Religion / Good Question: How Did Birthday Traditions Start? by NaijaNewsPapers: 3:33pm On Oct 14, 2019
To children of all ages, a birthday is a reason to celebrate. But why? What are the reasons for many of our birthday celebrations?

• Why do we celebrate birthdays?

The idea of celebrating the date of your birth is a pagan tradition. In fact, many Christians didn’t celebrate birthdays historically, because of that link to paganism.

Pagans thought that evil spirits lurked on days of major changes, like the day you turn a year older.

The ancient Greeks believed that each person had a spirit that attended his or her birth, and kept watch. That spirit “had a mystic relation with the God on whose birthday the individual was born,” says the book The Lore of Birthdays.

• Why do we blow out candles on our birthday?

The candles were a response to the evil spirits. They showed up to communicate with the gods. A light, in the darkness.

The Germans are credited with starting the kids birthday tradition in the 1700s. They put candles on tortes for “kinderfeste,” one for each year of life, along with some extras to signify upcoming years.

• Why do we sing “Happy Birthday To You?”

It’s the most recognizable song in the English language, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, and it started as a song for schoolkids.

In 1893, two Kentucky schoolteachers, Patty and Mildred Hill wrote “Good Morning To All.” The tune was published in a book for schoolteachers.

It’s unclear who changed the words to “Happy Birthday To You,” but in 1933, that song was in an Irving Berlin musical. One of the Hill’s sisters sued, arguing that they held the copyright to the song. They won the case, and the courts have ruled that copyright still holds today.

In fact, some believe the song is under copyright until 2030. The owner of the copyright splits proceeds with the Hill’s estate, reportedly $2 million a year.

• What’s the most common birth date?

Oct. 5 is considered to be the most common birthday in the United States. The reason is pretty obvious: go back 9 months, and you’ll find a conception date of New Year’s Eve. May 22 is considered to be the least common birthday in the United States.

Politics / Ffk React As DSS Arrest DG Of DSS During Jonathan's Administration by NaijaNewsPapers: 5:38pm On Aug 09, 2018
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Ita Ekpeyong.

Our correspondent who witnessed the arrest at 46, Maman Nasir Street, Asokoro, Abuja, on Thursday afternoon reported that the EFCC men came in three buses and some patrol vehicles accompanied by over 20 armed policemen.

The operatives then searched the mansion for over two hours before leaving at 3.20pm.

It was observed that no cash was recovered.

The raid occurred barely 10 months after the DSS under the leadership of the recently sacked DG, Lawal Daura, prevented EFCC men from searching or arresting Ekpeyong despite a court order.

Femi Fani-Kayode, A former minister of aviation on his verify Facebook, saying "The DG of DSS during President Goodluck Jonathan's administration, Mr. Ita Ekpeyong, has been arrested by the EFCC. The days of politically-motivated arrests and malicious witchunts are far from over. They will come up with their usual lies now to crucify the man before the world."

Politics / NASS Reconvenes To Consider Election Budget Next Week by NaijaNewsPapers: 5:19am On Aug 09, 2018
@Naijanewspapers

The National Assembly will reconvene next week to consider and possibly pass the N242billion budgeted for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for the conduct of the 2019 general election. INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this after a meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly led by Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

The INEC boss told journalists after the meeting that lasted for two hours the National Assembly assured that it will expedite action in passing the budget as early as next week. Confirming this, Senate minority whip, Philip Aduda, who is one of the principal officers of the National Assembly who attended the meeting however hinted that the legislature may concentrate only on N164 billion meant for INEC. “We agreed that if need be, we will resume from the ongoing long recess to consider the virement request from the president as regards the N164billion for INEC. A date will soon be fixed for consideration and approval of the request by both chambers of the National Assembly”, he said.

The INEC boss had earlier told the National Assembly leadership before going into closed door meeting with them that monies meant for the electoral body for the election should be appropriated for latest by next week to enable it embark on activities that must be done at least six months to the elections. Yakubu said, “We have from today exactly 191 days to the opening of polling units by 8:00am on Saturday, February 2019. There are activities we have to undertake for a minimum of six months to the Election Day and six months to Election Day kick-start from the 15th of August.

It means we have eight days to the commencement of these activities”. Earlier in their opening remarks, Saraki and Dogara told the INEC chairman that the essence of the meeting was to hear from him whether appropriation for the estimated budget for the electoral body was a matter of urgency or not. Saraki and Dogara had in a joint statement on Tuesday said the emergency meeting of National Assembly joint leadership slated for that day was postponed indefinitely following the invasion of the National Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). But addressing world press conference yesterday, Saraki said the leadership of the National Assembly was exploring avenues to address the budget proposal for INEC to conduct the 2019 polls.

He stated: “We stand committed to doing our utmost as lawmakers to ensure that the responsibility and functionality of governance are met. Although we are on annual break, we are daily reviewing the situation and are alive to the responsibility to take action as necessary. “Unfortunately, yesterday’s shutdown prevented us from meeting with INEC, as scheduled, to address funding concerns. We will continue to look into the matter. In the spirit of that, we also appeal to Mr. President to sign the 2018 Electoral Act Amendment Bill which has been sent for his assent”. Saraki took journalists by surprise when he disclosed that since leaders of the National Assembly were already present at the world press conference, he has sent for INEC chairman and his team for the meeting, which could not hold on Tuesday.

“Executive knows that it would conduct elections next year, why then waiting for so long before making request for funds to finance the exercise? In any case, we have sent for the INEC chairman since we leaders of both chambers are around presently so that we can meet today as we couldn’t meet yesterday’’, he said. After the press conference, Saraki and Dogara led leaders of the two chambers to the meeting with INEC officials. President Muhammadu Buhari had last month, before the National Assembly went on its ongoing recess, forwarded for approval N242billion budget estimates from INEC for conduct of the elections. President Buhari, a the letter, explained that out of the proposed N242, 445, 322, 600.00 billion estimated funding of the 2019 general election, N164.104billion should be appropriated for by the National Assembly through virement, while the balance of N78.340billon would be provided for in the 2019 budget.

Only 2/3 Majority Can Remove Me –Saraki

Meanwhile, Senate President Bukola Saraki said yesterday that only 2/3 majority members of the Senate can remove him from office and not the use of security forces. He alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators invited DSS operatives purposely to pave way for his impeachment and that of his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, instead of mustering 23rd majority of senators for their removal. Saraki who stated this at a world press conference said the invitation of the security operatives to assist in his impeachment through illegal session was a demonstration of cowardice on the part of APC Senators. He advised the plotters of the leadership change in the National Assembly to labour very hard in getting the required two-third majority of members of the Senate for that purpose rather than illegally using the security agencies to assaults the parliament and by extension democracy.

“The very day 2/3 majority of Senators withdraw their confidence in me or support for me I will quit as Senate president, the same path, I believe, my Deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, will toe if such scenarios play out “, he said. He condemned the siege laid by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on the premises of the National Assembly on Tuesday to facilitate the alleged plot for illegal leadership change in the Senate.

