Politics / Controversy Dogs NUJ Award To Aregbesola by Oluwolex2000(m): 12:37pm On Mar 25, 2021
Controversy has trailed the conferment of the Award of Excellence on the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, by the South West of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The national body of the union also frowned at the appointment of the ex-governor of Osun State as its Grand Patron in Southwest.

Sources also told News Direct that the National NUJ had also suspended all activities of the Southwest Zonal executives.

When contacted, the national secretary of the union, Shuaibu Leman, told our correspondent that he is not aware of the development.

“I have been away for a while and I don’t know anything about the suspension of the activities of the Southwest Zonal executives. Call the president,” he simply said.

The national president, Chris Isiguso, also, exonerated himself from the suspension on Thursday.

Meanwhile, this newspaper obtained a letter by the National Assistant Secretary of the Union, Akorede Oyeyemi, announcing the suspension of the activities of the zonal executive.

The zonal executives on the other hand are bent on going on with the awards.

The ceremony is expected to be held Friday, March 26, 2021, at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

S/South Speakers Congratulate Elected PDP Zonal Officers...say PDP Remains Nigeria's Only Hope

The South South Speakers' Forum has congratulated all officers elected to pilot affairs of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) at the Zonal level.

This was part of the resolutions reached by Forum in a meeting held shortly after the PDP' South South Zonal Congress held on Tuesday, 9th March, 2021 at Dr Obi Wali International Conference Centre, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In a Press Release signed by the Forum's Chairman - the Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, and made available to news reporters - the Speakers expressed optimism that "the elected Officers, having been tested and proven worthy - in acting capacities - would justify the confidence reposed in them by working to strengthen the Party".

While describing the PDP as the only true national Party in view of its presence and spread across the six geopolitical zones of the country, the Forum stressed that the Party remains the most formidable, reliable and enviable political platform in Nigeria.

The Forum also declared their avowed commitment towards supporting the BRACED Commission (representing the States of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta States) to help strengthen integration and possible collaboration for socio-economic and infrastructural development of the region.

While reviewing the worsening economic, infrastructural and security situation in the country, the Forum noted that Nigeria has never had it so bad, stating further that PDP, with laudable, sustainable and feasible blueprint, is Nigeria's only hope of recovery and encouraged Nigerians within the region to continue to support PDP to return the country to its glorious days.

Politics / TUKUR BURATAI YEARS: His Unrivaled Legacy As Nigerian Army Chief Of Staff by Oluwolex2000(m): 12:24pm On Feb 26, 2021
TUKUR BURATAI YEARS:

*His Unrivaled Legacy As Nigerian Army Chief of Staff*

When President Muhammadu Buhari appointed the then Major General Tukur Yusuff Buratai as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), those who were familiar with him said his appointment could not have come at a better time. It was a time the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents had instilled horror in the mind of Nigerians while the military was losing its officers and men in large numbers. The Nigerian military regarded as one of the best in the world had become the butt of jokes even among Nigerians.

Prior to his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff in July 13, 2015, a large section of Nigeria was under the grip of Boko Haram. The insurgents were controlling a lot of local governments in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States. They were so bold in their evil undertaking that, even the local government of the former Chief of Defence Staff, the late Air Marshall Alex Badeh, was under the command of Boko Haram and his hometown used as their command base.

Suicide bombings by Boko Haram were widespread in the northern part of the country particularly Kaduna and Abuja. The media was not spared either. The office of a national newspaper, This Day, was bombed by the insurgents.

Meanwhile, within three months of his appointment, General Buratai demonstrated his leadership capability by showing that he indeed understood the terrain of the North East, the epicenter of the insurgency, having been born in Buratai town in Biu local government area in Borno state, which also suffered brutal attack from Boko Haram. He took the war to Boko Haram and cleared the mess. As at September 2015, his soldiers had recaptured and pushed back the insurgents from Gamboru Ngala, the area’s commercial centre, and hoisted the Nigerian flag in the town. At that time, bombings by Boko Haram were common in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital city. Buratai was able to put a stop to that.

General Buratai did not just beat back any further advance on Maiduguri by the rampaging Boko Haram, the insurgents were chased to their Sambisa Forest hideout where troops of the Operation Lafia Dole proudly displayed vital insignias of the sect including a Holy Quran and flags of the sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, on national television to the admiration of Nigerians. That indeed was a big setback for the insurgents’ campaign of destruction, from which they never recovered as a whole.

In terms of projects, capacity building, training and welfare, throughout Buratai’s tenure as COAS, there was never a dull moment.

It is on record that Buratai’s leadership style did inspire the fighting soldiers, a record-breaking template his successors would also find suitable to utilize. When he became the Nigerian army chief, he made it a duty to identify with his officers and men as they launched a full-scale war against the Boko Haram fighters. As an officer well-grounded in military tactics, records show that he led his men to victories defeating the insurgents who not only bowed but surrendered their weapons in disgraceful defeat. Besides, General Buratai, while he headed the Army, personally identified with his soldiers in their trying times. He is said to be the first military chief to be so concerned about his men in the war front.

When he assumed office in July of 2015, General Buratai wasted no time in setting the machinery in motion to decimate the Boko Haram insurgency. However, the new Army chief met troops whose morale in the battlefield was dampened by poor or lack of arms and ammunitions to battle insurgency; a condition further worsened by poor welfare packages of troops in the battlefront; arrears of unpaid salaries and allowances of army personnel and zero initiative on incentives to fighting troops. Subsequently, he kick started a tour

of Army formations, got briefs and set to work almost immediately to right the wrongs by setting in motion processes to stabilize the psyche of the battle-weary troops.

He initiated a range of activities in support of developing the force, via intensive training, mentoring, partnering, monitoring and empowering. His enabling efforts in that regards include setting up the Nigerian Army Institute of Technology and Environmental Studies in Biu, Borno State; Command Secondary School (Boys & Girls) in Kebbi State; Nigerian Army Aviation hangar at Jaji Airstrip, Kaduna; Mine Resistance Amour Protected (MRAP); Activation of Divisions Training Schools; establishing Tinapa Post Housing Development Limited Estate, Calabar; Army Warrant Officers Board; the Nigerian Army Special Forces School; First Nigerian Army indigenous infantry patrol vehicle; Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command and the Nigerian Army Vehicle Manufacturing Company.

Other capacity building projects Buratai initiated are; the Supply and Transport Driving School; Nigerian Army Women’s Corps; Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association Hospital; Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Command; 20 Regimentation Battalion; 133 Special Forces Battalion; 123 Special Forces Battalion; Counter Terrorist and Counter Insurgency Museum; 109 Special Forces Battalion; 4 Special Forces Battalion, Counter Explosive Devices; 707 Special Forces Brigade; Motorcycle Battalion; Nigerian Army Agricultural Business Enterprise Limited; Army War College, Nigeria; Nigerian Army Bureau De Change; Nigerian Army Investments Account; Operation Lafia Dole Sectors 1,2 and 3; Homes Fit for Heroes; Otukpo Post Housing Development Limited Estate; Buffalo Engineering and Technical Services Limited, evolution of new operational concepts, establishment of 6 and 8 Divisions, Nigerian Languages Training Initiative, and many more.

Inspiring and effectively leading subordinates, especially through a military mission with life or death implications, is no small feat. It requires leadership, one that extends well beyond the battlefield. This trait, evidently, Retired General Tukur Buratai possesses with an undeterred drive to accomplish noteworthy goals in any field of endeavour.

It bears repeating that General Buratai did not joke with the welfare of his officers while he headed the Army. He always made sure they were in right frame of mind in their duty. He is a man that would go to any length to see and meet their needs at every point in time. Under his leadership, priority was given to the equipment used by the military to combat the insurgents, among other steps taking by him. The allowances and bonuses of the military were paid as at when due.

