Ondo varsity gets new Vice Chancellor
From Niyi Bello, Akure

GOVERNOR Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State has approved the recommendation of the Governing Council of state-owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, naming his younger brother, Prof. Nahzeem Olufemi Mimiko, as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the institution.

Mimiko, a professor of Political Science who specialises in Political Economy and International Relations, was to be named for the position in April 2006 when he was also recommended by a panel set up by government to shop for a new head for the institution but was rejected inexplicably by the then administration of Dr. Olusegun Agagu.

Even though Prof. Mimiko emerged as the most qualified candidate in 2006, having contested the position during his tenure as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution, his brother's involvement in the race to the Ondo Government House, was fingered as the main reason for his rejection by the Agagu administration.

The governor was reportedly swayed in the choice of Mimiko by the fact that he clearly emerged as the preferred candidate from the long list of contestants shortlisted by the panel and the need to have the best for the institution.

A statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the university signed by Mr. Bamidele Olotu stated that Prof. Mimiko, a thorough academic of international standards, was chosen purely on merits.

It added: "Following interviews conducted on campus by a joint Council and Senate Selection Board last week Thursday, 17th and Friday, 18th December, 2009, the Governing Council of Adekunle Ajasin University unanimously recommended the leading three of the 14 applicants to the Visitor for him to choose one of them as the university's next Vice-Chancellor in line with the University Law. (Schedule 1, Section 7).

"The Visitor has now announced through the Chairman of the Governing Council his gracious choice of Prof. Nahzeem Oluwafemi Mimiko, who was unanimously ranked number one by all the members of the Selection Board, including the consultant as the university's new Vice-Chancellor.

"Until his appointment, Professor Mimiko was the Head, Department of Political Science, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. He holds a B.Sc. Social Sciences (Political Science) degree, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in International Relations, all from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

"He was at different times a Social Science Research Council, MacArthur Foundation; Visiting Scholar at the Thomas J. Watson Jr. Institute for International Studies, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA, and the Korean Foundation Visiting Fellow to the Academy of Korean Studies, Seoul, South Korea.

"He was also a Visiting Professor at the Department of Social Sciences, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, USA. He is a Fulbright Scholar and winner of the United States Army Public Service Award.

"Professor Mimiko, 49, has more than 60 publications. He is Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Policy Initiatives; and Convener, Africa Research Initiative. He was at different times Head of Department, Acting Dean of Faculty, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Acting Vice-Chancellor at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko. He is married with children."

Even under Agagu, Prof. Olufemi Mimiko was acting VC.
The guy worked for it.
Check your fact before you bring in sentiment and nepotism.

Yes, the guy worked for it but so did others who are also qualified. I would not appoint my brother as the VC of the university I am the visitor to. It does not sound ethical. If Nigerian politics were issues-based, the opposition will eat him raw.

Before Mimiko become the governor Agagu had already appointed Mimiko's brother as the acting vc that means the man is qualified, if it happens to be you, your brothers name top the list of three people to be appointed for a post which he qualify for, who will you choose, even if your brother is the last on the list. It's not a matter of Nigeria only it can happen anywhere.

You guys shouldn't just jump to conclusions without understanding the issue on ground.
I know what I'm talking about because I finished from the school. Like someone mentioned before, this same Mimiko was appointed as the acting Vice Chancellor by Agagu's government. He is more than qualified for the job and I'm quite certain that he would have emerged as the VC even if his brother is not the governor.
Blood relationship with a government official should not automatically entitle anyone for a position he is not qualified for. on the other hand, blood relationship should not automatically disqualify someone if he is eminently qualified for such position. To demand such will amount to hypocrisy and reverse-nepotism.
BTW, I'm not a supporter of either Olufemi or Olusegun Mimiko, just an objective observer.

In 2006, the brother was the VC? Then get your facts right - Femi Mimiko became Ag. Vice Chancellor in 2005 when his brother was in charge of appointments in the government of Ondo State. Yes, Segun Mimiko was then the Secretary to the Ondo State government and ratified his brother's appointment as Ag. Vice Chancellor even though his professorship was less than 2 years old as at that time. even from your argument that Agagu government made him Ag. VC (since Segun Mimiko as Secretary to Government needed Agagu's approval all the same) faulted the earlier submission that Agagu prevented him from becoming VC (when you all concur that his government made him Ag. VC). SImple fact here irrespective of the spin or the numbers of internet rats paid to re-write history is that nepotism is at work. More importantly, who set up the committee that assessed Prof. Femi Mimiko and concluded that he was the best?

Well facts show that Prof. Femi Mimiko in fact selected the committee members for his brother's endorsement and that the committee members were regular visitors to his house before, during and after the selection exercise - so why won't he come 'top' in the selection exercise?

Lastly, it is shameful how Nigerians can take corrupt arguments to the next level - for instance, in a free and fair selection process devoid of any 'blood brother' factor, can any one of you swear by Ayelala that if Prof. Femi Mimiko contest with other qualified Nigerians or even just indigenes of Ondo State who are equally qualified, he would still come out number one? I am sure none of you will swear to Ayelala on this. So, let us shut up - enough of spin on what is bad, please.

@Ray, Ayelala bawo? No need to swear bro. From ur obvious interest in this thing and the diety u r invokin, shows u are from the said Ondo State. I wont claim to have all the facts at hand but i knew that Femi Mimiko surely was about to become the substantive VC of Akungba but Agagu refused to confirm him because of his brother's political leaning. So that means the wrong done him by Agagu was corrected, unfortunately it had to be by his own brother. Any other gov could have done it.
Anyway i dont even know why we are arguin over this, afterall ole ni gbogbo won
