You will still be very right.

Important Notice: Once you are print your call up letter and you see your state of deployment, do not search for the state on google especially if you are posted to the North.

Somebody want to know why? Okay here is a true life experience.

“I was posted to Plateau for my NYSC service in 2016 Batch A Stream II after all my attempts to work it to South West was to no avail. When I got my call up letter, I rushed and search for Plateau State on google. The first and second page of Google was filled with Bombing, religious Crises, killing of Corpers and so many bad news. (Although they all happened but that was in the past).

I was so scared that all my plan was to redeploy immediately I get to camp. It was the other way round and now am in love with the state.”

So if you look up any state on google, you are on your own.

Let’s go to the main article. Here are 7 Major Things All 2017 Batch A Stream II Should Expect On The 21st Of July, 2017

1.Sleepless Night
Most NYSC 2017 Batch A Stream II PCM will not be able to sleep on Thursday night waiting for NYSC portal to be open by 12am. In fact, some will not be able to eat that night all in the name of waiting for 12am.

My advice is, why give yourself stress. You have been posted to a state. Either you print by 12am or by next morning, it will not change anything. So please, eat and sleep.

2. Singing and Dancing in Happiness.
Some PCMs will be so happy tomorrow because they would be posted to their place of choice. Especially people posted to Lagos or Abuja.

My advice is that you should take that as an opportunity to get connections and not be carried away by Lagos enjoyment.

3. Sadness and Tears
While some are dancing for their state of deployment, some, especially girls will be crying for being posted to the North. I don’t know their issue with the Northern Part or Nigeria. They will cry and refuse to eat.

I have see a beautiful adult lady crying because she was posted to Plateau.

My advice is that, you do not need to cry. Do not be afraid. The whole of North is not filled with suicide bombers or Boko Haram.

There are no bad states. You just need to utilise it. You will even enjoy electricity, cheap food stuffs, low transport fare and also be surprise that North is not exactly how some people are painting it.

4. Redeployment on point
The first thing that some people will be looking for is how to redeploy. Imagine someone who want to redeploy without going to orientation camp. That’s how serious and in a hurry some people can go.

My advice Is that, you should redeploy if you wish to. But remember how cool it will be to experience another culture.

5. Anger, Fights and Dissapointment
Wait… did I say fight? I don’t mean physical fight. I mean the kind of anger and fight you get when you paid #50k to someone to help you process your posting to Lagos and in your call up letter you see Jigawa or Bornu. Chaii…. Yawa don burst!

My advice is that you should try to collect your money back or just accept it as fate. What do you expect me to advice you if not to get back your money or just take heart.

6. Heart break
My definition of heart break in this content is when you and your lover plan to stay close and NYSC post one to Lagos and the other Jigawa.

Special determination is needed to keep the groove going.

7. Extreme Supervision
This is funny, but it happens. You borrow money to buy NYSC kits since stream I went to camp thinking you would follow stream I and till now you have not paid back the money. My friend, somebody is watching you.

Or you owe house rent and you want to outsmart the Care taker after you discover you have been posted to a far place. My Dear, your care taker is aware of the date.my list

My list of 7 Things All 2017 Batch A Stream II Should Expect On The 21st of July may be funny but they are what will surely happen. Pay attention and you will see that this is not a fiction.

Any question from PCMs, any addition from serving Corp Members and any contribution by Ex-Corp members is allowed.

Politics / We’ll Make Osun Ungovernable For You! Retirees Warn Aregbesola by Lautechgossip(m): 10:29am On Jul 20, 2017
Retirees under the aegis of 2011/2012 Pensioners Forum in Osun State, yesterday again embarked on a peaceful protest at the state secretariat, Osogbo to denounce what they termed “wicked and inhuman attitude” of Governor Rauf Aregbesola over alleged deliberate refusal to pay their one-year pension arrears.

As early as 8.00am, the pensioners had converged on the frontage of the State Secretariat complex, taking over the roundabout in front of the main gate of the secretariat, thus preventing civil servants and other top government functionaries from entering their offices.

