Politics / Apc Is Mischievous And Totally Uninformed!-blasts Reuben Abati. by NewsAlert: 1:06pm On Aug 24, 2014
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, of playing politics with the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction. The presidential spokesman who said this during an interview with Punch also described claims credited to the APC that the $1bn loan the President is seeking to fight Boko Haram is actually meant for his 2015 election campaign as “irresponsible”. Reuben Abati also dismissed reports that the emergency rule has not been able to curb violence in some of the affected states,”President Jonathan has declared a state of emergency about three times now in the affected areas. By the second time the declaration was made, the scope of the terror reduced. Normalcy returned to the greater part of Adamawa and Yobe states.
At a time, all three states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa were in turmoil almost on a weekly basis. But that reduced because the security forces went in more vigorously and aggressively to the extent that the curfew that had been imposed by the state governments was eventually Lifted and all the markets and offices that had been shut were reopened.” Abati listed transport, infrastructure, education, economy, job creation, oil and gas, agriculture, trade and investment, foreign relations, governance as the President’s achievements that will merit him a second term.
Excerpt from the interview below:

How confident are you that Nigeria will win the current war against terror?
I am very confident that Nigeria will win the war against terror because it is not something that we can live with. Terror is evil and a country or a government cannot elect to live with evil. Terrorism is an assault against our common humanity and no government or country can afford to tolerate the kind of crimes against humanity and the kind of assault against human freedom that terrorism represents.

That is why the position of the President is that no matter how long it takes, whatever it takes, the war against terror must be won. This is because if we don’t win the war against terror, it will be difficult for us to achieve our development objectives.

Why has emergency rule failed to stop violence in the affected states, especially in Borno?
That is not true. The declaration of a state of emergency has been most useful. It is important to understand what a state of emergency is. Under emergency rule, the security forces are given greater scope to be able to deal with a threat situation. Certain restrictions under the constitution will be lifted so that the security forces will have greater latitude to be able to cover the entire territory.
President Jonathan has declared a state of emergency about three times now in the affected areas. By the second time the declaration was made, the scope of the terror reduced. Normalcy returned to the greater part of Adamawa and Yobe states. At a time, all three states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa were in turmoil almost on a weekly basis. But that reduced because the security forces went in more vigorously and aggressively to the extent that the curfew that had been imposed by the state governments was eventually Iifted and all the markets and offices that had been shut were reopened.
The unfortunate thing is that by April this year, the insurgents came back. It was like they retreated and regrouped. By that time, they had been restricted to only a part of Borno State from where they would come out, make incursions, and then disappear. Even with what we are witnessing now, government is again confronting them.
In the last one month, there have been reports of their intelligence chiefs being captured. There have been reports of their armouries being uncovered and many of their operatives being arrested. All these are parts of the operation to get the abducted Chibok girls back and break the hold of terrorists on the limited areas where they are still operating.
So it will not be fair to say that the state of emergency is not succeeding. The state of emergency has helped to deepen government operations, and convey a strong signal to the terrorists about government’s determination.
What is your reaction to the claim by the APC that the $1bn loan the President is seeking to fight Boko Haram is actually meant for 2015 election campaign?
The APC is misinformed, mischievous and that statement by the party is totally irresponsible. After the April 14 abduction of the girls, one of the first things the President did was to summon an expanded National Security Council meeting to which the governors were invited. He also subsequently called a Council of State meeting. At both meetings, the resolution by all the parties present was that the issue of terror is beyond politics and that it requires a bipartisan approach, that nobody should play politics with it because human lives are involved.
During the press briefing after one of those meetings, one of the APC governors was one of the spokespersons. He himself made it clear that that was what they agreed on. But after that meeting, what did the APC do? They went back to begin to play politics with the abduction of the girls and with terrorism. That is why I say that they are dishonest by playing politics with something that requires collective action and support. What government requires in its efforts is support and solidarity, not the kind of politics that APC is bringing into it.
The second leg of it is that the National Assembly is made up of people from every political party. The message that is out there from the National Assembly is that as a body, the assembly stands solidly behind President Jonathan in the prosecution of the war against terror.
On this issue of the $1bn which is to be used to further strengthen the security forces, the National Assembly has also said that the objective of the Federal Government is consistent with its own resolution that whatever is necessary must be provided to strengthen the fight against terror. That National Assembly is made up of every political party. And it agrees in principle that the war against terror must be prosecuted vigorously.
So if the APC secretariat is saying a different thing, to the best of my knowledge, that is not the position of the National Assembly which has the oversight responsibility to approve the loan.

Talking about the abducted Chibok girls, they have been in captivity for over 100 days. How long will their parents continue to wait for them to be reunited with their children?

President Jonathan met recently with the parents of the abducted girls, the girls that managed to escape as well as opinion and community leaders from the affected area. The President made it very clear to the parents that government is working very hard and security forces are also working very hard to ensure that the girls are brought back home.
Government’s priority is however not haste. Government’s priority is to ensure that these girls are brought back home safely. If there is anything that may jeopardise the operation, or result in the massacre of those girls, government will rather tread on the side of caution until it is able to make sure that those girls can be rescued safely.
The thing to note is that these same terrorists have boasted that if there is any kind of assault on them in a way they feel uncomfortable with, they will not hesitate to massacre the girls. We all want the girls back home safely; there is no question about that.

What would the President list as his achievements to merit second term?

I have already talked about the achievements of his performance-driven administration in various sectors of the economy: transport, infrastructure, education, economy, job creation, oil and gas, agriculture, trade and investment, foreign relations, governance and so on. President Jonathan promised Nigerians in 2011 that he will transform their lives positively and move this country ahead. He has kept that promise, he is still keeping it and he has chosen to remain focused on service delivery. He has not yet made any categorical statement about 2015, other than that when the time comes, he will do so.

