Webmasters / Re: Is Your Website 2.0? by mambenanje(m): 8:55pm On Jul 08, 2008
@yawa

- it should be a community driven website where the content comes mainly from the users "a la " twitter.com twine.com facebook.com wink.com , etc
Webmasters / Re: Let's Learn Something 5: Flash Abuse by mambenanje(m): 8:44pm On Jul 08, 2008
@yawa
I think the main advantage of doing it in the flash swf file itself is to solve the disadvantage of having two differnt banners and ,
so if you do some php or server side logic in the banner you include to test and pass in the variables as "flash vars" to the shock wave file. whenever you load the banner, it will know what to do either to animate it or to show just the end of the animation (last frame ) wink
good post yawa, am amazed a girl is writing this much kudos
Webmasters / The Web Development Process | How Do You Build Your Web Applications For Clients by mambenanje(m): 2:02pm On Jul 08, 2008
I posted a topic about web design process yesterday now I want to talk about web development.
Personally I want to stress on UML (Unified Modeling Language) , which I use to engineer the whole working of the application in terms of user cas models, requirement model , test model, and class model [ incase of OOP ].
This is no joke with some UML tools like microsoft Visio or Enterprise Architect 2.0 you can just draw functions and their required actions then the software writes the codes for you.
Ok enough of the marketing of UML and the rest
when i have a client project, and we have all the requirements, our designer starts the design works, and our database guys starts the databasee works, while I work on the architecture. We employ MVC design pattern where the database has nothing to do with the html pages. there is always a function that communicates between the two so that if we change the database anytime the html pages wont change more information about MVC and UML can be found on these links

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Modeling_Language

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model-view-controller

i dont know how you do your own but I would love to learn. Tunde , yawa I need some help here

Webmasters / The Web Design Process | How Do You Design Your Client Websites ? by mambenanje(m): 9:21pm On Jul 07, 2008
I would like to know how webmasters take a project from the requirements to the hosting and presentation to the client. I for one, I start with a pencil and paper, I draw what will be the most appropriate look of the site. I do so by visiting other sites that are already online with similar concept. after drawing the site, I open up fireworks and do the graphics representation of the page.
After all that I can just open dreamweaver, starts some css and html, cutting pictures, saving, refreshing the page and there you go the design is out. I then go on to yahoo messenger chat with some pals.
After that I get the content and duplicate the pages and then see how to fit in the content on everypage.
finally register the domain and hosting, off to host it.
My process my not be the best and it can be better. can you please post your own so we can all learn . Remember we are talking only about designing a simple website like www.damwo.org which i just did

Webmasters / Re: Small Challenge On Html And Css by mambenanje(m): 11:08am On Jul 05, 2008
hey webdezzi
nice like www.bynigerians.com I was still working with some partners to setup something like that for cameroon and I have just seen this. its a wonderfull idea
benefits:
- more nigerians will be aware of web standards
- more nigerian talents will get a means to expose themselves

overall such a competition will help the web industry in nigeria grow. and the bynigerian site itself is a very good example [ very nice and explicit design]

Webmasters / Re: Demo Review, Anyone? by mambenanje(m): 8:15pm On Jul 02, 2008
well I have 1 out of 20
and you have 0 out of 20 and you are better than me wink
I adviced you to take the zend certification, those certifications help you learn soo many things. And from your post here those things you dont yet know.
we are here to help each other, so I am helping you with my small advice. But all you can do is abuse me, just go thru all the posts and comments I have been doing if I have insulted any person.
I always give my point of view and I always take everybody's point of view and add mine or substract. Well I think arguing with you makes me more like you so I should stop this arguments with you and concentrate on stuff from yawa and tunde
Webmasters / Re: Demo Review, Anyone? by mambenanje(m): 3:52pm On Jul 02, 2008
Afam
you keep pointing and talking about that post: ARE YOU ANGRY THAT I HATE SCAMMERS ?? maybe you are a scammer ooh man no deh know am sorry if you are one abeg forgive me for posting against scammers.
Well you realy have some problems Afam, and I dont think I have a solution for you.
If you dont want negative comments, why do you post stuff here and ask for critics. Just post it and say please give me positive feedback and appraisals.
Stop knowing everything because no one knows everything but God
I ASKED YOU IF YOU HAVE ANY CERTIFICATE TO PROOF YOUR SKILLS YOU DIDNT SHOW ANY but all you can do is tell me how I posted about firefox and scammers.
read the post again and you will see that most guys nairalanders from Europe and USA, were not against my idea only those in Africa were
anyway enough of talking let me go back to work. nice relief I had
Webmasters / Re: Demo Review, Anyone? by mambenanje(m): 10:23am On Jul 02, 2008
well i wonder if armed robbers are only found in Cameroon, but Afam all I was doing was advicing you not to announce what you make from a project because you might be attracting theives. You should atleast thank me for that, yet all you do is attack wink as usual.
Well I could be one of those kids making that much but its not worth announcing it, it has to stay private
Webmasters / Re: Let's Learn Something 4 - Setting Div Heights In Css by mambenanje(m): 10:49pm On Jul 01, 2008
nice yawa
I have been having that problem when I do a my design with no real content I always want to make it big so I set a height but when I have dynamic data I always change the height to auto
so during css and html design work I do