According to him, the show of shame that played itself out on Tuesday with the barricade carried out by the DSS operatives on all entries to premises of NASS and subsequent dismissal of the DSS Director, Lawan Daura, clearly shows that government within government earlier said to be in existence in the Buhari-led administration is true. He said, “The siege was an act of cowardice by those seeking to carry out an illegal impeachment of the leadership of the Senate in flagrant disregard of the law. People who seek control at all costs by whatever means never minding the injury to democratic norms. “I have to say that this is not about me, Abubakar Bukola Saraki as an individual. It is not about Ike Ekweremadu, nor is it about Yakubu Dogara.

I am speaking for my colleagues when I say that this is about the soul of Nigeria, what we represent as a country and our standing in the comity of nations. “This is most disheartening. I don’t get any joy in saying I said so. I don’t. However, some of you may recall that about two years ago, I stated that there was a government within this government, to a purpose that was not in the interest of what the people voted for. I said it then, and now we are beginning to see the manifestations of that government within a government. “It beats one’s imagination how the head of an agency could have authorize the brazen assault on the legislature that we saw yesterday (Tuesday). Despite the threat to our lives, we shall continue to fight impunity and injustice in this country”.

He commended PDP federal lawmakers for squaring it up with the security agencies during the invasion as well as the civil society organizations, the media, concerned Nigerians and the international community for rising up in defence of democracy. He maintained that no amount of intimidation will make him and his colleagues to surrender for impunity, recklessness and lawlessness. He continued: “By this, we have shown that Nigerians can resist government within government in whatever guise, and this is humbling for me. Those who sought to attack the National Assembly under my leadership for their selfish ends have only affirmed my belief in this country.

“They attempted to execute an illegal impeachment of the leadership of the Senate without the backing of the law, but they faltered. I am confident that, together, we shall always defeat acts of unconstitutionality. The rule of law shall always prevail”. Saraki called on President Buhari to sign the 2018 electoral bill into law, just as he assured Nigerians that the National Assembly, under his leadership, is studying the situation as regards urgent funds for INEC.

His words: “I want to reassure Nigerians that, on our part, we remain committed to working for a country governed by the rule of law. Our desire is to have a society where there will be equity and justice, not oppression. “We stand committed to doing our utmost as lawmakers to ensure that the responsibility and functionality of governance are met. Although we are on annual break, we are daily reviewing the situation and are alive to the responsibility to take action as necessary.

“Unfortunately, Tuesday’s shutdown prevented us from meeting with INEC, as scheduled, to address funding concerns. We will continue to look into the matter. In the spirit of that, we also appeal to Mr. President to sign the 2018 Electoral Act Amendment Bill which has been sent for his assent”.

Politics / Presidency: PDP Aspirants Can’t Defeat Buhari In 2019 by NaijaNewsPapers: 5:05am On Aug 09, 2018
@Naijanewspapers

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is sure that President Muhammadu Buhari will defeat other presidential candidates next year to continue his administration’s change agenda.

Prof. Osinbajo spoke yesterday at the Township Stadium in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, while receiving Senator Godswill Akpabio, who defected from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Acting President, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha; declared that treasury looters would no longer be allowed to return to power.

At the rally witnessed by a mammoth crowd of APC members and supporters of the ruling party were Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole; Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan, who led over 35 senators to the event, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki; the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Managing Director Nsima Ekere, a governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibom state; and Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate) Senator Ita Enang, among other leaders of APC.

Many members of the National Assembly, Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, State Working Committee (SWC) of PDP, former commissioners in the state and many elders of PDP across the three senatorial districts of Akwa Ibom State joined Akpabio in the APC.

Oshiomhole also announced the former governor of Akwa Ibom State (Akpabio) as the new leader of APC in the state.

The teeming members of APC and their supporters started arriving at the stadium from 7 a.m., for the event slated for 10 a.m. It kicked off over four hours behind schedule, with Akpabio arriving at the stadium, in company with his wife, Ekaete, at 2:20 p.m. Other leaders of the party arrived later.

Just as the rally was going on at the township stadium, PDP stakeholders in Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District kicked against the defection.

Addressing PDP supporters yesterday in Ikot Ekpene, the PDP’s political leader of the senatorial district, Senator Emmanuel Ibok-essien, claimed that Akpabio did not consult them before taking the decision to dump the PDP for APC.

Ibok-essien, who was the Deputy Director-General of Akpabio’s 2015 senatorial campaign organisation, stated that people of the area would not support Akpabio’s re-election into the Senate in 2019, calling on the people of the senatorial district and the state to support the re-election of Governor Udom Emmanuel and other PDP candidates in next year’s elections.

The Acting President said: “I came here to thank the people of Akwa Ibom State for the remarkable show of solidarity that you have exhibited today (yesterday). I came here to dispense this goodwill from the President and the Acting President for the show of solidarity and to tell you that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari loves the people of Akwa Ibom State. I have come here to share with you the thrust of this government and to give you some basic facts that will help you make up your minds as to the direction Akwa Ibom has decided to go in 2019.

“When this government came on board and as President Muhammadu Buhari constituted his cabinet, you will be shocked to find that there are 36 ministers; 18 of these ministers are Christians, 18 are Muslims. Out of the 18 Christians, nine are Catholics. In addition to that, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is a Christian, the Head of Service of the Federation is a Christian, the Vice-President is a Christian, the Governor of the Central Bank is a Christian.

“When we met with the Conference of Catholic Bishops, I told them that if there is anybody that owns this government, the Catholics have nothing really to complain, because they have nine ministers, in addition to the chairman of the party, the Governor of the Central Bank; they also have the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“People of Akwa Ibom State, I know that this is electioneering year, a lot of people will be going around offering their services to you. I have worked with all the candidates of the PDP. I know them personally. They are my friends. I do not have anything against them. If I have my way, I will ask the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow all of them compete, but I can assure you that all of them will be defeated by President Buhari in 2019, because all of them are from the Northern part of the country.

“In 2007, we barely got two million votes all over the nation. I can tell you that President Buhari has won consistently in their states. Is it Sokoto, is it Kano, is it Jigawa, is it Gombe, is it Adamawa? Where else? Buhari is the only candidate that can give you 10 million votes as head start. Why do you have to invest and engage a candidate that can just generate 300,000 votes in his state? It is a totally wasteful exercise.”

He spoke about the administration’s achievement, saying:

“I recommend the government of the APC to you, because it has delivered on all planks. We are growing the economy, your railways are coming on board. Work is being provided through the social intervention programme, security is being improved, in spite of the challenges and with Akwa Ibom coming on board, under the able leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, things will change and turn around for the better for the Niger Delta region.”

Prof. Osinbajo also lauded the people of Akwa Ibom State for the massive support, pleading with them to be ambassadors of the change, as they returned to their various homes and communities, thereby setting the foundation for the growth of democracy.

The Acting President also thanked Akpabio for his exemplary leadership, the uncommon transformation of Akwa Ibom State and his decision to turn around the fortunes of the Niger Delta region, adding that the entire Southsouth zone will be taken over by the APC.

