The founder of Reigners Bible Church, Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, Apostle Akan Weeks, has broken a long silence, by calling on his members not to crucify him for the collapsed building, which trapped scores to death‎.

Weeks reminded them that he was still their brother and pastor.

recalls that the consecration service of Akan Weeks as Bishop was in progress when the building caved in and killed over 200 worshipers.

Speaking to Planet FM radio from his hospital bed, the cleric said he was also seriously injured but that as soon as he was out of the hospital, he would pray with Nigerians.

“Please, this is not the time to crucify me; I’m still your brother, Reigners Church family, I’m still your pastor. The enthronement was cancelled completely and I am not interested.

“Please let us rise and pray. I really sympathise with the departed soul. Once I’m out of my hospital bed, I will come on air and we will pray together.”

Religion / Three People Killed During Stampede At T.B Joshua’s Synagogue Church by nairalandaddict: 9:05am On Dec 12, 2016

No less than three people have been reportedly killed during a stampede at T.B Joshua's Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Ikotun, Lagos.

According to The Punch, the incident happened early Saturday morning during SCOAN’s healing service, as worshippers trooped to see the General Overseer of the church, Prophet T.B Joshua.

An eyewitness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the stampede occurred around 4.30am.

He said: “It was the church’s annual deliverance and healing programme. Usually at this time, the church becomes a beehive of activities as people come in their thousands to see the prophet for miracles.

“People lodge in different hotels surrounding the church. And they all arrive at the church very early.

“There is a canopy on the premises where worshippers are screened before they see the man of God.

“However, on Saturday, after being screened, the crowd was much and they started struggling through the doorway to see the prophet. In the process, three people collapsed. They were rushed to the Isolo General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead.”

Two of the victims were identified as Emeka Okonkwo and Emmanuel Oherin from their phones and their families have been notified. The third victim is yet to be identified. Their corpses have been deposited in a morgue.

“Their families were immediately contacted and they identified them. The police from the Ikotun division were also contacted,” another source added.

A SCOAN official who was contacted by phone, however, denied the incident.

She said: “Nothing happened on the church premises yesterday. Nobody died. Nobody. Thank you.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, however, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.

“The story is true. Investigation is ongoing as we await the result of the autopsy. For now, we are treating the case as sudden and unnatural deaths,” she said.

Survivors: Eno Etim (left) and Emem Akpanitiat at the St. Luke’s General Hospital, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State...on Sunday.
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, on saturday ordered the arrest of the contractors and engineers, that constructed the Reigners Bible Church, which collapsed in Uyo on Saturday killing several people.

The Governor and his Deputy were attending the ordination service of Bishop Akan Weeks, when the building came down. He, however, escaped death.

One of Emmanuel’s personal assistants on media, Mr. Aniekeme Finbarr, told CNN’s Becky Anderson, that his principal gave the order on Sunday.

“They should be made to answer certain questions so that the state would be able to get to the root cause of the matter,” the Governor was quoted as saying.
Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has also called for a probe into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, he commiserated with the people of Akwa Ibom.

Saraki also called for “urgent and thorough investigation to determine both the remote and immediate causes of the building collapse.

“I believe that such an investigation, if sincerely done, will help us to guard against unnecessary waste of lives, injuries and damage to property in the future. My heart goes out to all the victims, the Christian community in Akwa Ibom State and the entire people of the state.”

Politics / Breaking: Church Collapses In Akwa Ibom, Many Feared Dead by nairalandaddict: 3:00pm On Dec 10, 2016

A church building has collapsed in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with many feared dead.

The Reigners Bible Church, located along Uyo Village Road, was filled to capacity because its pastor was being consecrated as a Bishop, when the tragedy occurred, witnesses said.

“Pastor Akan Week was being consecrated today so the programme was holding inside the Church when suddenly, the whole building collapsed,” one witness said.

The witness said the Church was being renovated and upgraded because of the expected high number of guests on Saturday.

“Many people are buried under the debris as emergency workers continue rescue exercise,” he said.

Governor Udom Emmanuel was expected to attend the occasion, but, sources said he was not at the church when it collapsed.

“The governor has gone to the scene and is presently there helping with the rescue,” a witness said.

Our sources said many victims have been taken to various hospitals and mortuaries in the town.

A source at one of the hospitals, Premier Hospital, said many of the injured were taken there and were receiving medical attention.