height: 600px;

and during programming and dynamic content I do

height: auto;

it was a mad fix for me wink but recently my2cent toldme of min-height and you have just comfirmed now I wont have to be switching the css
thanks
Webmasters / Re: Demo Review, Anyone? by mambenanje(m): 10:40pm On Jul 01, 2008
Congratulations Afam, I am happy the contract was a success, but dont you think you are attracting armed robbers by telling everyone how much you earn from that project. make pride no cause problems ooh
Webmasters / Re: Demo Review, Anyone? by mambenanje(m): 11:30am On Jul 01, 2008
hey guys
maybe its because its a demo thats why its that ugly lets pray he gets the contract and we might see something better or horrible it depends wink
but man the colors man, bright green, dark green, bright blue, and dark blue. man whatever happened to the color theory. I personally think demos are suppose to give the client a good design and no functionality just to wet his appetite. well my own way
Webmasters / Re: Beyond Static Websites ! So Whats The Big Deal ? by mambenanje(m): 1:00pm On Jun 29, 2008
there is just no way one can learn or share knowledge in here because there are Gods here that seem to know everything and seem to understand every statement more than every other being.
We are Africans, and we have this in our blood, but it will change with time i guess
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 12:48pm On Jun 29, 2008
@Afam
your point of view about me is just what you see in this forum, and I don't blame you for its your point of view, and it wont change the fact that my clients will still give me projects because I don't give them same template i give to a former client wink.

Now like you said to Tunde, ARE CERTIFICATES SUPPOSE TO BE HIDDEN, man you have no qualifications but you talk more than everyone here.
I wonder what makes you think you know that much while you don't have any backings ??
next time when guys are talking about web development pleasee listen because you will be compensiating for what you don't know because you didnt take any former education.
No wonder you write all these things, now I see . hey you also told Tunde "its not that you don't like showing it, they are not just there ",
so i say to you its not that you don't want me to shut up, man there is no certificate or degree regarding computer science or web development
I wont answer again, i am satisfied and next time don't talk too much till you can show what certifies your skills or proof your competence.
I beg find your place sit down or write the zend exam so you can back your arrogance
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 10:32pm On Jun 28, 2008
hahaha cheesy
I wont stop laughing,
@Afam you are giving me music while I am coding www.afrikeo.com wink
myopic or not myopic views, dumb or not dumb, stupid or whatever you call me i accept, but Information technolog is not static, so people get new ways to inject sql that you dont know Afam unless you are a God

BUT THAT IS NOT MY PROBLEM FOR NOW
PLEASE ANSWER MY SECOND QUESTION:
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU AS A WEB DEVELOPER any degree or any certification will help me shut up else you have to go study man
please
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 9:34pm On Jun 28, 2008
@Afam
all sql injection techniques were not found before I was twenty and that simply means you dont even know that this computer thing evolves.
facebook suffered sql injection some days back why wont these your sites be victimised if someone sits on them
anyway thats that
you keep reminding me that I am dumb, and I toldd you its your point of view i might be dumb or might not be it wont change me wink dig that please
One question
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU AS A WEB DEVELOPER ??
you asked for my portfolio I showed you, now tell me what qualifies you as webmaster dont run away from it, God web developer wink
Webmasters / Re: Deploying Generic Templates For Client Websites Is Rather Un Professional by mambenanje(m): 8:55pm On Jun 28, 2008
Afam
if you are the God of web development tell me
I wonder what will happen if you had the chance to become Seun Osewa with this your arogance. i expect you to be proud about making money not proud about un pleasantly designed sites. there is no place for bad design on the internet, but if its making money good and fine it works.
Seun is making his money and he doesnt care alot about the codes your preaching [ which I still doubt your competence ].
all in all good design is key to every good product. "go up come down " thats the point. If you want to sell me a badly designed house On seeing it, i wont go inside to even know how strong it is but a good design will make me go into the house to see whats there.
So bad design for good functional site will rather scare clients who wont even see your good functionality
take or leave it, its from the dumbest guy on nairaland
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 8:48pm On Jun 28, 2008
@Afam
I may be dumb like I clearly said on that "firefox helping scammers , " post, but thats just your point of view, why dont you practise what you preach
stick to the subject matter wink
I KNOW YOU ARE A VERY INTELLIGENT GUY, but what I must say is to me you are incompetent when it comes to web development,
your sites always reveal how your underlying database looks like: then what functionality are you even talking about.
I know guys dont know what I mean by this
you want me to attack you now let me do so but in a mature manner

if I see such a link index.php?article=108&category=business
I can use the query string to delete all articles on that site after two weeks, some sql injection, and all your sites show that.
I dont know why your even proud about all that.