It was vintage Buratai who continually ensured that his troops continued to receive utmost attention in terms of welfare. It was also to his credit that the troops in the North East were provided with constant water supply to meet their daily needs and to stabilize them emotionally and psychologically. As part of efforts to encourage his men, General Buratai on Tuesday July 25, 2017 approved the promotion of 6,199 soldiers involved in the fight against Boko Haram under his watch.

In the basic responsibilities of a leader which include accomplishment of the mission and the welfare of the soldiers, Buratai was not found wanting. He established Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches, built and commissioned block of flats at Jaji, Khobe Cantonment, Jos in Plateau State and the Danjuma Chalets at 2 Division Headquarters. The former Army chief also renovated a lot of projects he met on ground and initiated water projects including the Supply and Transport Foods and new Command Guest Houses.

Buratai has always displayed the zeal to excel and set records in whatever he does. His vast contributions to national, regional and international peace have not gone unnoticed here at home and abroad, which, obviously, led to his being appointed a non-career ambassador after a successful military career.

Politics / Why I'm Building An International Worship Center - Gov. Emmanuel by Oluwolex2000(m): 7:42pm On Feb 24, 2021
Why I'm building an international worship center - Gov. Emmanuel

...Says project will be completed, commissioned in 2022

The Akwa Ibom State International Worship Centre is of great significance to a state like Akwa Ibom, named after God and consisting of a 99% Christian population, hence the determination of the state government to ensure its speedy completion and commissioning, Governor Udom Emmanuel has declared.

Speaking during a project assessment visit to the site, the Governor noted that the building will be an altar that will perpetually draw God’s pleasure and blessings to people of the state.

“If we say this is the only state named after God, then something must be there to show. I am sure God is happy and through this a lot of blessings will come from God to the entire people, even generations yet unborn in the state”, the Governor said.

He thanked the people of the state and corporate organizations who have joined hands with the state government to see to the success of the project, noting with delight that the gesture was based on the level of understanding of the value of the project to the state and wished others will come to such understanding soonest.

According to Governor Emmanuel, the Akwa Ibom State International Worship Centre will be inaugurated by the end of 2022, with assurances of being the best its kind upon completion. He also thanked the supervising Ministry for ensuring the consistency of the work with the intensions of the state government.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work so far put into the project and described the building as an unprecedented sacred place that will serve as an altar for Akwa Ibom people and generations unborn.

“I want to appreciate Julius Berger, what you are seeing here can challenge any engineering of any standard anywhere in the world. When you seat back you will have an understanding of the concept we have for the whole building I will give them kudos for that. Then come back to see what is buried underground, it is over 680 piles. People see a building, I don’t see a building, I see that I am raising an altar for my people and for generations yet unborn”.

The governor was conducted round the facility by the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr. Ephraim Inyang -eyen, Commissioner of the supervising Ministry of Lands, Mr. Umo Eno among other members in the state executive council and the Regional Manager of Julius Berger PLC, Mr. Juergen Fischer.

Mr. Juergen Fischer described the engineering design as complicated and very challenging, but expressed optimism that the project which will be ready by December, will turn out to be a pride of the people of the state, affirming that the project will be commissioned at the end of 2022.

“At the moment we are on the concrete works, which will soon be finished and the roof is under production in Europe and it will be shipped very soon then we will continue with the roof.

"The building is very complicated and the engineering is very challenging. It will look like a whale fish from the ark and I will be very proud if my people can realize the building. It will be okay for Akwa Ibom and everybody will be proud”, he said.

Politics / Marginalisation: Oro Think Tank's Allegation Against Gov Emmanuel Unjustified by Oluwolex2000(m): 9:07am On Feb 21, 2021
Marginalisation: Oro Think Tank's allegation against Gov Emmanuel unjustified

The allegation of marginalisation against Governor Udom Emmanuel by the Oro Think Tank is unfair and has no basis in objectivity, the Akwa Ibom State branch of the Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, has declared.

In a release signed by its Chairman, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, the CLO said the statement signed by a former Commissioner for Information, Prince Chris Abasi Eyo, on behalf of the socio-cultural organisation, where they took up issues with the recent board appointments and accused Mr. Udom Emmanuel, Governor of Akwa Ibom State of marginalising Oron Federal Constituency in the composition of the boards is not justified.

"We share and completely agree with the fact that one of the cardinal responsibilities of a socio-political group is to agitate and advocate for the interest of entity they speak for. However, while we are not holding brief for the government, we wish to disagree with the Oro Think Tank on the above issue", CLO stated.

The CLO noted with delight that Governor Udom Emmanuel, since his election in 2015 and re-election in 2019, has been fair in the distribution of appointments across the three senatorial districts and across the main ethnic groups that make up the State.

"As an international civil society organisation, which is a watchdog of the society, we would have long taken the governor to task if we had discovered any tinge of marginalisation but, the governor has been fair and balanced in the manner he has distributed political offices in the State".

"For instance, apart from the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, an accomplished Oro Nation professional whose office is the engine room of government, Oron federal constituency also has the Commissioners for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Orman Esin and his Transport counterpart, Hon. Uno Etim Uno as key members of the Udom Emmanuel’s cabinet", Otuekong Isong noted.

He argued that in fairness to the Governor, among the board members from Oron federal constituency are: Barrister Ekpenyong Ntekim, Chairman of the Board of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic; Professor Peter Esuh, Chairman of the Land Use and Allocation Committee; Mr. George Henshaw who was Chairman, Technical School Board between 2016-2020, among several other apartments, advocating that a board appointment is the sole prerogative of the Governor and is a continuous exercise. We are sure the Governor is not done yet with such appointments.

"While we encourage the Oro Think Tank to fight for its interest, we advise them not to push this issue of marginalisation as we are convinced the Governor has been fair and transparent in his appointments across the tripod of ethnic interests that make up our dear state", the release stated.

CLO Commends Gov Emmanuel Over Spread Of Appointments In Akwa Ibom

The Press Release by the Oro Think Tank on Marginalisation: Our Position

We have read in a section of the media, the above referenced issue derived from a press release by a socio- political group Oro Think Tank.

In a statement signed by a former Commissioner for Information, Prince Chris Abasi Eyo, the group took up issues with the recent board appointments and accused Mr. Udom Emmanuel, Governor of Akwa Ibom State for marginalising Oron Federal Constituency in the composition of the boards.

We share and completely agree with the fact that one of the cardinal responsibilities of a socio-political group is to agitate and advocate for the interest of entity they speak for. However, while we are not holding brief for the government, we wish to disagree with the Oro Think Tank on the above issue.

We observe that Governor Udom Emmanuel, since his election in 2015 and re-election in 2019, has been fair in the distribution of appointments across the three senatorial districts and across the main ethnic groups that make up the State.

As an international civil society organisation, which is a watchdog of the society, we would have long taken the governor to task if we had discovered any tinge of marginalisation but, the governor has been fair and balanced in the manner he has distributed political offices in the State.

For instance, apart from the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, an accomplished Oro Nation professional whose office is the engine room of government, Oron federal constituency also has the Commissioners for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Orman Esin and his Transport counterpart, Hon. Politics / Gov Emmanuel's Peaceful Disposition In Leadership Should Be Emulated - Tambuwal by Oluwolex2000(m): 9:05pm On Feb 15, 2021
Gov Emmanuel's peaceful disposition in leadership should be emulated - Tambuwal, Mutwalle

...Says A'Ibom Gov, a jewel worth celebrating

The Governor of Sokoto State and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors' Forum, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has urged Nigerian leaders to emulate the peaceful disposition of Governor Udom Emmanuel, saying it is an asset to both the party and Nigeria as a nation.

He stated this while on a condolence visit over the demise of former Military Governor of the State, Air Comdr. Idongesit Nkanga (rtd.), former Nigeria’s Chief of Air State, Air Marshall Nsikak Eduok and the state Chairman of the PDP, Obong Udo Ekpenyong last Sunday.