To Oshiomhole, the sea heads at the stadium, the energy of the youth, their sheer determination, as evidenced by the fact that they had been waiting since morning, it was certain that they would have the change they desire. He described Akpabio as an “uncommon transformer”, for pulling the mammoth crowd.

Oshiomhole said: “Today (yesterday) is historic in the life of our party (APC). For too long, when I was governor of Edo State, even now my successor, Godwin Obaseki, we have always said that in the whole of the Southsouth, it is only in Edo State that APC has a governor. We are determined to find other states in the Southsouth to join forces with Edo State to sustain the changes that Nigeria badly requires.

“There are people who are giving the impression that Akwa Ibom State belongs to them, but today, with what my eyes have seen (mammoth crowd), in February next year, the great people of Akwa Ibom State will effect a change, under the leadership of a man of honour, Akpabio, who did what other people failed to do, by saying enough of the umbrella that has been badly shattered by terrible political weather, after misruling Nigeria for 16 years.

“What other people are afraid to do, Akpabio did it after deep reflection and he listened to the yearnings of his people, by sacrificing the title of Minority Leader of the Senate to join the APC. Akpabio did what Senator Bukola Saraki is unable to do and he has shown that the people of the Southsouth zone can be different, where it matters. We can stand up and be counted.

“I know that with your (Akpabio’s membership of our great party (APC), we will benefit from your uncommon transformational qualities that you demonstrated while you were the governor of this great state. You (Akpabio) are an uncommon defector. There are ordinary defectors, who want to move, but they want to steal the crown. We have an uncommon rally in Ikot Ekpene.

“Akwa Ibom people are united that in 2019, under the leadership and guidance of Akpabio, this state will join the states of progressive governance.

Politics / National Assembly Invasion: Saraki, APC Reps Demand Full Probe by NaijaNewsPapers: 4:55am On Aug 09, 2018
@Naijanewspapers

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, and the All Progressives Congress caucus in the House of Representatives have called for a full investigation into the invasion of the National Assembly on Tuesday by the operatives of the Department of State Services.

Saraki, who made the call at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, also dared the APC senators to carry out their impeachment threat against him, stressing that only two-thirds of members of the Senate could remove him and other leaders of the National Assembly

Saraki said he and his colleagues in the National Assembly leadership were prepared to step down the day two-thirds of members lose confidence in them.

He explained that the process of election and removal of principal officers in the National Assembly were clearly stipulated in the relevant sections of the laws guiding the operations of the legislature.

He said, “The day two-thirds of our members no longer have confidence in us, we will leave this place.”

The Senate President described Tuesday’s invasion of the National Assembly by officials of the DSS as a show of shame.

He claimed the invasion was part of a plot to force a change in leadership and that the plotters had been at it for months.

Calling for a probe into the invasion, the Senate President said, “This is an incident concerning which we have it on good authority that it has been in the planning for months, and yet it was allowed to happen. How is it that such an atrocity was not prevented?

“How is it that the masterminds were not deterred? Very serious questions remain that can only be answered by a full investigation. We call for an investigation, and we demand that all perpetrators are brought to book.

“We owe it to ourselves to ensure that such a situation never occurs again. Many agencies have abused their powers and acted outside the ambit of the law. Where abuses occur, similar actions must be taken immediately and full investigation instituted.”

He maintained that the invasion of the assembly complex should not have happened in the first place, noting that Nigeria reaped the bitter fruits instantaneously as “evident in media images relayed around the world, images that shame us as a democratic nation.”

He added, “The siege was also an act of cowardice by those seeking to carry out an illegal impeachment of the leadership of the Senate in flagrant disregard of the law. People who seek control at all costs, by whatever means, never minding the injury to democratic norms.

“I have to say that this is not about me, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, as an individual. It is not about Ike Ekweremadu, nor is it about Yakubu Dogara. I am speaking for my colleagues when I say that this is about the soul of Nigeria, what we represent as a country and our standing in the comity of nations.

“This is a country where so much is expected of us. So many rungs of the ladder that we are supposed to have ascended as a nation; instead we are wallowing in impunity and illegal show of force, all of which retard our progress.”

He explained that he didn’t derive joy in saying he warned the nation about two years ago that there was a government within the President Muhammadu Buhari government and that its interest was at variance with the interests of Nigerians who voted this administration into power.

Saraki said, “I said it then, and now we are beginning to see the manifestations of that government within a government. It beats one’s imagination how the head of an agency could have authorised the brazen assault on the legislature that we saw yesterday. Despite the threat to our lives, we shall continue to fight impunity and injustice in this country.”

He expressed gratitude to Nigerians for standing to defend democracy with the actions they took to end the siege, noting that the efforts of Nigerians put the aggressors to shame.

According to him, the resistance mounted by the staff of the National Assembly, legislators and Civil Society Organisations who refused to leave the entrance of the complex until the siege was broken, strengthened his faith in the people of Nigeria.

“The rain fell, the sun rose, but Nigerians stood their ground in defence of democracy. With the strength of will demonstrated by everyone against unwarranted and unconstitutional militaristic might, the siege could not stand.

“By this, we have shown that Nigerians can resist government within government in whatever guise and this is humbling for me.

The rule of law shall always prevail,” he said.

While expressing gratitude to Nigerians for standing up for their action, he singled out Boma Goodhead, the female member of the House of Representatives, for standing up to the masked security men and daring them to shoot as she demanded an end to the siege.

He expressed gratitude to the acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, over his handling of the situation. Saraki explained that his decisive action went a long way towards restoring public confidence.

Saraki observed that the acting President’s action sent a powerful message “that the DSS cannot be recklessly deployed against institutions of our democracy. The path of leadership is not by party and we must commend it wherever it is found. Mr acting President did the right thing. However, the damage control so far does not address the question of how this atrocity happened in the first place.”

The lawmaker reiterated that when he joined other Nigerians about four years ago to fight for change, no one envisaged a scenario such as the one that unfolded on Tuesday.

He noted that there were many lessons to be drawn from the ugly incident which played out on Tuesday, adding, “For one, government must ensure that security agencies remain neutral and act in line with the position of the constitution as well as their enabling laws. Heads of agencies should be accountable, and those who step out of line must be held responsible for their actions. Enough with impunity, enough with the reckless and senseless deployment of militaristic force. Enough.”

He assured Nigerians of the commitment of the National Assembly to a country governed by the rule of law. He pointed out that legislators had a desire to have a society where there would be equity and justice, not oppression.

The Senate President urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the 2018 Electoral Act Amendment Bill which has been sent for his assent. In response to a question on his reaction to the defection of Senator Godswill Akpabio from the Peoples Democratic Party, Saraki dismissed it as “a local issue” and that the issues he was addressing were national. He however alluded to the fact that there was freedom of association.

Investigation must uncover truth —APC Reps

On its part, the APC caucus at the House of Representatives called for a full investigation into the Tuesday’s siege laid to the National Assembly by operatives of the DSS.