Health / Nigerian Celebrities Eulogize Dr. Adadevoh For Her Bravery by NewsAlert: 10:21am On Aug 20, 2014
Nigerian celebrities have continued to react to the death of Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh, the consultant physician, who died on Tuesday after contracting the Ebola Virus from the late Patrick Sawyer.Different celebrities have written their own tributes on the doctor who saved the country from the Ebola epidemic by refusing to cave in to the pressure by the Liberian Embassy to allow Patrick Sawyer leave the hospital.

While some say Nigeria should sanction the United States, others stated that the Federal government should give the late doctor a posthumous national award.Controversial Actress, Halima Abubaka posted on Instagram thus,
“Rip brave woman. Hmmm and the doctor slept.. Rip ma#EbolaAwareness# victim#sad”

Singer Lynxx also wrote

“I’m beyond sad…. Speechless to say the least… This isn’t someone I heard about through the news but a Friends Mum I met almost 20 years ago. I cant even fathom how he / his family feels! But God would be your strength through this trying time! Your death would not be in vain for you stood up to fight for the world, not just your country! May The Good Lord rest your gentle soul in Jesus name! Amen!”

Actress Rita Dominic posted on Instagram
“A Hero or Heroine refers to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness display courage and the will for self-sacrifice.. That is, heroism-for some greater good of all humanity.. Rest In Peace, Dr AMEYO ADADEVOH..”
Singer, Weird MC tweeted
“Dr Adadevoh Thank you ….Fly like an Eagle….Thanks ever so much.”
Actress Stella Damasus wrote

“Kind and beautiful Dr Ameyo Adadevoh stood her ground to protect Nigeria. She refused to allow Mr. sawyer leave first consultants hospital even when the Liberian Ambassador pressured her to release him. Imagine what would have happened if she had let him go. Ebola would have been more widespread than what we are dealing with now. She died this evening and I strongly believe she deserves a national posthumous award. The Cross River state government should honour this woman because Dr. sawyer was supposed to attend a seminar in Calabar.

If she had not stopped him from going there, what do you think would have happened to the people of Cross River?
Speaking further, Stella shared a photo of the late Doctor and wrote
“I know that since this is not a glamorous picture of me, it will not get many views. It shows how vain and insensitive a lot of us have become. I really want to see how many reports this will get and how many people will talk about it. Is she going to be a forgotten case like the fuel subsidy, the child marriage issue, or the Chibok girls? Why do we easily move from one thing to the other without seeing these issues through till we get results?”
Soundsaltan had this to also say to the departed heroine,
Even A president wouldn't have done it! Appreciate , your life . I personaly pray for a wonderful eternal rest in Paradise ! R.i.p Dr Ameyo

Tough love.

For a few years, whenever actress/singer Tonto Dikeh stepped on the red carpet, you would know she was wearing a piece by Toyin Lawani of Tiannah Styling.

Tonto and Toyin were always spotted together at parties and private events. Fast forward to 2013, Tonto moved on to a new stylist – Jeremiah Ogbodo (Swanky Signatures Styling).

The two who clearly don’t have tea or coffee together anymore, took to Instagram to speak against each other.

The drama all started after Tonto Dikeh posted a photo of herself at a party years ago, and gave credit to her new stylist instead of Toyin.

A not-so-happy Toyin posted multiple images of all the times she styled Tonto and said:

Politics / Corp Members Abandon Sick Colleague In Ekiti For Fear Of Ebola Virus. by NewsAlert: 2:45pm On Aug 17, 2014
Corps members at the orientation camp at Ise/Emure Ekiti, deserted their colleague who slumped on Friday for fear he was infected with the deadly Ebola virus.

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Olusola Fasuba who spoke at an awareness forum in Ado-Ekiti, following speculations in the state that Ebola virus had hit some towns, PM News reports.

Olusola dispelled rumours that the youth corps member had contracted Ebola, saying he was only suffering of chronic fever.

According to him, when he got report of the incident, he quickly swung into action, making sure the sick boy received immediate attention from a team of health workers. A sample of his blood was also sent to Lagos and the results came out negative to Ebola virus.

He said: “The corps member has been taken away from the camp and is currently being kept at our isolated centre located within Oba Adejugbe General Hospital, Ado-Ekiti. As I speak, I assure residents that the health of the boy in question is already improving, while he continues to show signs of good health far from Ebola.”
He therefore advised residents not to mistake common ailments, such as chronic fever for the dreaded Ebola virus, while also warning rumour mongers to desist from spreading false information that could mislead or scare people, saying that government had taken pro-active measures to prevent the virus from spreading to the state.
Following the outbreak of Ebola in Nigeria, the government and other institutions have been making efforts to curb its spread. The Catholic diocese of Makurdi, Benue made it known recently that due to Ebola outbreak in the country, faithfuls are not allowed to bring corpse of relatives to church for funeral mass any more.

Also, Brig Gen Johnson Olawumi, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), announced the suspension of orientation programme of the 2014 Batch ‘B’ corps members in six states following the outbreak of Ebola in the country.

