Celebrities / 5 Things Nigerian Youths Can Learn From Hushpuppi’s Ordeal by Nigeria2day(m): 8:26am On Jul 06, 2020 |
The Dubai Police of the United Arab Emirates arrested Hushpuppi, Nigeria’s Malaysian-based “Yahoo Boy”, on June 10, 2020, and the video of his arrest went viral. Hushpuppi is arguably Nigeria’s richest cyber fraudster, as he always flaunts his luxurious life by posting images on the Social Media displaying his expensive posh cars, designer fashion and accessories, lodging in extravagant hotels and clubs, as well as expensive drinks. Hushpuppi’s real name is Ramoni Igbalode. He was born and bred in Lagos. Meanwhile, he is also known as Raymond Igbalodely. This 38-year old, also known as Aja Puppi or Aja 4 is just 80 million naira short of being a billionaire (in dollar terms). However, Hushpuppi was traced by the name Raymond Abbas, which is likely to be his real name by the Dubai Police. The UAE’s online newspaper, The National reported that Hushpuppi and his gang of 12 accomplices were arrested for allegedly defrauding over 1.8 million people through the internet. According to a senior prosecutor at the Dubai Public Prosecution, where they were interrogated before extradition to the United States, “they would send out letters from email addresses almost identical to those legitimate companies targeting customers of these companies with the purpose of diverting payments to themselves”. He has now been charged and awaiting trial in the United States. Many expect that justice shall be served and serve as a lesson for all perpetuating fraud via the internet. For all it’s worth, it is hoped that Nigerian youths desperate for a quick break could learn a thing or two from Hushpuppi and how he ended. If he teaches Nigerian youths anything, let it be that he was a posterboy for internet fraud and that all that glitters is not gold. Beyond those, here are 5 things for Nigerian youths to learn from Hushpuppi’s predicament. Read the lessons here https://nigeriatodaynews.ng/5-things-nigerian-youths-should-learn/

Obviously, we are putting different plans together to see what we are going to be able to do. At the moment the uncertainty is still big as well. Celebrities / Is Burna Boy Really The Best Thing That Happened To Naija Music Since Fela? by Nigeria2day(m): 9:24am On Feb 13, 2020 |
By Jonah Nwokpoku (www.nigeriatodaynews.com) Afrobeat sensation, Burna Boy is trending on Twitter Thursday morning, because of the claim he made about being the best to happen to Afrobeat (Nigerian music) since Fela Anikulapokuti. According to a tweet, which many found rather arrogant, Burna claimed he was the best in the industry and even the "Best" knew he was the best. FACT! I always knew I was and I am THE BEST. Everyone you think is the best KNOWS I’m BEST since Fela Kuti. But @timayatimaya told me something a long time ago that made me not care about being the best. “The World can do without the Best” the world will still spin regardless. — Burna Boy (@burnaboy) February 12, 2020 Of course, many of his followers found this offensive, as one of them replied: "There is nothing you’ve done that no Nigeria artist has done man so you brought nothing here man you are just part of the people that push afrobeat to the world. So you did not set any table a lot of artists have already set it before you started getting ur fame last 2 years!!". But Burna would not budge, as he replied: Lol. NOBODY paved shit for me. Everybody dey find them own. I bin Out here, if you knew the way they made us look weak by begging and paying the western world to like us you will see that no table was set and I’m the one that brought you the Respect you currently enjoy. https:///oPS1HjPrEl — Burna Boy (@burnaboy) February 12, 2020 And the argument continued, with a majority disapproving of Burna's claim to the crown of Nigerian music. But is Burna really the best to happen to Nigerian music? Well, opinions would continue to be diverse in answering this question. While there is no gainsaying the fact that Burna has done well for himself over the past two-three years, such claim is a disservice to the pioneers who spearheaded the evolution of the industry at little to no incentives. In fact, people like Tubaba could easily lay claim to this crown, along with his Plantashun Boyz crew. There were others like Paul Play, Sunny Nneji, Dare Art Alade and hundreds of others, not forgetting thousands of other fallen disciples of the craft. Even in recent times, people like Wizkid, Davido, Banky W etc, have contributed immensely to the incredible growth of the industry with a short span of time. Every one of them, including those who didn't achieve enormous success, brought their talents and influence to bear on the industry. It is not right for one person to lay claim to this success. But then again, there is context to everything. Perhaps, there is a context to which Burna made the claims, for which his avid fans and otherwise would be expecting an explanation in the coming days.

