I wonder which professional career is the most rewarding in Nigeria. Is it medicine, petroleum engineering, telecommunications, or something else?

I'd like to say "entrepreneurship" but it's not a professional career. I think medicine is over-rated in terms of what doctors actually earn and telecommunications only pays the few that work in banks. As for petroleum engineering, it's probably lucrative because of the oil industry, but may not even be the most lucrative oil job since oil companies also employ geologists, engineers in all fields, and even doctors and drivers.

So, which professional career would you say is the most lucrative in Nigeria? How much can one earn with it?

i will rather not isolate petroleum engineering as u rightly pointed out, the oil industries employ other scientists/engrs. the oil industry pays the most, though the telecom guys tend to catch up with years of experience.
It is really difficult to determine the highest paying oil company, since the welfare package affects the total pay. Shell starts graduates with about 3 Million per annum exclusive of tax. this is the pay whether u are employed in naija or from abroad. I know elf raises the salary a bit if the employment is from the UK. where the oil guys get most of their money is from allowances. this brings companies like schlumberger, haliburton and baker hughes to the fore front. Graduates in schlumberger can get up to 350k a month, and that will definitely increase if u are a field staff.

telecom guys should be within 190k - 220k exclusive of tax for starters

Doctors working in public and private hospitals don't get as much as their counterparts in the oil industries. the only escape route for doctors then was to travel abroad but the system is messed up now in the UK, usa might be the best option for doctors seeking a higher pay.

if the telecom guy can deliver, you can't earn up to 100k some ppl there earn as low as 25k a month

i belief information technology is the ever rising demanding entity in todays world of increasing technology, considering the fact that no matter how small an enterprise seem to be, the use of applications and management of data (database) as well as network infrastructures in no doubt is indespensable if efficiency is needed. however there are very few proffesionals in the sector whic makes it very PAYING.

I agree with you to say its entrepreneurship unfortunately it is not a profession. I happen to work in the oil industry, you will be surprised when you hear what some people earn, all the noise people make about the oil industry at times will make you sad, so many Nigerians would do anything to get into the oil industry leaving their talents inside. We all love going for the things are are "reigning" if i may put it that way, we do not cherish our individual ingenuity,
As regards Medicine i totally agree with you; that profession is highly overrated.
Information Technology is stepping higher and higher but only because there are still very few people who are actually professionals. It may yet become one of the highest paying sector in the very near future

I believe is too dangerous to be answering "yes sir, no sir" to anyone. You can get fired anyday, office politics, having to associate with people you don't particularly like etc

Become an entrepreneur but if you absolutely must get a job (and only to gain experience) get into telecomms. That is the future.

In naija salaries are not confidential but most places abroad it is. If u are in nigeria and working for an operating company, u must have worked for few years to get that lot (except u were employed by elf directly from the uk after your MSc). Service firms pay that much too. if u are abroad, then it is the normal salary (after tax) for entry level.

I agree especially if it is one of these youngsters from bible colleges who are obssessed with exploiting vulnerable nigerians. I can't understand this 'craze' of being a G.O of a church. Little wonder there are too many churches in naija.

Although not all churches are into that, I attend a pentecostal church where tithing is not overtly stressed, rather the church ameliorates the financial burdens of her members.

If u are a young grad who is being tempted into this 'sinful act', please have a change of mind, and try banks, telecoms, oil firms or better still, travel abroad.

, well, youre not going to believe this, but if making money is your goal, Danfo driving is really the way to go. Some ppl call it entrepreneurship or wotever. I call it getting paid. However, if your goal is to impress your friends & family member, you might want to consider telecom, biochem or even politics.

I know what you are trying to do:-) You want to unmask me . No way! I am sorry, I won't be specific for personal reasons. For your info people are different. The way I manage my income is different from the way you handle yours. I don't get carried away and go on unnecessary spending spree! I am a member of our cooperative society and I authorised a monthly deduction of 100K from my salary. If I need money for any special need, all I do is make a special withdrawal from my savings. The only loan I have taken from the company was a car loan and that was 2years after I was employed. So my friend, when you are opportuned to work in a 'high-paying' company please plan your finances otherwise you would regret it. A lot of my colleagues drive brand new KIA cars and I lot have had them snatched or stolen. We should know that a salary earner is different from a contractor. The cost of servicing your assumed status most times eat deeply into our finances. You want more clue? I know you do but I am sorry to dissappoint you