A police spokesperson who sounded emotional when contacted by phone, said she could not speak on the matter immediately.

“You need to be here to witness it, there is so much confusion,” she simply said.

The sad mother of the deceased National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member, Udeme Monday, has shared her grief, lamenting that she should have died in his place.

Monday, a First Class graduate of Petroleum Engineering from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, died in the Batch B orientation camping exercise in Zamfara State.

Following his demise, the faculty of Engineering students of the University, on Friday held a procession to honour ‘Uk Engine’ (as he was fondly called).

The students in the company of the Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Governor on students’ matters, Miss Otobong Aquila, had also visited the deceased’s compound at Etinan, Akwa Ibom State.

Monday’s mother, speaking with her son’s well wishers said, “Ukeme you promised me that when you return from NYSC that you will take total care of me and take me to the best hospital for treatment.

“Hmmmmmm I know you are not the one they are talking about. You’re not dead you only went for service I’m expecting you when your service year is over.”

She told guests who came to mourn with them to greet Ukeme and also inform him that the mother is expecting him back home sound and healthy, adding that her late son had promised that he would renovate their house as soon as he completed his studies.

The deceased’s grandmother also said, “Ukeme You promised that you will bring students to my burial and that the compound will not be enough to contain guest and well wishers.

“Oh Ukeme, I won’t be able to stay alive and see you lowered six feet below the ground. Ooooooo death I was the one that was supposed to die.”

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has tendered unreserved apology to President Muhammadu Buhari, for criticizing his congratulatory message to Gambian President-elect, Adama Barrow.

Buhari had congratulated Barrow, for his victory over incumbent Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh, at the poll.

The Nobel Laureate thought Jammeh had won and went ahead to criticize Buhari for his message.

He had said at the time: “President Buhari is congratulating the president-elect of Gambia, that lunatic who makes his citizens undergo hallucinogenic tests to prove that they are not witches on his farm.

“Please help me beg President Buhari, I don’t say he shouldn’t congratulate Trump because there is no way one can avoid Trump but you can avoid petty little dictators like Jammeh of Gambia who is the opposite of everything one would expect of the true African leader for his or he citizens. Please President Buhari, restrict yourself to those you absolutely have to congratulate.”

Soyinka has now realized his mistakes and promptly tendered an apology.

[b] “Just before setting off for my media chat at Freedom Park, I was handed a Sunday newspaper with a comment on the recently concluded Gambian Presidential elections. I totally misheard the comment and thought that ex-President Jammeh had again succeeded in manipulating the votes to remain on the continent’s ‘sit-tight’ roll of dishonour,” he said.

“It turned out that I had obtained the wrong picture. The torturer and notorious administrator of hallucinogenic broths to citizens had been dethroned. I therefore take back my criticism of Nigeria’s message of congratulations.
“Let the entire West African sub-region and indeed the entire continent rejoice in the overthrow of the monatrocity who had sworn to rule for a billion years, a throw-back autocrat with delusions of eternal power who casually tossed opposition in dungeons and threw the keys away. It is now time to make Yahweh answer for his twenty-two years of boastful misrule and crimes against humanity.

“Once again, my apologies for the miscommunication. I rejoice with the long-suffering citizens of Gambia, encourage the rehabilitation of that land strip, and recovery of its existence in full liberty, freed of fear, and restored to dignity as part of the sentient species.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uged to stakeholders in Rivers to desist from instigating violence ahead of the state forthcoming re-run elections.

Re-run elections in Rivers for various seats in the National and the state House of Assembly are scheduled for Dec 10.

INEC in a statement signed Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, on Sunday in Abuja urged all political parties and their supporters to abide by all the extant laws governing the electoral process.

“The Commission hereby restates its determination to conclude the elections in Rivers in a free, fair, and transparent manner on the said Saturday, Dec 10.

“The recent Edo and Ondo governorship elections eloquently speak of the feat that can be achieved if all stakeholders do the needful.

“However, the Commission condemns, in very strong terms, the relentless false allegations, provocative and dangerous comments being made by some political actors, especially the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Nyesom Wike against the Commission.’’

Oyekanmi warned that such allegations were capable of inciting people to commit violent acts that could derail the election.

“We appeal to stakeholders to henceforth refrain from making pronouncements that could either overheat the state or instigate their followers to violence.