Nairaland / General / CORONAVIRUS: China To Build A Hospital In 10 Days by Nigeria2day(m): 2:18pm On Jan 24, 2020 |
China is currently rushing to build a new hospital in 10 days in order to treat patients at the epicentre of a deadly virus outbreak that has affected her citizens, state media reported Friday. The facility in the central city of Wuhan is expected to commence usage by February 3 to serve a growing number of patients infected by a coronavirus that has taken the lives of at least 26 people and millions are currently on lockdown in an effort to discontinue the spread. Dozens of excavators and trucks were filmed working on the site by state broadcaster CCTV. It will have a capacity of a thousand beds spread over 25,000 square metres, the official Xinhua news agency explained. Construction began as a result of paucity of sickbeds in hospitals designated as dealing with the outbreak, which has now infected 830 citizens of China. Xinhua said the new facility is aimed at “alleviating the shortage of medical treatment resources and improving the ability to care for patients”. Chinese officials have said the virus likely originated from wild animals at a seafood market in the city but it has since spread to several countries around Asia. TV/Movies / FRIDAY MOVIES: 3 Reasons “truth” Tops Nigerian TV Series Bingelist by Nigeria2day(m): 9:51am On Jan 24, 2020 |
If you’re a fan of new school Nollywood and enjoy a good crime-drama, then Truth is definitely worth adding to your Showmax bingelist. Truth opens with the death of Rotimi Bakare: upwardly mobile, the life of the party and the favourite child of his wealthy and influential mother. At first glance, he appears to have died of a drug overdose, but investigations soon prove otherwise leaving everyone a suspect. Truth is co-produced by Adaora Mbelu and Anis Halloway, who also directed the series. Here are four reasons to watch: 1. The twisty plot Rotimi’s family and friends all appear to have something to hide in the wake of his death, leaving the show rife with interesting twists. There’s also some comic relief with officers Bolaji and Sam, whose non-committal attitude to work is all too familiar and in stark contrast to their superiors, the dedicated and sophisticated detective Dan and his superior, Inspector Ann. 2. The all-star cast, including Sola Sobowale If you loved Sola Sobowale in King of Boys, then it’s definitely worth checking her out in Truth. Over the years, Sobowale has reeled us in with her dramatic performances and she’s no different in Truth as she embodies a grieving, tribalistic mother who has lost her favourite son and is at war with her widowed daughter-in-law. Fans of The Men’s Club will also be excited to see Adebukola Oladipupo (Tiara from The Men’s Club) return to the small screen as the charming seductress, Laraba. Truth also features several new school Nollywood favourites like Mawuli Gavor, Ademola Adedoyin, Chy Nwakanma and The Voice’s Osebuka Chike-Ezekpeazu, as well as Nollywood veteran Tina Mba. Sports / Chelsea, Arsenal Match Had No Business Being The Classic It Turned Out To Be by Nigeria2day(m): 11:06am On Jan 22, 2020 |
By Ejike Kanife Don’t get me wrong, every derby has the absolute capacity to turn into a classic. I mean, that’s why we enjoy watching derbies in the first place. Isn’t it? But what we saw last night at Stamford Bridge, especially after the first 26 minutes of the match within which Arsenal’s David Luiz was sent off, that wasn’t supposed to be a classic. Chelsea were by far the more dominant side even before the sending off. They controlled the game, won every tackle and created all the chances. Then there was the red card in the 26th minute and the consequent penalty kick slotted home by Jorginho to put Chelsea in a perfect position to claim all 3 points and claim them with relative ease. On the contrary that was when the game turned into a classic. I started suspecting something disastrous would befall Chelsea when they failed to add to their slim lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Not only did they stop creating the chances, a task they were very prolific at in the first half, but they also started allowing Arsenal pockets of space to mount counter-attacks, depleted as they were. Business / Beyond The Soundbites: 10 Things No One Has Told You About The New Finance Bill by Nigeria2day(m): 11:30am On Jan 20, 2020 |
So, over the past week, the news had been awash of the new Finance Bill. The bill has been described as a fiscal tool aimed at stimulating the fiscal environment and spur growth across all sectors of the economy. While the bill seeks the improvement of the overall economy, the new law has a special focus on driving ease of doing business for small and medium enterprises by alleviating the tax burden. Beyond the soundbites, here at least 7 most important takeaways for the micro, small and medium enterprises operating in Nigeria. 1. There Is No Provision for VAT on Online Transactions: This is one aspect of the new Finance Act that you probably have not heard about. The new Finance Act makes no provision for payment of value-added tax, VAT for an online transaction. Recall that the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS recently announced that it was putting together a framework to enforce collection of VAT on online transactions, by mandating banks to deduct such VAT at source. However, the new law contains no provision in this regard. Read more: http://nigeriatodaynews.com/news/10-things-about-finance-bill

Nigeria's commercial lender, Access Bank Plc is well on its way to becoming the African banking behemoth. Few months after concluding its acquisition of rival Diamond Bank in 2019, the bank said it has secured final approvals of all relevant regulatory authorities in Kenya for the acquisition of Kenya-based Transnational Bank Plc (TNB). The bank said this in a statement to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) signed by its Company Secretary, Mr Sunday Ekwochi. The bank had on October 28, 2019, informed the NSE that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had granted its ‘no objection’ to the bank’s proposed acquisition of majority equity stake in TNB. “We are pleased to announce that the bank has now secured the final approvals of all relevant regulatory authorities in Kenya in respect of the acquisition. “The acquisition is in line with the bank’s strategic objective of becoming Africa’s gateway to the world and ties into its strategy to establish footprints in key African markets.’’ The bank added that the acquisition would further complement its franchise in Rwanda, Congo DRC and Zambia. It noted that “TNB is a medium-sized commercial bank with great focus on the agricultural sector and significant retail footprints.’’ Mr Hebert Wigwe, the bank’s Group Managing Director, was quoted by the statement as saying the “acquisition aligns with its strategy of becoming Africa’s gateway to the world. Sports / REAL VS ATLETICO: If Anybody Ever Deserved A Raise It Must Be Federico Valverde by Nigeria2day(m): 3:16pm On Jan 13, 2020 |