He was in the company of his Zamfara State counterpart, Governor Bello Mohammed Mutwalle.

According to him, Governor Udom Emmanuel has been able to re-establish peace and harmonious co-existence in Akwa Ibom State and the State has been rid of cult activities, allowing people to go about their lawful businesses freely.

"I commend Governor Udom for that, of course with the infrastructural development in the state it is really clear the imprints are all over the place people are happy and I believe that he has done a lot of giant strides in turning around Akwa Ibom we commend him and we are proud of him. He is a voice in this country and we expected nothing less from him. He is a man for the future”.

Also speaking, the Zamfara State governor, Dr. Bello Mohammed Mutwalle, said because of Governor Emmanuel's leadership style, peace and development in the state have continued uninterrupted, something he noted others should learn from.

Governor Mutwall also condoled with the people and government and people of the state, with whom he said, his people have become one family having joined the PDP for the first time.

He said he was visiting Akwa Ibom state for the first time, admired the peaceful ambience of the state and called for prayers for the peace of all parts of the country, urging all Nigerians to unite against the challenges in some parts of the country occasioned by banditry and other forms of criminality.

“Let us put out hands together. Let us forget all our differences. Let us be preaching peace wherever we find ourselves. We have to remain together. God did not make mistake in bringing all of us in one basket as Nigeria. Let’s try to protect our country”, the Zamfara Governor said.

Responding, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, thanked the duo for identifying with him and the people of the state in the season of grief, describing their visit and kind words as an expression of love which, he added, cannot be taken for granted.

He expressed the sympathy of his government to the Government and people of Sokoto state over the recent inferno in the Shehu Shagari Modern Market, popularly called New Market, in the State, which led to wanton loss of lives and properties.

He however lauded Tambuwal’s peaceful disposition and wide range of experience in leadership. These, he said, were responsible for the coordination and peace in the PDP Governors Forum under his leadership.

He urged his Sokoto and Zamfara counterparts to pray for peace in the various states of the federation facing various degrees of violent crimes, particularly for Zamfara which, he said, was richly endowed with naturally resources that could not be converted to benefit the common man due to distractions and other circumstances militating against good governance.

“Let me on behalf of government and the good people of Akwa Ibom State share our sympathy on the recent happenings in the two States. The inferno at the market in Sokoto was something that made us devastated at a time we are looking for infrastructure. I also extend my sympathy to my brother Governor in Zamfara.

"I really sympathize with you over the level of criminality and banditary you have had to battle with everyday because if you compare the challenges with the resources that all of us have, it’s a far cry, but I thank God for the grace”, Governor Emmanuel stated.

“Zamfara, has a whole lot of mineral resources. We hope as PDP will come into the center in 2023 we should be able to harness all the resources for the benefit of the common man and for the people to have peace and prosperity in their daily lives” he added.

Politics / We'll Ensure Investments In A'ibom Become Productive, Says Gov Emmanuel by Oluwolex2000(m): 10:41am On Feb 12, 2021
We'll ensure investments in A'Ibom become productive, says Gov Emmanuel

* Commissions Tropicana Mall

* Pledges to revamp Ibom Hilton Hotel, complete 4-Star hotel, Ikot Ekpene

... A’Ibom is now an investors destination- MD, Tropicana Mall

Governor Udom Emmanuel has revealed that his administration is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that investments that belong to Akwa Ibom people are not left to waste, pu into productive use.

Accordingly, he has promised to complete the 14-storey Ibom Hilton Hotel to complement the 4-star hotel in Ikot Ekpene, and all ongoing projects before leaving office in 2023.

The governor made this known while inaugurating the Tropicana Shopping Mall at the Ibom Tropicana Entertainment Complex, Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo, yesterday.

He assured that his administration remains committed to completing all projects initiated in the state for the benefit of Akwa Ibom people.

“I want to believe if not for the setback of COVID in 2020, by now our 4-star hotel in Ikot Ekpene would have been up and running. If you check, it is about 99% completed. The only thing remaining is for the management team to move in. We are reworking the agreement on that hotel and we will put everything in place to address all the challenges."

The governor who disclosed that his government was currently in talks with investors on completing the proposed Ibom Tropicana hotel, said “our vision, mission and dream is to make sure that before we leave office in 2023 we would have turned that uncompleted building into a hotel to complement what we are doing in Ikot Ekpene because we are making Akwa Ibom State a tourist destination”, he assured.

Continuing, he said, “We are hoping within a short moment Marriot should move in and that place commissioned. I know that place will employ over a thousand of Akwa Ibom people not to talk of indirect labour”, he added.

The Governor said once the international market in Eket is commissioned, it will also complement the state government’s investments in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Hear him, “You can see that we are on a throttle, ready to achieve on our completion agenda so that we can create jobs stimulate the economy of Akwa Ibom State and we don’t want to remove our foot from that throttle… We are not here to manage change, we are here to create change”, he stated.

He thanked the host community for their cooperation with the investors and thanked the investors for giving a lot of space for indigenous retail trade. This, he said, will develop local businessmen and support his administration’s drive to create change.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director of the Tropicana Mall, Engr. Olumide Akinsanya, who expressed happiness for the opportunity to invest in Akwa Ibom State, lauded Governor Emmanuel’s business mindedness in driving the state’s economy, especially in the provision of basic infrastructures and necessary government cooperation for the private sector to thrive, a policy he said, has helped the state through the harsh economic conditions occasioned by the 2020 COVID interruption.

According to him “We are happy to be here. We came here precisely August 22, 2015 to remodel the mall and the governor did the ground breaking on that day. We thought in one year we would be done but for no fault of Akwa Ibom State or ours, the economy went down, naira went from two hundred to about five hundred to a dollar and it became a huge challenge, but we saw the potentials of Akwa Ibom State and the private sector driven orientation of the governor which encouraged us greatly and I really really must thank him because he has really made this happen. He was determined and every of the roles the government was supposed to play were done in record time. There was light brought here in record time, which was never done”.

The tourism guru scored the state high in ease of doing business and described the state as an investment destination. He assured Akwa Ibom people that the mall which, he said, had capacity for 600 employees, with over 300 people employed, will provide a world class shopping experience and a boost in local earnings and ideas of business presentations by creating an interface between national and local business people.

“We are present in other states; we are present in Imo State, in Delta and a number of other states but this is the fastest state that documentations have been done. Our C of O was ready in less than one month. We had states that we spent two years pursuing C of O. We did our study and found that beyond the whole expectation, Akwa Ibom is actually and investment destination. The ease of doing business here is unequalled and I stand to be challenged. We are investing in virtually every state of the federation, but the ease of doing business in Akwa Ibom State is unequalled”, Akinsanya said.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Uyo LGA, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, thanked the governor for bringing opportunities-laden developments and stimulating the growth of the private sector economy to Uyo metropolis. He pledged the unalloyed support of the people of Uyo to the Udom Emmanuel led government and all the investors that would come into Uyo for business.

Politics / Nigeria’s Federalism 'lori Iro' By Femi Abimboye by Oluwolex2000(m): 7:29pm On Feb 11, 2021
“I am pleased to see that we are now all agreed that the federal system is, under present conditions, the only sure basis on which Nigeria can remain united.”

– Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, 1957.

The above statement is credited to the late Prime minister at a speech he delivered in the then House of Representatives.

He likes countless others at the time advocated for a federal system of government shortly before independence.

Believing that federalism would cater for our many differences, they pushed to actualize this dream. Their convictions while right, sadly isn’t today's reality.

Pardon my use of the Yoruba phrase (simply translates to ‘on lies’) in the title, but I just had to borrow from the trend of the hour to pen this piece.