“We wish to reassure all Nigerians that the Commission will remain impartial and committed to conducting credible, fair and transparent elections at all times.”

Oyekanmi recalled that in obedience to court orders resulting from disputes over the 2015 General Elections, INEC conducted re-run elections in the state on March 19.

He said that unfortunately, the outbreak of violence forced the commission to suspend the exercise.

“At the time the elections were suspended, voting had ended in certain constituencies with the winners declared. Voting had also been concluded in some areas but collation of results had not been completed.

“Besides, certain unauthorised persons had put the Commission’s officials under duress to declare results at some locations, while balloting did not take place at all in others,’’ he said.

Oyekanmi said in an effort to conclude the elections, the Commission held a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja on June 30, where it was agreed that the elections be held on July, 30.

He added that, however, following persistent inflammatory comments by political actors in the state, there was an arson attack on the Commission’s office at Khana Local Government Area on July 26, by unknown persons.

Oyekanmi said that as a result of the attack and credible security reports, it became impossible to hold the elections as planned.

“After months of wide consultations with stakeholders aimed at creating a conducive atmosphere, the Commission announced on Nov. 3 that the elections would hold on Saturday Dec. 10.”

We Stopped School Feeding Because Federal Government Has Not Paid What they Promised Us – el-Rufai

Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai in a recent interview with journalists in Kaduna, gave account of his stewardship so far, especially the free feeding programme and why he couldn’t continue with the programme. Excerpts:

Why did you stop free feeding in schools?
Part of the packages of the reforms that we introduced in education includes not only the free basic education for nine years, but the primary school feeding programme. It was costing us N1.1 billion a month and we believe in it. We felt that even if you make education free, if a child cannot get pocket money to eat while in school, the parents may decide it is better to withdraw him or her from school. But we didn’t want that. This is why we introduced this programme. For the 1.8 million children in schools in Kaduna, this is what we were spending.
We were encouraged to start the programme because the office of the Vice President, under the Social Investment Programme, promised to subsidise 60 per cent of the cost of the programme. So, we started spending our money in the expectation of being reimbursed. We have spent, nearly N8 billion on this programme this year and the office of the Vice President is supposed to pay us back in the region of N6 billion to N7 billion.
Since we made education free, the enrollment in class one was huge. We have not been paid this money. The amount we earmarked for the programme in the 2016 budget has been exhausted. So, we cannot continue with the programme. We are expecting the reimbursement from the office of the vice president. We have been assured over and over that we would be reimbursed. But we didn’t think that we had the resources to continue without that reimbursement. We had exhausted what we budgeted for it. We will do well in education generally. I cannot prove it because it takes time before any investment in education matures. But I can give you some statistics to show that we are doing well.

Politics / Ben Ayade May Defect To APC Soon, As He Meets Kwankwaso, Okorocha, Obaseki by nairalandaddict: 5:51am On Dec 05, 2016
Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has met with bigwigs of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the weekend.

The meeting, which started during the thanksgiving ceremony organised by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Usani Uguru Usani, in Calabar, was believed to have focused on the governor’s political future.

A former senate leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, a former minister of defence and presidential aspirant, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, governors Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, who graced the occasion, were said to have convinced Ayade to leave the PDP for the APC.

Later, Ayade drove with them and other top military brass that also graced the event in large numbers to an undisclosed location where Okorocha and other APC leaders were said to have got his firm commitment.

Speculations have been rife over Ayade’s secret ambition to cross over to the APC, having hobnobbed with key national leaders of the party few months after he was sworn in.

He has also been showering encomiums on President Muhammadu Buhari whom he had criticised before his victory in the last presidential election.

But in a swift reaction, Ayade’s media aide dismissed the insinuation that the governor was planning to move from the PDP.

Christian Ita, chief press secretary to Ayade, said the governor was just playing the role of a good host to the array of political, military and business leaders that thronged Calabar to honour a prominent son of the state.

“It is not true that the discussion our governor had with the APC leaders had anything to do with leaving the PDP for the APC,” said Ita.

Okorocha, who had visited the state and met Ayade previously over same issue, had commended the governor for having the blessing of God with the appointment of his “sons” into key national positions.

Remarking, Usani commended those who honoured his invitation and described them as his close friends. He stated that hatred for one another was the key reason for underdevelopment of Cross River State.

