An alleged refusal of a man to heed calls to join a political party led to tragedy last Tuesday in Effurun, Uvwie LGA of Delta State when some armed supporters of the party invaded the man's house to kill his 55-year-old mother, Gloria Ewenode and her 30-year-old daughter, Joy Owolo.

Another victim in the attack carried out at about 10pm was a toddler, who was hit by a stray bullet.

The attackers reportedly raped Miss Owolo, who recently completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, before shooting her. Both mother and daughter died on Wednesday in a private hospital in Effurun.

Narrating the incident to reporters in Warri yesterday, Aghoghor Ewenode, the elder son to the late Mrs. Ewenode, said he was the target of the attackers.

‘The Police failed us'

Mr. Ewenode alleged that officers of the Ekpan Police Division, Effurun would have averted the situation but for their nonchalant attitude as he and his murdered sister had reported the threat to their lives by political hoodlums in the area.

He called on the Inspector General of Police to order for the immediate transfer of the DPO in-charge of Ekpan Police Division, Muhammed Muazu for his failure to protect lives and property in the area.

"I was not around when the incident took place. I was hanging out in a drinking bar with some friends when someone came with a report that a woman and her daughter have been shot dead," he said.

"It was later that one okada rider came to tell me that it my mother that was shot by some supporters of a political party. This same group that had come to tell me to come and work with them. That I should come and work with them instead of the DPP where I belong. I have been an agent and a strong supporter of DPP in my area since 2003."

"They beat me up in February because of this same issue. It was the police that came to rescue me on that occasion. Because of their threat, I packed out from my mother's house in Effurun to our house in Warri. Even after that, they called me to say that I should remember that my people are still in Effurun. That if they can't get me, they will erase my family from the surface of the earth and on Tuesday night at about 11pm, they came and killed my lovely mother. They shot my sister in her private part after raping her and shot my mother on the waist."

Police investigation

The spokesperson of the Police in Delta State, Charles Muka, said the Police already have the report of the killing, but that the matter had not been officially reported.

"We (Police) already have record of the killing but we are yet to receive any former statement from anybody or members of the family. However, we have started full scale investigation into the matter with the view of ascertaining if it was a politically motivated crime," he said.

A 13-year-old boy, Precious Efurueze, was on Wednesday denied bail by a chief magistrate court in Owerri for allegedly attempting to kill former president Olusegun Obasanjo and the governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, in Owerri on 31, March, by stoning their campaign convoy with sachets of pure water.

Master Efurueze is among 18 people charged with attempted murder for participation in the attack on Messrs. Obasanjo and Ohakim. Notable among the accused is Prince Madumere, the chief of staff to the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Rochas Okorocha.

At the resumed hearing of the suit yesterday the presiding magistrate, V.C Isiguzo, while delivering ruling on the application for bail for the accused, explained that her court has no jurisdiction on two of the charges because they are punishable by life imprisonment. Mrs. Isiguzo, however, turned down the accused’s request to be granted bail until the conclusion of the substantive suit.

The chief magistrate explained that her reason for denying the accused bail is that they had been charged with felony which carries a punishment of life imprisonment if found guilty. She said the offence is a serious one and, therefore, should not be treated lightly.

Speaking to newsmen at the end of the court session, Greg Okemiri, the counsel representing the 12th to the 16th accused persons, while expressing his displeasure with the ruling of the magistrate, hinted that the reason the application was denied may be political. He was also angered by the continued detention of Master Efurueze who, he explained, under the law of the country, by virtue of being a minor, is considered incapable of committing a crime.

“The law describes him as not capable of committing crime yet,” he said. “All these things are in our law. Sometimes I feel very sad that we do not want to do things right. You see someone who the law describes as not capable of committing a crime yet, and you remand him in an adult prison.” Mr. Okemiri, however, stated that he has taken steps to see that the boy is released soon. The case was adjourned to May 30, for further hearing.

The police in Delta State have arrested a 19-year-old girl simply identified as Nelly, for allegedly organising her own kidnap with her boyfriend to collect N10million ransom from her parents.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the incident occurred between February 15 and 17, 2011 at Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state.

It was learnt that Nelly left her parents on the pretext that she was going to Abraka to process her admission to the Delta State University (DELSU) and could not return home because it was late.

Her parents were said to have advised her to stay back and pass the night with her sister, who allegedly refused to accommodate her.

Security sources disclosed that Nelly was angry when she left her sister for her boyfriend’s house only for some false abductors to put a call across to her father in Lagos that his daughter was currently with them and demanded a N10 million ransom for her release.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that her agitated father called some friends in Delta State intimating his predicament to them and requesting their intervention and assistance.

It was gathered that at this stage the police were brought in and engaged the supposed kidnapped gang in negotiation using Nelly’s GSM handset.

Though the abductors agreed to release her on a paltry amount of N150.000 down payment and another N3 million thereafter the mode of collecting the money became suspicious to them.