The protesters, chanting anti government songs and displaying placards, with various inscriptions vowed to make the state ungovernable should Aregbesola failed to pay their outstanding pensions and allowances from second tranche of Paris loan refund, which was released to the state government on Monday.

Speaking with newsmen during the protest, which halted vehicular movement from the Owode end of Gbongan-Ibadan expressway, the chairman of 2011/2012 Forum of Pensioners in Osun State, Comrade Omoniyi Ilesanmi said: “We are the people who worked diligently after the creation of Osun State. Aregbesola should use the N6.3billion Paris loan refund he just got to pay us our pension and allowance, otherwise he would find this state ungovernable.”

Health / How To Stop Mosquitoes And Other Insects From Feeding From You by Lautechgossip(m): 5:51pm On Jul 01, 2017
It’s that time of the year again when mosquitoes and other insects are available all around us in droves spreading diseases. You should be planning to prevent this from happening by making sure they don’t feast on you. The best way to do this is to understand mosquitoes and know the dos and don’ts that can help repel them and prevent you from getting malaria.

1. Dos: Resist The Urge To Scratch When Bitten By A Mosquito

Scratching the area you were Bitten will only make things worse since doing so will add more to the inflammation. A new study conducted at Temple University suggests that the urge to scratch is subconscious and a way in which our brains conspire against us.

The researchers rubbed an itch-inducing plant on the arms of 10 people with chronic itch or itching that has lasted for more than 6 weeks and 10 healthy people as a contrast. The brain’s of the participants were then scanned when they were allowed to scratch the itch. Both groups showed heightened activity in the reward centers of the brain (the areas that basically encourage us to keep doing what we’re doing) indicating a conspiracy. The conclusion was that it is difficult to ignore those impulses which is why you find it difficult to leave an insect bite alone.

While you may find the urge to scratch irresistible, stay strong. You can instead put some ice on the bite to help reduce the inflammation and the urge to scratch the itch.

2. Dos: Allow Your Heart Breath

Mosquitoes use carbon dioxide (CO2) as a guide when they’re searching and identifying potential food targets. The minute your heart rate goes up and your body produces more carbon dioxide, more insects will likely bite you. Exercises, consuming alcohol and eating spicy foods are among the things that can increase your metabolism and your carbon dioxide production which mosquitoes especially find irresistible.

3. Don’ts: Eating Certain Foods or supplements

Certain foods such as bananas, garlic, or supplements that contain B vitamins can repel mosquitoes but they won’t do much good on the long run.

4. Dos: Buy Clothes With Tight Weaves

Mosquitoes find it hard to penetrate clothing that are made up of tight weaves. Synthetic fibers that are made as athletic apparels are particularly useful when you’re outdoors and in an area where there would be lots of insects. Cotton and linen however don’t give much protection against them. Outfits that offer protection from the sun will surely have weaves tight enough to block insect bites. will also have a tight enough weave to block bites.

5. Dos: Wear Light Colours

Mosquitoes tend to use their vision to look for good during the daytime when there is light and since they tend to fly close to the ground, they will be on the lookout to find targets that contrast with the horizon. This makes light colours less attractive to them and dark colours more attractive.

6. Dos: Blow Them Away

Any breeze that blows above the speed of 1 mile per hour is capable of stopping mosquitoes from flying. All you need to do is to turn up your fan or the air conditioning system this season and you will have a suitable deterrent. Remember to keep the flow of air towards the lower part of your body because mosquitoes tend to fly very close to the ground as a way of avoiding wind. Directing the fan and airflow towards your legs will stop them from biting you.

7. Don’ts: Avoid Spending Money On Coils

Mosquito coils, citronella candles and other oils are natural insect repellants, but are only effective if their smoke or scent are able to get between you and the insects. If you’re lighting coils that are a few feet off the ground, they will do very little to keep the insects at bay as chances are they won’t be effective.