Last night, Real Madrid made it three wins in three straight finals when they defeated Atletico Madrid 4-1 on penalties to lift the Supercopa de Espana (known as the Spanish Super Cup to the English World). But the star of the night, however ignoble his actions might be interpreted to be by some members of the footballing world, was Fede Valverde. His last-minute tackle which stopped the highly in-form Morata dead in clear tracks made sure Real Madrid survived extra time even though with a deficit of one man. While his violent conduct earned him a red card, it probably also won his team the match and, by the looks of it, won him the Man of the Match award. While I’m not sure I support awarding the man of the match to a player who got sent off the game for such violent conduct, I, however, applaud that same conduct to the extent to which it helped win the game for Madrid. A certain Luis Suarez at the 2010 World Cup quickly comes to mind. His own version of the Hand of God saved Uruguay from certain elimination as the Ghanaian, Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting spot-kick. Last night, another Ghanaian, Thomas Partey missed his own spot-kick and right now, it seems to be a Ghanaian affair. It’s a valiant show of sacrifice, something many of us do for our friends, families and businesses. For a young player to have such presence of mind to execute such brutality at a time it was needed most, and at a section of the pitch where it wouldn’t cause his team severe damage, he deserves a huge bonus. He took one for the team and in doing so gave it all. You can read more of Ejike's Sports commentary on http://nigeriatodaynews.com/

Celebrities / Nigeria’s Michael Ugwu To Represent Africa On The Board Of Merlin Network by Nigeria2day(m): 8:33am On Jan 13, 2020 |
The former General Manager of Sony Music West Africa, Michael Ugwu has been appointed into the board of Merlin Network to represent Africa. This makes it the first time a Nigerian will be appointed to the board as the seat has always been previously occupied by South Africa. Merlin is a Europe-based digital rights agency for independent record labels, with a membership of over 20,000 independent record labels and distributors from approximately 62 countries with offices in London, Tokyo and New York. Ugwu, who is the founder and CEO of Nigeria’s pioneer online digital music distributor, Freeme Digital, was one of eight new executives announced last week to represent Africa on Merlin’s 15-member board. Other new executives that joined the board are from Australia, Brazil, the Netherlands, North America and South Korea. The other incoming board members are Alexandria Hock of Better Noise Music; Carlos Mills of Mills Records; Chan Kim of FLUXUS, Inc; Katie Alberts of Reach Records; Marie Clausen of Ninja Tune; Merida Sussex of Stolen Recordings and Pieter van Rijn of FUGA. Jeremy Sirota, a senior member of Facebook's Music Team, has also been appointed CEO to replace Charles Caldas after more than 12 years at the helm. Ugwu described the appointment into the board as an important milestone in the evolution of Nigeria’s music industry and it’s growing acceptance and expanding footprint in the global music scene. He said: “I am humbled by this appointment. It is another testament that the Nigerian music industry is making the expected progress. The talent, hard work and investment in the industry continue to gain deserved recognition. “As far as the Nigerian music industry is concerned, Freeme Digital remains committed to the rights and opportunities of Independents and their artists. And we will continue to expand the scope of opportunities and the frontiers of digital music for the emerging generation of independents and artists in Nigeria and across Africa.” Prior to exiting Sony Music Entertainment West Africa in August 2019 to fully focus on Freeme Digital, Ugwu led Sony’s expansion in West Africa as the General Manager for five years, spearheading unprecedented historic deals for Africa's biggest talents including Davido and Wizkid. He also oversaw the licencing of Sony Music's entire music catalogue to Africa's largest mobile telecommunication network, MTN via the Huawei developed Music Plus service. Ugwu’s footprint into the Nigerian music industry continues to deepen even as Freeme Digital continues to drive digital music distribution for creators across the industry’s value chain, especially with the launch of the Freeme Space in 2018, which is arguably Nigeria’s largest music and content production studio. Ugwu believes that joining the board of Merlin, which has distributed more than $2 billion to its almost 900 members since launching in 2008 and often considered as the 4th major label representing 15% of global music rights, will draw more attention to the growing opportunities of the Nigerian digital music distribution ecosystem. Travel / See Why Nigerians Are No Longer Rushing To The US by Nigeria2day(m): 11:37am On Jan 03, 2020 |
So, it does appear that the United States has eventually found a way to stem the flow of Nigerians into their country. After the embassy of the US in Nigeria increased its visa application fee last year, the number of Nigerians who visited America dropped, according to data from the United States Travel and Tourism Office. Recall that in August 2019, the United States Government had included a repository fee for Nigerians granted a visa under B, F, H1B, I, L, and R classifications. The US Government said that “the reciprocity fee will be charged in addition to the non-immigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, which all applicants pay at the time of application. Nigerian citizens whose applications for a non-immigrant visa are denied will not be charged the new reciprocity fee. “Both reciprocity and MRV fees are non-refundable, and their amounts vary based on visa classification.” Read the full report here http://nigeriatodaynews.com/news/why-nigerians-are-no-longer-rushing-to-the-us