Security sources confided in the Nigerian Tribune that immediately the matter was reported, the first suspect was Nelly and that after three days negotiations with the supposed kidnappers they refused to show up for the ransom having suspected that police had been involved.

It was gathered that after three days of negotiations and worn out, Nelly strolled lazily into their home from where she was taking to the police station for interrogation and admitted her involvement in the kidnap saga.

“She broke down when she faced detectives and realised that there was no amount of lies that can save her. She confessed her participation and that of her boyfriends simply identified as Teddy.”
The “A” Division Police Officer (DPO), Mr Okon Effiong, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), was not on seat when the Nigerian Tribune called at his office but a senior police officer confirmed the incident,

A woman who helped to steal hundreds of identities and fraudulently claimed over £1.3m of tax credits has been jailed for four years.Olajumoke Ademuyiwa, 42, from Canning Town, a former Jobcentre Plus employee, was part of a Nigerian-led gang, a court heard. She was arrested in July 2008.

And a search of her home in Tarling Road uncovered evidence of the fraud taking place, including the details of at least 40 bank accounts held in the gang’s names and aliases.

There was also documentation which held hundreds of innocent people’s identities.

Revenue and Customs investigators also seized £25,000, which are believed to be proceeds of the crimes and will be subject to confiscation proceedings, to be calculated at a later stage.

Ademuyiwa was found guilty of fraudulently obtaining payments of tax credits, by using the names and home addresses of unsuspecting individuals without their consent and acquiring criminal property.

Her accomplice, Olaide (John) Taiwo, 35, a security guard from Camberwell, south-east London was jailed for eight and a half years for his part in the scam at Inner London Crown Court.

“The lengthy jail sentences given to this pair will act as a deterrent to anyone considering committing this type of crime.

“Over a four year period, they deliberately attacked and abused a system designed to provide financial help to the most vulnerable people in our society, by submitting over 300 fraudulent tax credit claims.”

A source who would rather remain anonymous said that the fire started at around 3:45 PM in the main building that houses the TV studio, Information Technology Department and Production Unit.

‘It specifically started in the IT department. An electrical spark must have caused the fire outbreak. Everybody safely evacuated the building as no one was hurt but the building could not be salvaged’, our source tells Nigerian Entertainment Today.

The beautiful young Nigerians, between 20 and 25 years old, are victims of trafficking, forced to prostitute themselves for little money.
"Everyone knows that. The young Athenians who gather in Psirris to have fun; the policemen who casually drive through the area to keep an eye on things; the mayor of Athens; most of all the 'customers'," says resident Miltiadis Papathomopoulos, as he stares at the girls, and the people walking by.
Nigerian girls appeared on the steers of Athens during the Olympic Games. They never left. Nobody knew where they came from, and no one particularly wanted to. Until Dina Daskalopoulou, a journalist working on social issues, thought that this could not go on.
"I did it for two reasons," she told IPS, talking of her decision to start investigating the issue. "First, because everybody, citizens and officials, had an attitude that 'these things happen, nobody can stop them'. And then because anyone I talked with insisted that no one can really go out there and tell this story."
Her story, put together after six months work, circulated Mar. 24 in Eleftherotipia, a big national daily. She found that the girls come from Edo region in Nigeria, a place which regularly provides people to global slave labour networks.
The girls are sold for a couple of thousand euros by their families, or they are lured by traffickers with promise of a better life. There are an estimated 50,000 girls from there being sexually exploited around Europe.
Most transit through Italy. They are charged up to 40,000 euros for the trip, and they are then forced into prostitution to pay their debt. Several of the women have said that traffickers, most often Nigerians, use tribal voodoo superstition to persuade the girls that if they escape or speak up, they and their families will suffer.

Yoruba movie actor, Lanre Omiyinka aka baba Ijesha escaped death in a fatal car accident. The accident however has left him in a critical condition. This movie brings back Jenifa's brand of humour in another hilarious style. Tells the funny tale of 5 village guys who pretended to be a girl to vie for a catchy price they couldn't resist in a beauty pageant. The hilarious movie focused on what these guys went through disguising as a woman,i mean the cat walk, sexy body and voice displayed by these gays. Fantastic movie with talented casts, overwhelmed by Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola muyiwa ademola's roles in the movie. Inclusion of funke akindele, baba wande helps this movie attain universal appeal (trusted for making good hilarious movies), but dont be carried away, funke played a minor role in the movie. The movie centered on a village boy named jelili who is known with this bad habit of farting (with smoke coming out of his ass) in public and other stupid acts that made some village people rebuke him. Jelili somewhat like jenifa has this big chance of going outside the village to overseas this time and not the city like jenifa provided he wins a competition. And it ended up that Jelili dreamt that he won the competition as he was taken abroad, but unfortunately, he messed up during a meeting with some white men, Jelili got over the dream, coming back to life noticing he has wet the bed with urine in his sleep, the movie has many humorous scenes that will keep you laughing from start to the end
