Are people really making money in Nollywood?

Most actors and actresses in Nollywood are poor. And the so called Nollywood stars who are posing and posturing as rich celebrities cannot afford brand new models of the latest cars, except the "Tokunbo" second cars they drive.

How many Nollywood stars  can afford to live in Ikoyi or Victoria Island where the real rich Nigerians live?
How many Nollywood stars can afford a N3 million per year flat in Ikoyi or VI?

Most of the money Genevieive has is not from acting in Nollywood. And since "Critical Assignment" what other well-paying acting job has RMD done?

Most actors and actresses in Nollywood are poor.
And the richest actor or actress in Nollywood cannot even be compared to the regular "Waka Pass" in Hollywood.

Lest you forget, our N3 million is less than $30,000.

If journalists, webmasters, and even some doctors are not rich, why should mere actors and actresses be rich?

They say that Nollywood is a huge film industry and the third largest in the world. And they also said that millions of dollars have been made by those pirating Nollywood videos in America and Europe. But I believe that all these bogus claims are garbage.

I still want the governement to investigate and probe the Ibo marketers who are claiming to make millions of dollars from Nollywood. Because I suspect that they are using Nollywood as a cover up for the real deals behind the cameras. Because, if they are really making money from their movies, the actors, actresses, producers and directors should be very comfortable.

The artistes I see at the National Theatre and their joints in Surulere look like people who need help.

Mnet made Nollywood popular. But most of the actors and actresses are still earning peanuts.
Re: Most Nollywood Actors And Actresses Are Poor by Seun(m): 1:05pm On Jun 30, 2006
The majority of actors, models and singers in any country are poor. Acting, modeling and music are over-exposed professions. Everybody wants to be an actor, model, or musician because when you turn on your TV you see them and you think they are more special than the professionals you don't see on TV.

It is only the lucky few that can claim to be rich. For every rich artist, there are 100 struggling wannabes, and it is not only in Nigeria that things are like that. Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic and co are comfortable. You shouldn't compare them to businessmen like Dangote or Adenuga because an entertainer is basically a star employee and nothing more. They cannot be richer than the businessmen who are sponsoring them!

Dude, you are comparing apples and oranges: you have to look at it as what you can buy. My classical example is getting my hair cut. In the atlanta area, it's about $10 on average, $12 if you want to tip. At present exchange rates, thatz about N1600 at least. In Nigeria, I can get my hair cut for N30 (N40 without light), in the calabar/uyo area, tip N70 and I still wdnt hv spent $1 grin

As for the nollywooders being broke, I will say some, not all. Most hollywooders are broke too. Not all start off making $20million a movie. Everyonez gotta start somewhere. Also, just because you are nollywood doesn't mean you have to start off living in VI, VGC or Ikoyi or that trendy area of Abuja (abi na Wusu district? wink). By broke, I mean by their standards, and not the "common man's" standards. If you hand babatunde the grass cutter civil servant N250K a month, I bet he would be organizing special fasting sessions just for you grin

Now, if you asked, "who is really making nollywood money?", I would say it's those of us in the diaspora, who will buy a VCD at N500, bring it with them to their destination, copy it and rent it at $2 a movie (atlanta area), or sell it (both video and disc versions - average price, again atlanta area, $10).

For those who say they are broke, let them go get another job for a while, taste the eva wine there and come back and letz c if they will be saying the same thing.

As always, my 2 cents smiley

Man, you deserve a bag full of coconut for that, couldn't have said it better. One does not have to live in a golden castle to to prove they are Rick. Chris Rock drives a Nissan Altima and you can't call him poor nor broke, he's just wise. Same thing applies to Nollywwod actors. Anybody who makes above 2 million per year in Nigeria in is rich and I can break it  down if you're confused. With that said, in the hands of an irresponsible buffon, that money wouldn't  last.

That Nollywood is making millions of dollars is not a claim, it is a fact . Do you honestly believe that the marketers are disclosing the full sale figures? If you believe that then you've  got serious problems. Most of them complain about poor sales and selling only 10,000 copies which does not even cover the production cost. Now tell me what type of crack head marketer will make 100 films in one week when they can't even recoup their production capital. A naija man at that? Tufiakwa! This is just as impossible as a hairy lizard. About Nollywood acotrs driving expensive brand new Hummer, well, most of us in the USA know that you don't have to be rich to drive a Hummer, an average joe can make a down payment on a Hummer and there goes your so called 'expensive' SUV in the hands of the commoin man so what's the big deal. If they bought 'Tokunbo' at least they paid cash and not some lease bullsh-i-t. Still gotta give them props.

The shocking truth is ALL the marketers disclose only about 10/20 percent of the sales and if they want to be modest, they disclose 40% and then shoot themselves in the head for being that 'stupid'. Before you tear me down, hear me out. I have been there and that means I have proof and experience to back up my statement. The government should swoop down on them together with the pirates 'cause they are both ruining the industry. Nigerian actors stepping up and taking their skills to the next level is another topic for another day.