TV/Movies / Nollywood! A Gateway To Prostitution! --- Blessing Effiom Egbe by NewsAlert: 11:32am On Aug 16, 2014
"Two Brides And A Baby" movie producer Blessing Effiom Egbe is at it again and this time, the actress seems tired with the alleged high level of immorality and promiscuous activities in Nollywood.
Blessing, who is known for usually airing her opinion on serious situations in the movie industry, took to her Twitter handle Friday morning to share her deepest thoughts on what we describe as the "ills of Nollywood".
She exploded:
"Acting is now the gateway to prostitution. People will do anything to have their faces on the screen because market go come and true true, market plenty."
The "Lekki Wives" producer may not be the only one who shares this view on the current situation in the Nigerian movie industry. Other stars like Charles Novia have also cried for help on why young girls and boys have to sell their bodies for movie roles as well as called out movie makers who ask for sex before creating the cast.
Another close source claims that in the East, upcoming actresses and actors are being forced to pay movie producers to get movie roles. Plus, they also have to take care of hotel bills, food and costumes during the entire shoot with no wages by the end of it, even if the film hits big at box office.
The source adds that the reason being that, when they spend to get roles in one, two or more movies, the females (most especially) end up being noticed by some big guns in the socio-political sectors who allegedly want them in bed for the bigger bucks. Thus, why not spend N200K to get in a film and then make millions by having a secret affair with a politician?
This could be the darkest side to Nollywood but is there any remedy to the situation? Tell us what you think below.

Politics / A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing!orji Uzor Kalu Blasts Theodore Orji. by NewsAlert: 11:19am On Aug 16, 2014
The first thing that would strike any person meeting Theodore Ahamefule Orji for the first time – 16 years ago – was his humble personality. I doubt if he still carries himself with the same simplicity and candour, for which I have known him, now he has tested power as governor. I say so, because power has a way of intoxicating some people, especially those who never dreamed of getting it. I must openly submit that I was taken in by his facial appearance, not knowing that deep inside he was a different person all together – a chameleon. Subsequent events have since proved me right. Up till this moment, I still do not believe that it was the same Theodore Orji, whom I met at Chief Mark Uka Ogwo’s house, that is hauling abuses at me on a daily basis and walking the corridors of power like a colossus. He calls me all kinds of names and uses every available medium to castigate my person.

His speech at every public or private event begins and ends with my name, as if he has no other business in governance other than to abuse Orji Kalu. Not only that: he goes about telling all kinds of naked lies in order to soil my reputation. He also goes to gossip to the President and his wife about me, telling them unprintable things, just to disfavour me. He tells anybody he encounters – businessmen and women, politicians, the clergy, traders, farmers, drivers, carpenters, bricklayers, the high and mighty, lowly people, and just anybody – that I am his sworn enemy. He also takes his campaign of hate against me to the Diaspora. The situation is really getting out of hand.

The funny part of it is that some of the people he tells lies about me still come back to find out what exactly I had done to the man to make him hate me so much. When I ask them what reason or reasons he gave them for hating me so much, they would say, none. So, what then have I done to Theodore Orji?

I am certain by now the President and others he had lied to against me would have known the truth – that the man is a pathological liar and a usurper. No God-fearing person would go to the level he has gone in seeking vengeance, if indeed I had done any wrong against him.

I had kept quiet all this while in the hope that commonsense would prevail somewhere along the line. Instead of the man minding his constitutional business of governance and thinking about how to better the lives of our traumatised people, whom he has abandoned chasing shadows, he has spent scarce resources fighting me and everybody related to me. There is no single day that passes that he does not use the state government-owned radio and television to pour invectives on me and my relations. Not only that, he has as well been going about concocting all sorts of tales in order to destroy my reputation and create conflict between me and others. To show how heartless the man is, he has even leveled some grievous allegations against me in order to get at me for no justifiable reason.

Is it not sheer wickedness and the height of meanness for him to station his boys at the gates to my houses in Abuja, Lagos and the village to write names of people who visit me and report back to him? He in turn punishes those people. Is that how governance is done? This is a democracy where people have some freedoms, including freedom of association and movement.

Since May 2010, when he chose to part ways with me and others (so it seems), he has never ceased insulting me and doing things that are unimaginable and repulsive – all in a futile attempt to paint me black. Unfortunately, all his gimmicks are not working. Instead he has succeeded in making a mockery of himself and exposing how callous and vindictive he can be.

Indeed, I have been forced some times to do an introspection, trying to find out what exactly I had done against him to warrant such hatred and malice. But after each exercise, I could not lay my hands on anything. The only sin I know I committed against him was that God used me and the good people of Abia State, who believed in me, to make him governor while he was in prison, contrary to the opposition of some close aides, family relations and confidants against his choice. As I wrote last week, there was no sign at all that he would do any of the wicked things he does these days against my person, because he pretended to be a good man when in essence he was a chameleon. He hid many things about himself from me and put up a very pretentious and false personality for the 8 years he served as my Chief of Staff. How he managed to do it without being detected is something only him can tell. All I know is that I trusted him and treated him like an elder brother and confidant.

For the 8 years he worked as my Chief of Staff, I never used a foul language on him or berated him. Rather I treated him with utmost respect and love, even where he had visibly wronged me. I left virtually everything pertaining to the administration of the Government House under his care and direction. He was in charge of almost everything in Government House – from security vote to routine administration. I, working with one of my closest aides then, Victor Oye, and the commissioners, concentrated on policy formulation, key-decision-making and supervision of the ministries. There were no-go areas for him. In fact, he had uninhibited access to my bedroom, my office and every place. Each time he travelled abroad he stayed at my private residences.