Nairaland / General / 4 Things To Know About US Killing Of Iran's Most Powerful Military Commander by Nigeria2day(m): 9:54am On Jan 03, 2020 |
The operation that led to the killing of Soleimani was entirely planned by the US military, after a go-ahead by the US President Donald Trump. If you checked the microblogging site, Twitter this morning, you would have seen World War 3 trending. Well, the escalating tension between the United States and Iran as a result of the killing of Iran’s most powerful military commander, General Qasem Soleimani, led to the insinuation that a World War III is almost inevitable. Here are five things you need to know about the killing of the top commander: 1. Donald Trump Ordered the Air Strike That Killed the Commander: So, the operation that led to the killing of Soleimani was entirely planned by the US military, after a go-ahead by the US President Donald Trump. He was killed at Baghdad airport, alongside local Iran-backed militias, early on Friday. 2. Soleimani Was Specifically Targeted: As the saying goes, kill the shepherd and the sheep will scatter. That was what the US aimed to achieve with the killing of Soleimani. Soleimani was said to be the architect of most of the crisis rocking the Middle East. According to the BBC, the 62-year old spearheaded Iranian military operations in the Middle East as head of Iran's elite Quds Force. 3. Iran Is Planning A Major Retaliation: Iran is not taking the attack lying low. The Iranian authorities said they are determined to exact revenge on the killing of the officer. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said: "severe revenge awaits the criminals" behind the attack while announcing three days of national mourning. Mohsen Rezaei, the former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, said Iran would take "vigorous revenge on America". A spokesman for the Iranian government said the country's top security body would meeting in a few hours to discuss the "criminal act of attack", reports the BBC. 4. The US Is Celebrating the Killing: The US has called the commander and the Quds Force terrorists and holds them responsible for the deaths of hundreds of US personnel. President Trump tweeted an image of the American flag shortly after the news broke. Surprisingly, global oil prices rose more than 4 per cent in the wake of the strike. 2019 was a remarkable year for the Nigerian film industry. There is no doubt that the Nigerian movie audience and fanatics had their cravings for quality movies fulfilled in 2019. From Ramsey Noah's 'Living in Bondage; Breaking free', to Omoni Oboli's 'Love is War', the Nigerian cinema was satiated with the riveting pleasure of exciting movies all the year-round. We have chronicled the top ten movies that have wowed the audience and placed the Nigerian big screen on the world map in 2019. Check out our list of top 10 movies that made our 2019 remarkable here: 1. Living in Bondage; Breaking Free There is no doubt that Living in Bondage will remain one of the most beautifully made films in Nigeria for a long time. From the opening montage that sees Obinna Omego (played by Enyinna Nwigwe) driving a young girl to a thick forest to behead her, ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ sets an unusual pace that keeps the viewers mind racing back to the events that made the 1992 blockbuster a hit. The Ramsey Noah's directorial debut reeks of sheer suspense and believability. The picture quality and post-production synced with the directorial and acting credits to make it the best film out of Nollywood in 2019. Living in Bondage is estimated to have grossed a whopping 151,654,842 naira since release in November 2019. 2. Love is war Another film that enjoyed good reviews from the moviegoers and buffs alike in 2019 is Omoni Oboli's ‘Love is war’. An interesting political drama that mirrors the violent nature of Nigeria's politicking and electioneering and its catastrophic effect on the people and the economy. Love is War is just as it sounds, a husband and wife (Richard Mofe Damiju and Omoni Oboli) are pitched against each other in a battle for the seat of governorship in Ondo State of Nigeria. Its appearance in the cinemas almost revolutionised the art of filmmaking because of its directorial and production quality. The cast and crew of the film were some of the criteria that made it a sellable project in cinemas. The martial arts, action and good use of lights on the project is quite commendable. The film reunites Tina Mba, Dakore Akande, Adesua Etomi-Wellington and Joke Silva. 4. Baby Steps When a chronic Cassanova gets served with a baby, his carefree rich bachelor lifestyle gets cut short as he delves into emergency parenting. Willis Ikedum’s ‘Baby Steps’ graced the cinema at a time when the audience was looking forward to such hearty laughs and he did well to deliver. Produced and directed by Ikedum, the movie had Enyinna Nwigwe as a Cassanova who has to combine work and flashy lifestyle with raising a baby he never expected to come his way. And with a stunning cast that includes Enyinna Nwigwe, Bimbo Akintola, Segun Arinze, and Mudiaga Ogheneovo, the movie certainly delivered on its promise. The movie had positive reviews from movie critics especially in the movie’s superb directing, excellent acting and rich post-production works. 5. Joba If you are used to watching good Nigerian films, you must have gotten used to the name - Biodun Stephen. She never disappoints. When Joba was released in 2019, it immediately became the talk of the town. It was the rave of the cinema and everyone was rushing to see it. In fact, Joba is such a good movie it has premiered in the UK and other countries. For a cliche story that is already waning with overuse, a story of a childless couple struggling for the fruit of the womb was so superbly told it deserves every point it gets. The movie was positively received by moviegoers and critics alike, especially Biodum Stephen's directing skills. Also worthy of note is Blossom Chukwujekwu's emotional acting and Enado Odigie's performance is just so compelling. The 2019's story of movies in Nigeria would never even start without Joba. Nairaland / General / Rising Debt, Banking Sector Recapitalisation: Three Major Issues That Will Shape by Nigeria2day(m): 3:03pm On Dec 30, 2019 |
