Phones / Iphone 14 Pro's Lightning Connector Still Limited To USB 2.0 Speeds (updatehubs) by olukiesy(m): 6:52am On Sep 17, 2022
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models feature an upgraded rear camera system that can shoot 48-megapixel ProRAW photos, which retain more detail in the image file for more editing flexibility. 48-megapixel ProRAW photos are very large files that clock in at around 75MB each, according to Apple, and sometimes even larger.

Despite these very large image sizes, we have confirmed that the Lightning connector on the iPhone 14 Pro models remains limited to USB 2.0 speeds of up to 480 Mbps like previous models, meaning that transferring full-resolution 48-megapixel ProRAW photos to a Mac or other device with a Lightning cable will take a long time.

Apple recommends using iCloud Photos to access ProRAW files in full resolution on a Mac or other Apple devices, or to transfer the photos off an iPhone wirelessly by using AirDrop, but the Lightning connector certainly remains a bottleneck.

Back in 2015, the original iPad Pro's Lightning connector supported USB 3.0, which was capable of up to 5 Gbps speeds based on the spec at the time, but Apple has evidently chosen not to move in this direction for the iPhone. Fortunately, rumors suggest that all iPhone 15 models will be equipped with a USB-C port instead of Lightning, which should result in speeds up to 10 Gbps or even up to 40 Gbps with Thunderbolt 3 support.

Foreign Affairs / Facebook Violates Its Own Rules To Allow Some Calls For Violence Against Russian by olukiesy(m): 3:39pm On Mar 13, 2022
The meta-platform will allow Facebook and Instagram users from certain countries to call for violence against Russians and Russian soldiers amid the invasion of Ukraine, according to internal emails seen by Reuters on Thursday, a temporary shift in political discourse.

The social media company is also temporarily allowing some posts that call for death to Russian President Vladimir Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in countries including Russia, Ukraine and Poland, according to internal emails to its content moderators.

"As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine we have temporarily made allowances for forms of political expression that would normally violate our rules like violent speech such as 'death to the Russian invaders.' We still won't allow credible calls for violence against Russian civilians," a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.

The calls for the leaders' deaths will be allowed unless they contain other targets or have two credibility indicators, such as location or method, the email said, in a recent change to the company rules on violence and incitement.

The temporary policy changes on calls for violence to Russian soldiers apply to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, and Ukraine, according to one email.

In the email recently sent to moderators, Meta (FB) highlighted a change in its hate speech policy pertaining both to Russian soldiers and to Russians in the context of the invasion.

"We are issuing a spirit-of-the-policy allowance to allow T1 violent speech that would otherwise be removed under the Hate Speech policy when: (a) targeting Russian soldiers, EXCEPT prisoners of war, or (b) targeting Russians where it's clear that the context is the Russian invasion of Ukraine (e.g., content mentions the invasion, self-defense, etc.)," it said in the email.

"We are doing this because we have observed that in this specific context, 'Russian soldiers' is being used as a proxy for the Russian military. The Hate Speech policy continues to prohibit attacks on Russians," the email stated.

Last week, Russia said it was banning Facebook in the country in response to what it said were restrictions of access to Russian media on the platform. Moscow has cracked down on tech companies, including Twitter TWTR.N, which said it is restricted in the country, during its invasion of Ukraine, which it calls a "special operation."

Many major social media platforms have announced new content restrictions around the conflict, including blocking Russian state media RT and Sputnik in Europe, and have demonstrated carve-outs in some of their policies during the war.

Emails also showed that Meta would allow praise of the right-wing Azov battalion, which is normally prohibited, in a change first reported by The Intercept.

Meta spokesman Joe Osborne previously said the company was "for the time being, making a narrow exception for praise of the Azov Regiment strictly in the context of defending Ukraine, or in their role as part of the Ukraine National Guard."