When you bring into factor the amount of money generated at home and the amount from the Pirates of the Caribb, I mean Diaspora, yes, Nollywood is making millions and a lot of Nollywood actors are rich beyond imagination as far as Naija is concerned unless you want to use USA as your yard stick in which case I will ask you to see a shrink becasue the average Nigerian does not pay $400.00 a month on a very crappy studio apartmen nor $1200.00 a month on another aged and washed out two bedroom apartment. Truth is that anyone who makes $2Million in Naija annually is a lot more comfortable than he who makes $100.000 per anum in the USA,, you better believe that.

The Nollywood people should be reading your comments.

Nobody in Nollywood makes $2 million a year.
Not even OJ who built a hotel with over $2 million.
He made the money over many years.

The same way we hail Nigerian billionaires and they cannot declare their assets, because their billions are questionable.

If Nollywood marketers are money spinners, we would have known the truth.

Nigerians need more knowledge in economics to know how money works.
That was why the demand for ordinary N25 Billion from each bank in Nigeria sent majority of the banks out of business.

That is why the annual budget of Nigeria is less than the annual budget of New York?
And Nigeria is among the largest exporters of crude oil and LNG in the world and yet Nigeria is among the poorest countries in the world?

Nigerians can boast. grin
But there is nothing to show for it from Lagos to Abuja.

Orikinla,
I wish that you did not tribalise this issue. Wal-Mart employees are least paid in the US about $7/hr, but Walton's family is the richest in the World. Their combined wealth surpasses that of Bill Gates and Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffet. This does not mean that they have shortchanged their employees. Since its called labor market, they must obey forces of demand and supply. We have a lot of movie actors and actresses in Naija, which to some extent depletes their wages and their bargaining power. Fact; what determines price, the willingness of the buyer to buy at all cost would put more money into the seller's hand and the willingness of the seller to sale at all cost will save the buyer some money.

Please Igbos are not the only people in Nollywood. I did not hear you say that all the politicians who have illegally acquired wealth should be investigated. Why is that only the trees that bear good fruits do people throw stone at? Mind you no actor or actress in the world is a billionaire, but many producers and director are- Steven Spielberg,George Lucas, and CO. They pay actors, because they are their employers.

As per stand of living, this is very relative to our economic indices. Mind you that PPP (purchasing power parity) is not the same. They do not need to live in Ikoyi to be rich given the nature of their income. One thing about our system is that It’s cash oriented and you cannot live  beyond your income. So no credit check or down payment.  Abeg 4million Naira is a lot of money everywhere- about $35,000 for a country with an income per capita of $400/per annum. Remember these are the same people who buy these movies.

Did someone say that OJ built a house for $2 million or Naira? Which OJ? Simpson or OJ Productions?
Re: Most Nollywood Actors And Actresses Are Poor by Orikinla(m): 5:19pm On Jul 01, 2006

I did not get the information that OJ spent over $2 million to build his hotel online.
Everybody who is somebody in Nollywood knows about it.  Most of the top Nollywood stars have been there.

OJ is the most successful Nollywood producer and marketer. And the guy is very ambitious.
His younger brother who is also a producer and marketer now has a house in Ikoyi.
Re: Most Nollywood Actors And Actresses Are Poor by BigT: 1:24pm On Jul 03, 2006
Folks, we seem to be carried away by this idea that Hollywood actors are poor. poverty itself is relative. the stark reality is that none of these folks are destitute and i guess if they wanted to enlarge their respective largess they would turn to politics. My thinking is that they enjoy what they do and most are not in the game solely for the money. Like footballers, basketball players, i believe they acknowledge the fact that they are indeed making a confortable living out of a hobby, vocation and are quite thankfull for this. I have seen a number of these films and while people question the quality of production, the acting skills are quite good. a lot of them could easily fit in to hollywood if they have agents who are prepared to go the extra mile on their behalf. In hollywood, do u want to tell me that Arnold Schwarzenegger is an actor in the reals sense of the word?
The Nigerian film industry, just like that in India (bollywood) has its place in world culture. The industry is istill in its infancy and is still paying its dues. Nollywood actors are fortunate enough to live lives beyond the dreams of the average Nigerian, and there are a lot of below average Nigerians who struggle every day for basic necessities in every day Nigeria. Good luck to all of them

You all have made commendable points. While it is true that one must not use USA as its measuring/yard stick, it is imperative at times to do so.  The truth is, in any business in life there are going to be cheaters and victims and Nigeria is no exception. As long as we continue to have greedy people who would not cease to devour hard working people from their dues, this problem would prolong.
I would want to believe that the marketers in Nigeria do not submit to this negative trend. And as My2cents said, the stars are very well off in Nigeria since the oridinary Nigerian cannot afford the luxuries they have.
I am from the Caribbean (studying in the states). In my island $1 US= $2.60EC(eastern caribbean dollar). Back home We all thought things were hard. The truth is I was able to live like a queen on my$2500EC per mth teaching salary, but not is "catching my behind" trying to live on $3000+ US(per mth). So all is not always greener on the other side. The cash flow may not be great there but the cost of living here is brutal.
Nollywood is a baby, please give it time to mature into an adult and then we would see the fruits of its labour. In time Nollywood would be able to reward large sums of money to its players just like Hollywood, afterall Nollywood stars are professionals unlike these over-sexed, drugged out monotonus, paranoid freaks that are byproducts of Hollywood.