In itself, Federalism allows for the integration of diverse nations, ethnic groups, or combatant parties, all of whom may have cause to fear control by an overly powerful centre government.

Hence, it allows for an individual constituent unit to retain and maintain his identity without fear of compromise from the other (arguably the biggest fear of any Nigerian ethic or sub-ethnic group).

In his book, Renascent Africa, Azikiwe cleverly mirrored the cultural differences among ethnic groups in Africa, most likely feeling that such differences had been made more prominent by the European occupation of Africa.

In another of his book, The Political Blueprint of Nigeria, Azikiwe also implied that what needed accommodation in any constitution for Nigeria was not cultural diversity but the geographical configuration of Nigeria, which by itself takes care of the cultural diversity.

While Federalism might slightly vary from place to place, as in the case of the Americans who while under creation advocated for a stronger centre government to the Europeans who preferred a weaker centre, the duty of Nigerians is to decide which to adopt.

One fact which is synonymous to all variations of federalism is that they all agree that each constituent unit will retain its local identity and maintain a reasonable amount of self-governance.

Sadly, the inability of the Nigerian political class to fully domesticate a version or variation of federalism has led to the creation of an absurdity of mode of government wherein the country lies more unitary in style and seems to have no semblance to federalism except for in name and on paper.

The very crux of people we refer to in our national anthem daily as “our heroes past” will look upon this country with disdain when they feel or see how much we’ve made a mockery of their gallant effort in birthing Nigeria. If only the dead could feel and see though!

To borrow from the words of Olayiwola Abegunrin, in his publication of 1975, where he stated that the lot of Nigerian leaders both past and present have fallen “within two categories:

(1) those who matched great courage with great ignorance and

(2) those, who though enlightened, lacked courage in the required measure” with only a few escaping these classifications.

For so long we have deliberated on how we got into this crisis as a nation but either by omission or design by some political elite, no actionable solution has been proffered.

We organize national conferences intermittently without making use of the recommendations provided.

That shouldn’t deter well-meaning Nigerians from providing such when available, we only have one country!

A solution on the fear of domination of minority groups by the majority ethnic groups has to be proffered. A solution on the allocation of revenue is also required.

A solution on who is rightly the chief security offer of a state is also needed.

A solution on who owns what resources and who controls such resources is equally important. All these solutions can be found in the enactment of a truly domesticated

Federal style of government in the country. God bless Nigeria!!

Politics / DIPLOMATIC SOLDERING: Garlands Of Merit For Retired Service Chiefs by Oluwolex2000(m): 8:24am On Feb 06, 2021
With the nomination of the immediate past service chiefs as non career Ambassardors by president Mohammadu Buhari, critics of retired General Tuku Buratai and his colleagues now have the sails removed from their ships.

The appointments have clearly put paid to insinuations of impending trial by International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity,; allegations and speculations which have trended on the media space for a long time.

The fact is that none of the immediate past service chiefs has had any proven charge of human Rights abuse to answer before any court within and outside Nigeria, as none of them has been invited or appeared before any court to answer to charges of criminal breach of fundamental human rights of Nigerians.

President Buhari deserves applause for providing another platform for the retired service chiefs to lend their rich military experience for the advancement of Nigeria's image in the county of Nations.

Retired General Tukur Buratai and his colleagues therefore need to use their new appointments to galvanize global support for Nigeria's peace keeping initiatives and efforts in African countries where terrorism and internecine wars have negatively impacted on peoples wellbeing and impaired socio economic and political stability of such Nations.

It is hoped that the new envoys will deliver on Mr President's mandate by employing the "Patriotism Mantra" that their years of military trainings and engagements had ingrained in them in service to their country

The retirement of Gen Buratai and his colleagues has drawn varying reactions across board, bothering on perceive human rights abuse and extra judicial killings.

Amnesty International has been particularly vocal in this aspect, but the military authorities have repeatedly dismissed such allegations as largely unproven, insufficiently investigated and unsubstantiated.

The shites conflict and its aftermath was unfortunate but it was a of product of a persistent flagrant breach of. National security which the Sect has created in Kaduna state.

The blockage of a major road could not be explained as a religious right but more of disturbance to public peace and breach of national security.

How can such be contemplated when a personality like a whole head of a country's army is involved? Loss of life in the milieu was unfortunate but not unconnected with what a mob action usually induce.

Similar street protests like ENDSARS and IPOB that claimed lives and properties went beyond lawful boundaries and contrary to Democratic principles of civil liberties because they were hijacked by hoodlums and criminals with intent for breakdown of law and order and subversion of constituted authority.

No security agency, particularly the Army would allow a situation that will plunge the country into anarchy.

The Armed forces exist in any country to ensure preservation of constitutional government and the execution of its mandate, chief of which is security and protection of the nations territorial integrity.

It is a surprise that Amnesty International still keeps mute rather than react to the bombing of Iran army general and defence minister Suleiman .............. by American Pentagon on the orders of president Donald Trump but find it convenient to criticise Gen Buratai on human right abuse that are largely unverified.

Those who have had the fortune or misfortune of wars may not easily convince those who only heard of war echoes from afar.

This is surprisingly the picture of wars everywhere in the world.

To a soldier who is compelled to put his life on the line for a cause,(just or Unjust), what is often ignored is that personal and family interests are subsumed by national interest.

For a soldier who returns from the battle field without losing a finger, the joy of survival also overshadows the pains, rigors and risks of combat.

Outside the theater of operations, the soldiers career is determined by factors that are in mist cases complex, dangerous and full of attrition.
This is why every soldier prays and eagerly looks forward to a fulfilled retirement.

So it was for Tukur Buratai, the infantry soldier and officer who held several command positions and made it to the top of his career as chief of staff Nigerian army.

Lt Fen Tukur Buratai held forte as Army chief of staff from 2015-2021 and bowed out of service with his colleague -service chiefs after a stint full of challenges and expectations from Nigerians. Bokko Haram insurgency was the greatest challenge Gen

Buratai and his colleagues faced while in office. It was a frontal assault on Nigeria's territorial integrity.

The terror war did take so much in human and material resources apart from exerting serious pressure on the efforts of the service chiefs to rid the country of outlaws.

Terrorism appeared malignant because the Nigerian armed forces were not originally trained in terror counteroffensives.
For an army whose orientation was in conventional warfare,Gen Buratai and his colleagues needed lots of adjustments and reorientation in counter terrorism for its officers and men.

The gap created hiccups for the army in its determined effort to quel the activities of these blood thirsty elements.

That was the harrowing situation before the appointment of Gen Buratai and other service Chiefs.

Many will agree that a large swath of Nigeria before 2015 had fallen into the hands of terrorists.

Territories bothering the North East, and North west of the country had ISWAP or ISIS flags hoisted and were declared independent of Nigeria before president Mohammadu Buhari appointed the immediate past service chiefs.

The Nigerian Army under the watch of Gen Buratai between 2015-2021,reversed that ugly trend that today,Bokko Haram can no longer lay claim to any part of the country as its own

The price may have been high but the Nigerian army has not allowed an inch of the country slipped into any foreign hand.
Pockets of terror may still exist, such are not in horrifying dimension as it was before..

Gen Tukur Buratai served his country to the best of his ability.

No man can do it all,and from every indication, the traditional institution as a major stake holder in Nigeria will forever appreciate the services of the former army chief to hold the country together despite all odds.

The facts remain that the infantry soldier and general had given his best and the nation he supervised her security has survived .

Let's give the successors of retired General Buratai and his colleagues the opportunity to build on their legacies

Politics / Gov. Emmanuel Immortalizes Ex Gov. Nkanga by Oluwolex2000(m): 8:10am On Feb 06, 2021
...As AKSG holds valedictory session for ex MILAD

In honour of Akwa Ibom's first indigenous Military Governor, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, and in appreciation for his positive contribution to the growth of the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, Akwa Ibom State, the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large, the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council has resolved to name the new Ring Road 3 dual carriage way after the former Commander of the Presidential Air Fleet and Chairman of PANDEF.

