St. Joseph’s Medical Center said they followed guidelines put in place by the CDC and the Houston Health Department. HOUSTON — A homeless man who tested positive for COVID-19 was treated and released from St. Joseph’s Medical Center. He landed back on the streets of Houston. Harris County officials said it’s a situation they’re trying to prevent. There were homeless advocates who knew about the man and were working to get him a place to stay, but the hospital released him with nowhere to go. “It spreads so quickly, you look at the encampments that are all around town, you know one person gets it, they’re all going to get it,” said Tommy Thompson, CEO of Open Door Mission in east Houston. In this case, the homeless man was sent to the hospital last week and tested positive. “St. Joe’s had him in the ICU for several days and now he’s been released and unfortunately, they released him to the streets,” Thompson said. “We have been planning for a scenario where we have to house folks that test positive. Certainly the case at St. Joseph’s brought that to the forefront,” said Francisco Sanchez with the Harris County Office of Emergency Management..... more https://weighlit.com/homeless-man-who-tested-positive-for-covid-19-at-houston-hospital-released-back-onto-streets/

Saudi security services have arrested male hairdressers for cutting a woman’s hair in the capital, Riyadh, Okaz newspaper reported. Social media users circulated a video of a young man saying that he was surprised to see a woman sitting next to him in a men-only barbershop in Riyadh, without specifying the name of the store. The paper said the local security services were able to locate the hairdressers, arresting the workers to investigate them before referring them to the competent authorities. The video clip sparked controversy on social media amid calls to allow mixed hairdressers in the kingdom. Meanwhile; other social media users condemned the woman’s behaviour saying it offends modesty and social norms. https://newsgerian.com/saudi-arrests-male-hairdressers-for-cutting-womans-hair/

Extensive diplomatic talks are taking place between the US, Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, to set up a summit in Cairo to include an exclusive meeting between Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed Bin Salman, according to senior Arab diplomatic sources last night. Reported by Israeli news outlet Israel Hayom, US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has been conducting mediations between Tel Aviv and Riyadh, regarding the meeting over the past year. “In recent days there have been very intensive discussions between Washington, Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia to arrange a summit meeting in Cairo as early as the coming weeks, even before the election in Israel,” confirmed the senior Arab diplomatic source. Apart from Egypt, where it is held, it will be attended by the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia and also the leaders of the United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Bahrain and Oman. It was reportedly initially suggested by Bahrain that the summit be held in its capital Manama – as the first “deal of the century” gathering was – where Netanyahu and Bin Salman would have met. It was also revealed that Jordan received an invitation to the proposed summit, but that the country’s King Abdullah has requested officials from other Arab states, to ensure that Palestinian Authority (PA) president, Mahmoud Abbas, should also receive an invitation. The request was allegedly met with a positive response from the US, which confirmed that discussions with Ramallah were already taking place, and that Israel had agreed to the PA’s involvement. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas holds a press conference at the Presidency Building in Ramallah, West Bank on 3 July Abbas has, however, insisted that the PA would “adhere to their boycott of Washington and to freezing diplomatic ties with Israel,” referring to the cutting of ties following the US’ unveiling of the peace plan last week, which was found to severely sideline Palestinians and their access to their territory. According to the official, the US informed Abbas that: “This would likely be Abbas’s and the Palestinians’ last chance to climb down from the tree and partake in the diplomatic developments unfolding in the region.” Throughout recent years, Saudi Arabia along with other Gulf Arab states, have been undergoing an increase in relations with Israel, raising concerns among many that they are slowly normalising ties with the Jewish state and sidelining the struggle against the continued occupation of Palestinian territories. Last July, for example, the foreign ministers of both Israel and Bahrain held a public meeting together in the US, marking the first such incident to openly take place between an Arab country and Israel. Also, over the past few years there have emerged numerous revelations of covert meetings between Israeli officials and those from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, in particular, recently discovered to have had two decades of secret relations with the country. Just last week, when the “deal of the century” was fully concluded and unveiled, Saudi Arabia was one of the main supporters of the Trump administration’s plan, and earlier this week it was revealed that the kingdom intends to purchase missiles from an Israeli company. https://newsgerian.com/us-promotes-meeting-between-mbs-and-netanyahu/

The US is planning to renew a waiver allowing Iran to import gas and electricity from Iran without risking the sanctions imposed on Tehran, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Thursday. Reporting US and Iraqi officials, the WSJ confirms that this news came as Washington and Baghdad have been working to de-escalate the tension between one another, after last month’s crisis relating to the US assassination of Qasem Soleimani. The WSJ reported that there were differences among officials in Trump’s administration regarding the waiver. “We want to maintain maximum pressure on Iran,” the WSJ reported a US official as stating. “But it should not be at the expense of the economic stability of its neighbours,” he added. https://newsgerian.com/us-to-extend-waiver-allowing-iraq-to-import-gas-electricity-from-iran/

Turkey will use its right of self-defense in the strongest manner if Turkey faces a new attack in Syria, Turkey’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday, reports Anadolu Agency. In the event of a new attack, the proper response will be given in the strongest manner based on the right of self-defense, the ministry said in a statement. The ministry also said Turkish observation posts in Idlib “continue their duties and are capable of protecting themselves with the weapons and equipment they possess.” On Monday, an Assad regime attack in Idlib, northwestern Syria, killed seven Turkish soldiers and one civilian contractor working with the Turkish military and injured over a dozen people. In retaliation, Turkey struck over 50 targets and killed 76 Syrian soldiers. Idlib has been a stronghold of opposition and anti-government armed groups since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. In September 2018, Turkey and Russia agreed to turn Idlib into a de-escalation zone in which acts of aggression are expressly prohibited. But more than 1,800 civilians there have been killed in attacks by the regime and Russian forces since then, flouting both the 2018 cease-fire and a new one that started on January 12. More than 1.5 million Syrians have moved near the Turkish border due to intense attacks over the past year. Turkey remains the country with most refugees in the world, hosting more than 3.7 million migrants since the start of the Syrian civil war. https://newsgerian.com/turkey-vows-to-retaliate-in-strongest-manner-if-attacked-in-syria/

Israel has escalated a trade war with the Palestinians by stopping their agricultural exports through Jordan, Palestinian Agriculture Minister Riyal al-Attari said on Saturday. Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) opened a new front in their decades-long conflict with a trade dispute that began in October and has escalated over the past week. Yesterday, the director of Israeli crossings informed all exporters and all relevant parties that all Palestinian agriculture products would be banned from export to world markets through the Jordanian crossing starting Sunday, al-Attari told Voice of Palestine Radio. Israeli and Jordanian officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In October, the PA announced a boycott of Israeli calves. Last weekend Israeli Defence Minister Naftali Bennett said he would halt all PA agricultural imports, which in turn prompted the PA to say it would end imports of Israeli agricultural products, fruit juice, and bottled water. Those moves have frayed trade links that have generally held strong since the two sides signed interim peace accords in the 1990s, even weathering the collapse in 2014 of peace talks. Bilateral tensions have been further fuelled by the announcement of US President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace plan which has prompted a string of violent incidents in Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank, and Gaza. The actions of the PA, whose power base is in the West Bank, in part reflect greater efforts to end what its leaders – including new Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh – see as an over-dependence on Israeli markets. “We are at a critical political moment and we completely understand the negative impact that will result from these measures, but I say with all confidence that that negative impact will also affect the Israeli economy,” said al-Attari. “We have several options and measures with which we can respond to each Israeli decision that aims to harm our national economy,” he added. https://newsgerian.com/israel-bans-palestinian-agricultural-exports-via-jordan/