The House Leader and leader of the APC caucus, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, who gave its position in Abuja on Wednesday, stated that while the lockdown must be condemned, a full investigation would unearth the whole truth behind the action of the security operatives.

The caucus applauded the immediate step taken by the Presidency in firing the Director-General of the DSS, Mr Lawal Daura.

It added that the APC members were still reviewing the incident and would come out with a detailed statement.

It stated further, “The siege to the National Assembly by the DSS operatives must be condemned by all men and women of goodwill.

“We must however tarry a while until investigations are completed and facts of what actually happened emerge.

“We must act responsibly and no one must be allowed to bring down our hard earned democracy. The Presidency has done what needs to be done at a time like this and the APC caucus of the House will make a full statement in the next couple of days.”

APC makes a U-turn, defends DSS’ action

The APC, which had on Tuesday absolved itself from the invasion, on Wednesday defended the action of the DSS operatives.

The APC claimed that the action of the DSS officers was taken to prevent a plot by Saraki to incite violence.

This was contained in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Yekini Nabena, in Abuja.

The APC’s new position is in sharp contrast to the position it took soon after the invasion on Tuesday, when it condemned the DSS action and dissociated itself from it.

The APC said on Wednesday that the “timely intervention” of the security operatives averted a potential loss of lives, injuries and destruction of property.

Nabena alleged that Saraki mobilised thugs to the National Assembly adding that the new position was the product of an investigation.

The statement read, “Following Tuesday’s incident at the National Assembly, our investigations have now uncovered the sinister plot hatched by the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, to foment violence in the legislative chamber all in a bid to stop his impeachment,” the statement read.

“Our investigations uncovered and noted the following: We are now aware that the timely intervention of the security operatives forestalled the planned violence which could have led to possible deaths, injuries and destruction of property in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

“Why did the Senate President mobilise thugs to the National Assembly who almost lynched Hon. E.J. Agbonayinma, the only APC federal lawmaker present but for the timely intervention of security operatives.”

He added, “Why did the Senate President reconvene the National Assembly? Ostensibly as a pre-emptive move to frustrate federal lawmakers’ move to remove him.

“Is it not curious that only the Peoples Democratic Party federal lawmakers were present in their numbers, some as early as 7am, while the majority APC federal lawmakers were elsewhere holding a caucus meeting on the state of the nation.”

Nabena called on security agencies to probe the incident and take necessary action.

“As espoused in our earlier statement, whilst our contention with the leadership of the National Assembly as currently constituted is a matter of public record, we still believe that the legislature as an independent arm of government must be allowed free reign for vibrant contestation of ideas and values amongst its members within the context of their constitutional mandate and for the benefit of the Nigerian people,” he said.

He called for the resignation of the Senate President, saying, “Finally, we reiterate our call for the Senate President to resign from the position immediately as he no longer has the moral and legitimate grounds to occupy that position as a member of the minority PDP.

“Going by the popular axiom, the majority will have their way, but the minority will have their say.”

Daura’s sacking, unanimous decision by Buhari, Osinbajo – Presidential aide

Also on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said the Tuesday sacking of Mr Lawal Daura as the DSS DG was a unanimous decision.

He said there was no way the acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, would have taken the decision without the consent of President Muhammadu Buhari who is currently on vacation.

Adesina gave the explanation while answering questions from State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said since there was no power tussle between the two leaders, he expected that the decision would be a unanimous one.

The presidential spokesman added that Osinbajo, being a decent man, would have done the needful before taking the decision.

He reiterated his position that the Presidency remained one.

Adesina said, “What we will like to say for the umpteenth time is that the Presidency is one.

“Whenever the President is proceeding on vacation, he transmits power to the vice-president, who then becomes the acting President. On this occasion he also did that. So, the acting President has all the powers of a President.

“Now, it is a matter of decency and we know that the acting President is a decent man. There is no tussle for power; there is no tough battle between him and the President.

“When something like what happened yesterday (Tuesday) will happen, there will be unanimity. There is no way there won’t be unanimity on that kind of decision. It is not something that will be discussed with the press but know that there was unanimity in the decision.”

Obasanjo, Jonathan, Buhari used force against NASS, alleges TI

The Transparency International, a global watchdog, on Wednesday condemned the siege to the National Assembly by operatives of the DSS.

It noted that the administrations of former Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, also used force against the legislature.

The TI said the sack and subsequent arrest of the former Director-General of the DSS, Lawal Daura, were commendable, adding that the police must be thorough with the investigation.

The TI Nigeria Head, Musa Rafsanjani, in an exclusive interview with our correspondent, recalled that in November 2014, some members of the House of Representatives under the APC, which was then the party in opposition, were prevented by security agents from gaining access to the National Assembly Complex.

The action by the security men forced the lawmakers to scale the fence.

The TI Head, Rafsanjani, said, “We are seeing a repeat of this impunity and abuse of power that have been happening unfortunately since the return of democracy in 1999. We have seen it under Obasanjo where not less than four senate Presidents were forcefully removed and where about three state governors were also removed using the state instrumentality.

“We have also seen the repeat of this irresponsible attitude during Jonathan where the National Assembly members were also blocked and denied access into their offices. We have seen the DSS locking out the opposition parties at that time also.

“This time around, we are seeing a repeat of such culture of abuse of office by impunity and rascality demonstrated by leaders to suit their political interests. This is not the kind of democracy we fought for.

We cannot allow such harassment and intimidation of the so-called opposition parties. Politicians at all levels are not learning any lesson.

“The good thing at this time was the swift response from the Presidency. The first thing was for the head of such agency to be removed because he has abused his power.

His action amounted to undermining the responsibilities of the government. It is good that he is being investigated so that we can have a loaded response not only to the DSS but to other security agencies which may have plans to toe that line.”

Daura to remain under house arrest — Security source

The sacked Director General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, will remain under house arrest.

A security source who spoke on condition of anonymity told newsmen on Wednesday.

Daura was sacked by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, for unauthorised invasion of the National Assembly and was promptly arrested right inside the Presidential Villa by men of the Nigeria Police Force.

The source also confirmed that Daura had been under house arrest in one of the presidential guest houses in Aso Rock.

“He will remain there until several investigations over certain issues bordering on him are concluded,” the source added.

With Ekiti, APC in Firm Control of South-west - THISDAY
Mon, 16 Jul 2018

With last Saturday’s election of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, as the next governor of Ekiti State, the South-west geo-political zone has now come under the firm grip of the ruling party, a feat that had not been performed since 1979, when the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), cornered all the three states in the region.

Fayemi had prevailed over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Professor Kolapo Olusola, by 197,459 to 178,115 of the 384,594 votes cast in the keenly contested election.

While President Muhammadu Buhari led the retinue of celebrants that congratulated Fayemi on his victory yesterday, the PDP rejected the results of the election, calling it a daylight robbery.

The PDP leaders went into a meeting yesterday to review the election and decide on its next move, party sources told THISDAY.