Speaking at a special valedictory session held in honour of the departed former Governor at the Exco Chambers Government House, Uyo Friday, Governor Emmanuel described the late Military Governor as a close friend, confidante and brother, describing the late Nkanga as someone who remained a reference point for patriotism and statesmanship, submitting that his departure has left a vacuum difficult to be filled.

Governor Emmanuel described Nkanga as a reference point for patriotism, statesmanship and forthrightness. In his words, "Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, Rtd, was a gentleman, an officer, a nationalist, a good Christian, my political Director-General, my personal friend, leader of Ibibio nation goodnight”.

Bemoaning his sudden passage, the Governor said Nkanga was a coordinating force in Akwa Ibom State and the entire South-South region.

“Words will fail me to describe how we grieved when we lost this Idongesit of our time, it took time for the void and disbelief to be filled with the acknowledgement that our icon now belongs to the ages and not with us any more.

"That was when we realized how much he meant to us, how much we identified with him, how much he had become part of the Akwa Ibom dream, we feel a collective sense of deprivation because he still had a lot to contribute”, he stated.

The ceremony which was solemn, sober and mournful, featured tributes from the Deputy Governor, Mr. Moses Ekpo, Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt.(Hon) Aniekan Bassey, Senator Helen Esuene as well as former State Chief Judge, Rtd.Justice Idongesit Ntem-Isua and Chief Obot Etukafia who both had served as commissioners when the late Nkanga was Military Governor.

The occasion climaxed with the adorning of the casket of the late Military Governor with the national and state flags and observation of a minute of silence in honour of the departed hero and patriot.

Politics / Infrastructural Development: Gov Emmanuel Vows To Complete All Projects by Oluwolex2000(m): 3:39pm On Jan 28, 2021
..Ikot Oku Ikono flyover to be completed in May

In his avowed determination to ensure the rapid infrastructural development of the state in line with his completion Agenda aimed at boasting his administration's industralization policy, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has vowed to complete all major infrastructural projects in the state before leaving office, even as he promised to complete for public use, the Ikot Oku Ikono flyover by May 2021, a move he believes, will grant a more stress free access to the state capital, from neighbouring local government areas.

The Governor who gave the assurance while inspecting the pace of work at the project site on Wednesday, assured of timely completion of the project by the contractor.

This is part of the numerous developmental projects that are billed for completion in 2021, few weeks after the Governor announced the injection of a N50 billion stimulus into the state's economy to ensure that works at project sites across the state are on towards completing same for public use.

Governor Emmanuel while inspecting the progress of work expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work on the ongoing Ikot Oku Ikono flyover project, as the contractor affirms her commitment to complete the project in May.

He said the level of work at the site has beaten the insinuations by critics suggesting abandonment, despite constraints posed by the COVID lockdown on project execution in 2020.

In his words, "What I'm seeing is completely different from the complains I'm hearing. Look at the length of the road, the size, the quality, I don't know how people expect this to be completed overnight, looking at what happened last year in terms of COVID, so many construction companies had to closedown for a long period of time. Right now, seeing the extent of work done, if Julius Berger commits to finishing in May, I'm so sure they will finish in April because they always give themselves a buffer".

Governor Emmanuel vouched for the quality of the job and said that the bridge, when completed with all its adjourning structures, will be the longest in the state, calling on the people of the state to appreciate the concept, quality and sincerity of purpose brought to bare in the project.

Also commending the progress and quality of work on the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road project, Governor Emmanuel confidence in the capability of contracting firm to deliver the projects in record time and quality. "I think I'm happy with the projects. Julius Berger will never disappoint anytime anyday", he added.

He however decried paucity of funds and lack of support from national agencies in the infrastructural development of the state. "We've not seen anything from the organs that should be expected to come to our aid so we have to squeeze water out of the rock to make sure we give ourselves infrastructural development", the Governor stated.

Speaking on behalf of the contracting firm, the Regional Manager of Julius Berger PLC, Mr. Juergen Fischer, affirmed that the company and the state government were in good working relationship in terms of contract agreements and assured that the flyover bridge will be completed in May 2021, while all adjourning structures, including roundabouts, access roads and service lanes will be completed in August.

Politics / Gov Emmanuel Signs N456.2b Budget For 2021 Into Law by Oluwolex2000(m): 5:36pm On Dec 10, 2020
GOV EMMANUEL SIGNS N456.2B BUDGET FOR 2021 INTO LAW
.... PLEDGES TO COMPLETE ALL PROJECTS

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has assented to a N456.2 billion budget of Economic reconstruction for 2021 fiscal year, while reassuring that all projects initiated by his administration will be completed.

This follows a N20.5 billion augmentation to the N435.6 billion proposal presented by the governor to the State House of Assembly on 20th of October 2020 before passage on the 8th of December. This was derived from an addition of N6.1 billion to the proposed N158.4 billion in the recurrent and 14.4 billion to the proposed 226.9 billion in the capital estimates presented by the governor.

The governor gave assent to the appropriation bill in an enlarged Executive Council Meeting today, Thursday, 10th December 2020, at Government House, Uyo, expressing satisfaction with the timeliness in state’s budgetary process in accordance with all World Bank deadlines.

Governor Emmanuel thanked the leadership and members of House of Assembly, especially the House Committee on Appropriation and Finance, Ministries of Finance, Economic Development and the State Budget Office for their hard work to avail the state with the final appropriation bill for 2021 and their cooperation in setting an economic tone for the state.
Stating the commitment of the executive arm of government under his watch to the implementation of the budget, the governor said, “be rest assured that we will implement this budget to the best of our ability and knowledge”.

“I want to thank you and your entire leadership because I’ve seen the sincerity in your heart to join hands so that we can get things done. I also want to use this opportunity to reassure you that as long as this administration is concerned, all our projects will be completed”,
Governor Emmanuel said.

Fielding questions with pressmen after the session, the Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation and Finance, Rt. Hon. Uduak Odudoh, said the augmentation became necessary following certain dynamics informed by the post-COVID situation and aftermath of the EndSARS protest.

According to him, there was need to review the proposals presented by heads of some Ministries, Departments and Agencies to accommodate the restoration of AKBC facilities, furnishing of the Traditional Rulers' complex and other needs stemming from reports of the post-COVID Economic Committee.

The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Uwemedimo Nwoko SAN, affirmed that the content of the bill represented the interest of the state and lauded the compliance of the governor and the legislature with the provisions of section 100(1) and (4) of the 1999 constitution as amended.

Politics / Governor Udom Emmanuel Swears In 31 Lg Chairmen by Oluwolex2000(m): 8:22am On Dec 08, 2020
...Tasks them to focus on service over partisanship

...debunks speculation of seizing LG funds

Governor Udom Emmanuel has sworn in newly elected Local Government Chairmen and Vice Chairmen for the 31 Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom state with a task to focus on service to the people rather than engage in unproductive partisanship.

He gave the task during the swearing-in formalities at the Banquet Hall, Government House Complex, Uyo Monday.

While congratulating the new council bosses the governor urged them to see their assumption of office as a call to service at a very critical time, harping on the need to work diligently and remain focus, avoiding distractions and divisive sentiments.

He stated that it is more profitable to deemphasize party differences and concentrate on providing good governance to improve the living conditions of the people, stressing that the party was just a platform to access the opportunity to serve as such they must work hard in line with his administration's policy thrust encapsulated in the completion agenda.

“We have only one state, one government and one people, the Akwa Ibomites, so you are elected to serve and for all of us to steer the ship to see how we can arrive at our completion agenda. Every elected person is a servant of the Most High God. You must realize that and act that way, so I charge you to work towards the completion agenda.