Computers / Apple Announces A 27-inch 5K Studio Display (update Hubs Naija) by olukiesy(m): 8:14pm On Mar 08, 2022
Apple just announced a new external display at its "Peek Performance" event. It's designed to be the perfect companion to the company's high-end Mac lineup, including the new M1 Ultra chip-powered Mac Studio desktop. The Studio Display features a 27-inch 5K display wrapped in an aluminum shell. And just like the Pro Display XDR, this monitor comes with a nano texture option for those who work in a bright environment.

The Studio Display has three USB-C ports and a single Thunderbolt 4 port that supports up to 96W passthrough charging.

The Pro Display XDR was introduced in 2019 with a starting price of $5,000. As its price conveys, that monitor is intended for professional photo and video work, with Apple touting the Pro Display XDR’s color accuracy and brightness. Given its high price and niche audience, the Pro Display XDR did little to quell Mac users’ demands for a more reasonably priced, Apple-made external display like the Thunderbolt Display that was discontinued in 2016. Since then, Apple has sold LG displays like the UltraFine 4K and UltraFine 5K to complement its pricey XDR display.

n the months leading up to today's event, Apple was rumored to be developing new external displays. The immediate announcement became more likely this week when Bloomberg's Mark Gurman confirmed that at least one monitor was "ready to go". CONTINUE READING

Science/Technology / The Tech That Will Invade Our Lives In 2022 (Update Hubs Naija) by olukiesy(m): 4:42pm On Jan 06, 2022
Brian X. Chen - Here we go again: Virtual reality, now called “the metaverse,” will be a thing. So will the smart home.

Each year, I look ahead at what’s new in consumer technology to guide you through what you might expect to buy — and what will most likely be a fad.

Many of the same “trends” appear again and again because, to put it simply, technology takes a long time to mature before most of us actually want to buy it. That applies this year as well. Some trends for 2022 that tech companies are pushing are things you have heard of before.

A chief example is virtual reality, the technology that involves wearing goofy-looking headgear and swinging around controllers to play 3-D games. That is expected to be front and center again this year, remarketed by the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and other techies as “the metaverse.”

Another buzzy category will be the so-called smart home, the technology to control home appliances by shouting voice commands at a speaker or tapping a button on a smartphone. The truth is, the tech industry has tried to push this kind of technology into our homes for more than a decade. This year, these products may finally begin to feel practical to own.

Another recurring technology on this list is digital health gear that tracks our fitness and helps us diagnose possible ailments. And automakers, which have long talked about electric cars, are beginning to accelerate their plans to meet a nationwide goal to phase out production of gas-powered cars by 2030.

Here are four tech trends that will invade our lives this year.

1. Welcome to the metaverse.

For more than a decade, technologists have dreamed of an era when our virtual lives play as important a role as our physical realities. In theory, we would spend lots of time interacting with our friends and colleagues in virtual space, and as a result we would spend money there, too, on outfits and objects for our digital avatars.

“We’re in a world where people several times per day send out an image reflecting themselves,” said Matthew Ball, a venture capitalist who has written extensively about the metaverse. “The next phase takes that visual representation and dimensionalizes it. You go into an environment and express yourself through an avatar.”

That sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. But throughout Year 2 of the pandemic, a critical mass of factors came together to make the metaverse more realistic, Mr. Ball said.

For one, the technology got better. Last year, Facebook announced that it had renamed itself Meta after shipping 10 million units of its virtual-reality headset, the Quest 2, which was a milestone.

For another, many of us were willing to splurge on our digital selves. Hordes of investors bought NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, which are one-of-a-kind digital objects purchased with cryptocurrency. Eminem and other investors invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to join a virtual yacht club.

There’s more to come this year. Apple plans to unveil its version of a virtual reality headset, which will look like a pair of ski goggles and, for computing power, rely on a separate computing device that is worn elsewhere on the body. Apple declined to comment.

Google has also developed virtual reality products for years, and Microsoft has offered a virtual reality headset for businesses and government agencies.

