Education / Outcome Of Feb 1st ASUU Emergency Meeting by Naijabams(m): 7:28am On Feb 02, 2019 |
The Emergency meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government on Friday ended in deadlock and was adjourned to February 7. The meeting which started few minutes to 12 noon and ended at 3:15 pm was held at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja. The national president of the union, Biodun Ogunyemi, declined making any comment concerning the outcome of the meeting. According to him, he will only communicate the outcome of the meeting to journalists after he must have communicated with other members of the union.. According to him, ”we have another set of information for our members and we will like to hear from them before saying anything. He however, disclosed that the meeting has been adjourned till next week Thursday. On the other hand, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige after the meeting said all the demands of the unions have been met. Ngige further stated that the Government will not be able to afford the N50 Billion Naira ASUU is demanding as part of commitment towards the revitalisation of public universities; however, the FG has offered something reasonable which ASUU are taking back to their members.. Both parties refused to give any specific details of what was discussed in the meeting. Source:- https://www.myedunews.com/2019/02/outcome-of-feb-1st-ASUU-emergency.html?m=1 |

Education / We Are Still Expecting Fg's Invitation - ASUP by Naijabams(m): 7:20pm On Jan 20, 2019 |
The National Vice President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Mr Timothy Ogunseye has revealed that the union after reviewing reports from various chapters at its emergency NEC meeting held last week Thursday, agreed that the ongoing strike should continue until the government can show some form of commitment. He recalled that the last meeting with the Federal Government on January10th could not hold due to the fact that the key stake holders from the Government were not available for the meeting and as such, ASUP couldn’t continue with the meeting and it was put off. He added that till now ASUP is still expecting another invitation from the FG. The ASUP President equally disclosed that the Federal Government promised to give the union N15bn revitalisation funds as a show of commitment which the union did not object to. But up until now, the promise has not been fulfilled. Ogunseye said the salient issues, which forced the lecturers to declare an indefinite strike, were not just about money for the lecturers but how to make the government address the dilapidated structures and lack of instructional materials to teach students. https://www.myedunews.com/2019/01/we-are-still-expecting-fgs-invitation.html?m=1 1 Like |

Education / FG Should Show Commitment By Releasing N50 Billion - ASUU by Naijabams(m): 2:29pm On Jan 18, 2019 |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the Federal Government to show commitment towards fulfilling the agreement it had with the union by releasing 50 Billion Naira to the union. This the union said is a condition for calling off the ongoing strike that commenced November last year. According to the union, the 50 Billion will form the first tranche of the N220 billion government agreed for the project this year and add to the N20 billion earlier released for the year. Speaking with newsmen on Wednesday night, the President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, said that the union is not asking the government to release the whole N220 billion at once but can spread the N220 billion for revitalisation of universities across four quarters. “In which case, the N50 billion they will release now, if you add to what they released, N20 billion for last year, we would have 150 billion left for the rest of the year and that has been spread over the next three quarters. “That’s what we’ve been saying as our minimalist position,” he said. On the issue of shortfall in salaries, the ASUU president revealed that the Government promised to release the shortfall in salaries by January 18th. He said the union will wait to confirm if the Government has released it. He further disclosed that the union has submitted its suggestions and may have a meeting with the Government next week. ======> https://www.myedunews.com/2019/01/fg-should-show-commitment-by-releasing.html?m=1 |