“As a leader you'll be misquoted, you’ll be misconstrued and misunderstood but you must stay focused and know where you are going to. Once you ensure that, you will achieve results”, he admonished.

Governor Emmanuel charged Vice Chairmen to maintain the limits of their office and work harmoniously with their principals creating a synergy that will add value to the people and charged incoming Chairmen to treat their deputies with dignity and ensure timely constitution of their legislative councils.

The state Chief Executive Officer used the event to debunk unfounded and misleading, speculations that state government was seizing local government funds. Politics / Court Sacks NDDC IMC by Oluwolex2000(m): 3:56pm On Dec 04, 2020
A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an order to investigate the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the five members of the embattled Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Interim Management Committee over allegations of N3 billion contract fraud.

In suit number ABJ/CS/617/2020, Justice Mohammed, in a ruling on an application by a Civil Society Organisation Forum for Accountability and Good Governance, restrained the affected officials from parading themselves as Board members of the NDDC.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed also granted leave to the applicant to apply for judicial review for an order of mandamus compelling the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), sued as the 9th defendant in the suit

In addition, the court restrained Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei, Mr. Cairo Ojougboh, and others from performing the functions of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The court granted leave to the applicant to apply for judicial review of the powers of the President or the Minister of Niger Delta to appoint Prof. Pondei, Dr. Ojougboh, and others in an interim capacity as members of the NDDC board.

By this order of the court, the members of the NDDC IMC are restrained from performing the functions of the board pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice which is fixed for December 8, 2020.

The plaintiff in the suit said it had notified President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and ICPC of the interim vacancy in the commission.

The plaintiff also urged that the most senior civil servant or administrator in the commission be appointed and prayed that the suspended officers are stopped from accessing the commission’s offices and files.

This, according to them, is to prevent them from tampering with evidence which could be used by the ICPC in its probe.

Parties joined in the suit are the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Senate, Minister of the Niger Delta, Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei and Dr. Cairo Ojougboh.

Others are Dr. Joi Nunieh, Mrs. Caroline Nagbo, Cecilia Bukola Akintomide and ICPC.

Politics / Remembering Late Engr. Kure As History Repeats Itself On Gov Lolo by Oluwolex2000(m): 12:55am On Dec 03, 2020
Governors Abubakar Sani Bello and Late Engr. Abdulkadir Kure share a number of similarities: both men shall be remembered as Governors of our state, both men are considered simple and humble, both men espouse patience even when dealing with the most disagreeable people in the most difficult situations. Their similarities are many, and if the report we have received is to be believed, both men shall share another similarity.

During administration of Late Engr. Abdullkadir Kure, the civil servants under NLC bought a ram, assembled and marched to the Eid ground in Minna. Like scene out of a Kannywood movie, these people turned their clothes inside-out, placed a knife in a fire till it turned completely red, and prayed against the administration of the Late Governor.

Today we all remember Engr. Kure differently but the meeting ground, the point we have formed a consensus on, is that he was a Governor honest in his dealings, and this was why the NLC led their members to perform such a bizarre act against him.

History came full circle and today Kure is fondly remembered by Nigerlites and, surprisingly, even by the same set of people who participated in that evil prayer against him. They own the loudest voices chanting Kure was the best thing that has ever happened to Niger state. Their change of heart and repentance could have been sincere for it was said that some of them even fasted for 3 days seeking forgiveness.

It is Muhammadu Buhari once said, We are all children of history and sometimes, we are prisoners of it as well. That is why we were not at all surprised when reports reached me personally that some state civil servants are again about to be misled into performing against Governor Bello the same bizarre act they performed—and regretted—against Governor Kure.

To add a little credibility to this misguided action this time, they are not only concerned for the welfare of civil servants but also the insecurity in parts of the state. They are aware of the true position of the state’s finances and know people won’t support them, hence the need to add insecurity as a concern to attract goodwill of the public —as though the situation started only yesterday.

What is intriguing is that these people are not accusing the government of lack infrastructural development; because that is glaring for all to see, they are not accusing the government of absence of effort towards provision of clean water; as tangible progress has been actualized, they are not accusing the administration of neglect of the state’s health care; because the state is making progress in that front. They are only accusing Governor Bello of neglect of civil servants welfare.

They pay no mind to the fact that the state has about 30,000 civil servants out of a population of over 5 million people. How is it fair that for the government to commit over 80% of the state’s income to serve 30000 people to the detriment of the over 4 million people?

And before you judge that the 30,000 has multiplying effect, do not overlook the fact that the roads and hospitals water and the stride towards security is for the benefit of all and definitely has far reaching multiplying effect.

Neither are they unaware of the fact that throughout the inception of this administration, a 66 months period, they had to cut back only thrice; sometime in 2016 and twice this year. And the state intends to keep her promise to reimburse the cut. This is simple.

Nor is the NLC unmindful of the fact that Niger state implemented and pays the full minimum wage, unlike many other Nigerian states.

Let me close this article by advising NLC to not go the road they have gone before and regretted. Do not become prisoners of history, for history does not forgive. Do not be intoxicated by the power you hold now to pray against yourselves for if your prayers for the failure of your own leader were to be accepted, is you, the led, who will pay a terrible price.

Bala Danladi write from Niger state.

Politics / UPDATE! Niger Government Gives Reasons For Slashing Salaries by Oluwolex2000(m): 11:46am On Nov 26, 2020
In her effort to improve internal revenue generation, there is an ongoing intervention by the Niger State Government on reforming revenue processes and information technology applications in the state. The moves are designed to institute improved health in the way government runs to bring desirable development to the people.

Further to and in line with the spirit as captured in the afforementioned, efforts are also being intensified on multiple fronts to ensure maximum collection of all revenues and blockage of all leakages. These are in line with the recent Consolidated Revenue Law passed by the Niger State House of Assembly and assented by His Excellency, Governor Abu Sani Bello.

While these efforts have begun to bear fruits, the State Government, like other states of the federation, has had shortfalls on revenue accruals to the state from Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC), as well as IGR due to recession the country just started edging into.

Despite this situation which has been on even long before federal government officially announced recession, Niger state government has continued to manage payment of full salaries for months except for June 2020. However, and quite unfortunately, the shortfall worsened further this month again, giving a direct drop of over N1billion (One Billion Naira) in state's cash accrual from the federation account since September.

On another hand, combating insecurity has equally been daunting and has taken its toll on the resources of the state, as the personnel on the frontline of opposition to the insurgents have to be kitted well enough for the task. Can the state government avoid the task of carrying out her primary responsibility of guaranteeing the safety/security of the residents at whatever cost?

In consequence of ceaseless slide in revenue fortunes of the state, amidst ever widening pressure on resources, Niger state became compelled to have a salary reduction for the month of November for entire categories of civil servants and political appointees in the state, including the state governor.

The move to reduce salaries of all categories of workers , given this preceding explanation, is compelled by existential developments, and whatever has been deducted from workers shall be returned to them once the situation improves, as has been experienced by local government workers in the state. Regrettable and painful, the debacle is apparently unavoidable, and will very hopefully, be short-lived.

It is our sincerest hope that the situation would improve soonest so the government would reimburse the workers for the deducted percentage. Government is also deeply pained by the development and regrets the difficulties it may cause.

Muhammad Sani Idris

A'IBOM GOVT. ENLISTS SUPPORT OF RELIGIOUS LEADERS FOR CONTINUOUS PEACE IN THE STATE
...sets to rejig educational curriculum for skills acquisition

Akwa Ibom State Government has renewed it call on religious leaders and faith based organisations to partner with the administration in its determination to rid the state of cultism and other forms of criminality in order to make the state an investor's haven and a safe place for residents.

The state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel made the call during his interaction with the Fathers of Faith who called on him under the aegis of Spiritual Fathers' Forum, Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday 24th November, 2020, at Government House, Uyo.