Sports / Video: Barcelona Legend Ronaldinho Destroys Man Utd Legend With Super Skills by Lautechgossip(m): 5:33pm On Jul 01, 2017
It may have ended up a 3-1 victory for Manchester United in a charity match between Red Devils legends and a Barcelona legends squad on Friday, but Ronaldinho was the star of the show.

The match, played at Barca’s Camp Nou, featured the likes of Rivaldo, Edgar Davids, Dwight Yorke and Karel Poborsky, but it was the 37-year-old former Brazil superstar who grabbed the spotlight.

In typical fashion, Ronaldinho’s dazzling array of tricks and flicks were the talking points of the contest, including a nutmeg through Jesper Blomqvist’s legs that caused the Swede to fall to the pitch.

The move made the crowd buzz, but even current United star Anthony Martial felt the need to take to social media to register his appreciation.

Despite being on the wrong end of Ronaldinho’s trickery, Blomqvist’s day wasn’t a complete embarrassment as the Swede was among the goalscorers in the United triumph. Joining Blomqvist on the Red Devils’ scoresheet were Yorke and Poborsky, while Frederic Dehu scored the lone Barca goal.

While Ronaldinho did not get a goal for himself, he was still named Man of the Match. The two sides will meet again at Old Trafford in September.

Sports / Fifa 18 Release Date Confirmed With Cristiano Ronaldo As Cover Star by Lautechgossip(m): 2:35pm On Jun 06, 2017
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been named Fifa’s cover star for the first time in his career.

The Portuguese breaks Lionel Messi’s run as the poster boy for the world’s biggest-selling football video game, with the Barcelona rival making the cover in four of the past five years.

Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus adorned the Fifa 17 cover, the most recent edition currently on sale in which Ronaldo is the highest-rating player with 94 compared to Messi’s 93.

The announcement comes just days after Ronaldo scored two goals to help Real Madrid become the first team to retain the Champions League trophy since the competition’s revamping in 1992.

“It is a real pleasure to be on the cover of FIFA 18. It’s a great feeling and I am grateful to have been chosen,” Ronaldo said in a statement.

Fifa 18 will be released on September 29 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Ronaldo becomes the third player to grace the cover of Fifa and Pro Evolution Soccer having been front and centre for the 2008, 2012 and 2013 editions of Konami’s rival series.

Thierry Henry was also picked for both Fifa and PES before Messi for Konami’s choice in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Health / Walking Just 25 Minutes Daily Boosts Brain Function by Lautechgossip(m): 9:23am On May 31, 2017
Just 25 minutes of walking a day could stave off the debilitating effects of dementia, a new study claims.

Researchers in Canada monitored a group of 38 adults with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), the second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s.

They found that those who took a few brisk walks a week – amounting to three hours in total – experienced an improvement in brain function.

After six months, they had improved reaction times and other signs of improved brain function, the Canadian team reports in British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The team said their research also suggests regular brisk walks could reduce one’s risk of developing VCI in the first place.

The brain is a highly metabolic organ and to keep it healthy, it requires good blood flow to deliver the necessary nutrients and oxygen to its tissues.

VCI refers to mildly impaired thinking or more advanced dementia that’s due to the same kinds of blood vessel damage seen with heart disease elsewhere in the body.

Aerobic exercise may also benefit the brain by increasing growth factors, which are substances made by the body that promote cell growth, differentiation and survival, she said.

“It is well established that regular aerobic exercise improves cardiovascular health and cerebrovascular health,” the study’s senior author Teresa Liu-Ambrose said.

“More specifically, it reduces one’s risk of developing chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes (type II), and high cholesterol.

“These chronic conditions have a negative impact on the brain – likely through compromised blood flow to the brain.” Liu-Ambrose is a researcher with the Aging, Mobility, and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

She and a research team randomly assigned 38 older adults with mild VCI to one of two groups.

One group followed an aerobic training program consisting of three one-hour walking classes each week for six months, while the other group continued with their usual care.

