Programming / Re: Which Programming Language Is Best For Building An Hospital Management Software by nairawall: 6:35am On Mar 29, 2013
I am asking for the mode of transportation not the type of car as you insinuated.

The only important idea somebody gave on this thread has been hidden by the mod. He suggested WinDev. I have been reading a lot about WinDev and it sounds a bit interesting but the french thing and the very small community discouraged me.

I am coming from a procedural/modular programming background. I also learn very fast so I wanted a language I can learn quickly to develop the app.

I was misled some time ago to learn Python, as some persons on this forum suggested it could be for desktop app development.

After several weeks of engaging python, I discover it lacks security because you code can easily be accessed by any one using the desktop application.

I am at the moment considering VB.Net.
Programming / VB.NET Vs Windev - Which Is Faster & Better by nairawall: 1:16pm On Mar 28, 2013
I put the question in the heading. There is a lot of hype going on for WinDev being faster 10x than VB.NET for developing desktop, mobile and web applications.

How true is this?

biolabee:

Nice one but say i am interested in holding for capital appreciation, choosing a select 2-4 stocks and building up my portfolio
with annual injections,,

If you ar holding US stocks for capital appreciation then u are looking to buy and hold blue chip stocks.

The challenge with established companies is that they don't appreciate but oscillate. Another danger is that they are easily swayed by legal issues. Take for example Facebook shares (NYSE: FB), it got listed at a price above $40 but because a minor disclosure issue which led to some legal suits, FB shares fell from over $40 to about $16. It is still struggling to get back to its initial listing price.

It may take up to a year or two to get there given their current structure.

When buying US stocks to hold for capital appreciation, the emphasis should be on buying close to the stocks 52weeks low. Also you must keep tab on the companies quarterly earnings to avoid buying a companies stock which is sinking.

Investment / Re: How To Buy Stocks From Foreign Countries? by nairawall: 3:09pm On Mar 24, 2013
Stock trading carries a substantial amount of risk and you can lose all your investment if you don't know what you are doing.

Buying and holding US is usually not the best option for Nigerian traders because most banks in Nigeria may not regard it as assets or collateral for loans due to several reasons I will highlight later.

Trading US stocks primary for profit taking is the best choice for Nigerians. Short term trading is the way to go. You simply hold a stock position for like a month or two and then sell to take profit.

The great advantage of US stocks is their transparent nature. There are a lot of market data to do ur analysis. You have proper information to base your market decision on. Unlike the Nigeria market which is shredded in secrecy.

For starters, the blue chips are the best stocks to buy. Take for example microsft corp (MSFT), this stock ranges. It oscillate within $31 to $20 creating huge opportunities for short term positions and profits.

For the risk takers or traders coming from a forex background, the penny stocks or microchips are their attraction because the movement is a bit similar to currencies. You can see a penny stock doing a price movement of over 300% in a single trading day. Penny stocks carry greater risk.

Politics / GEJ Presidential Pardon - Why All The Noise? by nairawall: 1:48pm On Mar 13, 2013
I am not a strong supporter of GEJ but I am a bit surprise when everyone got so upset about the state pardoned granted Alamieseigha, EX VP and others.

Ribadu and El Rufai ran from the law under gentle honest Yar'Adua. The North pressured GEJ not to prosecute their sons. GEJ obliged. Everybody silent. Escaped wanted man ran for Prez. Alamieseigha has served his punishment unlike the others. GEJ pardons him. Wahala! Why is there pardon in ur constitution if it is not to be used? Do u pardon Saints or sinners? So what's the probs?
Business / Overhead Walks On Two Legs by nairawall: 12:13pm On Mar 13, 2013
This saying completely changed my entire impression of employing people for a tech startup.

Most of us including me think that if we employ more hands we would move the business faster and increase revenue but sadly this is not really true. Most startups need more time and commitment to succeed. If you don't have a venture capitalist funding you, then it is usually best you do it yourself until the business becomes profitable enough to employ more hands.

This is the singular reason Dealfish.com.ng and Mocality.com.ng couldn't survive the Nigeria market. It is also reason why Nairalist.com couldn't keep going even when the prospect was there.

It's always harder to get rid of employees than it is to employ them. Business is not mathematics where 1 + 2 = 3.

Mobsync:

Is this supposed to be a suggestion? Me thinks its a bad idea. Personally, it would be better if he gets some program similar to Google adsence and at the same time, save some ads space to sell directly.

After going through the link Seun posted, I had to say my last suggestion is truly a bad idea. Setting up Nairaland as a proper business with office and staff may not be the right thing for Nairaland.com right now because that would be more overheads and also given the fact that the website's revenue sources are still not very stable.

But still, seun need to make Nairaland advertising program less expensive and more friendly.

Webmasters / Re: Nairaland Adverts Slowing by nairawall: 10:00am On Mar 13, 2013
My suggestion is for seun to setup this huge monumental project (Nairaland) as a proper company with a proper office and staffing. He can employ a mix tech professionals from within Nigeria and also outside Nigeria.