The metaverse could still turn out to be a fad, depending on what products emerge and who buys them. Carolina Milanesi, a consumer technology analyst for the consulting firm Creative Strategies, said she worried that it could become a reflection of the privileged few who can afford to treat their digital selves.

“The boating market is dominated by white upper-class middle-aged men,” she said. “Will we just transfer all of that into the metaverse?”

2. The smart home.
Over the last few years, smart home products like internet-connected thermostats, door locks and robotic vacuum cleaners made major progress. The devices became affordable and worked reliably with digital assistants like Amazon’s Alexa, Google’s Assistant and Apple’s Siri.

Yet the smart home, for the most part, has remained chaotic. Many smart home products didn’t work well with other technology. Some door locks, for example, worked only with Apple phones and not Androids; some thermostats were controlled by talking to Google Assistant and not to Siri.

The lack of compatibility has created long-term issues. An Apple-compatible lock isn’t useful for the family member or future tenant who prefers Android. It would also be more convenient one day if our home devices could actually talk to one another, like a washing machine telling a dryer that a large load was ready to be dried.

This year, the tech industry’s biggest rivals — Apple, Samsung, Google and Amazon — are playing nice to make the smart home more practical. They plan to release and update home technology to work with Matter, a new standard that enables smart home devices to talk to one another regardless of the virtual assistant or phone brand. More than 100 smart home products are expected to adhere to the standard.

“We’re all speaking a common language built on already proven technologies,” said Samantha Osborne, a vice president of marketing for SmartThings, the home automation company owned by Samsung.

This means that later this year, when you shop for a product like an automated door lock, look for a label indicating that the device is compatible with Matter. Then, in the future, your smart alarm clock may be able to tell your smart lights to turn on when you wake up.

Phones / Classic Blackberry Phones Will Officially Stop Working On January 4 by olukiesy(m): 2:20pm On Jan 04, 2022
The company behind the once ubiquitous devices reminded customers that on Jan. 4 it will stop running legacy services for its BlackBerry 7.1 operating system and earlier BlackBerry 10 software, as well as its Playbook OS 2.1 and earlier versions. This means devices using this old software will no longer reliably function, including for data, text messaging and phone calls, including to 911, BlackBerry said. You soon won't be able to use that old BlackBerry phone sitting at the bottom of your drawer somewhere.

While most mobile users have moved on from BlackBerry -- the last version of its operating system launched in 2013 -- the move to discontinue support for its phones represents the end of what was once considered bleeding-edge technology.
The company originally announced the news in September 2020 as part of its efforts to focus on providing security software and services to enterprises and governments around the world under the name BlackBerry Limited.
BlackBerry (BB) has been mostly out of the phone business since 2016, but over the years it continued to license its brand to phone manufacturers, including TCL and more recently OnwardMobility, an Austin, Texas-based security startup, for a 5G Blackberry device running on Android software. (BlackBerry's Android devices are not affected by the end of service.)
BlackBerry's old school cell phones with physical keyboards from the late 1990s and early 2000s were once so popular people nicknamed them "CrackBerries." The keyboard appealed to professionals who wanted the flexibility of working outside the office with some of the tools they used on a desktop computer.

The devices became a status symbol and fixture for people on Wall Street, celebrities like Kim Kardashian, and even President Barack Obama, thanks in part to its great reputation for security. At its peak in 2012, BlackBerry had more than 80 million active users. Owning a BlackBerry was once considered a status symbol among politicians, business leaders and everyday users. Customers largely abandoned the device and its full external keyboard and small (by today's standard) screen once smartphones came on the scene.

Business / Wharton's Finance Professor: Bitcoin Is New Gold For Millennials by olukiesy(m): 7:24pm On Jan 03, 2022
Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel believes bitcoin has stood out as an inflation hedge. "Digital coins are the new gold for the millennials," he told CNBC last Friday.

Gold disappointed investors in 2021 as a traditional hedge against inflation, seeing its worst year since 2015.

Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel believes one asset has stood out as an inflation hedge for many younger folks in the past months: bitcoin.