Culture / Your Royal Rascality Deserves No Response, Ooni Blasts Olugbo by nairalandaddict: 5:38am On Dec 05, 2016
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has shown displeasure in the comments of Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Obateru Akinruntan, that Moremi Ajasoro was a traitor and should not be celebrated.

Oba Ogunwusi said this on Sunday in a statement issued on his behalf by the Director of Public Affairs. Ooni’s Palace, Mr. Moses Olafare, in reaction to the statement issued on behalf of the Olugbo by the Olugbo-in-Council.

The monarch said it was absurd for anyone to describe Moremi, who according to him, used her power to liberate her people from the incessant invasion of some faceless terrorist, as a traitor.

The statement read, “The attention of Ile-Oodua has been drawn to a statement credited to Oba Frederick Akinruntan through the Olugbo-in-Council berating the people of Ile-Ife for celebrating Moremi Ajasoro as a heroine and goddess of liberty.

“This outburst of Olugbo can only be viewed by the well meaning people as a mere royal rascality and a pitiable act of absurdity that doesn’t deserve serious attention by serious minded people.

“How on earth should a Yoruba king refer to Moremi as a traitor just because she used her power of a woman to liberate her people from incessant invasions by some faceless terrorists?

“While we remain very proud of the great queen Moremi Ajasoro, a brave woman who sacrificed her only son Oluorogbo for the victory of her people over the faceless terrorists who used to incessantly raid Ife markets, we will not dignify this rascality of royalty with an expected response as we are not ready for any useless supremacy battle incapable of taking Yoruba to a greater height.”

The Ooni urged Yoruba people and all lovers of peace to ignore the “reckless statement” capable of dividing the people further especially at the moment he (Oba Ogunwusi ) was working to unite the entire Yoruba race and the monarchs.

He said he was not in any supremacy battle with anyone and was not interested in engaging in such a worthless battle because he had been busy mending fences and working to bring all Yoruba people together since about a year ago he ascended the throne of his forefathers.

“It is a pity that at this time when everybody is lucidly tired of retrogressive royal discord generally agreed to have colossally hindered our pace of progress as a people of common heritage politically and socio-economically, the Olugbo who claims to be the chairman of Yoruba Obas Committee on Peace and Reconciliation has suddenly without a deep knowledge of Yoruba history woken up to see royal controversy as the only tool for cheap publicity.

“Kabiyesi Ooni is not interested in taking issues with Oba Akinruntan or anyone on any matter that can jeopardise his peace and unity project which is already making impact in so many sectors,” he added.

Governor Ayade of Cross River revealed that his wife as a virgin when they married, which is the pride of Africans, who value the virtues of chastity.

Ayade made the declaration in Calabar, while delivering a lecture on the HIV/AIDS scourge to mark the 2016 World Aids Day, said the greatest gift any woman could possibly hand to her husband was to present her body as a virgin to him.

He said: “I should say to the teenagers here today that when somebody leads you to the altar, at the end of that day he should be glad to say I married my wife a virgin.”

The governor stated that young people easily gave in to sex due to financial inducement, peer pressure and influence of international movies and believed that with the use of condom they were secure from HIV, which in most cases was not full-proof protection against the pandemic.

According to the governor, “when people use condom, they think they are safe which is the major cause of infection because evidence abound that the use of condom does not provide total protection against HIV/AIDS since the condom itself has small holes that are 0.05 wider than microbes, which makes HIV virus to pass successfully.”

Monday, was a First Class graduate of Petroleum Engineering from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

He died yesterday after reportedly suffering from Diarrhoea.

Monday is the third corps member to die in a few weeks. A female corps member, Elechi Chiyerom died in the Bayelsa camp while another female corps member, Oladepo Ifedolapo also died in Kano camp.

The information was shared on Facebook by the deceased friend, Victor Jerry Emah, regretting not doing enough to help his friend when he said he didn’t want to go to Zamfara camp.

Emah wrote, “I should have known… I should have paid more attention to what you were saying. Your body, spirit and soul rejected that posting… I should have had the powers to relocate you. I should have listened closely… All is not well Ukeme Monday don’t tell me that!” Another friend of Monday, Immo Pat took to his Instagram page to mourn his friend as he gave a brief timeline of events before Monday’s death.

He wrote, “On November 21, l helped you check your state of deployment online.