I was shocked when I contacted Nairaland.com that I wanted to advertise, to my amazement, seun personally wrote me and the account I was asked to pay into was a personal account.

A website this large and already about coming within the first 1,000 websites in the world should have a proper management and team.

Anyway, it is the Nigeria way of doing things as usual.
Webmasters / Most Nigerian Website Lacks Professionalism by nairawall: 4:05pm On Mar 12, 2013
Most website developed by Nigerians lacks professionalism. They are best for testing your ideas and building startup cash not really for full scale launch.

I say this because most websites developed by Nigerians do not support the international coding structure and documentation. An already developed website done by most Nigerians when outsourced to foreign developers for further development usually end up being completely redesigned from the scratch.

skyhighweb: i still dey wait hoping e changes his system of ad, the price is too much noni.

I am very sure seun is working on something for all advertisers. I know him as somebody that is very innovative and proactive.

I see the current advertising program as a reactive measure taken because of the sudden shift from the normal advertising (Google Adsense) nairaland has always used.
Webmasters / Nairaland Adverts Slowing by nairawall: 1:51pm On Mar 11, 2013
I have noticed very few advertisers on the new nairaland ads.

I guess NL needs a robust advertising technology where users can track their ads stats and also this technology should be able to enable users to advertise for as little as $10.

Even big portals like facebook and google don't have a cap on how much you should spend monthly on ads. Advertising cost should be very flexible and intuitive to encourage participation. Without this, any advertising program will find it difficult to succeed.

Webmasters / Re: Help With This Layout And Implementation by nairawall: 2:39pm On Feb 19, 2013
What you just listed are special characters or symbols. They are not images.

The images on the layout the OP posted are not HTML special characters or symbols. It is very obvious they are not images.

If really the images you listed below are part of the CSS definition, I wouldn't mind learning about the attributes that generated them. Just listing some images and claiming they were generated in CSS is not enough.
Webmasters / Re: Need A Webmaster With Programming To Work On A Project With Me For My Client by nairawall: 1:36pm On Feb 19, 2013
You won't get a professional developer that easily.

You can give more incite what the project entails and other programmers and developers can help you out by contributing codes snippets.

GraphicsPlus:

2) Those icons are not images.

They are bunch of CSS3 "button icons without images".
There are codes responsible for those icons.
For instance, the bulb icon was generated with this:
.divclass::before {
content: '\2600';
{

Then the font-size was increased, and displayed as inline-block.
It's quite fun.

You are really funny!!!

Guess you are new to CSS and HTML, if not can you please tell which HTML Tag or CSS attribute create light bulbs and others.

The interface is quite simple and straightforward.

Do you want the CSS written here?
Business / Nigeria Next President 2015 Business Idea by nairawall: 1:41pm On Feb 18, 2013
Nigeria Next President 2015 Business Idea.

The population of Nigeria is a tremendous advantage for people who understand the power of numbers. Nigeria population is currently above 200million people and creating a service or product that can reach just a million Nigeria will certainly make the investor a lot of revenue.

There is so much propaganda and underground politicking going on in Nigeria concerning who becomes the next president of Nigeria come 2015. An opinion poll like the Nigeria Next President 2015 will be a hit and many stake holders and political parties will ultimately want to lay their hands on the database used for the polls.

The Nigeria Next President 2015 will be run through a premium short code service where Nigeria can nominate and vote for their candidate of choice using their mobile phones. The promotion of this project will be centered on social media and also targeted viral marketing media. The system will be able to record the phone numbers, names and geopolitical location of all Nigeria citizens who voted.

Revenue Forecast

The opinion poll will use a premium short code to determine the strong candidate for the next Nigeria presidential election 2015. Each message(vote) sent to this short code may cost somewhere around N20 - N50.

If multiple votes are allowed, vote count should far exceed 1million and that should generate over N50million in revenue.

Capital Outlay

Alternative 1:
Shared Short Code = N100,000
Short Application Development = N100,000
Monthly Short Fee = N10,000 (pay for 3months) = N30,000

Advertisement & Promotion = N100,000

Total Capital = N330,000

Alternative 2:
Dedicated Short Code = N250,000
Short Application Development = N100,000
Monthly Short Fee = N10,000 (pay for 3months) = N30,000
Advertisement & Promotion = N100,000

Total Capital = N480,000

Anyone interested in this business idea can contact me on 08067630525 or wmg2009@gmail.com

Note:
Every business comes with a certain amount of risk and may not be suitable for everybody.

Webmasters / Re: Please Whats The Concept Of Long Code? by nairawall: 1:57am On Feb 13, 2013
Long codes are hosted in SIM farms and the technology is quite similar to short code. They are cheap to acquire and could be a very source of testing your short applications during development.

I usually design with long code and after development, I simply edit the long code to the client's short code.
