Some oil unions on Saturday blamed the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMA) for the persistent petrol queues being experienced across the country.

Speaking to newsmen at the tarmac of the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), in Suleja depot, the Chairman of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Alhaji Salihu Butu, said his members were paying higher for petroleum products.

According to Butu, IPMAN has 80 per cent of retail outlets (fuel stations) but gets 10 per cent products alongside buying above the ex-depot price to keep their stations open and in business.

A source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that DAPPMA gets the product at N117 from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the sole importer, and sells to marketers at N152 instead of the ex-depot price of N133.80.

According to Butu, the private depot owners do not sell to us at the official price. We buy at the unofficial price. How do we break even?

“Our stations sell at N180-N190 because when you get to the depots you are presented with two accounts for payment: one for the actual price and the other for the extra, otherwise you cannot lift’’.

Proffering solutions to the problem, Butu said only President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly could intervene in the fuel situation.

“Only President Muhammadu Buhari can solve this. He should come in, people trust him. When he increased price, people accepted, no questions asked. We knew it was for the better.

“The National Assembly also should invite all aggrieved members to get to the bottom of this.

“There should be equity in distribution. NNPC depots should be stocked back to back. Only Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) is loading.

“Mr Umar Ajiya of PPMC held meetings with us. We decided to cooperate and so I went to Aba, Warri, Mosimi and found that our members are given two-three trucks to share.

“To keep their stations open and stay in business, our members have to buy. All these should be looked into,’’ he said.

Mr Yakubu Ibrahim, the Secretary of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch of NUPENG in Suleja, told newsmen that if the government should provide infrastructure, security checks that caused gridlock along the way, the queues would have disappeared.

“Jebba to Mokwa is less than 100km (about 45 minutes drive) yet our members spend five hours there. Another gridlock is on the Agaie-Lapai-Lambata route.

“Another issue they can look into is the security checks. They cause gridlock of 10-15 and sometimes 20km. Our members spend two days on those spots.

“Like now we are waiting for them here and they are there. The check points are too many.

“The security agents keep stopping the drivers to dip, check specimen, or collect bribes even without having the right apparatus to check. All these cause unnecessary gridlocks,’’ Ibrahim said.

The Secretary of the Suleja branch of MOMAN, Mr Femi Akano told newsmen that “acts of sabotage on our part is untrue.

“Our members have complained of gridlocks, infrastructure and security checks as reasons for delays and we have cooperated with the government, so acts of sabotage on our part are untrue’’.

Mr Abdullahi Aminu, Assistant Commandant-General Operations of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), told NAN that the NNPC and the NSCDC have been collaborating to halt diversion of products.

“Dr Baru and the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Mr Abdullahi Muhammadu, collaborated to bring down the menace of diversion.

“Part of our mandate is to monitor national assets and distribution of petroleum products and so every truck distributing petrol has a personnel attached to it to ensure the tankers get to the intended destination.’’

He urged all station managers to check boots for jerry-cans, extra-fitted tanks for profiteers, who queued repeatedly, thereby hindering other motorists, saying they should be handed over to security agents.

“There has been no complaint of collusion to divert products from our personnel because they know it will lead to instant dismissal.

“We have arrested many miscreants who deal illegally and their cases are undergoing prosecution. They construct man-made tanks of 1,500 litres instead of the 50-60 litres.

“If 10 of these cars queue up, they can finish half a tanker that should have served more motorists, hence we carry out a stop-and-search car boots,’’ he said.

The fuel queues, which began on Dec. 7, cleared on Jan 2 at the FCT but re-surfaced on Jan.5 and are yet to clear.

NAN recalls that during a six-day monitoring by the Joint Task Force in 2017, more than 78,000 litres of petrol was dispensed free of charge to motorists in Abuja from various stations that sold more than approved pump price of N145 per litre.

A fake "Barrister" Chris Elisha who had been practicing as a lawyer for the past fifteen years without being spotted has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command.


Nemesis caught up with him yesterday 6th of February, 2018, at Ojo Magistrate court where he appeared on behalf of an accused person but found it difficult to move a motion for the variation of the bail condition of his client.


His predicament did not go unnoticed by one Barrister Nnamdi Samuel Nwafor who challenged his qualification. According to Bar. Nnamdi Nwafor, a newly qualified lawyer that is yet to cut his teeth at the bar would have been able to move a motion without issues.


The hot argument between both men attracted the attention of other lawyers and the court duty police men. The officers took the suspect to the nearby Ojo Police Station where he confessed that he is a mere "charge and bail lawyer" who had been practising for the past fifteen years.



He claimed he was more into corporate law practice and does little of litigation. He stated further that he read law at Eastern Ukrainian University, in the former Soviet Union but had no certificate to show for it.


