You mean you can install WInXP right within Ubuntu?  Man u r killing me here, how do I lay my hands on Ubuntu, I don't want to go through downloading and burning it on CD  |

 The above is a screenshot of my system which of course is running Ubuntu 6.10, and an added bonus: I have also installed Window$ XP using VMware so that I am still in touch with my Football Manager  and a lot of other stuff (like Flash MX) that are still not fully developed yet in Linux. . . |

Doesn't have to be XP. I chose XP because I want to keep abreast with what is happening in Micro$haft's world. If Vista comes out I will upgrade it (and that is because my system would allow me to). Personally, I think Win2k is the best OS M$ ever made. . . |

No. The idea behind VMware is to run another operating system within your current one to save you the hassle of dual booting. I was actually liberated from Window$ by running Linux in VMware within a Window$ system, and being realistic guys we acknowledge that there're still some things that we can't do in Linux, like FM for example, so we are turning the tables. Window$ in VMware, within Linux. . . |

Yes, provided your host system is powerful enough, VMware's guest system would run anything. |

I will try and break it down from the log message. [size=10pt]ttyACM0<Info>: Speed 460800; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0" From this, your phone Usb modem was detected and assigned to /dev/ttyACM0 and the modem speed is 460800. Check your /etc/wvdial.conf , it should be similar to this. note this // are just comments, don't include the them in your scripts [Dialer Defaults] Modem = /dev/modem //yours should be /dev/ttyACM0 Baud = 115200 //460800 Init1 = ATZ Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ISDN = 0 Modem Type = Analog Modem ; Phone = <Target Phone Number> ; Username = <Your Login Name> ; Password = <Your Password> It is exactly same with your, but just same format. Don't edit it, we are going to use the pppconfig (GUI) to edit it. Run this command in your terminal sudo pppconfig displays a GUI, use your tab, arrow and enter key to navigate and select your options. In the first window, leave the options on create and use the tab key to select Ok, hit enter. Next is the provider window, replace provider with the name of your provider, and note this will also be the file/connection name, in your case, Celtel. next window select dynamic (this options doesn't work well on most linux systems, edit and choose static, ie if the dynamic fails), the way around it is to log to windows and retrive your ip and dns address. Note : phone number, most gprs network uses *99# enter the user name and password, get this from your service provider, I think for MTN. it is wap, wap. For authentication use PAP, used by most networks. Save your settings, you have succeded in edit a number of scripts from one spot. Finally enter the sudo pon celtel Don't add <> to it. and to disconnect sudo poff celtel This is to show you, a clip of my pppconfig UI.[/size]

@rozilla What type of adapter are you using ? is it a usb connector or serial connector ? Let me know so that I can guide you through. I use starcomms too but with a usb connector with my laptop and serial connector with my desktop. Hoping to hear from you. @adewaleafolabi That's kool. It shows that your are learning fast. a friend just got ubuntu 64 bit edition and we tried 2install but when we started installation but we tried partitioning but showed failed to start partition , its a 60gb but i 1gb has bin partitioned by manufacturer for recovery and there's windows on it plz how can i partition it manually |

@adewaleafolabi showed failed to start partition From your post, your system already have 2 partitions ie recovery partition and the C partition. If you have other partitions or the window partition uses all the HDD, too bad. But there is a way out, get partition margic version 8.0, use it to resize your HDD. You can do this without affecting your data. Then install the Ubuntu linux of the free partition. Mind you, if you have up to three partition, it is advisable to make the Linux partition a logical partition, then create at least a swap and root partition on the logical partition to install the Ubuntu. GRUB will be able to figure the new HDD structure. With this, you should be ok, i just borrowed a dongle from someone i was able 2 transfer files but to serve as dial up connection i failed if anyone knows how plz share I haven't tried getting a dongle to work on linux before, but i think it shouldn't be that hard to do. Just plug it into the system, check the log messages and find out where the device reside as in something like /dev/------, then use it for your network connection configuration.Give it a shot and post your message. thanks mimoh I must say a big thanks to you too, for bringing out the challenges in you and making me part of it. @rozilla can anyone tell me how to configure my starcomms landline phone's wireless modem in ubuntu Ok, to set up your internet with your starcomms phone, just follow this steps, Quite easy. 1. Open two terminals. on one type this command, just to view you log messages as you progress. sudo tail -f /var/log/messages 2. Plug your phone to your computer, laptop or desktop, usb or serial connector. Watch the log message, it should display that a device has be detected and gives the locatiion of the device. Something like ttyUSB0 for usb or ttyS1 for serial. Note it down. 3. On the second terminal, type this command sudo wvdialconf This command should be able to detect you modem and determine the best speed for your modem. Ok. Before, I forget, the output is written to /etc/wvdial.conf. 4. On the terminal type sudo pppconfig A GUI appears, provide all the required info, at the end you should have a similar screen on this link https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-11508.96.html#msg677899 5. On the terminal type pon starcomms ----- to start the pppd or poff starcomms --- to shutdown the connection Note: You will need the IP address of starcomms DNS, get it from you windows.