PDP rejects Fayemis victory, says its daylight robbery - PUNCH
Mon, 16 Jul 2018
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has rejected Saturday’s governorship election results in Ekiti State.

It described the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission as a daylight robbery.
But the Presidency, in its reaction berated the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, describing him as “a high-powered nothing.”

Fayose had, during the electioneering, supported his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, who is the candidate of the PDP in the election.

INEC had early on Sunday announced the All Progressives Congress’ candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi as the winner of the election.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan and Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, who announced the results, said Fayemi had satisfied the requirement of the law by polling the highest lawful votes in the election.

Fayemi polled 197, 459 to beat Olusola of the PDP, who scored 178,121 votes. He won in 12 Local Government Areas while Olusola won in four local governments.

Fayemi’s victory an endorsement of Buhari administration, says FG - GUARDIAN
Mon, 16 Jul 2018

The Federal Government yesterday described the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s Ekiti governorship election as a referendum on the performance of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, declaring: “Nigerians have given their verdict.”The keenly contested election had pitted APC contestant and former Minster of Solid Minerals Development Kayode Fayemi against Deputy Governor Olusola-Eleka.

Making the disclosure at a press conference in Lagos, Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the outcome was also a “death knell for fake news.” According to him, “Anyone who monitored the social media before and during the election would think it would be a landslide for the PDP. But the reality is different.”Mohammed, who thanked Ekiti people for ensuring the election was credible, accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of rigging the 2014 poll in the state.

Ekiti: 4 Years After, Fayemi Returns To Ayaba House - LEADERSHIP
Mon, 16 Jul 2018

Four years after he was allegedly rigged out of office by the past administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr John Kayode Fayemi, is set to return to Ayaba House, the Ekiti State Government House, in October to continue his job as governor, following his victory in Saturday’s governorship poll in the state. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the former minister of mines and steel winner of the fiercely contested election after collation of the results. The chief returning officer and Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, who declared Fayemi the winner and governor-elect just yesterday said Fayemi polled 197,459 votes to defeat his PDP rival, Olusola Eleka, who got 178,121 votes Olayinka said, while 909,589 voters were registered for the election, only 405,861 voters were accredited to vote in the election, even as total valid votes stood at 384,594 votes, with 15,857 declared invalid and total votes cast standing at 402,451. “I,

Olusola for tribunal as PDP kicks

Saturday’s victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Kayode Fayemi came from a combination of factors and the performance of key party leaders in their strongholds.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Fayemi winner with 197, 459 votes. His closest rival, Prof. Kolapo Olusola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 178, 459 votes.

Fayemi won in 12 of the 16 local government areas. Olusola won in four.

In the four local governments, Olusola edged Fayemi with the highest number of over 5,000 votes in his hometown Ikere, but the over 5,000 margin with which Fayemi won in Ise/Orun Local Government cancelled that out.

Ise/Orun is the home local government of former PDP National Publicity Secretary Dayo Adeyeye, who defected to the APC after the PDP primary.

Fayemi’s victory reverberated in the local government areas, leaving many PDP casualties in its wake.

Politics / Ado-ekiti Residents Tackle Gov. Fayose, Stop Demolition Of Shrines by NaijaNewsPapers: 9:50am On Apr 07, 2018
There was pandemonium yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, after angry residents resisted the demolition of some shrines and sacred trees by officials of the state government.

The ongoing demolition of structures in Ado-Ekiti is part of the urban renewal policy of Governor Ayo Fayose’s administration.

During the pandemonium, adherents of the deities at the shrines almost attacked men of the demolition squad but the intervention of armed security men deployed to the scene saved the day.

The residents of neighbourhoods in the Oja Oba area insisted the shrines would never give way for the urban renewal exercise which they said was done in bad faith by the state government.

They had mobilized themselves on sighting two bulldozers deployed to pull down the two shrines in the vicinity.

The Ogun shrine and the Ejeye Oka Ere shrine are located in the court of the Arowa of Ado-Ekiti.

Armed security men were mobilized to the scene and entrance to Ewi’s Palace, to prevent breakdown of law and order.

The protest led to temporary suspension of work on the shrines and the sacred trees.

But the locals remained at the scene raining curses and pouring invectives on the government for the action they described as “desecration of tradition which will have dire consequences.”

The latest demolition operation which started on Thursday saw at least four corpses exhumed from where they were buried which angered the deceased’s family members.

Politics / No Man Born Of A Woman Can Stop Me From Becoming Governor - Imo Deputy Gov by NaijaNewsPapers: 6:17pm On Mar 17, 2018
Eze Madumere, deputy governor of Imo state, says nobody can stop him from achieving his ambition of becoming the next governor of the state. Rochas Okorocha, the state governor, has endorsed Uche Nwosu, his son-in-law, as his successor. This has created a friction in the cabinet, with reports making the rounds that there is a plot to remove Madumere for standing in the way of the political heavyweights. In a statement by Uche Onwuchekwa, his spokesman, Madumere said owing to his years of experience in the private and public sectors, he is more qualified to succeed Okorocha.

“The deputy governor once more likened his betrayal from those he managed and nurtured to limelight politically to that of the betrayal of the Lord Jesus Christ, who was also betrayed by those he loved and called his friends,” the statement read. “He, however, vowed that no man born of a woman could stop his ambition, saying that God remained the ultimate decider of anyone’s future.” Okorocha had said God is in support of the governorship ambition of Nwosu.

Last month when he received leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Owerri municipal council, Okorocha said Nwosu, who is married to his first daughter, has all it takes to be a good governor. “Uche Nwosu is hardworking, and never gets tired. I have checked him in and out, I have not found him wanting,” he had said in a statement. “He is a very humble young man. Not proud. Not arrogant. So, power won’t enter his head.

In spite of the position he occupies, you can’t see him quarrelling with anybody or maltreating anybody. He does not segregate anybody, whether from Orlu or Owerri or Okigwe zone. He relates with people enviously.” On whether Nwosu is from the zone that ought to produce the next governor, Okorocha said: “Zoning does not put food on the table of anybody. What the state wants is Imo governor and not Owerri zone or Orlu zone or Okigwe zone governor.

The young man is a team player who does not use his office to molest anybody. He has the qualities of a good leader. If he says he will run for governor, I will support him.” Madumere and Nwosu are from Imo west senatorial district. Nwosu is currently the chief of staff to the governor.

Politics / THE NATION HEADLINE: Buhari Seeks Peace Over Order Of Elections, Budget by NaijaNewsPapers: 8:57am On Mar 16, 2018
A major trouble-shooting effort was launched last night to halt the imminent showdown between the Executive and the Legislature.

On the agenda were:

the controversial election sequence reordering, which is a subject of litigation;
the 2018 budget, which is stuck at the National Assembly— four months after it was presented by President Muhammadu Buhari; and
the worrisome security situation.
Last night President Buhari met at the Presidential Villa with the leadership of the National Assembly.

The meeting, which started around 9p.m, was attended by Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Deputy Speaker Lasun Yussuff, Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan and House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila, among others.