Politics / LAUTECH CMD Reveals Real Cause Of Senator Adeleke’s Death by Lautechgossip(m): 8:07am On May 16, 2017
The Chief Medical Director, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Prof Akeem Lasisi has revealed the real cause of the death of the Senator representing Osun-West senatorial district, Chief Isiaka Adeleke.

According to Lasisi, Adeleke died of an overdose of banned injections.

Testifying before a coroner, Mr Olusegun Ayilara, in Osogbo, on Monday, Lasisi, who spoke from the witness box, said the Chief Medical Director of Biket Hospital, Osogbo, Dr Adebisi Adenle, called him on the telephone on April 23 to tell him that Adeleke had died.

Lasisi, who said he saw Adeleke’s corpse on a table at LAUTECH’s morgue, added that a pathologist, one Dr Solaja, two resident doctors, who are also pathologists, the Officer in Charge of Homicide, Osun State Police Command, Divisional Police Officer, Dugbe Police Station, Osogbo, and the Consultant Pathologist, LAUTECH, were all present when an autopsy was carried out on Adeleke.

Lasisi said the aide informed him that the person, who treated Adeleke was not a doctor but could not say if he was a nurse.

The CMD stated that he, however, failed to ask for the name of the person who treated Adeleke but he wanted to know what was administered and the competence of the person that administered the drugs.

He said among the injections given to Adeleke was Analgin, which he said was outlawed when the late Prof Dora Akunyili was the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

He said, “I saw the corpse. Before any process of examination of any diagnosis in medicine, there is what we call history before examination. So, we asked for the person who knew the conditions surrounding the death of the senator.

“So, the family pointed to one of the aides and the aide said he (Adeleke) was active the previous day and he came at midnight and started complaining of leg pain. So, they sent for somebody who came to give him injections.

“I asked clearly the medical status of the person that administered the injections. I asked, ‘Is the person a doctor?’ but he said no. ‘Is he a nurse’?, he said he didn’t know but the person was a face they were used to.

“He mentioned various injections, so at that point I asked him if could lay his hands on the empty ampoules of the injections. The family members went home to get them. The injections were five per cent dextrose. We saw empty sachets; it was like a fluid and with it, we saw an intravenous fluid-giving set and scalp vein needle. We saw that empty. We saw two ampoules of Analgin, four ampoules of valium (diazepam) – 10ml each making 40 milligrammes, one ampoule of pentazocine, one ampoule of gentamicin and two ampoules of hydrocortisone.

“All of these were empty and his aide said these were what he was given. He also added that after he had been given, he (Adeleke) called him that he doesn’t want to entertain any visitor and he went to sleep. He (the aide) said he later went back to check him and saw that the senator’s eyes were wide open but he wasn’t breathing.”

The CMD added that diazepam ‘sedates and tranquilises when given in moderate dosage’ but said it could knock off reflexes if given in the type of dosage Adeleke was given and could eventually lead to death.

He stated that if the injection would be given intravenously at all, it should be given at a facility where the patient could be resuscitated with artificial oxygen in case his breathing stopped.

“Analgin has been outlawed since the days of Dora Akunyili in NAFDAC. So, I don’t know where they got it from. They were given in excess dosage,” he said.

Also the Osun State Deputy Governor, Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori, in her testimony before the coroner, said Adeleke hesitated before he ate three spoonfuls of rice at a funeral ceremony in Osun State, a day before he died.

Webmasters / Federal Government Set To Open Website, Youtube For Easy Access To Information by Lautechgossip(m): 7:10am On May 16, 2017
The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to open a website and reactivate its YouTube account, so as to provide Nigerians quick and easy access to authentic information on its activities.

This was made known by the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital and New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, on Monday.

Ogunlesi stated that the YouTube account would be reactivated very soon, while the website would be ready by the end of June.

“We have a YouTube account; it has not been active but one of the things we are working on over the next few weeks is to reactivate the page and upload our videos.

“Meanwhile, our videos go to twitter and Facebook but after reactivation, we are going to make sure all those videos go on to our YouTube.

“On the website, it will be a one stop shop, where people can have free access to authentic information about Federal Government’s pronouncements, activities, policies and programmes.