My parents are from Nigeria and my dad is still employed there with the croupt government. I would think that oil industry would be the best but isn't that industry dangerous? Its a shame that all the big corps in Nigeria are owned by white people(correct me if im wrong this is just an assumption but i think its correct) just like here in a America black people are jumping thur hoops to get a job in a corp that is just exploiting labor. In nigeria it would be "cheap" labor. Oil Companys made a PROFIT of over a BILLION DOLLARS(all profit this is minus operating cost) and part of that money is from nigeria. now how much did nigeria see probably about $500,000- $2 Million of it. Assuming that the profit is $1,000,000,000(its well over this but this is an example) and assume $2 Million went to nigeria $2Mill/$1Bill= .002 or .2% of their profits(this is all my question but regardless the point to this is that nigerians arent seeing any of that oil money in road work, food programs, community centers, sewerage development, electicity generation, etc. the whites are taking their money to their swiss accounts and bribing the government with the profits). share the wealth!!!!

I think you are mistaken to some extent.Wage comparison in two different countries should be done with care as these countries have different cost and living standards.
Besides,N350k I think aint equal $350.Use the average exchange rate of $1=N135 and do the math yourself.If you can get N350k in Nigeria as a starter,damn,thats real good.I mean it's excellent considering the cost of living.
I'm yet to find a Nigerian who doesn't have pride in himself.In fact,I personally see Nigerians as the ones in Africa that have got the pride.On a general,Nigerians are poud people.Maybe,you'll need to have a rethink on these issues.
Multinationals shouldn't be banned from doing business.What is needed is a reformation of the business protocols.Your idea,sorry to say,from an economic point of view doesn't have any base.It will shackle the economy into shackles if allowed to be implemented.

I made a mistake about the wage i erased it earlier this morning its about $2000 a month. That is a good wage starting wage for the economy. Oil is a limited resource and for now Nigeria has it. America is in Iraq right now for this resource Shell and Cheveron has killed Nigerians for this resource that is how much power oil has over some people. what i am saying is that if you want to do business in Nigeria pay attention to the surroundings such as the pollution you are causing, give to charities that will do something for the community, give scholarships, HIV/AIDS awareness programs, basically re-invest in something other than the Shell executives. The people living in Nigeria will feel these affects of the polution down the line.The Nigerian Shell workers that work with the oil closely will have health problems will Shell be there for them? I read that a part of the Nigerian government wanted Shell to do some clean up of the envorinment and they refused. A simple way to get Shell to do this would be make pollution standards for companies but that would have to be passed into law and we all know that a little bribing here and there will stop that in its tracks.  Shell will pay whatever Nigeria MAKES them pay Shell will never leave Nigeria until all the oil is gone then where will Nigerias economony be?? 90% of government money is from oil(i think its a high percentage if its not 90%) When the oils gone Nigeria will be a polluted poor 3rd world country Nigerians need to unite and find alternatives to oil as the back bone of there economy.  

And another thing just because its economically sound doesnt make it right. If "John" killed your mother, sister, or brother and 2 years later didnt seem to care that he killed them walked up to you and offered you a job would you take it?

Yeah,I agree with you on what you just said.The oil firms are really making the Niger Delta ecologically uninhabitable.These guys make millions of dollars from the Nigerian oil reserve.They have got to make ways for compensations.They need to ensure they deal fairly with the host communities and country at large.
We also have got to play our part.We should hope for the best anyway.

I bear no ill-will towards the oil companies:
- If they were not mining our oil, imported items like computers, VSATs, and rice would be more expensive.
- We would also have to import petrol and kerosine, which would make them much more expensive.
- And we would have to pay more tax, since the government won't have oil revenues to rely on.

The problem the Niger Delta people are failing is a lack of a fair judicial system to enable Niger Delta farmers and fishermen to obtain fair compensation for the negative effects of this beneficial mining activity. That's all.

Without the existence of a fair judicial system, the oil companies cannot pay huge sums of compensation money to local farmers and fishermen. If oil company A keeps paying out huge sums of money to Niger Deltans and oil company B does not, then oil company A would eventually be driven out of business. A fair arbitrator is needed.

So if you work for an oil company, you have every right to be happy with yourself. You're an asset to Nigeria.