After the meeting, Saraki told reporters that the frosty relationship between the Executive and the Legislature was discussed. The budget was also discussed, he said.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha confirmed that the threat by the lawmakers to override the President’s veto on the Electoral Act amendment was discussed. He gave no details.

On the budget, the lawmakers were said to have complained that some ministers were yet to defend their inputs.

Buhari was said to have directed the SGF to write the ministers, directing them to defend their budgets.

Earlier in the day, the Senate during plenary decided to write to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to protest the ruling stopping the lawmakers from overriding the President’s veto on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

It was also learnt that based on legal advice, which suggested that the President’s reasons for declining assent was not watertight, the lawmakers had decided to override the veto next week.

The controversy trailing the rejection of the Electoral Act 2018 amendment by President Muhammadu Buhari may be far from over.

The National Assembly yesterday listed “flaws” in the constitutional provision relied upon by President Buhari to withhold assent to the Bill.

The leadership of the two chambers of the National Assembly is said to have met Wednesday night to consider submissions from the legal department of the Assembly.

It was gathered that the legal advice dismissed the constitutional provisions cited by President Buhari as basis for his action “as baseless and of no effect to form the basis of withholding assent to the Bill”.

The Senate and House Representatives leadership “accepted the submissions received from the legal department,” a source said.

The implication of the acceptance of the submissions of the legal department, the source said, “is that the two chambers may go ahead to override the veto of Mr. President to the Bill.”

The source hinted that “the two chambers appeared to be poised to do battle with Mr. President by exercising their power to override the president on any issue they feel strongly about”.

He added that the amendment of the Electoral Act which altered the sequence of elections, seems to be one of the issues the lawmakers are convinced was done “in the best interest of the country”.

The legal advice obtained by our reporter states: “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria vetoed the 2018 Amendment of the Electoral Act of 2010 passed by the National Assembly in the exercise of its constitutional powers under Section 58(4 oi) Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended following reasons.

“Each of the legal and constitutional reasons advanced by the President as a basis for the veto were examined in details below.

“1. The President claims that the Amendment introducing a specific sequence for elections under Section 25 of the Principal Act 2010 infringed the discretion of the Independent National Electoral Commission to “organise, undertake and supervise elections.” This argument is flawed because correct legal position however is that by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 First Alteration Act 2010, Act No. 1, specifically, Section 5 provides that “Section 76 of the Principal Act is altered thus

“(a)subsection (1) in line 2, by inserting immediately after the word ’commission’ ’the words’ ’in accordance with the Electoral Act. “

“From the above amendment, it is crystal clear that the power to regulate the principal elements of all Federal Electoral process was expressed by the above amendment, removed from the Independent National Electoral Commission and vested in the Assembly (N.A) which has the power to make laws for peace, order and good government” of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and any part thereof.

“Furthermore, the phrases ‘organize, undertake & supervise’ elections under Section 15(a) of the 3″ Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, according to the President, allegedly infringed the discretion guaranteed” to lNEC by Section 25 of the of the Principal Act.

“1. The argument of the President that the sequencing of the elections under Section 25 infringed the discretion of INEC without expressly pointing out what specific aspects or ways and manner cannot be a basis for legal or constitutional argument or decision. With due respect, the opinion expressed is too general to establish a basis for the exercise of a legal or constitutional power, more so because “discretion” is a principle governed by the rules of Administrative Law and not that of Constitutional Law, on which the President claimed to have anchored his arguments.

“2) .Thirdly, the terms “organise, undertake and supervise” may have conferred a wide discretion on lNEC in matters of all logistics in the preparation and conduct of elections, the issue of discretion only comes to fore in the actual details of the preparation, organizing and conducting elections.

”It is respectfully submitted that the sequencing of the elections in a Bill as to which was scheduled as first or last in the conduct does not in any way hamper or affect the discretion and capacity of INEC to organise, undertake and conduct these elections into various constitutional offices provided.

“3) The new subsection (3) introduced into Section 138 of the Electoral Act, which the President argued repealed two crucial grounds upon which elections could be challenged, is not entirely correct and the view could be misplaced for the following reason:

“a. The new Subsection (3) to section 138 actually clarifies the ambiguity contained in subsection 1 of the Principal Act and reinforces the constitutional standards specified in Sections 65, 106, 131 and 177 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999. In addition, it further provides that no person shall be qualified to contest elections in breach of any of the ‘Sections 66, 107, 137 or 182 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

“The amendment to Section 152 (3)-(5), which collectively imposed an obligation on the State independent Electoral Commissions to apply the standard of ‘free, fair and credible elections in the conduct of Local Government elections’ is within the competence of the National Assembly to make laws in respect of the procedure regulating elections into the Local Government Councils in accordance with item 11 (Eleven) of the Concurrent Legislative List of the 1999 Constitution as amended. What specific aspects or ways and manner cannot be a basis for legal or constitutional argument or decision. With due respect, the opinion expressed is too general to establish a basis for the exercise of a legal or constitutional power more so because “discretion” is a principle governed by the rules of Administrative Law and not that of Constitutional Law which the President claimed to have anchored his arguments.

“Thirdly, the terms “Organize, undertake and supervise” may have confer a wide discretion on lNEC in matters of all logistics in the preparation and conduct of elections, the issue of discretion only comes to fore in the actual details of the preparation, organizing and conducting elections. It is respectfully submitted that the sequencing of the elections in a Bill as to which was scheduled as first or last in the conduct does not in any way hamper or affect the discretion and capacity of INEC to organize, undertake and conduct these elections into various constitutional offices provided.

“3) The new subsection (3) introduced into Section 138 of the Electoral Act, which the President argued repealed two crucial grounds upon which elections could be challenged is not entirely correct and the view could be misplaced for the following reason:

“a. The new Subsection (3) to section 138 actually clarifies the ambiguity contained in subsection 1 of the Principal Act and reinforces the constitutional standards specified in Sections 65, 106, 131 and 177 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999. In addition, it furthe provides that no person shall be qualified to contest elections in breach c any of the ‘Sections 66, 107, 137 or 182 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.”

“The amendment to Section 152 (3)-(5) which collectively imposed an obligation on the State Independent Electoral Commissions to apply the standard of “free, fair and credible elections in the conduct of Local Government elections” is within the competence of the National Assembly to make laws in respect of the procedure regulating elections into the Local Government Councils in accordance with item 11 (Eleven) of the Concurrent Legislative List of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“It is therefore not entirely correct, with all due respect, for the Mr. President to argue that the amendment may raise constitutional issues over the competence of the National Assembly to legislate on Local Government elections. The Supreme Court of Nigeria has decided on this issue in the famous case of Attorney General of Abia State & Ors v Attorney General of the Federation & Ors.

Schoolgirls abduction: My response better than Jonathans, says Buhari
Thu, 15 Mar 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said his administration’s response to the February 19 abduction of 110 pupils of Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, was better than the response of the last administration to a similar abduction in Chibok, Borno State.

He said while the Federal Government under his watch swung into action immediately after the abduction, the last administration looked the other way when schoolgirls were abducted in Chibok in 2014.