The Nigerian economy witnessed almost an uneventful 2019. First, it was characterised by marginal year-on-year Gross Domestic Product, GDP growth – which rose by 0.17 per cent to average 2.28 per cent growth in Q3. There was also the depressing unemployment figures, which stood at 23.1 per cent in Q3, and a return to rising inflation which rose to 11.85 per cent in November - its highest in eight months. The economy, however, saw a few wins. These included the stability in the foreign exchange market, where the naira remained at N360/$1 throughout the year at the parallel market, and the rise in export which climbed 26.5 per cent year-on-year to N2.219 billion in September 2019, boosted by manufacturing. The government was also able to return Nigeria’s budget to its January to December cycle. But going into 2020, here are three issues that are likely to shape the economy: 1. Banking Recapitalisation: 2019 saw the return of Nigeria’s central bank chief, Godwin Emefiele as the governor for the second time. His five-year plan, which he unveiled in March, included a strategic five points agenda that included targeting a double-digit growth in the next 5 years, recapitalisation of the Nigerian banks, development of a regulatory sandbox to test fintech solutions, targeting exports with the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme and increasing BVN enrolment to 100 million. By the end of 2019, the apex bank had already ticked some of these boxes including developing a regulatory sandbox to test fintech solutions. This was launched in December. It has also begun the plan to increase the Bank Verification Number, BVN enrolment by announcing during the last Bankers’ Committee meeting a plan for a BVN 2.0. The plan to target exporters with the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme is already in force. It is highly likely that 2020 will be the year the apex bank will commence the implementation of the plan to recapitalise the Nigerian banking sector. The CBN said the idea is to position Nigerian banks among the top 500 in the world and reduce the impact of a crisis on the financial system. 2. Inflation: The CBN was well on its way to taming inflation to at least a single-digit until September this year. It kept a tight leash on money supply, retaining the benchmark interest rate at 13.5 per cent since March 2019. However, in August 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the apex bank to stop selling foreign exchange to importers of any food item. This would be followed by a partial closure of the land borders by the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS. This triggered food inflation, leading to a hike in inflation to 11.24 per cent in September, from 11.02 per cent in August. In 2020, the apex bank might be forced to revert to a 14 per cent benchmark interest as it adopts a more hawkish stance in its monetary policies to contain the rising inflation. Nigeria’s inflation might also be compounded by the implementation of the new minimum wage as well as the increase in Value Added Tax, VAT from 5 to 7.5 per cent. 3. Debt: Nigeria’s rising debt profile has been a subject of major economic and political discussions in 2019. 2020 will see more discussions around the concerns on the country’s ballooning debt. Nigeria’s debt stood at about N12.603 trillion by December 2015. This was just about the time President Muhammadu Buhari was coming into office. Four years and seven months into his government, the country’s total public debt, according to the Debt Management Office, DMO has risen to N25.7 trillion. Critics believe piling on the debt is tightening the noose on Nigeria’s economic recovery, but the government says borrowing is imperative to build the catalytic infrastructure needed to set the economy on the path of growth. The government also argues that compared to other economies, debt to GDP which stood at 27.26 per cent in November is still manageable. But not everyone agrees. The International Monetary Fund, IMF says the debts are already at a risk threshold, and with low revenue and debt service at over 70 per cent, the fund warned in November that Nigeria’s debt remains unsustainable. But by December, the President was back at the National Assembly resubmitting an earlier rejected request for a $29.96 billion loan to fund the execution of some 39 projects across the country. Criticisms had trailed this recent request. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the debt plan, saying the “endless borrowing will lead to endless sorrowing”. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said Nigeria risks bankruptcy over the rising debt. Despite these concerns, analysts believe the Senate will approve the loan request. And unfortunately, it will not be the last debt by this administration. Analysts fear the debt level may reach a crisis proportion as the country risks defaulting on some of the obligations before year-end. What’s your thought on the economy in 2020? Sports / Liverpool Should Be Champions Already, But Who Be Arsenal Where Chelsea Dey Sef? by Nigeria2day(m): 1:13pm On Dec 30, 2019 |