I recall with deep pain (because he stabbed me in the back) the day he came to the Governor’s Lodge to see me. I was in the bathroom. Time was 6.30 in the morning. He had come with a letter for my signature. The letter was urgent as the Attorney-General was to travel to Abuja with it first thing in the morning of that fateful day. When my personal aide drew my attention to his presence I asked him to bring him up into my bedroom. When he knocked, I asked him to come straight on to the bathroom, because of the urgency of the letter, not minding that I was naked. I used a dry towel to hold the pen he brought for me to sign the said letter. Before I signed the letter I told him that now that he had seen my unclothedness there was nothing else I could keep away from him. I also told him that if he chose in future to betray me there would be nothing else to talk about. He was jolted by my comment and stood fixated for some minutes, barely controlling his shock. I am sure he recalls that statement each moment he goes out of his way to malign me. That is if his conscience pricks him.

There was nothing good I did not do for this man. I gave him his first executive car in life and money to build a befitting house, encouraged him to send his children to good schools, entrusted him with the administration of Government House, including the management of financial resources due to the governor and the Government House. He also rose to the enviable position of director, and later permanent secretary within the same period. I cannot list everything here, because the list is long.

I capped my goodness to him by making him governor (by the grace of God and the unflinching support of our people), while he was in detention at the Kirikiri Minimum Prison, Lagos. As I indicated earlier in this article, many people openly opposed his candidature for the position of governor for many reasons. Somebody – a very close confidant of the governor now – approached me then and warned against making him governor. He gave a very grave reason I should never make him governor. Even the then President Olusegun Obasanjo told me pointblank not to make him governor. He struck a deal with my mother to instead choose one of my younger brothers to succeed me as governor in place of Theodore Orji.

To all the advice, I said no. I told whoever cared to listen then that Chief Theodore Orji would succeed me. The reason I settled for him was simple: I thought I had groomed him sufficiently enough to step into my shoes and continue the good works we had started. If I had wanted somebody that would do my biddings blindly, definitely it would not have been Chief Orji. I would have settled for one of the more docile aspirants. I saw in Chief Orji humaneness, humility, simplicity, resilience and hard work, not the haughty, stiff-necked, abusive and cruel personality he currently showcases.

For those who did not know: we went through hell (figuratively speaking) to make him governor. Imagine somebody in detention, without spending a dime or casting his own vote for himself, becoming governor in a hotly-contested governorship election in a state like Abia! Recall we had to contend with the enormous might of the Federal Government, which had earlier thrown its support behind another candidate. Again, the Progressive Peoples’ Alliance (PPA) – the political platform that was used to deliver him as governor – was formed barely four months to the governorship election. So, you can see, he got power on a platter; probably that accounts for the levity with which he holds the office today.

Certainly, if he had spent his personal resources and energy to become governor he would have appreciated the sacrifices we made to make him governor. Today the same party (PPA) and the people who delivered him as governor are his arch enemies. He has done many atrocious things to destroy all of us, but God has been merciful to us.

I have challenged him on a number of occasions to tell the world what really I did to him to warrant such detestable behaviour and enmity towards me. And if in the end I am guilty, I will apologise. I repeat the challenge through this column. Let him go to any national television and tell the whole world what I did to him to make him hate me with such venom. I have wondered why he has suddenly realised that I am such a bad person. Why did he not resign as my Chief of Staff if he knew I was a bad person as he would want Nigerians to believe?

What many people might not have known about the relationship between Governor Theodore Ahamefule Orji of Abia State and me until now was how I came to know him. The meeting between us was per chance. Truly, I met him just once at Chief Mark Uka Ogwo’s House. For clarity sake, Chief Ogwo was my kinsman and a former Head of Service of Abia State. He is now late. It was Chief Ogwo who recommended him to me after all entreaties for him (Chief Ogwo) to be my Chief of Staff failed. He turned down the offer because, according to him, he was getting old. He suggested, instead, that I appoint Theodore Orji in his place. True to my promise, I appointed Chief Orji Chief of Staff.

I remember all the promises he made in the presence of Chief Ogwo: how faithful he would be and how ready he was to stand by me, no matter the circumstances. What has happened at last? He has jettisoned everything good he stood for and now wears the garb of wickedness and hatred. How I wish Chief Ogwo were still alive to testify to all this. I know wherever he is he would be full of regrets for recommending such a chameleonic and deceitful person to me.

Did I do anything wrong by telling him to buckle up and deliver the dividends of democracy to our people? This is the grouse he holds about him. But I do not have any regrets whatsoever for telling him the truth. Any meticulous follower of events in Abia State would agree with me that the man has not performed. To show how mischievous he can be he has gone ahead to label some of the projects executed by our administration between 1999 and 2007 as having been done by his own administration. Abians know who did what. He cannot pull the wool over their eyes.

All the evil machinations he has designed against me have continued to fall through. When I told him not to go for a second term, having not performed in his first, he went to town with the story that I held him hostage. He claimed that I was the person responsible for his inability to perform. Between May 2010 and now (since he claimed to have been liberated) what has he done to prove that I was the one that held him hostage? It is still the same story of non-performance. Let us face the facts: let him tell Abians what he has done for them to justify the huge amount he has collected from the federation account. What he runs in Abia is a government of deceit, using intimidation and vendetta to cow people into submission. That was why I drew the attention of the law enforcement agencies to the seething anger of our people who have condoned his excesses for too long.

There is no question that the people’s anger would have boiled over if we had not persuaded them to remain calm. But there is a limit to how much a people can bear. For me, I have nothing to lose by his constant insults on my person. But our people have everything to lose if we all kept silent and allowed the governor to do as he likes. We are honourable people, which was why we had kept quiet all these years believing that one day soon he would change. However, from all indications, there is no sign that he is ready to come down from his high horse. Instead he has continued to acquire new tricks as day breaks.

