The people I am addressing do not respond to niceness. They respond to: ban!

Adverts can be posted in the Technology Market.

I'm sorry, but nairaland cannot condone software piracy. Not in the era of quality open source software!

HABA SEUN,

This issue get advantages and disadvantages. seun dey try protect d image of this website and 2 pose as a good Nigerian. Even if them ban people for the site. them go dey go anonymous. if i had the cash i could have hosted a site like this but base on computer tech n its related stuff. i am sure those of u using foreign computer forums know abt the broad knowledge and databases they have.

if anyone is up to the task i suggest he/she should host his own site n n allow what we all are craving for.

if we nor share our knowledge no matter how bad the knowledge be how we want to progress.
Re: Forbidden: Adverts, Cracks, Illegal Hacks, Software Piracy, Etc by Nobody: 4:18pm On Feb 11, 2008
i guess i'll add my two bits.

theres an issue alot of the infuriated posters are overlooking. nairaland is not a warez forum, and was never intended to be a warez forum. if seun had decided to set up nairaland as a warez forum, his contact details etal would not be public knowledge.

while most of us are anonymous, seun is not. it is seun that will take the heat if MS, Adobe, Autodesk or any of the members of the BSA begin to finger nairaland as a computer piracy website.

sounds paranoid? well i believe it can happen. especially when you consider that this is nigeria, full of incompetent regulatory agencies looking for thier spot in the papers. more to the point, this being nigeria, where multinationals can act with impunity (using nigerian police) it's not too far fetched to picture MS hiring soe police to come and 'raid' nairaland - the 'pirate website' 'haven of copyright infringement' (thats how they'll play it in the papers.

justa paranoiac's view. . .

@oyb

your post about agencies holding seun responsible makes sense-on paper ( er, screen) at least. the truth is, naija agencies cant care less what links are posted cos they are halfhearted in their job. we dont really need nairaland to find warez. except if the government is going to either filter the internet or block it up entirely. pirated software are openly sold on the streets just about anywhere you go, and people make copies and pass them on via USB, cd/dvd R, external hdd and any other media of their choosing. unless and until the 'agencies' take the fight to the streets i dont see anybody giving a hoover dam what the agencies say in the newspapers. and i dont see any harm in posting linx to warez.
Re: Forbidden: Adverts, Cracks, Illegal Hacks, Software Piracy, Etc by Nobody: 1:10pm On Feb 18, 2008
@ neoteny,

don't b too sure about that - everyonce in a while, NCC raids alaba. there was a fellow, ( i forget his name- he was the main retikler of pirated software back then ) who was busted a few years back. the BSA have been advertising on lagos radio stations. some years back ,my former employer was harrassed by a licensed autodesk vendor, so he had to switch to licensed versions of autodesk products. angry. what was really annoying about it is that it cost more to buy autodesk products in naija than in us, and you must buy from the nigerian dealer angry

http://w3.bsa.org/southafrica/press/newsreleases/FIRST-INTERSTATE-BANK-RAIDED-FOR-SOFTWARE-PIRACY.cfm

The management of First Interstate Merchant Bank Plc. (FIMB) hurriedly paid a total sum of N3.8 million as license fee and damages to forestall their computers and other software from being carted away by officers of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and court officials. This was in a raid carried out at the bank’s headquarters on 2/4, Davies Street, off Marina, Lagos on Friday, March 8th, 2002.

The raid which was led by Barrister Toyin Subair, counsel to the Business Software Alliance in Nigeria.

FIMB, alongside some identified banks, had actually been using pirated copies of Microsoft software in contravention of Section 14 and 17 of the Nigerian Copyright Act.

According to Mr. Subair, the management of FIMB had been informed via writing since December 2001 to regularise the use of the said software but had up till the time of the raid failed to comply. The raid, which was backed by a court order, was eventful as copyright officers, court bailiff and the BSA counsel found their way to the computer room, secured it and were about to dismantle the systems before the management entered into discussions which finally culminated into the payment for the license and damage cost.

The raid, a major boost against the use of pirated software in Nigeria, came on the heel of an Anton Pillar order granted by the Federal High Court enabling the plaintiff to procure the infringing items, contrivance and materials employed by the bank in breach of the plaintiff’s copyright.

This is the second time such a raid will be effected by the NCC in conjunction with BSA in Nigeria. The first major establishment to witness such an action was James Cubbit, a leading architectural firm in December 2001.

Speaking on the raid, Subair said the raid is not supposed to be punitive but to make end users of software be responsible enough to regularise the use of the products. He hinted that further raids are in the pipeline to be carried out on other banks and institutions infringing the intellectual property rights of BSA member companies in days to come.

this happened eight years ago, and it can still happen today.

like i said, i a a hardened warez user, but i always have this mantra in the back of my mind - everyday for the thief . . .

everyonce in a while, some one in any of these agencies decides to show that 'we are working' it could be one of those times that the ish will go down. . .
Re: Forbidden: Adverts, Cracks, Illegal Hacks, Software Piracy, Etc by Neoteny(m): 12:41pm On Feb 19, 2008
im familiar with that raid. it was in pcworld west africa in 2001. they do target corporations every now and then when their coffers dwindle but targeting individuals is still distant away. at least i hope so. cant see me paying $200 or more for what ought to be cheaper. if the open source community can give it free, why pay so much for what essentially is bloatware? thank god adobe reader 8 is free. its over 20mb in size! and yet foxit reader with essentially the same features is 2mb and it loads and installs faster. BLOATWARE is cussed.

I would purchase a licensed software if i earn more than that in a month,
And u tell me, hw is that gon happen?to buy a Windows OS for a thousand dols, who earns that in a mnth, d NCC boss? :gush:

Hope? You want Nairaland to risk significant liabilities based on hope? You've got to be joking!