"Barrister " Chris Elisha told the police that he is a native of Avodim Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia state.



The suspect is currently undergoing interrogation at the X- Squad Section of the State Police Command Headquarters and would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation.
In view of the above development, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, warned that police men are in every nook and cranny of the state and have been mandated to apprehend anybody perpetrating illegality no matter how highly placed.

A revenue collector working with the Oredo local government council of Edo State, simply identified as Osazuwa, has been reportedly beheaded by suspected cultists.

The incident was said to have occurred on Monday night at 3rd East Circular Road junction, by Ekiosa market around 8 pm.

The victim, a father of three, was said to be at his duty post when his assailants struck.

It was gathered that the killing might not be unconnected with renewed cult activities over a recent disagreement between members of and Eiye confraternity on one hand, and Maphite and Eiye confraternity group.

A witness who craved for anonymity said: “The gunmen came in commando style and started shooting sporadically to scare away people and afterwards attacked the victim (Osazuwa).

“The man tried to run for his life but a member of the gang who had closed in on him hit the deceased with a rod and he fell down.

“Other members of the gang immediately descended on the victim and used cutlass to dismember his body.”

Effort to reach police authority for comment failed, as the State Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kokumo and the Command’s spokesman, Chidi Nwanbuzor, were said to be on marathon meeting at the Command headquarters.

Tragedy struck in a community in Adamawa state on Thursday February 1st when a woman and her child fell into a well and died. The woman had her baby strapped on her back and was fetching water from the well when she unfortunately slipped and fell into it. Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state, saying laboratory tests have confirmed a total of 36 cases, including 9 deaths.

Akeredolu, who made the revelation in Akure during a live broadcast on Saturday night, said a total of 102 suspected cases of Lassa Fever had been reported in eight local government areas of the state.

“Thirty six of 79 cases have been confirmed with laboratory results, including nine deaths.

“Patients are being managed at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, while confirmatory tests are done at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State.

“At present, 127 hospital contacts and 308 community contacts were line-listed in all the affected local government areas while 30 had completed their follow-up,” Akeredolu said.

The governor disclosed that the government had reactivated Emergency Preparedness and Response Team at state and local government level to contain the spread of the disease.

He said this was in addition to active surveillance and contact tracing in the affected local government areas.

“Sensitization and community mobilization are also going on in all local government areas for traditional rulers, religious leaders, political leaders, market women and other stakeholders.

“Publicity is also ongoing through radio jingles, radio and television discussions in our media houses while educative materials such as handbills, flyers and posters have been produced and being distributed,” he said.

According to him, vehicles have been dedicated for transportation of samples and patients to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.

He added that the Infectious Disease Isolation Unit at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, had also been expanded.

Akeredolu explained that some Personal Protective Equipment, drugs, and hospital beds were donated to FMC, Owo, while more nurses were deployed to the Treatment Centre to support management of the patients.

The Lagos State Sports Commission and the entire Lagos sports family will on Sunday hold a candle light procession for the late Deji Tinubu at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun, Surulere.

The late Tinubu, who died suddenly on Thursday after slumping during a novelty football match, was a pioneer chairman of the Sports Commission and Special Adviser on Sports to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. He was redeployed by Governor as Special Adviser on Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, the post he held until his death.

The candle light procession is being held in honour of the deceased whose tenure as the Executive Chairman of the Commission saw good development in Lagos sports.

The procession will be led by the Executive Chairman of the Sports Commission, Dr Kweku Tandoh. Also to attend the event scheduled for 6pm on Sunday are the Director General of the Sports Commission, Mr Babatunde Bank-Anthony, top management staff of the commission, all other members of staff, friends and well wishers.

Mr Segun Oladitan, the Chairman of Osun Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) on Saturday said the low turnout at some polling units at the ongoing local government election was due to some misinformation by oppositions.

Oladitan while speaking with newsmen at the OSIEC Secretariat in Osogbo said he was surprised at the reports of low turnout in some polling stations.

He blamed the low turnout to some misinformation being spread by those opposing the election in the state.

He said described the oppositions as “mischief makers’’ saying they had been going around to tell the people that election would not hold.

Oladitan said it was falsehood from the distracters who claimed there was a court order restricting OSIEC from conducting the election.

He expressed delight however that new information reaching him indicated that the electorate were now turning out to vote.

Oladitan said the commission did a lot of sensitisation about the election, which resulted in large turnout of voters in some areas of the state.

On the late arrival of election materials, he said logistics and human factor were responsible for the late arrival.

“But the fact that election materials arrived at their scheduled destination at by 9a.m. was a reasonable time,’’ he said.