Right now there is total confusion and frustration in our state. People walk about hopelessly, not knowing what the future holds for them. As if to add insult to injury the governor has polarised the state by ganging up with some PDP members to zone the governorship of our party to Abia South. That negates the principle of equity. What has always been the sentiment of recent is that the governorship position should go to the old Aba Zone (which they now call Ukwa-Ngwa) in 2015. Ukwa-Ngwa comprises 9 local government areas: Isiala-Ngwa North and South, Aba North and South, Osisioma, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East and West. In real sense, there has never been zoning of the governorship slot in Abia State. By zoning the governorship to Abia South he has succeeded in weeding out the heartland of Ukwa-Ngwaland. How could any reasonable person talk of a governor of Ukwa-Ngwa extraction in Abia State without Isiala-Ngwa North and South and Osisioma? This again shows how myopic and selfish the man can be.

Celebrities / Lol! Bleaching Cream Has Caused Wahala This Time Againooo! by NewsAlert: 5:26pm On Aug 10, 2014
If there's anything we've come to know about Cameroonian singer, Dencia its that she's not one who ever backs down from a fight nor does she tire of saying exactly what's on her mind.
She proved this again today as she had some very heated words for NAFDAC Director-General, Paul Orhii. The tirade was supposedly sparked by a comment earlier credited to the NAFDAC DG where he had threatened to arrest Dencia over her Whitenicious cream. The DG had been allegedly quoted as saying at the Nigerian Entertainment Industry Health Insurance Convention which held on July 22nd in Lagos:
“There is this Cameroonian singer that has been going around with a cream. If I get her, she’ll be arrested”
Although Dencia had already addressed the issue, it would appear that something ticked off the "Super Girl" singer again as she took to Instagram to put Orhii on blast calling him a hypocrite for seemingly endorsing Fair and White which, according to her does essentially the same thing as Whitenicious, while disparaging her product ad even threatening to arrest her.
Read what she wrote below and tell us, was Dencia right to address the DG in such a manner?

Politics / Ghana Records First Case Of Ebola. This Is Really Spreading Fast. by NewsAlert: 4:31pm On Aug 10, 2014
Ghana may now have recorded her first Ebola case. A Burkinabe man, who had fever and bled from his nose and ears "was brought in dead," at the Bawku Presby Hospital in Ghana’s Upper East region Friday afternoon. The Medical Director at the Hospital, Dr Joseph Yaw Manu, confirmed to StarrFMonline.com that the man had died at the time he was brought in, saying: “…What scared me most as a Medical Doctor is that he was bleeding from his ears and nose–symptoms of Ebola.”
On Dr Manu’s orders, blood samples from the deceased have been taken to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) at the University of Ghana for testing. If positive, this would be Ghana’s first confirmed case of the virus, which has killed at least 961 people in the West African sub-region out of 1,779 total cases. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are among the hardest hit countries.Nigeria started recording a few cases recently. Africa’s most populous country became the fourth West African country involved in the outbreak when a dual US-Liberian citizen infected with Ebola arrived in Lagos after flying from Liberia via Togo on 20 July.

Several cases of suspected Ebola have been reported in Ghana since the outbreak in March but they all proved negative after tests. The Government of Ghana says it has put in place measures to contain the disease if it breaks in the country. It recently said screening measures were being tightened at the country’s various borders to ensure the virus is not imported into the world’s second-largest cocoa producer.StarrFMonline.com, learnt that the Burkinabe who just died from the Ebola-like symptoms, came down with a fever while in neighbouring Burkina Faso and was taken to a hospital for treatment in that country but saw no improvement in his condition. His relatives then decided to transport him across the common border between Burkina Faso and Ghana’s Upper East region, for proper care. But he died on the way. His body has been taken back to a town called Sankanduri in Burkina Faso for burial, local Reporter Musah Lansa told StarrFMonline.com.

If tests by NMIMR prove positive, then the relatives of the deceased, as well as the Medical staff that attended to the patient, both in Burkina Faso and Ghana, may have also been exposed to the virus, which the World Health Organization has described as the fastest spreading “worst ever” epidemic of its kind and necessitating a declaration of an international health emergency.
“The outbreak is moving faster than we can control it,” WHO Director-General Margaret Chan told reporters on a telephone briefing from her Geneva headquarters. The U.N. agency referred to the outbreak as “particularly serious” and said all states where the virus is having a toll on citizens and spreading from one person to another should declare a national emergency.
“The declaration ... will galvanise the attention of leaders of all countries at the top level. It cannot be done by the ministries of health alone,” Chan said.
In compliance, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia, have all declared a national emergency over the outbreak.Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with fluids of an infected person, and also through the consumption of bush meat – apes, antelopes and bats – delicacies in some West African countries. The sale of bush meat in Ghana has been affected by the outbreak.

Politics / Nigeria Records Over 10,000 Deaths From Generator Fumes. Isn't This Alarmy? by NewsAlert: 3:15pm On Aug 10, 2014
Alarmed by the increasing death of Nigerians through inhalation of fumes from electricity generating sets popularly known as generators, the President, Good Governance Initiative, GGI, Mr. Festus Mbisiogu, has called on the Federal Government to urgently take steps to halt the trend. He said at the last count no fewer than 10,000 Nigerians have over the years died from poisonous 'generator' fumes, especially in the years between 2008 and 2014.

Attributing this unfortunate situation to the massive use of generators in the country, he urged government to intensify efforts towards energy improvement.

This, he said, will ensure that lives and property are secured, adding that consistent usage of power generating machines in the country is like a time bomb waiting to explode.

Recounting the number of Nigerians who lost their lives as a result of fumes and or explosions from power generating machines within the past two decades, Mbisiogu suggested that the Nigerian government should make it a point of priority to design a progressive model to achieve uninterrupted power generation in the country.