“However, we have since set up official Federal Government social media platforms on twitter, Facebook and Nairaland; we have an official Facebook account, facebook.com/asovilla.

“We put up information regularly and speedily on those platforms; that is our job and we will continue to do more.

“We have Ministry of Health, the Centre for Disease Control, the EFCC, NDDC and others doing a lot of fantastic jobs and giving out authentic information on their social media platforms”, he said.

This is going to be a welcome development as fake news has been circulating on social media and in turn damaging the integrity of the Federal Government.

Education / JAMB To Move UTME To Ilorin Over LAUTECH Students’ Protest by Lautechgossip(m): 6:32am On May 16, 2017
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Monday said it will move candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, scheduled to write their examination at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH in Ogbomoso, to Ilorin, due to students’ protest.

UTME candidates scheduled to use the LAUTECH campus Computer Based Test (CBT) centre were on Monday prevented from gaining entrance inside the premises by protesting students of the institution.

The students had mobilised themselves as early as 6.00 a.m. for the protest, and stationed themselves in teams across all entrances into the institution.

Reacting, JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin disclosed that the board was concluding arrangements to reschedule the exams for the affected candidates at Ilorin.

“We will reschedule them. Even though it’s not our problem, it’s the school’s problem, but they are our candidates.

There is no private centre in Ogbomosho and the closest centre to Ogbomosho is Ilorin”, he told Premium Times.

“This disruption happened today and we need to do some technical arrangements first.

“So, no date has been fixed yet. But we are going to write the exams in Ilorin except if LAUTECH resolves the students unrest”, he added.

Meanwhile, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, says no fewer than 440,000 candidates have sat for the 2017 UTME within two days across the country.

Oloyede told newsmen in Abuja on Monday that the exams would end in Bauchi, Abia, Niger states and some other states on May 15 while the UTME would continue in Kebbi state, Lagos state, Oyo and some other states.

Education / LAUTECH: Oyo Assembly Summons VC, Commissioner Over 7 Months Salary Arrears by Lautechgossip(m): 5:49pm On May 09, 2017
Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday summoned the Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso Professor Sulaiman Adeniyi Gbadegesin and the state Commissioner for Education Professor Adeniyi Olowofela to appeal before it over the lingering crisis that has bedevil the institution in the last couple of years due to non-payment of workers salaries.

This was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance titled “Urgent need to avert another indefinite industrial action at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso” moved by Honourable Olawumi Oladeji (Ogbomoso North).

Oladeji argued that “prior to the suspension of the strike action by the unions in the university, a MOU was signed with the management on behalf of the governing council but now the content and the spirit of the agreement has been breached.

“Accumulation of arrears of unpaid salaries still continued unsettled, staff of the university now endure hardship and various financial embarrassments due to non-payment of salaries I.e.7 1/2 months of arrears.

She declared that the staff unions in the university is planning to embark on an indefinite strike action “if urgent intervention is not taken by the two owner states to rescue the situation whereby students of the university would engage themselves in aimless wandering and criminal activities because of idle hands is the devils workshop”.

She then “urged the house to call on the technical committee to hasten up their assignment and submit their report without further delay.

DAILY POST however gathered that the unions in the university have embarked on indefinite strike.

Other members including Hon. Gbenga Oyekola (Atiba) and Hon. Olusegun Olaleye (Ibadan North 11) urged the two states to as a matter of urgency ensure prompt payment of the staff in the institution make life more better for both students and workers in the institution.

The Speaker of the assembly, Hon. Michael Adeyemo then ordered the invitation of the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology and LAUTECH VC to appear before the committee on Education, Science and Technology with a view of making clarifications on the actual indebtness of the two owner states and suggest possible means of getting out of the woods.

Adeyemo urged the Oyo and Osun state governments for posterity sake to take actions on payment of outstanding salaries of LAUTECH staff.

He also asked the committee on Education, Science and Technology to meet the state commissioner for Education, Science and Technology as soon as possible with a view to meet the state governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi to know the actual debt Oyo State is contributing in the payment of the staff.