Buhari spoke at a town hall meeting with traditional and community leaders, as well as other stakeholders in Damaturu, as part of activities lined up for his official visit to Yobe State.

Buhari, who arrived the state in a Nigerian Air Force helicopter via Maiduguri, touched down at the August 27th Stadium in Damaturu and was received by the state Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, among other top government functionaries.

The President, during the stakeholders’ meeting, said the commitment displayed by his administration had led to the rescue of more than 100 Chibok girls taken into captivity before he assumed office.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan was in the saddle when the Chibok girls were abducted by Boko Haram in 2014.

Buhari said, “The Federal Government’s response to the unfortunate abduction of the schoolgirls is a clear departure from the insensitivity of the past administration which looked the other way while the Chibok girls were taken away in 2014 and held in captivity for over three years.

“Due to our commitment, over 100 Chibok girls have been rescued and reunited with their families, sent back to school and empowered with requisite skills.

“You may recall that recently, our negotiation efforts led to the release of abducted University of Maiduguri lecturers, some women police personnel, students and even an NYSC member.

“We, therefore, have no doubt that the Dapchi girls will be rescued or released. I can assure parents, Nigerians and the international community that we will do all that is within our power to make sure that the girls are brought back safely to their families.”

Politics / Stephen Hawking, Modern Cosmology's Brightest Star, Dies Aged 76 by NaijaNewsPapers: 9:13am On Mar 14, 2018
Stephen Hawking, the brightest star in the firmament of science, whose insights shaped modern cosmology and inspired global audiences in the millions, has died aged 76.

His family released a statement in the early hours of Wednesday morning confirming his death at his home in Cambridge.

Hawking’s children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.

“He once said: ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him for ever.”

For fellow scientists and loved ones, it was Hawking’s intuition and wicked sense of humour that marked him out as much as the fierce intellect which, coupled with his illness, came to symbolise the unbounded possibilities of the human mind.

HIS FAMOUS QUOT:
Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.

Politics / "Visitation To Buhari Caused Tillerson’s Sack" - FFK by NaijaNewsPapers: 5:01pm On Mar 13, 2018
A former Minister of Aviation of Nigeria, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said that US Secretary, Rex Tillerson, might have been affected by his visitation to President Muhammadu Buhari.

It will be recalled that Tillerson was sacked by US President Donald Trump 12 hours after visiting President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock.

Fani-Kayode in a tweet on Tuesday alleged that President Muhammad Buhari has ‘chronic bad luck’.

He said: “If it is not that Buhari has chronic bad luck how is it that within 12 hours of seeing him in Abuja, Rex Tillerson, the American Sec. of State, was removed from office by @realDonaldTrump and replaced with George Pompeio of the CIA?Congrats George! My advice?Steer clear of Buhari!”

The tweet, however, generated reactions from Nigerians; majority of whom described FFK’s tweet as a hate speech.

One of them, Sade Olamide cautioned Nigeria’s policiticians over Tillerson’s sack, saying: “President Trump is sending a LOUD message to Nigerians and to the political elite. Unfortunately, our leaders have no knowledge of understanding the global rearrangement, etc.”

Politics / THE NATION: How Oduah, Others Shared N3.9b Airports Contracts Cash by NaijaNewsPapers: 6:40am On Feb 06, 2018
There is N9.4 billion meant for the installation of security devices at the 22 airports?

This is the knot the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is battling to untie.

Its detectives have traced about N3.9billion of the N9.4billion to a company belonging to a former Minister of Aviation, Sen. Stella Oduah and five other firms.

The firms are Broadwaters Resources Company Limited; Sobora International Limited; Global offshore and Marine Limited; Tip Top Global Resources Limited and Crystal TV .

About 61 suspects have been grilled by the anti-graft agency in connection with the alleged diversion of the cash.

The EFCC has obtained a court order to impound six dredging vessels, quarry equipment and some equipment bought for Crystal TV under the Interim Forfeiture clause in its Act.

The commission has raised a team to interrogate Mrs Oduah, a senator.

According to a fact-sheet, which was obtained by our correspondent, Tip Top Global Resources Limited, which is linked with the family of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, was paid N780million for unknown services.

The document states: “The contract is for the sum of N9,443,549,531.25 for the procurement and installation of equipment in 22 airports. No evidence that due diligence was carried out before the contract was awarded.

“ This contract was initially awarded to a company called Cybernetics Limited. Ex- President Goodluck Jonathan approved the award to Cybernetics and the Bureau of Public Procurement issued a certificate of no objection. But due to the reduction of the cost from over N10b

to N9.4b., Cybernetics rejected the award.

“I-SEC, which was supposed to be technical partner to Cybernetics, was later proposed by the ex-Minister of Aviation for the contract.

”Out of the contract sum, N3, 911, 887, 753.56 was fraudulently diverted, misappropriated and laundered through some companies. Investigators have been able to trace the cash.”

A director of I-SEC is said to have refunded about N240million to EFCC out of the slush funds traced to him. The EFCC has located six dredging vessels, quarry equipment and equipment bought for Crystal TV. An interim forfeiture order has been obtained on these equipment.

The N3, 911, 887, 753.56 was “paid to other beneficiaries who do not have direct or indirectly connection to the execution of the contract.”

“About N839, 780,738.09 was remitted to Broadwaters Resources Company Limited N839, 780,738.09 which had no relationship with I-SEC. The cash paid into Broadwaters was later diverted into another firm called Sobora International Limited to liquidate an existing loan into First Bank. The shareholders and signatories to the account are people related to Stella Oduah. Her cousin, who is a staff in her private company called SEA Petroleum and Gas Limited was a signatory into the account.

Another N1, 629,250,000 was paid into the account of Global offshore and Marine Limited out of which about N840m went to Crystal TV Limited. The shareholders and signatories to the account of Crystal TV are related to Stella Oduah and the cash was used to liquidate existing loan by Crystal TV.

“From the same N1.6b, about N780million was transferred to Tip Top Global Resources Ltd belonging to the family of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim where Anyim’s staff were discovered to be signatories to the account.”

Meanwhile, the EFCC has raised a panel to interrogate Sen. Oduah, who is scheduled to appear before the team on February 19th.

“We are set for the ex-Minister’s grilling, it is left to her to keep to the appointment date which she has fixed,” a top source added.

EFCC said: “Oduah was invited on three occasions to report for interview on the 13th June, 2017, 29th June 2017 and 13th November 2017 but she failed to honour any of the invitations.

Rather than appear to face a panel that was raised by the EFCC to interrogate her, Mrs. Oduah, through a letter dated January 5, 2018, informed the commission that she would honour the invite on January 29, 2018.

“The letter was duly acknowledged by the commission and just as the investigators were looking forward to her arrival Oduah played a fast one on the EFCC with another letter indicating that she would no longer be available on January 29.

“She cited an invitation by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, to accompany him to London where he was scheduled to deliver a lecture at the House of Commons on January 25.

“Oduah stated that her next convenient date to honour your invitation is 19th February, 2018.”