Although, the GGI President commended the Jonathan administration for initiating the process for achieving sustainable electricity in the country, he also stated that responsible Nigerian authorities should be committed to the concerted efforts made by President Jonathan towards sustainable power generation, adding that the National Assembly, stakeholders, political parties and well-meaning Nigerians should arise and fight the terror of power failure and avoid the docile approach and weakness presented.

"President Goodluck Jonathan is the only President who succeeded in privatizing the power sector and his effort towards ensuring consistent electricity in the country should not be thwarted, either by vandals and or corrupt minded Nigerians. Fact is that uninterrupted power supply would reduce poverty, unemployment, massive foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), and improve standard of living an growth of indigenous human capital," Mbisiogu argued.

According to him: "The poor state of power and electricity in the country, and the suffering of common Nigerians are unimaginable. On a daily basis, most homes, businesses and institutions spend a huge part of their income on generator purchase, service and maintenance. Manufacturing industries end products cost prices have increased and consumers are struggling to stay above the water.

"The story is also the same in the health sector, where many lives were lost due to the epileptic nature of electricity and power generation in the country. Everyday, we hear stories on how the country would progress if there was constant power supply and I strongly believe it's the duty of Nigerians to make it a reality."

Similarly, he said that 2000 factories in the country were forced to shut down between the year 2000 and 2014 as a result of unsteady power supply and high cost of running generators, adding that research statistics recently obtained by GGI showed that over 10,000 Nigerians have lost their lives as a result of fumes and explosions from generators.

Politics / Nigerians Beg Obama For Ebola Virus Vaccine. by NewsAlert: 2:11pm On Aug 10, 2014
Nigerians have taken to various social media sites to solicit for President Barrack Obama’s support for the Nigerian nurse who allegedly contracted the deadly Ebola disease. The Nigerian nurse, Justina Ejelonu was said to have contracted the deadly disease after treating a Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, who came into the country with the disease few days ago. Although the Liberian has died from the pawns of the disease, however many health officials who attended to him have been quarantined while others are on the watch while Ejelonu Justina was discovered to have been infected with the deadly virus.

Nigerians however, have taken to the White House website and also social websites like Facebook and Twitter, petitioning President Barrack Obama to release the vaccine called Zmapp, which was developed in the United States for the sole purpose of combating the deadly Ebola disease.

It would be recalled that the U.S. president few days ago made it known to newsmen that the Ebola experimental drug won’t be sent to Africa because its too early, hence the delay for the vaccine to be used in affected countries. However, the infected nurse according to Punch, revealed that she did not have any contact with the Liberian’s body fluids which is the major source of transferring the deadly disease. In her words, she said: ”I never contacted his fluids. I checked his vitals, helped him with his food (he was too weak). I basically touched where his hands touched and that’s the only contact — not directly with his fluids. “At a stage, he yanked off his infusion and we had blood everywhere on his bed. But the ward maids took care of that and changed his linens with great precaution. Every patient is treated as high-risk. If it were air borne, by now wahala for dey (there would have been trouble). I still thank God.”
The allegedly infected nurse also added that the workers’ uniforms and Sawyer’s bedding were burnt afterwards, saying the staff were under surveillance and off-duty till August 11. “Our samples have long been taken by the World Health Organisation and so far, we have been fine. Kudos to my hospital management because we work professionally with every patient considered as high-risk — that’s the training.” The health worker noted that if it were a public hospital, the outcome might have been different, adding that she was however grateful to the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government for their support.

Politics / Apc Alleges Plan Of Pdp To Rig Osun State Election. by NewsAlert: 10:25am On Aug 08, 2014
OSOGBO (NAN) – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the allegation by the All Progressives Congress (APC) of a grand design by the party to rig Saturday’s Osun gubernatorial election.Chief John Oyegun, APC National Chairman, on Thursday at a news conference in Osogbo alleged that the PDP had concluded plans to rig the election in all the 30 local government areas of the state.

Oyegun called on Prof. Attahiru Jega, INEC Chairman and Suleiman Abba, acting Inspector General of Police, to stop the alleged plan to rig the election in the interest of peace and fair play.Oyegun was in company of Alhaji Lai Muhammed, APC National Publicity Secretary; Muheez Banire, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Adebiyi Adelowo, Osun APC Chairman, among others.

However, Diran Odeyemi, PDP Director of Publicity and Research, said the allegation was a figment of the APC’s imagination.

“APC is crying wolf where there is none. There is no basis for rigging at all. We have been campaigning for one-man-one woman-vote and every vote must count.Such allegation is the style of the APC. The party is just heating up the polity to cause tension but what we believe is that the electorate will decide,” he said.

Politics / Why I Didn't Marry Any Of The Nigerian Female Celebrities-sammie Okposu. by NewsAlert: 1:33pm On Aug 07, 2014
In an exclusive interview with Azuh Arinze of Yes International, popular gospel singer, Sammie Okposo, talked about his days as a bachelor with a successful career in the industry.
He revealed that although he had lots of failed relationships, he does not regret his actions as they have taught him a thing or two about married life.
Before the popular singer got hitched, he was linked to several females in the entertainment industry such as Kate Henshaw, Stella Damasus and a few other others.
Sammie just celebrated the 4th wedding anniversary with his beautiful wife Ozioma.
Read excerpts from the interview:

A lot of people have the impression that Sammie is a ladies’ man, a playboy. Is Sammie truly one?

