you have a valid question there but u already answered it in the highlighted part.
I think back in the days we didn't used to care much about who had longer hair since we weren't exposed to the western world where women have their hair to their butts. lol now that we have seen them, we aspire to achieve the same look through artificial means and even sometimes natural means (count how many "miracle hair growth" products are out there etc )
and about the hairstyles, it's the same idea. people will prefer a western type flowy hair to shuku or patewo hairstyle women in the village wear. it's "modernization" globalization or whatever.

just go with the flow i guess and if you aren't comfortable going with the flow, do your own (and maybe others will join you).
