Seun, this is another innovative idea to help the less privilege. I say a big YES to this.

this DON'T have nothing to do with Seun sir. Its an effort from members of this forum

BootyOnMe:

Now that the excitement has 'fizzled'. . . .it is quite humbling to see what a pasltry sum is required to get this family off the streets for now.

The main concern is what miracle will empower this family on the long run to keep them off the streets for good!

Or is NL gonna adopt them for ever? undecided

Is this the beginning of an end. . . or the end of a beginning?

we are setting him and his wife up with a business and he will take it from there

I am in support and would be willing to make regular donations.
However there are some appeals I have to make-

When going into a venture you should anticipate criticism, even insults. Please do not get tempted to respond in a similar tone it is not worth it.

Whatever option you choose the most important thing is to ensure that majority of the funds go directly to the needy and not on bureaucratic issues.

Re: Nairaland Charity Organisation- E-Helpers Network by Freiburger(m): 10:16am On Dec 07, 2011
I think r231 will come up with it very soon, while we also deliberate over it out here. But i'm personally for reaching out to the orphanage homes. what do you think?

NAIRALANDING CHARITY ORG. - BRAINSTORMING ON THE FUTURE
Folks,

The question here appears not to be "What do you think on Nairaland Charity Org.?" again but 'when to start', as the votes here have been overwhelmingly in favour of Nairaland having such.

Even before the formalization of the Charity Group, we have already successfully carried out our flagship project: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-801338.1344.html#msg9711739. To God be the glory.

Now, with us almost through will the Obuhs, we can focus on formalizing and structuring the Group and deciding on key issues.

To set the ball rolling, I'm proposing the following:

1, We should clearly define our goals and the name of the Charity
2, We should define our modus operandi - how, when and who do we help? For example, I read in the papers couple of days ago the case of a woman crying to raise 600k or so for his little boy that needed to be operated upon for a tumour or so urgently. We can donate like 50k to such things. This is just an example.

3, We should appoint a management team of like 4-5 Nairalanders to run the Charity group(President/Coordinator, Treasurers etc)
4, All cases of charity must be first discussed and screened on Nairaland by all members before we go ahead to assist
5, Anybody can bring a case up, either heard from radio/TV or read from newspapers, but we will always physically confirm before assisting, to avoid scam
6, Are we going to have regular contributions or raise funds as case comes up or both?

Somebody(I nominate r231) to moderate this discussion so that we have a sense of direction and prevent it from drifting off tangent. He will also summarize decisions from time to time and declare it closed.

Let's give ourselves timeline, say till Dec 31, to reach a final decision and lock it, so that actions can begin.

Oya, let's get the ideas flowing,

NB: N43,900 has been carried forward from the Obuh's fundraising. That is the balance in Nigeria a/c now. r231 will report on the balance in paypal and we will have idea on how much we have in the coffers of the Group for start.

Reporting. . . . . .

This is the team that worked on the Oburs project

Jarus, r231, OAM4J, yamakuza, Ifyalways, OlowoTee

and I believe we intend to keep it that way but we require one or two more helping hand preferable in Nigeria that can donate some of their time to work hand in hand with Ifyalways and OlowoTee

Any suggestion

Let's bring in 2 more people.
Let interested Nairalanders show interest here, who must be regular posters not once-a-week posters. Location? I think Lagos will be preferable. Should be willing to spare his/her time for physical inspections.

Any suggestion

even though its Lagos, it doesn't mean we cant help anywhere in Nigeria or outside of Nigeria

so far our reps are willing to travel

when we did meneks project, he lives in PH and things still get done

Re: Nairaland Charity Organisation- E-Helpers Network by Nobody: 2:47pm On Dec 07, 2011
Let's decide on structure.

I suggest we structure the Group thus:
1, Coordinator(CC): Can be Nigeria- or abroad-based; should be a very active Nairalander, not fringe one.
2, Assistant Coordinator(AC):: Can also be anywhere-based, should also be regular Nairalander, to be running things when coordinator is unavoidably busy or to assist him when still around
3, Fund Custodian - home(FC-H) - To coordinate fund-raising in Nigeria and report on regular basis
4, Fund Custodian - abroad(FC-A) To coordinate fund-raising abroad and report on regualr basis
5, Project lead(PL): To physically confirm and lead projects; must be in Nigeria, ready to devote time for the exercises
6, Assistant Project Lead 1(APL-1): Same as above. To work with PL
7, Assistant Project Lead 2(APL-2): Part of the field team
8, Project reviewers : All Nairalanders, but more particularly donors, to examine prospective cases(as a thread on NL) and deliberate on whether we should go ahead or not.

Notes:
- 5, 6 and 7 must be Nigeria-based and possibly live in different parts of Lagos
- Some roles may be merged e.g if the coordinator is abroad-based, can also be the FC(abroad)
- aside the standing team, we may need to bring in new Nairalanders on adhoc basis as occasion demands, e.g if we have to verify a case in Kano or Ibadan, we will need to bring in trusted Nairalanders in these places to work with.
- If chanced, any member of the exco that is Nigeria-based, will be part of the inspection/confirmation/field team along with the 5, 6 and 7,

Also note that the structure/nomenclature above is just an idea to start with; your suggestions on tinkering with them are welcome.

Bookmarked. . .

While at it can we open the floor to all NLDers to bring forward any news of people that are in urgent needs and requires help?

School fees for an Orphan
Wheelchair
Donating to the motherless homes
Hospital bill
etc.
Re: Nairaland Charity Organisation- E-Helpers Network by Nobody: 3:56pm On Dec 07, 2011
Sure, anybody can bring up a case, but has to be physically verified and weighed(not a case of fake kidney patients that cries for help with some fake plasters/bandages in the afternoon and use the money to buy weed in the evening grin) But our major sources shall be media reports.

I personally have a bias for urgent medical needs; nothing moves me more than cry for money to do operations in hospital. There are a number of critical cases I read in papers from time to time, and our token, like 50k or more or less, can be helpful.

We will focus more on helping the helpless in the society.

We will take each case up as soon as the case is brought to our attention and we verified the case to be genuine.

On structure:

I support r231 as the coordinator

he has also been the Fund Custodian - abroad, dunno if he wanna leave that to jay bee

Jarus should also continue as Fund Custodian - home

If Ifyalways and olowotee are still available I will also suggest they remain among our project leaders

I will also want to see see the following in the operation/decision board: Freiburger, yamakuza and odunnu (I think yamakuza will be a good secretary)

Whatever we do let's make the team maximum of 12 people.

YAMAKUZA
FREIBURGER
OLOWOTEE
ODUNNU

4 more preferably in Nigeria plus have to meet the requirement specified by Jarus earlier

Can you sort the above by home or abroad-based.

Can we bring I Odunnu and Ronkebp who have also expressed interest?
Re: Nairaland Charity Organisation- E-Helpers Network by Nobody: 5:50pm On Dec 07, 2011
I support  r231 as coordinator and FC-abroad.
I nominate OAM4J as Assistant Coordinator.

I accept the FC-Nigeria role and will also be available to assist the field/project team.

Ifyalways is our best bet for project team lead but she is usually in and out of Nigeria, but if she takes it, we will be grateful.