Governor Emmanuel who decried the few pockets of cultism among youths particularly in secondary institutions in the state, pointed out that cult activities will not be tolerated in an otherwise peaceful state.

"I want to thank you for the support in the war against cultism, let me say that every reported anti- social activities in the state is from the backdrop of cultism. The armed robbers we arrested last weekend, very young boys and100% of them confessed to being cultists”.he explained.

The Governor expressed dismay at some well placed people who incite the youths against government policies and programmes and advised them to redress their steps.

He advised such personalities to serve as role models to the youths, stressing that his administration wiil not fold it hands and watch few disgruntled elements disrupt the peace being enjoyed in the state.

Governor Emmanuel reiterated his administration's resolve to revitalize the educational sector to provide skills and prepare youths for meaningful livelihood.

"We want to declare total war on education so we need the support of the Ministers of gospel because we will rejigged the curriculum that we are using now and bring in an intermediate education.

" we have refurbished Technical College at Ikot Adaidem which will take on skills in carpentry, plumbing , etc and we are trying to see who we can partner and then we will bring in a new legislation for Nung Ukim to turn it to an intermediate school which will prepare our youths for the proper technologically driven ICT oriented University that we want to run".

He emphasized his administration's commitment towards spreading development and laying formidable economic foundation in the state, assuring that roads under construction will be completed before the end of his tenure.

The Governor. commended the leadership of the Spiritual Fathers' Forum for uniting the Christian fold and thanked them particularly for prayers offered and intercession to God for peace to reign in the state.

"I really want to thank the fathers of faith for prayers I've received , i don't think any Governor has received such prayers both in and outside Nigeria and by the grace of God we will succeed", he said.

Earlier, leader of the delegation and Chairman Spiritual Fathers' Forum, Akwa Ibom State, His Eminence Prelate Sunday Mbang, lauded the achievements of the state administration evident in the infrastructural renaissance across the state and thanked the governor for the rejigged of educational curriculum in the state.

Prelate Mbang informed the Governor that the forum has thrown it weight behind the state administration in it decision to proscribe cultism , saying that the administration's decision not to allow a cultist to succeed the present administration or occupy a public office is wholely supported by the forum.

He emphasised that the state cannot be plunged back to the dark days when cultism reigned supreme with it attendant insecurity of lives and property in the state.

"The Fathers of Faith are solidly behind the Governor's decision to proscribe all cult activities in the state and we decree that henceforth no cultists or secret society member must be allowed to hold any elective or appointed position in the state as we do not want to return to the dark and inglorious years where many citizens lost their lives in the state for no just cause" he stated.

High point of the visit was the presentation of Souvenir to Prelate Sunday Mbang who received it on behalf of the forum .

Politics / Infrastructure Committee Tells Contractor To Increase Pace Of Minna-bida Road by Oluwolex2000(m): 4:53pm On Nov 13, 2020
Infrastructure Committee Tells Contractor To Increase The Pace Of The Work On Minna-Bida Road

The Infrastructure Committee Chairman, Alh. Ibrahim Balarabe Kagara took an on-the-spot assessment tour of Minna-Bida road to witness first hand the pace of work of the ongoing reconstruction. Alh. Balarabe was impressed with the quality and pace of the work as he saw for himself that the company has commenced stone base laying on part of the road.

He however implored the contractors to increase the pace of the work so as to make significant progress just as the rain has receded and the traffic of articulated vehicles diverted.

Alh. Balarabe finally thanked Nigerlites for the patience they have shown and assures them that His Excellency, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, is in the know of the hardship travelers of the road are facing and is working assiduously to ensure the completion of the road in a timely manner and to the highest possible standard.

Politics / Governor Abu Sani Bello’s Quest To Fix Strategic Roads For Economic Development. by Oluwolex2000(m): 3:53pm On Nov 07, 2020
When Governor Abu Sani Bello decided to run for office of Governor of Niger State, more than most, he knew that one of the key problems of the state is the deficit in road infrastructure. Niger state after all, is only the state with the largest landmass in Nigeria covering a total of 76,363 km² so naturally it would have longer stretch of roads than most Nigerian state.

If His Excellency was to speak frankly today, I suspect he would admit that he has found nothing easy because even as so much has been done, so much more still needs doing. But for the activities of the Niger State Infrastructure Committee, which has thrown more light on the matter of infrastructure in the state, many have not been in the know of the road projects completed and ongoing in the state.

Now as members of the committee traverse the state, moving from one project site to another, the public began to see that a lot more has been done and is being done.

Today, with over 200 km of roads completed and with about 240km of rural roads currently undergoing construction across the state, and with several township roads being constructed or reconstructed, Governor Abu Sani Bello has earned the nickname Road Master because His Excellency’s stride towards road construction in Niger state is now without doubt unprecedented.

Rural Roads

Gov Abu Sani Bello means to improve the IGR of the state, and one of the actions to achieve this objective is to open up farming villages to markets so that local farmers can travel out and traders can travel into the local communities to purchase farm produce. This is why for the first time in a long time development has been made to reach the rural areas. Consequently, we have seen the construction of a number of rural roads like the 55km road Etsu Tasha in Lavun LGA, 89km road Kampanin Bobi in Mariga LGA, 22km road Shagunu in Borgu LGA, 48km in Shafini-Tungan Jika LGA, 37km Wuya-Suman in Gbako LGA, 21km Suleja-Abuchi-Izom in Suleja and 22km Old Gawu-Tuna-Farindoki which is also about to start.

Minna Township Roads

Minna today is wearing a new look thanks to the intervention of Governor Bello who has ensured that roads linking streets and neighborhoods are reconstructed. The Tungan Goro-Tagwai Dam Road, Bosso Estate road, the City Gate-Chanchaga dual carriageway, ongoing dualisation of broadcasting road, Lawu/Kinkapa road, Gbeganu-Fadikpe road, Kongila-Makera road, completion of Old Airport-New Market road dual carriageway, Brighter-Himma School road, Roads in Chanchaga Water Works, Sarkin Bosso road, Gogo-Mai Lalle road, 4no roads in London Street, Ongoing Eastern bypass Maikunkele road and so many other roads that are undergoing construction with the Infrastructure Committee working assiduously to ensure that the work is completed in a timely manner and to the highest possible standard.

Other projects are the Garima road, Airport road Maikunkele, Tayi Village road, Morris road, completion of off Shiroro road, IET road, Mustapha Clinic road and ongoing IBB Specialist Hospital-Leprosium road.

Trunk A Roads

The subject of the state of Federal roads in the state has, however, been a sour subject as a lot of the roads are in bad shape. The Suleja-Minna road has especially caused so many problems for the state. Gov Abu Sani Bello rose to the occasion and mounted pressure on the Federal Government while deploying the state’s limited resources to ensure that the road stays motor-able. Today, the section between Suleja to Farin Doki is has been reconstructed to the highest possible standard by the Federal Government and the Niger State Government jointly while His Excellency continues to pressure the Federal Government to mind the neglected Trunk A roads in the state. Currently, work is massively ongoing to complete the remaining 40km of the road. The Tegina township section which is also a Trunk A road and has been reconstructed by the state government, work is currently ongoing and about 10km has already been reconstructed from Kontagora to Tegina which is also a federal road.

Some of the indigenes and residents of Niger state have no idea the roads rehabilitated by the state government are actually the responsibility of the federal government.

Minna-Bida Road

But no road sits closely to the heart of His Excellency as the Bida-Minna road. Gov Abu Sani Bello has made unprecedented moves to ensure its reconstruction that a whooping N23billion has been penciled down for the reconstruction –the highest cost of any project ever awarded by the Niger Government and when completed, this is going to be the biggest contract to have ever been executed by any state Governor in the state.