NYSC / 5 Things You Can Engage In During Your Service Year by Lautechgossip(m): 4:16am On May 09, 2017
The National youth service year is a period of selfless service to your “fatherland”. It was founded with the aim to inculcate in Nigerian youths the spirit of selfless service to the community and promote oneness and brotherhood of all Nigerians irrespective of their ethnic group, cultural or social background.

This period as it is may be quite “boring”. You might even see it as time wasting if you don’t probably engage yourself in profitable and measurable things.

Here are little tips of what you can engage in during service year such that it will be fun filled and interesting.

Go through this piece and thank me later!!

1. Acquire Vocational Skills:
The service year is a period where you can be a boss of your own and be self-employed. Gains skills like fashion designing, catering, cosmetology and much more depending on whatever you are interested in. Enroll for Skill Acquisition And Entrepreneurial Development (SAED) programs.

2. Get Professional Certification :
You don’t need to depend on your BSc or HND certificate only. The workplace is changing drastically. “You need to give them what they want before you can get whatever you need”. Get an affordable and accessible platform to run professional courses so you can be employable at the end of your service year. QUALIFY can give you all it take to get Qualified for any job position you are seeking.

3. Engage In Retail Businesses:
During the period when you are serving your fatherland, you can as well serve yourself by engaging yourself in a small business that will at least fetch you income rather than depending on the allowance from the federal government or state.

4. Get A Place Of Secondary Assignment :
Asides from your place of primary assignment (PPA), you can devote yourself to other activities, you can get a place of secondary assignment where you seek a part time job or work during the weekend.

5. Become a WhistleBlower:
The Federal Ministry of Finance (FMF) whistleblowing programme is designed to encourage anyone with information about a violation of financial regulations, mismanagement of public funds and assets, financial malpractice, fraud, and theft to report it. As awkward as it may seem, a youth corp member could be a perfect whistleblower. If you notice any financial dealings at your PPA or anywhere around you, all you need do is to head over to the FMF-Whistleblowing online portal to submit your tip. A Whistleblower is entitled to anywhere between 2.5%-5.0% of the amount recovered. The best part is, every whistleblower is entitled to protection; no one will know you submitted the tip! That looks like a lucrative business isn’t it? You don’t even need a capital!

I hope you can find this piece helpful, as the saying goes, “ An Idle Hand is The Devil’s workshop”.

Here is wishing you a great service year experience.

Education / We Sleep In Darkness, Attend Classes Without Bathing – UI Students by Lautechgossip(m): 7:27pm On Mar 27, 2017
Students of the University of Ibadan have revealed that since members of the non academic staff of the university began their strike, they have been living in difficult conditions on campus, as sources of water and electricity have been switched off by the striking staff, The Punch reports.

Academic and administrative activities at the university was halted on March 20, 2017, when the staff declared indefinite strike because of what the union described as “illegal deductions of pension money from their salaries.”

Aside the pension deduction issue, the workers are also asking for unpaid promotion arrears, shortfall in salary payment, and better welfare for staff, among other issues.

Some of the students who spoke with our correspondent on Monday said there was no water and electricity in the hostels and in all the classrooms.

“Each time there is crisis between the school administration and the staff, the students are always at the receiving end,” said Kayode Onifade, a 300 level student of the Faculty of Arts.

“Our lecturers now combine their work with that of non academic staff because they get the keys to open the classrooms for lectures to hold and lock them after.

“In the hostel, we sleep in darkness.

Many of us attend classes without taking our bath because there is no water. Both parties must reach an agreement for the sake of the students. The living condition is terrible,” added Onifade.

Since the strike began a week ago, gates to the institution have been locked, while lectures only resumed today (Monday).

Efforts to speak with the chairman of the institution’s branch of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Wale Akinremi, by our correspondent proved abortive; as he refused to answer his mobile telephone.

The institution’s Director of Public Communication, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo, told our correspondent that efforts were being made by both parties to resolve the crisis.