In all my years as a football fan, I’m not sure I’ve seen any team fight for the EPL title as hardly as Liverpool are. I’ve never seen a team need that title as badly. It’s not just incredible that they have been unbeaten halfway into the season, winning all but one of their 20 games, it is how they have managed it. The Liverpool we know is the Liverpool that shows all the promise at the start of the season before magically petering out like mist in the face of sunlight in the middle of it. But this season, the Reds have shown no sign of slowing down, getting stronger and stronger with each game. Last season, Liverpool though losing fewer games than eventual winners, Manchester City, were undone by draws. Last night’s game vs Wolves is the typical kind of match they would easily have drawn. But they stood firm and defended all 3 points resolutely. Grinding out such results has been their MO all season and it is what champions are made of. If any team deserves to be invincible, if any team deserves to smash and extend Arsenal’s 49 games unbeaten run, it must be this Liverpool side. From a team that has it all figured out to a team that seems to be doing trial and error, nobody seems to know what exactly is wrong with Arsenal. But then, it is Arteta’s job to find out and fix it, and I hope he does soon enough. There has been a lot of positives to take home in the two games Arteta has been in charge. From the first game away at Bournemouth, I saw that Arsenal, for the first time in the last 20 months, have a clear strategy for attack. Yes, Aubameyang may have scored Arsenal’s only two goals under Arteta, but other players, most notably Lacazette, could easily have done better. From the second game, I also saw that Arsenal players have the capacity to play their hearts out. For the first time, I saw the team comfortable in defence and doing a hell of a job protecting the keeper, who, as we would later see, clearly doesn’t appreciate the protection. The biggest problem Arteta has is game management. Which is why I won’t fault him for last night’s loss. A manager could only manage a game to the extent to which he has quality players. In central midfield, City has the quality of Fernandinho, Rodrigo, Silva, another Silva, Gundogan, De Bruyne, then we could talk of Fodden. Liverpool has Fabinho, Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum, Chamberlain, Kaita, then we could talk of Lallana. Who do Arsenal have? Xhaka, Torreira and Ozil are the only real quality. And even those are questionable. So, you could imagine taking off Ozil to bring on Willock or Guendouzi whom, if we want to be truthful, couldn’t lace City’s lowest-ranked midfielder Fodden’s boots. But take nothing away from Chelsea. It was a hard-fought victory and as their fans would say, Arsenal na Chelsea wife. The head to head records would disagree though. Nairaland / General / 5 Things No One Has Ever Told You About Christmas by Nigeria2day(m): 11:52am On Dec 24, 2019 |
Christmas has become one of the world’s biggest religious festival. In today’s 21st century, its significance has gone beyond religious, as it has become one of capitalism’s greatest annual event. But what exactly do you know about Christmas? Here are at least 5 things no one has probably told you about the religious festival that has taken over the world. 1. Christmas Means “Mass On Christ’s Day”: If you have been wondering what the term Christmas means, the term describes a religious service by the Catholic church deemed to be the summit of the Christian life. So, this service held to mark the birthday of Christ is dedicated to Christ, who is the author of the Christian faith. So, you now understand why most Christians especially Catholics attend masses on Christmas eve or Christmas morning. Meanwhile, Christmas is not called by that name everywhere. The corresponding terms in other languages include Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. In Germany, it is called Weihnachten which denotes “hallowed night.” 2. Christmas Is No Longer A Christian Event: Although started by Christians, since the early 20th century, Christmas has also been a secular family holiday. It is now observed by Christians and non-Christians alike, devoid of Christian elements, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role. 3. Christmas Is Not A Public Holiday In Israel: Despite Jesus being from Israel, Christmas is not a formal holiday in that country. If you understand the history of Israel, this won’t surprise you. The Israelis are the Jews (God’s chosen people). They practice Judaism and are mainly Jews. So, it is understandable that they don’t celebrate Christmas since they are not Christians. As a matter of fact, the Jews have not recognized Jesus as the messiah that was to come. They are still waiting for that messiah. Israel is not alone. There are at least 34 countries that Christmas isn’t a formal holiday. These include Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (excepting Hong Kong and Macau), the Comoros, Iran and Japan. Others include Kuwait, Laos, Libya, the Maldives, Mauritania, Mongolia, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, the Sahrawi Republic and Saudi Arabia. The list also includes Somalia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Yemen. 4. Some Christian Churches Mark Christmas Officially On January 7: I guess you didn’t see this one coming. December 25th is not Christmas day everywhere across the world. According to Wikipedia, some jurisdictions of the Eastern Orthodox Church, including those of Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Jerusalem, mark feasts using the older Julian calendar. As of 2019, there is a difference of 13 days between the Julian calendar and the modern Gregorian calendar, which is used internationally for most secular purposes. As a result, December 25 on the Julian calendar currently corresponds to January 7 on the calendar used by most governments and people in everyday life. Therefore, the Orthodox Christians mark December 25 (and thus Christmas) on the day that is internationally considered to be January 7. 5. Not All Christians Celebrate Christmas: So, if you are thinking every Christian celebrates Christmas, you are wrong. Millions of Christians do not observe Christmas. Among them are Quakers, Jehovah's Witnesses, and members of the Churches of Christ. Some of the half-dozen Christian faiths that do no celebrate December 25 contend there is nothing in the Bible that says Christ was born on that day. In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses suggest any birthday, even that of Jesus, shouldn't be celebrated, because Jesus wasn’t born on that day, plus the celebration has been stripped of any spirituality and only, therefore, promotes materialism. Nairaland / General / How A Small Agritech Start-up Is Taking On Nigeria’s Adulterated Palm Oil Cabals by Nigeria2day(m): 8:39am On Dec 23, 2019 |