Again i say you are intelligent: yet i want to challenge you to tell me what qualifications you have as a web developer. Are you certified, what proves you know what your doing.

You see thats why your works are not good, go to school please and respect yourself even if you dont want the respect from me
Webmasters / Re: Deploying Generic Templates For Client Websites Is Rather Un Professional by mambenanje(m): 8:00pm On Jun 28, 2008
@tunde, neptune
I think the main issue here is training and certificatioins. What I mean is for someone to understand how useful design is, ther person has to go back and get some proper education on web development and also THE WEB DEVELOPMENT PROCESS. Where in the client accepts your proposal upon seeing the design.
I don't see any educated web developer telling me the functional codes are more important than the design. I still stress that guys need to take some deep course on web development or any equivalent certification.
And as for nairaland design as Afam is always stressing, take some time off and compare these www.nairaland.com www.omo9ja.com www.blueworld.co.za www.zoopy.com,
nairaland was online about two years before www.blueworld.co.za and www.zoopy.com and blueworld has only 170 thousand africans but the money charl norman made from selling shares after one year is too much for his 23 year old self.
www.zoopy.com also just sold 40% to Vodacom - the largest south african telecom firm.
now tell me if they could associate with such big firms without having good design.
Web masters you should remember that the people using our sites don't know stuff about the codes behind it, all they can judge is what they see because its easier for them to comprehend.
That said, deploying a template for an online software like wordpress is good but deploying templates for your clients is a very very bad idea
CLIENTS ALWAYS STRESS ON BRANDING AND ORIGINALITY unless some small firms that just dont know much about the web, and they just take you as a God in IT. Such cases you have to educate them and not sell them a crapy template that you sell to everyone just because its easier and faster but in the long run they will still get to learn.
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 7:27pm On Jun 28, 2008
@Afam
Please stop amazing me I beg you. Your too old to be even arguing carelessly, just see how tunde is acting or my2cents almost your peers.

Nairaland is not a corporate website in other words its not an advertisement ground for any firm (company) and its services or products.

If you say MTN's website isnot usefull, then I don't understand you wink. Do you know they are the fourth largest firm in Africa. They have the cash power to empoy all sort of guys [ BUT IT REQUIRES CERTIFIED GUYS SO THAT THEY ARE SURE OF THEIR SKILLS ], and you say their sites are not usefull, SO THEY SHOULD COME GIVE YOU TO SHOW THEM HOW TO MAKE IT MORE USEFULL wink
you are a funny old man,
Well if you don't know: There are corporate websites like the ones you posted for review, and they are mainly a marketing tool just like a tv commercial but alot more more interactive and
There are web services( community sites) or the whole web 2.0 craze just like the ecomerce site you posted.
Now for a corporate site, the design is a very important factor IT MUST BE CATCHY to better market the firm, but the community sites like your nigerian buying and selling site or www.kerawa.com or www.facebook.com or nairaland.com, such sites are not corporate sites [ not marketing any company ] but offering a service to the world, so though their design must not be too flashy to ensure faster download, they still need good design just like any other product on earth : cars, houses, house ware, cloths, you can name the rest. Or Afam will you put on a dress thats not having a good design ?? if no thats the same way a company wont need a site thats not well designed.

AFAM PLEASE GIVE ME A CHANCE TO GIVE YOU THE RESPECT YOU NEED, LIKE I GIVE TO MY2CENT AND THE OTHERS
THANKS
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 12:02pm On Jun 28, 2008
@javaprince
my own point of view please
first and foremost we are talking about corporate sites or in other words sites that represent peoples products or their services for example a website for glo or website for MTN.
Approach them with such functionality before design sites and see how they will take it ??

nairaland is not representing anyfirm. its design is bent to be simple soo that it will be able to sustain the thousands of users on it.
Webmasters / Re: Small Challenge On Html And Css by mambenanje(m): 11:45am On Jun 28, 2008
@hanen
I dont see why you are against my topic, or do you want a fight with me if so girl I am sorry I am not into using bad words in forums wink
well I put up the idea so that guys can just do some personal assessment. look at the topic, I didnt say guys should post the code in here, just to write html with pen and paper to see your mastery of it.
If you dont like this topic why did you comment girl
If you think its not making sense why dont you post the topic that will make sense