Ah! God forbid bad thing! (General laughter). In fact, like I said, I am one of those people who like history. Because when you go back to history and you start the story, then you progress and get to the present day. You can see the progression and you can see the different junctions of changes a man’s life has gone through. There was a time when it was oh, Sammie is a ladies’ man, single guy, pruuuu! He loves women, he doesn’t want to marry, he just wants to play. And those were my days of youthful exuberance. Let me just pause and say this – I think every man should go through that whole process so that when you build a home and a family, there is nothing out there that has the capacity to come and even make you say you are packing out of your house or to scatter your home or to come and start giving your wife and your children trouble, because some of the guys who dive, and I’m not saying that early marriage is bad; some people dive into it and they have no experience of what the world is. They get in there and while they are married, they start saying hey, like say I know, I for never marry o! Before you know it, they have messed everything up. The home is in crisis, the wife has packed out, families are meeting, bad PR out here and you are just messing up yourself. So, those days of Sammie is a ladies’ man are gone. I am so happily married to the woman of my dreams. In fact, it was my wedding anniversary on the 1st of July. You were there, Azuh. And I’m happy that I did not marry before I got married, because I probably would have joined all the headlines of crashed marriages in the entertainment industry.

We shall return to your marriage. At that time, you dated some of the finest and hottest babes in the industry. Now, when you see fine girls, what goes through your mind and how do you avoid the temptation of going back to your old ways?

My brother! You see, those days, we didn't know better. We didn't know better and I have been able to get around wise mentors and wise counselors who have used their own lives as experiences to teach me certain things. You know when you are just moving by yourself, nobody advises you, there’s nobody you can go to, to say please, what do I do? This, that, that, that is an issue. That is why everybody, you must be accountable, you must submit yourself to people who can pick up their phones and call you and say Sammie, you are messing up, I need to see you right now; I heard X, Y, Z, where are you? Come to my house right now or come to my office now? And you will leave whatever you are doing, drive there. I had to submit myself to those kind of people because my life was going in a kind of crazy direction and I didn't want it to end that way. I had to do a re-think and put myself together and then somebody said you know what, be accountable. When you are accountable to certain people and you know that their eyes and their ears are on ground, they can hear anything, you will behave yourself. Those things restrain you from doing certain things. So, these people have taught me so many things that now you can look at beautiful women; because if beautiful women was the problem, I waited and I married a beautiful woman. So, it is not like when you go back home, what you are living with is not beautiful enough. When you want to mess up, you are imagining the kind of abuse that is going to come. Like, look at his wife; you have this kind of wife, what are you still looking for outside, if something is not worrying you? So, I put myself under those kinds of checks and balances where people can advise me. Even when I have issues, they will say no, this is how you handle it and guess what? My wife is my best friend.

You moved effortlessly from one woman to another then. In fact, you were gliding and galloping (General laughter) – Kate Henshaw, Stella Damasus, Janet Fateye, Gloria Ibru and so on. How were you able to cope during those days?

It was mad! It’s a crazy thing that I did then. The industry just swallowed me. That’s the only way I can describe it because I was an up and coming entertainment personality, I was involved in all the media events, all the awards. They were calling me to be part of the theme songs, to do this, do that and I said to myself, my God, this is the life! The kind of ladies that you will not dare say good morning to; you don’t even have to say good morning; as you are passing, they will just say hi and you begin to wonder: are my the one they are waving at? Because I was in the limelight and I didn’t know how to handle it; I entered it gbuaaaa! And I was like my God; is this what these celebrities are dealing with? Where you don’t even have to say hello to a lady. She’s looking for you, she’s trying to hang out with you. So, I didn’t know what to do with it; I thought that was the life and the thing just swallowed me and like you said, before you knew it, I was gliding and galloping from relationship to relationship. It was crazy! I didn’t know better. I didn’t know better, but I will balance that. I didn’t know better, but somehow, I am grateful that I had to go through that. Because that is what I appreciate now; because of what I have been through. You know they say experience is the best teacher. When you have gone through some things, that is when you look back and you say ah! That was not a good experience. You will do all you can not to go through that again.

You got married quite late. How is married life and how is marriage treating you?

Sweet! Sweet!! In fact, there was an article that said this is one celebrity that we see at almost every event with his wife, and I decided to do that deliberately because a lot of us think that we are too busy to take our wives to events and when you are not guarded, that is the protection. Anywhere you go, they are still saying hello, hello. So, right now, it’s a sweet union. 4 years! Somebody said ah-ah, e don reach 4 years just now? I said yes. July next year, I’m gonna be 5, then 6 and so on. And guess what? I am married for better, for worse because I didn’t go into it expecting it to be a bed of roses. Two different people have come together to form a union. Two different ideologies, two different backgrounds. So, as you go along, you will run against each other in unpleasant ways, but the best part of it is you are able to resolve it, the love is still glowing as you move on and the marriage and the family are still intact. I’m having fun as a married man.

Of all the beautiful girls you dated, why did you settle for your wife, Ozioma?