"Let's face the fact, I think bitcoin as an inflation hedge in the minds of many of the younger investors has replaced gold," he told CNBC last Friday. "Digital coins are the new gold for the millennials

Siegel also reminded that older generations witnessed how gold had soared during the inflation of the 1970s. “This time, it is not in favor,” he added.

Gold, which traditionally emerged as an asset class providing a hedge against inflation, failed to meet investors’ expectations in 2021, recording its worst year since 2015 and dropping around 5% to close the year at $1,800. Despite massive price fluctuations over the course of 2021, BTC had surged around 70% by the end of 2021.

Several prominent global investors supported BTC over gold in 2021, with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban arguing that Bitcoin was “better than gold” in October 2021. Starwood Capital Group co-founder Barry Sternlicht also said that gold was actually “worthless” and that he is holding BTC because every government was printing massive amounts of money.

But despite BTC becoming an increasingly popular asset against gold, many financial and crypto experts believe that it is yet to prove inflation hedge status.

Health / Netherlands To Go To Lockdown This Christmas - UPDATE HUBS NAIJA by olukiesy(m): 4:10pm On Dec 21, 2021
The Netherlands will go into "lockdown" over the Christmas period to try to stop a surge of the Omicron coronavirus variant, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Saturday.

The rising COVID infection rate has forced the country to enact lockdown until Jan. 14.

The Omicron variant of the coronavirus has triggered a renewed surge in the COVID-19 infection rate around the world. With many countries posting infection numbers that are rivalling the worst point of the pandemic once again, countries like The Netherlands are reeling from the unprecedented infection numbers so much that the government has had to step in with lockdown measures to curb the rise.
The strict lockdown measures will prevent the Dutch from joining this year’s Christmas celebrations that people all over the world have been looking forward to as the lockdown is scheduled to last until January 14th at least.

People are now only allowed two guests at home, except for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, December 26 and the New Year period when four guests are permitted.

Even though lockdowns have triggered protests in the country recently, its government has considered it necessary if they are to curb the infections after they recorded a high of 14,742 daily cases on Saturday and requested the cooperation of the populace in order to enable the country to survive this new wave of infections.

Other European countries like Germany are also considering different methods of limiting positive cases like limiting travelers from the United Kingdom. This move will require travelers from the UK to require a negative PCR test and also have to isolate for 14 days in order to gain entry to the European country.

The Netherlands relaxed most social distancing measures in September, but by November infections were back up to record levels of more than 20,000 a day.

The restrictions have been unpopular, with riots breaking out in Rotterdam, The Hague and other cities in late November.

At last, the 136 pupils of the Salihu Yanko Islamiyya School in Tegina, Niger state have been released after spending almost three months in the hands of their abductees.

The pupils were said to be released in Brinin Gwari in Kaduna state around 8:pm today

The exact number of pupils that eventually survived out of the initial 136 kidnapped cannot however be ascertained for now.

A dependable Source from the Niger state government House stated that the State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello has directed that the pupils should be taken straight for a Medical checkup first to ascertain their health status before being officially received at the government House tomorrow.

Most of the children are between the ages of five and fifteen.

In the latest conversation with some of them by one of the parents a few days ago, the pupils were said to be crying and calling on all Nigerians to assist them to get out of the suffering.

Phones / Iphone 13 Might Launch By September 13 by olukiesy(m): 2:34pm On Aug 26, 2021
At this point, Apple will almost certainly launch the iPhone 13 next month, 17. But while we don't know when the phone will officially go on sale, a random eCommerce listing hints the the next-gen iPhone could be unveiled on September 17.

The listing comes from a screenshot of a Chinese e-commerce app, initially spotted by IT Home (via MacRumors.) The image suggests that all four iPhone 13 models will go on sale on Sept. 17, while the AirPods 3 will launch on Sept. 30. There’s not much else to back up that claim, but it does dovetail with other recent rumors that claim Apple’s annual iPhone launch event will be held the third week of September.