Politics / FINALLY! Ifeanyi Ubah Dumps PDP For APGA by NaijaNewsPapers: 6:00pm On Nov 04, 2017
One of Nigeria's oil moguls and the managing director of Capital Oil, Ifeanyi Ubah has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

Ubah in a formal declaration also declared his support for the present governor of Anambra state, Willie Obiano, who is the flag bearer of the APGA in the forthcoming Anambra gubernatorial election.

In a statement released on Saturday, November 4, Ubah said he dumped the PDP due to betrayals from friends and associates alike within the party.

He said: "As part of my vision and passion to advance the cause of my people, I have spent the last 5 years of my life making concerted efforts through human capital development and the rechanneling of my investments in oil and gas, media, sports, construction amongst others to my home state in a bid to empower the youths and contribute my quota to building a robust state economy. During this period, I have had laughs and good times with my people while also suffering betrayals and deceit from friends and allies alike.

Be that as it may, there is a limit to what I can achieve in my private capacity as it is my staunch belief that the number of lives one can touch while occupying the seat of power far outweighs the number that can be touched in one’s private capacity. I have been immensely blessed by God and as such, I do not consider politics as beneficial except that it provides me with the channel to which I can achieve my ultimate aim of sincere service to Ndi Anambra," Ubah said.

Sat, 04 Nov 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari has thrown an open challenge to his All Progressives Congress, APC, to free the space for other leaders of the ruling party who are eyeing his seat in the 2019 contest. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar leads the pack of APC chieftains who have shown interest in the next presidential election.

Exclusive details of discussions at the Tuesday’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting of APC obtained by Saturday Sun from three prominent members of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, who attended the meeting, show that the President threw the challenge soon after the well attended NEC meeting kicked off and motions were being moved for consideration by party leaders.

According to the details, the motion seeking an automatic second term ticket for Buhari was the first at the meeting and it was moved by a party chieftain from the North, simply identified as Alhaji Nosiru. Former Zamfara state governor, Senator Ahmad Sani Yerima, seconded the motion. At that point, it was gathered, some state party chairmen at the back of the hall were shouting ‘No vacancy in Aso Rock.’ President Buhari then raised his two hands and pleaded that the motion be stepped down to avoid closing the space for other aspirants who may be nursing presidential ambition on the platform of the party. “President Buhari intervened after the motion was moved and seconded. He said there will be no need for that because he didn’t want the democratic space closed. He said ‘let’s allow others to contest, that’s the beauty of democracy.’

“It was after the President’s intervention that Imo state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha in his capacity as the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum moved the second motion seeking to pass a vote of confidence on Buhari and the party’s leadership. Okorocha assured the President that while moving his motion that all the APC governors were ready to go to any length with Buhari and that he can rest assured they will give his aspiration full support and en-bloc”, a party leader from the Northwest who is also a member of national caucus of the APC stated.

My worry for Nigeria's democracy ' Wike
Sat, 04 Nov 2017
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, yesterday, led a delegation of top government functionaries to the Financial Times of London for business negotiation. During the visit, Governor Wike opened talks and secured the partnership of the world’s leading business publication in both promoting the State’s brand and its investment opportunities on the global stage. He was received on arrival at Financial Times’ headquarters in London by Mr. Mark Carwardine, Commercial Director, Africa and the Middle East and Larry Kenny, Sales Manager for Africa and the Middle East. Governor Wike sought and received the partnership of the Financial Times of London in driving business opportunities in Rivers. He also used the opportunity of the visit to ask for greater spotlight on Nigeria, due to the failing nature of her democracy, which, according to him, was undermining development and investment opportunities in the country. The governor stated that: “Another area of our interest has to do with the survival of democracy in Nigeria. We can’t talk about investment when we don’t have democracy. “Investments can only thrive when institutions are strengthened and not weakened. We believe that with what is happening in Nigeria today, if people don’t speak out, democracy may not survive”

In his response, Mr. Carwardine acknowledged the political challenges in Nigeria and thanked the governor for his visit and assured him of Financial Times’ collaboration with the State Government in promoting its investment opportunities and brand.

Governor Wike and the visiting delegation, after their meeting, were led on a tour of the corporate headquarters of the organization in Southwark Bridge, London. Members of the governor’s delegation were an elder statesman, Chief Emma Anyanwu, members of the House of Representatives, Ken Chikere and Betty Apiafi, former Minister of Sports, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, State Commissioner of Information and Communications, Barr. Emma Okah, Dr. A. J. Beredugo, Executive Assistant to the Governor and Mrs. Dornu Kobara.

WHY IGBO FEEL MARGINALISED 'Ex-Minister Odom
Sat, 04 Nov 2017
Chief Chuka Odom is a lawyer and former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. The Imo State-born politician in this interview with FRED EZEH opens up on a wide range of national issues.

You are a critical stakeholder in South East politics, what is your take on the recent military operation in the region, with regard to IPOB?

Let me preface my response by stating that I am an Igbo man, thus my response could be misinterpreted by some people as ethnic sentiment. But that, I could not help. I am opposed to the idea of a separate state of Biafra or any other sovereign seeking entity within the Nigerian state. A lot has been said on how Nigeria is not a state but mere “geographical expression”. However, no state was created and named by God. What it means is that all sovereign states emerged through some form of amalgamation, fusion or consensual union. Some developed countries like the United States no longer have sizeable indigenous population. So there is nothing unusual or extraordinary about the way we came into being as a nation. We have managed to live together for 57 years; we have survived civil war, military dictatorship, failed and corrupt civil governance. I believe we could overcome current challenges with time. That will pave the way for the emergence of new crop of leaders and efficient institutions. However, we must be patient with ourselves. Now to your question; Nnamdi Kanu and his co-agitators are by-products of failed, inept and corrupt leadership of the last 17 years. It is unfortunate that these youths revolt over the meaningless lives and future the Nigerian state has condemned them to. The Kanu phenomenon is more like the Nigerian youths giving the political class the “middle finger”. The response, mirrors the dysfunction of a system rooted in ethnic politics, and thus, we lost an opportunity to open a conversation with the youths, with a view to pulling them in, comforting and carrying them along in spite of their harsh rhetoric. They were the victims here. If not, how do you explain a situation where soldiers will shoot kids whose average age is 25, and whose crimes were protesting with Biafran flag? We have driven these youths further off from a buy-in to Nigeria state, and left deep psychological wound in their psyche. The military has achieved no feat by killing unarmed youths just to silence their voice. The ease with which this was done gives a lie to all the allegation that they had stockpiled arms ready to fight the Nigerian state. The security agencies knew these youths had no arm other than sticks and Biafran flags. But we could still get it right if we so desire. All we need is to open up a conversation with them. They deserve good and quality life as Nigerians. It is obviously not too late to invite the IPOB leader and other youth activists from other parts of Nigeria to a room and hear their complaints. The effort at dividing these youths who are united in their suffering, along ethnic and tribal lines is shameful.

What about South East governors and other political leaders, do you think they did enough?
