Seven people have died and several others seriously injured in a fire which ripped through a building in a wealthy Paris neighbourhood on Monday night. The blaze in the French capital’s trendy 16th arrondissement also left 27 people including three firefighters with minor injuries. “The toll could still increase because the fire is still in progress on the 7th and 8th floors” of the eight-storey block, fire service spokesman Captain Clement Cognon told AFP at the scene. Described by firefighters as a “scene of incredible violence”, the blaze started at about 1:00 am (0000 GMT). Its cause is so far unknown. Some of those affected scrambled on to nearby roofs to escape the smoke and flames, and needed to be rescued by fire crews. Captain Cognon added: “We had to carry out many rescues, including some people who had taken refuge on the roofs. Thirty people were evacuated on ladders.” At approximately 5:00 am (0400 GMT), fire crews had finished evacuating the block on rue Erlanger but were still fighting the flames. Two adjacent buildings were also evacuated as a precaution and local officials were on site to help find housing for residents who could not go back to their homes. Around 200 firefighters were still at the scene in the early hours of Tuesday, battling the blaze and treating the injured. Several streets of the chic neighbourhood were cordoned off by police and fire crews, and an AFP journalist said a strong smell of smoke was in the air. Three days after an Agusta AW 139 helicopter flying Vice President Yemi Osibanjo crashed in Kabba, Kogi State, the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has concluded investigations on the accident. According to a report by TheNation, the investigation came on the heels of gathering of series of evidences which included: inspection of the chopper wreckage at the crash site; interview of airline crew such as pilots, engineers and other technical personnel; analysing eyewitness accounts, as well as laboratory testing of the broken rotor and other parts of chopper. The paper quoted a source at the AIB saying the preliminary report of the accident will be released soon, but no probable cause(s) has been given as the reason for the crash. Another source close to Caverton Helicopters, managers of the crashed chopper, said its insurers have arrived the country to participate in the probe. The source hinted that the insurers, sought permission from the AIB for access to the crash site to carry out valuation of the wreckage and other relevant activity critical to the accident probe. Besides the insurers, it was not clear as at Monday if the helicopter manufacturer, Agusta, would participate in the inquiry. According to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)-prescribed aviation regulations, the aircraft manufacturers ought to participate in the investigation. The involvement will enable the manufacturer learn useful lessons in preventing a reoccurrence; if there are issues with the equipment design or other technical hitches. Tunji Oketumbi, spokesman of the AIB, said the bureau had concluded preliminary investigation on the crash, which he described as “high profile”, because of the status of the occupant in the ill-fated chopper. He said an accident could be so described, if the aircraft was carrying many influential people; or there are many multi-nationals. Oketumbi said: “so far, the AIB has done what is statutorily required of it. We did not require any foreign assistance. We have carried out the relevant findings at the crash site and interviewed the crew and other people relevant to the operation. So, far, the helicopter wreckage has not been removed.” He, however, took exception to the remarks attributed to Caverton Helicopters which suggested the probable cause(s) of the crash. According to him, besides giving flight information – type of aircraft; registration number; number of occupant in the aircraft and circumstances of the accident, the airline should refrain from speculating the cause of the crash. Doing such, Oketumbi said, would amount to pre-empting the investigation. Facebook is planning to stitch together its three main messaging services - WhatsApp, Instagram direct messages and Facebook Messenger. But, the move is raising concerns about privacy. It was only last year that Facebook was besieged by angry users and worried investors over the company's privacy crisis and now, in 2019, the Menlo Park-headquartered company is back in news again. This time it is being questioned over its attempt to integrate its messaging platforms - WhatsApp, Instagram direct messages and Facebook Messenger. The integration attempts sound good on paper, but has a lot of people worried. Why merge at all? For starters, the integration is aimed at keeping users locked into Facebook's ecosystem. No matter what you do, you'll, in almost all probability, be on one of the three Facebook owned apps. This will not only increase Facebook's user base but will also enhance its advertising business and provide new source of revenues. With growth slowing down, regulators constantly prodding and the company reducing the advertisements on news feed of its primary platform, the timing of the union makes complete sense. Talking about advertisements, the integration will enhance Facebook's understanding of its users. Ad targeting from Facebook is already disconcertingly accurate. It is serving you ads based on your like/dislikes, statuses you post and even the websites you visit. The integration will only enhance Facebook's knowledge about you and help it to serve more relevant ads. But the biggest advantage for Facebook is the end of fragmentation. As more and more people rely on messaging apps to communicate, the need for having two-three different messaging apps for different sets of people on different platforms is frustrating. The integration will simplify the life of not only the users but also Facebook as it won't have to develop competing versions of new features. Lastly, the cross-platform messaging will simplify business dealings. The integration would make it possible for businesses using one platform to message potential clients on other chat platforms. For example, a clothing brand on Instagram can directly get in touch with a buyer on Facebook Messenger, one-on-one to finalise a deal! What about privacy? For starters, the whole business model of Facebook is based on visibility of users' data and understanding what they like or dislike. All of the data collected by Facebook allows them to customise the users' news feed. But, Facebook has failed in the past to ensure privacy and secure users' data. Facebook reportedly even considered selling user data to the advertisers back in 2012 and 2014. At least on the outside, Facebook has woken up to the issue of privacy and data protection after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, but its efforts continue to remain less than desirable. And, with plans to bring advertisements to the WhatsApp status feed, the distrust is likely to grow. More importantly, among the three Facebook-owned platforms, only WhatsApp supports end-to-end encryption. Facebook Messenger, on the other hand, requires users to toggle the secret conversation feature and Instagram messages aren't end-to-end encrypted at all. What happens when an Instagram user messages a WhatsApp user? Since Instagram messages aren't encrypted, the chats may be vulnerable to hackers! Implementation of cross-platform end-to-end encryption isn't an easy task. It will require Facebook to rebuild Instagram messages and Facebook Messenger from the ground up. This would require implementation of identical protocols on all three platforms. For example, at the moment the Signal protocol, a cryptographic protocol that is used to provide end-to-end encryption, are implemented differently on both WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Host of this year’s Big Brother Naija reality show, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, has warned against potential housemates campaigning on social media. The auditions held across eight cities of Lagos, Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Ibadan, Enugu, Warri, Calabar and Benin on Friday and Saturday. Ebuka, writing on his Instagram page, expressed his anger over applicants creating a buzz about auditioning. “Like, are your followers the ones auditioning? Or you think if auditions were done on social media that wouldn’t have been specifically announced? I don’t get it. “In fact you are probably even doing yourself more harm. A major element of Big Brother is secrecy and surprise but you think announcing your intentions or social media is a bright idea – toh,” he said. One of the former housemates in the last edition, Teddy A, was quick to respond to Ebuka’s post. “Please don’t tell them, they will learn the hard way. Why they solicit for votes on social media like it’s a requirement. Our people don’t know how to follow simple instructions. BBN audition discreet pass secret cult initiation,” Teddy A wrote.