In 2017, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NCDSC arrested some palm oil suppliers in Potiskum, Yobe State and in Jos, Plateau State. The palm oil suppliers were arrested for allegedly adulterating their product with a certain chemical. Their arrests led to the confiscation of samples, which after lab tests conducted by the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, showed traces of high acid, high saponification and high relative density. The state’s coordinator of NAFDAC, Lawal Musa Dadingelma, would later confirm that the adulterated palm oil samples contained dye, which can cause cancer when ingested by humans. News also made the rounds in October this year when the Swiss authorities issued a warning and a recall of ‘Zomi’ and ‘Polifuds’ brand of palm oil from Ghana due to the presence of ‘Sudan IV [scarlet Red]’. Sudan IV, according to experts, is an artificial dye that is known to cause cancer. In the same period, Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission nabbed no fewer than 26 people in Gombe State, for selling adulterated palm oil. President of the National Palm Oil Produce Association of Nigeria also told the Guardian recently that more than half of palm oil eaten in Lagos are adulterated. The adulterated palm oil market is estimated at over 1 billion dollars annually, posing an increased risk of cancer and heart-related diseases to consumers. With an estimated population of over 200 million people, Nigeria consumes roughly 3 million metric tonnes, MT of fats and oils annually with palm oil accounting for approximately 45% of total consumption in 2018, according to a report by professional services firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, PwC. This demand has created a thriving market for an unscrupulous importer cabals cashing out by adulterating the palm oil products to maximise profits at the expense of the health of the society. This challenge has inspired a small start-up in Uzuaku, Abia State Nigeria, KR Foods palm oil to create a solution leveraging technology to tackle palm oil adulteration. The start-up started operations in 2017 but became fully operational in 2018 on a one-ton per day integrated palm oil processing mill. KR Foods leases palm plantation to grow its own palm fruits processes the palm oil in a customised mill, where the products are carefully treated before packaging the unadulterated trans-fat-free palm oil in small and big size plastic bottles for distribution. The plastic bottles have tamper-proof seal and a unique QR code that can be used by consumers to confirm its authenticity – a method that can come handy in the fight against adulteration in the largely fragmented and unregulated palm oil industry. “The market is unregulated and allows the proliferation of adulterated product that is injurious to health and the leading cause of cancer. We are solving the problem of adulteration,” founder and Chief Executive Officer of KR Foods, Ikechukwu Amajuoyi told Nigeria Today in an interview. A graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, where he studied Industrial Chemistry, Amajuoyi had wanted to pursue a career in the oil and gas sector and looked forward to returning to Chevron where he had interned during his undergraduate studies; but after he lost his father to cancer in 2016, he changed his mind and joined the fight against palm oil adulteration with his start-up. He told Nigeria Today that the response to his product has been impressive. Since debuting at the shelves in May 2019, the start-up has produced over 45,000 litres of palm oil, sold over 4,200 bottles in 140 retail stores across 3 major cities in Nigeria, and processes an average of 1 million naira monthly transaction from the sales of palm oil and kernel nuts. “Palm oil adulteration is commonplace across Nigeria. The initial reactions motivated us and validated the idea. To most of our early customers, we are solving a big problem for them and they have stayed with us ever since then,” he said. He added: “Beyond adding value to the palm oil, we are also researching ways of enhancing the value chain by harnessing resources inherent in our waste for bio-gas generation and organic fertiliser for farming.” The impressive growth being recorded by this start-up demonstrates the boundless opportunities that still exist in the neglected palm oil industry in Nigeria. According to a report by India-based Zion Market Research, the global palm oil market was valued at $65.73 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach $92.84 billion in 2021. In the last five years (2014 – 2018), Nigeria consumed 6.6 million metric tonnes, MT of crude palm oil, CPO. Out of the total consumption, local production represented 75% or 4.93 million MT thereby causing reliance on importation for the shortfall of 25% or 1.67 million MT, according to a PwC report on palm oil in 2018. In the early 1960s, Nigeria was the world's largest palm oil producer with a global market share of 43%. Today, it is the 5th largest producer with less than 2% of total global market production of 74.08 million MT. Nigeria used to be the world's largest producer of palm oil The descent started for Nigeria in 1966 when Malaysia and Indonesia surpassed it as the world's largest palm oil producers. Since then, both countries combined produce approximately 80% of total global output, with Indonesia alone responsible for over half i.e. 53.3% of global output, the PwC report further noted. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, if Nigeria had maintained its market dominance in the palm oil industry, the country would have been earning approximately $20 billion annually from cultivation and processing of palm oil as at today. Also, read “Non-oil revenue: Nigeria has no choice but to invest in technology” The emergence of start-ups such as KR Foods is a sign that Nigeria could still push its way back up to the top of the ladder in the global palm oil industry. But for now, the start-up said is concentrating on its early wins. Over the next year, Amajuoyi said the start-up plans “to sell an average of 15,000 bottles monthly”. “Our vision is to be the palm oil brand of choice in every home in Nigeria” Source: http://nigeriatodaynews.com/news/how-a-small-agritech-start-up-is-taking-on-nigeria%E2%80%99s-adulterated-palm-oil-cabals |
Nairaland / General / EXPLAINED: 7 Things You Need To Know About Cbn's New Guide On Bank Charges by Nigeria2day(m): 7:08am On Dec 23, 2019 |
So, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN on Sunday released new guidelines on guide to charges by banks, other financial and no-bank financial institutions, which provides a basis for the application of charges on various products and services offered by banks and other regulated institutions under purview. The new guide replaces the current one which was released in 2017 and will take effect from January 1, 2020. Here are 7 things you need to know about the new guide. 1. Savings Account Holders Will Still Pay Card Maintenance Fee: So, your bank will still charge you for card maintenance fee, despite the review of the charges. What has, however, changed is that you will no longer be changed the N50 card maintenance fee every month. Instead, you will be charged per quarter. This brings your total cost of card maintenance to N200 per year as opposed to N600 per year. 2. Current Account Maintenance Fee (CAMF) Is Now One Naira: First, the current account maintenance fee is strictly for current accounts. Savings account are exempted from paying that. Second, what has changed is that current account holders will no longer pay N50 for every transaction no matter how much is involved. Instead, they will be charged one naira per every 1000 naira. This shall apply to only “for customer induced debit transactions to third parties and transfers or lodgements to the customers’ account in other banks on current accounts only”. Also, the card maintenance fee is scrapped for cards linked to naira-denominated current accounts. 3. ATM Withdrawal Charges Is Now N35: So, this one is straightforward. As against paying N65 when you use other banks’ automated teller machines, ATMs for the fourth time in a month, you will now be charged only N35. 4. Your Debit Card Will Still Cost N1,000: So, your bank charges you 1,000 for a new ATM. If you lose it and need to replace it, they will charge you another 1,000 naira. That remains the same in the new guideline. What has changed, however, is that banks can no longer charge more than 1,000 naira for premium debit cards. And no charge shall be required for pre-paid card loading/unloading. 5. Closing or Reactivating Your Account Should Cost Nothing: Before now, your bank could reactivate your account by simply depositing some money into it. But not so with closing the account. There would be charges. But going forward, there will be no more charges for reactivation or closure of accounts such as savings, current and domiciliary accounts. However, if you walk into your bank and demands a status enquiry such as confirmation letter, letter of non-indebtedness and reference letter, your bank reserves the right to charge you a fee of N500 per request. But no more than that. 6. Your Hardware Token Is Now N2,500: So, right now, banks charge N3,500 for the hardware token used to complete electronic transactions. But the new guideline has mandated the banks to charge no more than a recovery cost of N2,500 per hardware token. Customers will also bear the cost in the event of physical damage, loss of token or replacement after expiration, also subject to a maximum recovery cost of N2,500. Software token, aka, one-time password remains free. 7. USSD Charges Shall Continue to Apply: So, you may recall that sometime in March this year, some telecom companies tried to charge Nigerians N4 for every 20 seconds spent on, Use of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, USSD transactions. Fortunately, the CBN distanced itself from the plan and the Nigerian Communications Commission shut it down almost immediately. That may have accounted for why the CBN didn’t touch the USSD charges in the new guideline. The charges remain the same. Nigeria Today http://nigeriatodaynews.com/news/how-ronaldo%E2%80%99s-towering-header-sent-juventus-to-top-of-serie-a A superb Cristiano Ronaldo header sent Juventus three points clear in Serie A with a 2-1 victory at Sampdoria on Wednesday, as Gianluigi Buffon matched the league appearance record. Ronaldo was denied his second goal by the offside flag late on before Samp scorer Caprari was sent off in stoppage time when he was shown a second yellow card. “The whole team showed the right attitude,” Ronaldo later said. “It was a good goal and I am glad to help the team with another three points. “I had problems with my knee for a month, but that has gone now, and I feel good physically.” It was a special night for Buffon as the veteran goalkeeper equalled Paolo Maldini’s record of 647 Serie A appearances. He has also now set a new Juventus Serie A appearance record of 479 games, one more than Alessandro Del Piero. Nairaland / General / 3 Important Facts You Need To Know About President Trump’s Impeachment by Nigeria2day(m): 6:03am On Dec 19, 2019 |
Nigeria Toady - http://nigeriatodaynews.com/news/3-important-facts-you-need-to-know-about-president-trump%E2%80%99s-impeachment Controversial US President Donald Trump has been impeached by the House of Representatives on Wednesday. His impeachment does not come as a surprise to many as it seemed the obvious outcome of an investigation that lasted for only three months over his attempt to influence a foreign leader to prosecute a political rival. Here are at least three things you need to know about the impeachment. 1. He is still the US President: Unlike in Nigeria where impeachment implies outright ouster from office, the American constitution doesn’t allow for one arm of the parliament to impeach and remove a sitting President. So, for Trump to be removed from office, the Senate would have to convict him on the articles of impeachment relied on by the House to impeach him. And he remains the President until that happens. 2. History is made: Whether Trump is eventually removed from office or not, history has been made – which is what Trump would have loved to avoid. His impeachment is the third in America’s over 200 years of democracy. And it is not always kind. Despite his accomplishment and all, he may still accomplish; he risks being remembered for being impeached from office. 3. It was a single-party impeachment: Every congressman in the United States House of Representatives did not vote to impeach President Trump. But the opposition, Democratic Party holds the majority in the House, making it rather easy to the impeachment done. During the impeachment vote, House of Representatives voted almost entirely along party lines — 230-197-1 — to charge Trump with abuse of power, and it followed it up with a 229-198-1 vote to charge Trump with obstruction of Congress.