Em…without trying to discredit anybody, because any past relationship I have had, I respect, and a lot of them have moved into their own families, so I try my best to respect who they are now regardless of whatever we had in the past and that doesn’t make any of them unqualified or not a house wife material. No! It was a decision I made. All the relationships I had in my industry did not get me to that point where I could decide to say I do. Yeah, it went towards that direction, but it didn’t get there. So, I said to myself: dude, maybe you need to look away from this industry, maybe your life partner is not there, because sometimes people say if the person is in the entertainment industry, the person already understands how crazy your schedule is, knows that you would travel, you can be on tour for 6 months and because the person is in the industry, the person will understand. That’s what some people say. So, I thought that would work, but it didn’t work like that and it was not just a one-time thing. So, I decided; I said, take your mind away from the entertainment industry and look outside; maybe the wife you want to look for now would be out there and not in the industry. So, I deliberately took my mind away from the entertainment industry and I told myself that well, they are fantastic people, but I think one relationship, two relationships, three, four, five is enough to convince you that you know what, try it from another side. I decided to look out and it was in my looking out, away from the industry, that I met my wife in God’s kingdom. I went to perform at KICC (Kingsway International Christian Centre in London). Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo’s church. That was how and where I met my wife. She came with her sister. After my performance, I was signing my CDs for people. I was so busy, I wasn’t even looking up. People were on queue; they buy and I sign. But immediately I saw her hand, I looked up, saw a very beautiful woman, but couldn’t do anything because there were so many people on the queue. Later, when I left for my hotel, I still couldn’t get her off my mind. My heart was troubled. Then, a friend called to say he wanted to take me out because I complained of boredom. Along the way, he said we should stop over first at one exhibition going on, and reluctantly I accepted. Azuh, listen to this – when we got to the exhibition, it turned out that it was my wife’s sister that was organizing it and guess what? She was also there! And that was how we started. She refused to give me her number. She only gave me her email address and I started bombarding her with mails, sometimes 10 in a day. Haba! Na me now! Let me tell you another interesting story – during that time, I was getting shows almost every week in London. So, we were always seeing. My manager will call me and say there’s this show, but what they are offering is not much and I will say take it! Shebi they will take care of accommodation, flight and so on? Just to see my wife o! So, I was always going to London, seeing her till we got married. But you people, the press, didn’t know until we finally got married. My marriage was a big surprise to all of you, which I like. At least, una don leave me alone (General laughter).

Politics / Rihanna Is A Devil! Drake. by NewsAlert: 9:19am On Aug 07, 2014
Rihanna is now the devil, at least that's what her ex beau Drake told his hundreds of thousands of fans during his OVO Fest performance in Toronto, Canada Monday night.
Given the fact that this is the same guy she used to bang after she struggled to dump Chris Brown, is this too harsh?

While singing "Days In the East" same Monday night in Toronto, a fiery 6 appeared on the projector, followed by an image of a fierce Rihanna with dracula fangs, followed again by another 6, then another Rihanna and then a third 6 --- (6-Rihanna-6-Rihanna-6).
It remains unclear what exactly transpired between RiRi and Dreezy during and after their relationship but what turned Rihanna from Drake's girl into a satanic symbol? Drake has trashed her here and there, but it's one thing to have beef with your ex, and another to call her out as the devil tagged with the evil mark – 666.
My people what do you think of this Drake move? Does RiRi deserve being called a devil? See more on newshalert..com

Following the death of some members of the Shiite Islamic sect, the Defence Headquarters, DHQ, on Friday, August 1 said it had commenced inquiry into the clash between soldiers and the sect. The DHQ’s Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade made this known in a statement in Abuja.

Mr. Olukolade said the inquiry became necessary to calm the situation in Zaria after the recent encounter between soldiers who were on routine patrol and members of the sect.

It stated that while not downplaying the significance of such incident, it was also necessary to ensure that sufficient information was obtained beginning from the unit level and other reliable sources at the location.

He said that a preliminary investigation had been conducted to unravel the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

“An inquiry is subsequently ongoing at the Divisional level.Although, the report of the preliminary investigation at the unit level has vehemently contradicted some of the issues raised by the leader of the group. In his statement, especially on the allegation of extra judicial killings, the higher headquarters is conducting additional investigation on the incident to ascertain the claims in the preliminary reports from the unit level. In spite of the preliminary findings, the importance placed on the respect for human rights in all military operations, activities and interactions, has prompted the additional steps presently being taken to ascertain the true situation.”

He said the higher level of military inquiry is with a view to unmasking the remote and immediate causes of the incident and to identify anyone found culpable.Mr. Olukolade said that those apprehended during the incident are being interrogated.

“The DHQ deeply commiserates with the families of those that lost their lives in that unfortunate incident, especially the leader of the group who was reported to have lost his sons.“Indeed, his present disposition is understandable as it is pathetic. I assure that no effort will be spared to ensure necessary justice on this matter.”

Politics / Omisore Will Save Osun State-jonathan. by NewsAlert: 9:03pm On Aug 02, 2014
Ahead of the Osun State Governorship elections on August 9, President Goodluck Jonathan said on Saturday in Ile-Ife that the PDP candidate Iyiola Omisore, would win the elections.Jonathan who spoke during a courtesy visit to Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Ooni of Ife said:

“Omisore’s time has come …God’s time is the best. The president, who described Ooni as a blessing to the present generation, thanked him for his support. He said Omisore was a “fantastic material’’ that Osun needed at this time to take the state to the “promised land.I urge support for the PDP gubernatorial candidate, cast your vote for him and Omisore will not let you down", Jonathan said.

Earlier, Sijuwade had called for a minute silence in memory of the souls of departed heroes. The traditional ruler named such heroes as the late Obafemi Awolowo, Bola Ige, Alhaji Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano and Igwe Okagwe, the Obi of Onitsha among others.

Sijuwade described Omisore as a humble person, recalling that he “stepped aside’’ for former Governors Bisi Akande and Olagunsoye Oyinlola when he prevailed on him.According to him, it is only God who has the power to appoint the president, governors, and traditional rulers.

On the unity of the country, Sijuwade said: “Without unity the country’s progress will remain very slow.’’

He appealed to traditional rulers to join hands with the government to rid the country of insurgency.

“With their support, Boko Haram insurgency and other activities militating against national growth will become a thing of the past.’’

He said the South-West zone and particularly Osun needed more federal presence in line with the president’s transformation agenda.
