Chartered Accountants can practice taxation unhindered, says ICAN 0 March 4, 2013 | 12:23 am Finance By BABAJIDE KOMOLAFE The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has insisted that its members can practice taxation unhindered. In a statement issued weekend, ICAN President, Mr. Adedoyin Owolabi, said that the judgment of February 15, 2013 by the Court of Appeal did not restrained its members who are not members of Chartered Institute of Taxation (CITN) from practicing taxation. He said that the judgment has rather vindicated ICAN MEMBERS and made it clear that there is no order restraining members of the Institute from practicing tax in Nigeria. “As a matter of fact, the two key reliefs sought by CITN, which form the kernel of the controversy between the two bodies (reliefs 3 & 5), were actually set aside by the court, namely: A declaration that it is illegal for any member of the defendant (ICAN) who is not a member of the Claimant (CITN) to practice or hold himself out to practice as a tax administrator or practitioner for or in expectation of reward in Nigeria; “An order restraining members of the Defendant (ICAN) who are not members of the Claimant (CITN) from practicing, representing or holding themselves out as Tax” “For the avoidance of doubt, we hereby reiterate that while the Court of Appeal held that Taxation is a profession distinct from Accountancy and gave CITN powers to regulate and control the practice of taxation, CITN was denied the right to declare it illegal for ICAN members who are not members of CITN to practise as Tax administrators for a reward in Nigeria. “The Court of Appeal also refused to grant a perpetual injunction restraining ICAN members who are not CITN members from practicing, representing or holding themselves out as Tax Administrators or Practitioners in violation of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria Act No. 76 of 1992 Cap C10 LFN 2004. The import of the judgement is clear to all and sundry: ICAN members can practise taxation unhindered without being members of CITN.” “ICAN wishes to use this medium to appeal to its members, other stakeholders and the public at large not to be misled by the media hype. The court ruling, which nobody can alter, is available for all to read and draw their conclusions there from. As a law abiding body of respectable professionals, ICAN, which was established by the Act of Parliament No 15 of 1965, has operated within the limits of the rule of Law in the past forty eight years. Our motto is Accuracy and Integrity and we will not allow anything to distract or derail us,” the statement said. |

“United Nations' global accountancy curriculum titled Guideline on National Requirements for the Qualification of Professional Accountants published in 1999. ACCA was a participant in the consultative group, which devised this global Benchmark, and reference to ACCA's role is included throughout the publication.” I still maintain that acca operates on a royal charter granted it by the queen in 1974 being a part of a group that developed a curriculum for UN does not amount to a global recognition. I agree that ACCA has a global outlook and approach it still doesn't give automatic rights to practice world wide http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Chartered_Certified_Accountants |

Ignore the ACCA advice and go for ICAN, ACCA is british not global they have no global charter be proudly nigerian. |

DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY ANY MOU BETWEEN ICAN AND ACCA, COULD THE ACCA GLOBAL PRESIDENT HAVE COME ALL THE WAY FROM ENGLAND TO NIGERIA JUST TO DECEIVE NIGERIANS, SEE BELOW 'In apparent bid to further promote the accountancy profession in Nigeria, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, ACCA, of the United Kingdom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on mutual cooperation. The memorandum is a befitting sequel to the landmark agreement reached in February this year. The two bodies had agreed last February when the Global President of ACCA, Mrs. Gillian Ball visited Nigeria. This led to first ICAN and ACCA bilateral meeting, which took place at the ICAN secretariat on Wednesday, February 6, 2008. The ACCA team, led by Ms Ball and the ICAN team led by Prince Ade Babington-Ashaye, both agreed the terms of reference of the Bilateral Committee as well as resolved to collaborate on a number of areas to develop the Accountancy profession'. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=16391283647 A statement issued at the end of the MOU signing stated, “ In recognition of the value of promoting mutual co-operation for the advancement of the accountancy profession and the public interest, both ICAN and ACCA, thus agreed to enter into the MOU, which was made towards the end of May, 2008. i had an interesting experience with an insurance compy agency. i was invited for an interview, did it and passed, After 3 days training was very happy collecting the employment letter on reading it however i saw that the terms are nothing to write home about ; i was to be given 5000 as monthly transport allowance to roam the streets of lagos and my salary will be a function of the number of policies that i am able to sell. i thought about it for 2 days because i needed a job badly, i did not take the job eventually. however i got a job 3 weeks after this incidence in a bank. graduates please wait for your time, it will surely come |