Apple is (in)famous for having gadget launches down to a science, but the pandemic and global chip shortage have thrown a wrench into the usual routine. While the company generally hosts its annual iPhone event in September, last year it pushed the launch to October. Apple also held two other events, announcing the Apple Watch Series 6 in September and M1 MacBooks in November. All the signs this year point to the iPhone once again arriving in September, but it does seem like we’re due for multiple events this fall as well. In particular, we might see the new M1X 14-inch and 16-inch MacBooks, along with a high-end Mac Mini, in November.

If we go by previous years, it seems likely that Apple could hold its iPhone event on Sept. 7, Sept. 14, or Sept. 21. If Sept. 17 is, in fact, the sale date, Sept. 7 may be a contender for the launch event itself. It falls in line with CNET’s “Labor Day Theory.” While it’s somewhat convoluted, the theory goes that if Labor Day falls on Sept. 1-3, the iPhone event occurs the following week and if it falls on Sept. 5 or later, Apple announces the iPhone the following Wednesday. And while it’s possible Sept. 21 is in the cards, Apple has yet to hold an iPhone event after Sept. 15 (not including last year’s October surprise).

Science/Technology / How To Make Money From Your Youtube Channel[update Hubs Naija] by olukiesy(m): 3:31am On Aug 23, 2021
If you are looking for a way to make online money on a long run, you should opt for YouTube. I have seen a lot of people who goes for some online programs to perform tasks to get rewarded but it’s hundred percent sure that the programs won’t last.

On YouTube, you have many opportunity to make money from your videos. All you need are strong subscriber base who are interested in your video.

Now in this tutorial, I will give you the steps on how you can easily open a youtube account/channel and make money from it.

1. FIND YOUR YOUTUBE FUNCTION:

You cannot just decide to open a YouTube Channel without knowing its purpose except you are not ready to make money from it. You have to know the purpose of your YouTube Channel and build a niche around it.

For example, you can decide to start uploading WWE videos and members will know you for that. But if you decide to add multiple niches, like WWE, Entertainment, Technology, Sports, Racing and more, you may lose subscribers because you are not focused.

2. HOW TO OPEN A YOUTUBE CHANNEL:

YouTube accounts have only one channel attached to it. Firstly, create a gmail account and then, go to YouTube Channel Creator Page and open a channel.

After you have successfully opened a YouTube channel: add your channel description, channel logo and cover image, name (please make it short to fit your YouTube purpose) and add keywords to it. Those keywords should be related to your video contents.

3. ADD CONTENTS TO YOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL:

After creating your YouTube Channel, what you should do next is to add videos to it. This will bring subscribers to the page. Since you have found what you do best on our first tutorial, you should be able to upload what will attract those audience to your channel.

Try to upload video contents that are highly super and quality. Find a good camera or find a better editing software or technique to light the scenes of your videos. Subscribers likes quality and unique videos. Do not copy other people’s content or scrape. Video your own and upload in order not go against YouTube Terms and conditions.

And also, upload videos consistently, do not upload today and forget about it. Upload regularly to bring more members. You should always try to make the videos descriptive and short. No body would like to waste time on long videos.

Your video title should be eye-catching, same goes to the description and keyword. This will help you automatically bring more members and views without much advertisement.

5. MONETIZE YOUR CHANNEL VIDEOS

A work without payment is as useless as the “P” on Psychology. Man gets to eat and take care of basic needs.

To monetize your video, go to your channel and go to Video Manager, click on Channel and enable “Monetization".

6. MEET THE MONETIZATION REQUIREMENTS

Career / How To Make Money From Your Youtube Channel[Update Hubs Naija] by olukiesy(m): 2:37am On Aug 23, 2021

To filter the serious people, YouTube unveiled a new policy that requires all video creators to get at least 4000 hours watch time and 1,000 subscribers before he or she can start monetizing their videos.

Once you meet the requirement, go to your video manager and enable the video you want to monetize.