The contract has since been awarded but the project suffers a number of impediments, the most difficult is the high level of traffic of articulated vehicles constantly travelling the road. Moves have been made to bypass these obstacles and now that we are in the dry season, work will continue in earnest as one of the legacies of Gov Abu Sani Bello

Other Major Township Roads

The major towns in the state have seen a number of reconstructions/constructions of township roads like in Kontagora, Kagara and Mokwa.

The ancient city of Bida has seen the reconstruction Bangaie road, Daracita road, completion of Dokodza dual carriageway.

The commercial town of Suleja also has ongoing reconstruction of Jubilee road, Kwamba road and the contract for Zariyawa road which had issued because of the quality of work done was terminated and will soon be re-awarded.

The historic town of Zungeru has seen a number of her township roads reconstructed too.

Politics / Olowu Of Kuta Asks North East Elders To Demand Emergency Rule by Oluwolex2000(m): 11:33am On Oct 16, 2020
The Olowu of Kuta in Ayedire Local Government area of Osun state, Oba Adekunle Oyelude Makama has asked political leaders and elders of the North East to demand from President Muhammadu Buhari the declaration of a state of emergency in Borno State as a way of clearing out terrorists from the state, the traditional ruler made the call during a stakeholders meeting with leadership of various cso's in Lagos.

The Oba, in a statement he issued on Thursday said he made the call in view of very many negative comments recently from leaders from that state on the insurgency war there which suggest that the state needs total concentration of the fighting forces.

Specifically,  he called out Senator Kashim Shettima, former governor of Borno State, to "call the so called North East leaders to order, as we don't have North East Army or Borno State Army but Nigeria army, which no section of the country has perogative of its leadership. The North East leaders should be grateful to the president for giving them so much, and to all Nigerians for sacrificing the lives of their children in Borno and the North east generally.  They should show appreciation rather than daily sabotaging security operational efforts.

"It's unpatriotic for any groups or the so called North East leaders to use the popular Endsars to blackmail the President in pushing through thier personal unpatriotic agenda. Their continuous hatred for the military leadership came to the fore when they openly condemned the Well planned Operation fire Ball recently declared by the Chief of Army staff.

"No individual or group has the right to question military operations exept the President who is the commander in chief. If the so-called North East leaders are patriotic as they claimed, we implore them to call on the authorities to declare a State Emergency and allow the military to clear the insurgents one and for all," the Oba said.

He wondered why Borno has remained the odd one out of the states in the North East in terms of testoration of peace and appreciation of the sacrifices of members of the armed forces who serve there.

The Oba who recently asked the Senate to be more creative in finding solutions to the problems of insecurity, insurgency and banditry in the country said the Borno state governor and the elite there appeared not to appreciate the sacrifices being made by the nation's armed forces in combating the over ten-year old insurgency in that part of the country.

He said he believed a full state of emergency would eliminate all distractions for the armed forces to quickly put an end to the suffering of the ordinary man in Borno and give the nation the much desired respite from the violent activities of the terrorists.

"Recently, the governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, lauded the Nigerian Army for making his state safe after years of terrorism fears. He told a public gathering that his people could remember that there was a time when they could not go to mosque, farm and market without the fear of bombs.

"Also, a pominent politician from Gombe State, Alhaji Ali Goje recently spoke in same breath about his state saying before the current administration, his oeople were afraid to go about their normal businesses because of the activities of terrorists who had gradually crept into the state and were manifesting in many forms. The man said many parts of the state came under attack from the terrorists,  the height of which he said was the attempt by Boko Haram to overrun Gombe in 2015. Be was thankful to the armed forces for making the state safe again.

"The same sense of appreciation is what has been coming out of Adamawa and Yobe states where our gallant troops have flushed out the terrorists and restored peace and order.

"It is therefore curious that the sore thumb has been Borno State where the elite appear to believe that terrorism would endure forever. God forbid. It is therefore my candid opinion that the problem of Borno be confronted headlong by the president. A desperate situation demands a desperate measure. The economy of the entire country is bleeding because of Borno and its insecurity. I strongly suggest a state of emergency there. Enough should be enough," the Oba declared.

Stop using the popular endsars uprising to blackmailing the Army leadership and the President.

Politics / Our Bus Not Used By Thugs To Attack #endsars Protesters - LBSL by Oluwolex2000(m): 4:50pm On Oct 15, 2020
Operators of the Lagos Bus Services Limited, (LBSL) have denied narratives being circulated across social media that one of company’s bus was used to convey thugs to attack #EndSARS protesters at the Secretariat Bus Stop, Ikeja.

While giving a background to the video, the Managing Director of LBSL, Mr. Idowu Oguntona stated that bus 240171 in the video was heading towards Oshodi from Berger around 8 a.m when some armed individuals disembarked from a particular yellow vehicle in front of the bus at the Secretariat Bus Stop, on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway and headed towards the direction of the bus .

“One of our buses during the normal cause of operations ran into approaching armed people this morning. When the people were sighted armed and heading towards our bus, commuters in the bus scampered for safety due to the imminent danger. One of the passengers even tried to escape through the rear window of the bus.

“The armed group, whose identity remain unknown, later went their way without attacking the bus. In fact, all the passengers were eventually commuted safely to their destination at Oshodi.”

In his words,” For the avoidance of doubt, no LBSL Bus was used to commute persons to disrupt the ongoing protests, Governor Sanwo-Olu has consistently spoken to protesters on their rights to peaceful protest, hence can not support thuggery in any form.

Oguntona added that it was quite disheartening that this incident was linked to the activities of some hoodlums. Despite the level of understanding shown by the state government since the beginning of the #EndSarsProtest.

The MD of the bus company said that in the interim, the company is forced to suspend temporarily, all bus operations for the safety of passengers and until it is safe to return to service.

He pleaded for understanding from all esteemed passengers and reiterated the rights of people to peaceful protests and condemned any attack on people participating.

Politics / Breaking: Ondo Deputy, Agboola Ajayi Gets N3.6 Billion To Sabotage Akeredolu by Oluwolex2000(m): 9:12pm On Oct 07, 2020
Breaking: Ondo Deputy, Agboola Ajayi Gets N3.6 Billion to Sabotage Akeredolu
… Teams Up With PDP, Jegede

Emerging facts have confirmed that Ondo State Deputy Governor, Mr. Agboola Ajayi is now working against his own interest and that of his new political party, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Saturday’s election as part of a larger plan to sabotage the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and state governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu.

Agboola Ajayi, has allegedly received N3.6 billion from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in order to step down for its candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede and also further malign Governor Akeredolu in arrangement that he personally admitted will shortchange the people of Ondo State.

A source that is familiar with the development revealed that the deputy governor got the offer during a late-night meeting at the residence of a PDP stalwart in the state capital, Akure late on Monday.

The source who declined to be named out of concern for his personal safety further disclosed that “As a show of good faith that the PDP will keep up its side of the bargain, the party Chieftains at the meeting were immediately able to raise N1.57 billion with a promise to give His Excellency (Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi) the remaining N2 billion before results are announced.

“The idea is that the Deputy Governor will supply damaging information on the governor while a second layer of the strategy is for Ajayi to do a last-minute midnight broadcast in which he will withdraw from the race and urge his supporters to vote for PDP and Eyitayo Jegede.

“The deputy governor was able to drive the offer up to N3.6 billion by reminding the PDP chieftains that what they were asking him to do was against the interest of the state, but they pointed out to him that he was being adequately compensated,” the source explained.

The PDP however reportedly rejected Ajayi’s demand that Jegede will discard his running mate, Gboluga Ikengboju as deputy governor within three months and replace him with ZLP candidate if he should win the election. One of those in attendance at the meeting dismissed the request on the ground that the Deputy Governor’s recent short stay in the PDP will make stakeholders wary of such arrangement