“November 22, we went to Itam market to buy our kits for the orientation exercise.

“November 23, we all departed Uyo to our respective camps, and on December 1, I got the sad news that you’re no more. What a ruthless you world?

“Ikpa, whatever reason that made you leave this world so soon is unfair.

“Why now, but why now? After all the stress and sleepless nights, we went through together for 5 years. You made a First class. You were overall Best in the ’10 engineering class.

You won about four scholarships; you organized free tutorials for junior colleagues and even your own mates.

“I really don’t have words to express how I felt when I heard the news about your untimely demise and I really can’t understand why God allowed this one to happen.

“Brotherly, though you are gone, I know your legacies and the impact you created will forever be remembered.

Rest On Ukeme Monday. It is well. God knows best.”

Politics / Breaking: Court Ask Buhari To Free Shiite Leader El-zakzaky by nairalandaddict: 1:50pm On Dec 02, 2016
The federal high court in Abuja today, 2 November,2016, ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to release Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), as well as members of his family.

Zakzaky has been in DSS custody since December 2015 when IMN members, also known as Shi’ites, clashed with Nigerian army in Zaria, Kaduna state.

The DSS said that the Shi’ia leader was being held for his own protection.

But the Shi’ites continued demanding for his release, saying the continuous detention of El-Zakzaky was against their fundamental human rights enshrined in the 1999 constitution as amended.

At the court on Friday, Gabriel Kolawole, the judge, wondered what part of the law allows a person to be held in custody for his own protection.

“The decision to hold the applicant and his wife for their safety is based on which law? he asked.

“I have not been shown any incident report or any complain lodged by residents around the neighbourhood that the applicant has become a nuisance to his neighbourhood.”

He then ordered the DSS to release Zakzaky to police custody.

The judge said within 45 days, the government should release Zakzaky and his family to the police who would guard them at a safe place.

He further awarded N50 million to him and his wife.

Professor Wole Soyinka has abandoned US because of Donald Trump
Renowned Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has fulfilled his vow to destroy his US residency green card.

The award-winning author said on Thursday, December 1 that he has fulfilled his earlier pledge to destroy his residency permit and abandon the United States if Donald Trump won the presidential election.

“I have already done it, I have disengaged (from the United States). I have done what I said I would do.

“I had a horror of what is to come with Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and I have relocated, and I’m back to where I have always been,”
BBC quoted Soyinka as saying at an education conference at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.

The prolific playwright, novelist and poet won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986 and has been a regular teacher at US universities including Harvard, Cornell and Yale.

At the same time he said he would not discourage others from applying for a green card.

“It’s useful in many ways. I wouldn’t for one single moment discourage any Nigerians or anybody from acquiring a green card… but I have had enough of it,” he said.

A Facebook user recently posted a picture showing someone that appears to be Prof Wole Soyinka stowing his bags in the overhead carriage of a plane on his return to Nigeria just after the US elections
Soyinka, one of Africa’s most famous writers and rights activists, was jailed in 1967 for 22 months during Nigeria’s civil war.

He was reported to have recently completed a term as scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs.

Politics / See The Reason Why Buhari Cancelled Zahra's Wedding - by nairalandaddict: 2:17pm On Dec 01, 2016
The News filtered in yesterday that Zahra Buhari and Ahmed Indimi most andticipated wedding has been postponed indefinitely.

It is believed that this it was President Buhari himself who called the wedding to a halt. here are three reasons why he could have made such a drastic decision:

1. The media did too much

The media has a way of sensationalizing things and blowing it out of proportion. While this is the norm, Buhari is not one to crave or appreciate excessive media attention (probably since the other room drama) so he might have postponed it to put the media off track so the wedding will hold privately.

2. He wants to see what else Indimi has to offer

Ahmed Indimi and Zahra Buhari
Ahmed Indimi seems to have it all in terms of financial success. He sent her about 30 customized Louis Vuitton (LV) designer bags with gifts during their introduction.

Buhari may want to see what is beneath the surface of his flamboyant exterior and if he truly will make a great husband.

3. Zahra is having second thoughts

Zahra is very smart and well-educated but she is not above mistakes. Imagine if she woke up one day and questioned is Ahmed is truly the one for her and voiced her thoughts to her father.

Buhari is president but he is also a loving father and he may just postponed the wedding for her to truly makeup her mind.