I realy dont admire people attacking others for no just cause, add your view and leave it as it is. if you dont like a topic, ignore it dont try to proof to be better at thinking and creatinng topics, just go on and create the better one wink
ok pleasee guys if you realy think your comfortable with html and css just try writing full page on paper away from computer then give someone to type. I think it will give you some personal review.
Webmasters / Re: Small Challenge On Html And Css by mambenanje(m): 8:34pm On Jun 27, 2008
@yawa-ti-de
nice french example, and as for notepad I believe its a good way to test your proficiency in web design. Actually my test was even to go further and not type the codes in notepad but to write them up on piece of paper with pen and pencil then you hand it to another person to just type it and save as index.html
that way if you can come up with it [ even with errors as yawa right said ] then you can know how good you are.
you imagine, you write the html with inline css on paper which means you wont save from time to time to preview what you have done soo far, then you give to another person who somehow doesnt knwo anything about webpages. Then the person will just type and save it and its a web page wink
This is not the way to go to in a production site, but its a way to test your proficiency in html and css
Webmasters / Small Challenge On Html And Css by mambenanje(m): 5:03pm On Jun 27, 2008
who can write the html and css of a full webpage on paper with pencil and give to typist to just type it in notepad and save as index.html and its a good site ?
imagine the site in ur head, write down from the <html> tag till the </html> tag and give someone who just knows how to type and save it to .html and its good and presentable wink
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 3:29pm On Jun 27, 2008
@yawa-tide
like your approach to this post, but one thing I said am against is not Afam doing plain sites but the fact that he wants others to think thats the standard.
if you buy that idea let me know.
He wants to inspire others to forget design and concentrate on plain not soo good lucking sites just to go more on functionality even if they have the means to go in for good design and functionality.
FOR ALL I CARE HE CAN DO WHAT EVER HE WANTS WITH HIS CLIENTS they are his clients and I am not jealous, but he should stop telling guys that functionality is better than design. Bill Gates will tell you that good design with bad functionality is better than good functionality with bad design. And I will repeat that the answer to the future of web development [ design or functionality ] lies in these three things
USABILITY, ASSESSIBILITY AND AESTHETICS ,
webmasters study these key topics and choose your own answer if its design or functionality or both the way forward
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 11:49am On Jun 27, 2008
@Afam
this is my company portfolio ( what I mean is i am the CEO of that company ) www.afrovisiongroup.com/projects.php check out my works and if that will help you listen to me and get certified to perfect you skills, fine.
apart of that company portfolio I single handedly built www.webyfolio.com www.studentnetworks.in and currently my company is working on www.executiveasset.com, www.mpyraa.org, just to name a few.
I am a designer / developer.
I didnt want to list this before but I guess this is just answering you and not showing off. you should know who to challenge.
About you thinking am clueless, thats your point of view and I wont argue with that. I don't know everything about web development, I learn everyday and one important thing I make my money everyday. Besides am still a 22 year old bachelor in Africa which means I still have many things to learn professionally and socially.
With my portfolio I hope you are satisfied.
Webmasters / Re: Between Functionaly And Beauty - Where Lies The Future Of Web Development? by mambenanje(m): 11:44pm On Jun 26, 2008
@Afam
I might accept you doing functional though not good looking sites but I wont accept you inspiring others to follow because its simply bad. youtube is owned by Google, why didnt they change the design to the classic look and feel they usually put with their products or better yet blogger ?.
I have these questions for you:
- Should a functional site be ugly in terms of design ?
- Why was PhotoShop or Fireworks created and why is it taught to web developers in universities world wide ?
- Why do we have CSS  ?
  I can use html and table tags without any graphics and css to produce sites, realy ugly ones but use php or java or Asp.net to make it functional. I don't believe a site's functionality competes with its presentation. But like anything attributed to DESIGN on earth, web development has design inclusive and design is all about expresing beauty. So if you develop web sites [ you are a designer + software developer ], and since design is beauty. I don't get your argument, infact on this one you have no point. for the record html and css is part of web design and I would like you to develop your site without those two in other sense, develop your site without design and lets see if a browser will interprete it.
Please I will advice that african webmasters have to go in for certifications. take any adobe certification and you wont regret it.
Webmasters / Re: Active Records VS Sql What Do You Think ?? by mambenanje(m): 10:40pm On Jun 26, 2008
well something I didnt add is how to add WHERE, LIKE condition statements using active records
- they are done as shown below

/instantiate the active records database class
$db=new activeRecordsDB(array('host'=>'localhost','username'=>'root','password=>'passwod'));

//add a where clause
$db->where('name','%churchill%');
//or add a like clause
$db->like('website','%afrovisiongroup.com%');

//order the query by date registered
$db->orderby('dateregistered','desc');
//execute the query
$records=$db->get('users');
//loop through the records
foreach($records->result() as $user){
echo "name: ". $user->name;
}
