doctokwus: If d hungarian example were to b d standard in nigeria,I can stick my neck dat not one of our serving officials will remain in office;corruption as a standard alone will dethrone all governors, ministers& probably d entire aso rock.We can only dream of hungarian like standards;it maynot ever come to reality

I agree with you. A country where the president admitted that there were corrupt individuals and terrorists in his govt yet everything continues as usual; where a minister embezzled millions of dollars (national I.D. Card money) and was rewarded with another portfolio; where another embezzled money in the aviation but was rewarded with education portfolio; where a former Inspector General of Police stole millions but is now a free man; where it is not impossible for a road under construction to have potholes because the money meant for was being shared; where a governor was acquitted of corruption in our court in Nigeria but admitted to have stolen millions in UK court, the list is endless. SHAMEFUL!!!
Politics / When Corruption Becomes A Way Of Life! by Phemmyolas(m): 12:46pm On Apr 04, 2012
By all indications it seems Nigeria is doomed for good, and without necessarily being pessimistic one can conveniently conclude that there is no future for the Nigerian child.

It is a common knowledge that the state of Nigeria economy is in shambles, no thanks to those entrusted with positions of power and authority but who have found it convenient to siphon the birth-right of the Nigerian child abroad and live in opulence while the actual owners go abbeging to get one meal a day.
Recently, the fuel subsidy removal saga unveiled the canker that has eaten deep into our society. It crystallized the blatant manner with which the resources of our dear nation was being raped by the privileged few. The saga revealed a monumental corruption in government and in 'connected' private concerns.

A more troubling scenario was the 2012 budget proposal where almost a billion naira was set aside for 'presidential food' in just twelve months. This revelation and scores of others irked Nigerians as it was unbelievable that huge amounts were being squandered on frivolity where million have no basic means of livelihood.
Of course, Nigerians seem to have got acclimatised with "suffering and smiling", as aptly put by the late music maestro Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Naturally, the government was tongue-lashed and President Jonathan promised to "unveil" and “prosecute" corrupt individuals. But, that promise seemed to have gone with the winds. To date, nobody has been prosecuted for corruption woes that bedevilled our dear nation. Rather, other unsavoury revelations of unbridled corruption and profligacy keep starring us in the face, and since the government seems incapacitated and/or afraid of prosecuting the yet to be named 'cabal' which the government hitherto blamed for our litany of woes, those who have made corruption there stock in trade do not relent.

Recently, a House Representatives Committee quizzed the Director General of the Security and Exchange Commission, Arunma Oteh, on the downward fortunes of the stock market, a situation that has cost Nigeria and Nigerian billions of naira. During the hearing, it was revealed that Ms Oteh spent a huge N850,000 on food in one day, in violation of regulations on how much chief executives can spend. The House committee, headed by Herman Hembe, also made it known that the DG spent as much as N30 million on hotel bills accommodation in eight months.
“You stayed in a hotel for 8 months and spent over N30 million. In one day you spent N85,000 on food at the hotel; the other day you spent N850 on food...,’’ Mr. Hembe said.

The promises made by Mr. President at the height of fuel subsidy impasse convinced some Nigerians that the government may have decided to change its bad ways; that this government deserved a second chance. But that is now history. Rather than the promised cleansing, corruption continues and government do not care.
It is just logical to conclude that the government is either incapable of tackling corruption or its also culpable. And it seems corruption is a way of life in Nigeria.

Politics / Resignation Of Hungarian President: A Lesson From Another Clime by Phemmyolas(m): 12:43pm On Apr 04, 2012
Hungarian President, Pal Schmitt, resigned Monday because of a plagiarism scandal regarding a doctoral dissertation he had written 20 years ago. The scandal that dethroned President Schmitt had initially precipitated street protests in the streets of the capital, and just like every other human beings the president saw no reason why a doctoral thesis should generate such a furore because, according to him there was no correlation between his thesis and the office he held.

Eventually, the president succumbed to public opinion. His detractors argued that he had lost credibility to lead Hungary, and that it would be a sacrilege for somebody with a blemish to hold the office of the president.

And because that society does not celebrate mediocrity and because the office of the president is not regarded as a place where personal opinions superimpose public desires, the president resigned.

“In this situation, when my personal issue divides my beloved nation instead of uniting it, I feel it to be my personal duty to finish my service and resign from my presidential mandate”, Schmitt said. That statement elicited applause, even from the opposition who was consistent in their calls for him to resign because it shows true statesmanship.

But events around us make me wonder if we will ever have such leadership in Nigeria. A country where corruption and arrogation of power is the order of the day
Just of recent, Hon. Herma Hembe who chairs House Representative Committee on Capital Market was accused of bribery of over N40 million in the cause of investigating another corruption; Ms Oteh Arunma, the Director General of Security and Exchange Commission was accused of mismanagement and financial impropriety; President Jonathan early in the year said there were known "Cabals" whose corrupt practices necessitated the fuel subsidy removal that further impoverished Nigerians and the attendant mass protests that followed. Yet, nothing was done.

The above are just few of the leadership misfortunes and ‘acceptable’ official corruption that we read and hear daily.
It seems the government and the society has agreed that corruption and violation of societal norms are an acceptable canker that we cannot live without. It is sad that we have accepted negative tendencies to define our nation; that there is nothing wrong to use titles, offices and official position to rub our nation blind. SO SAD!

Politics / Re: A Northerner Must Emerge In 2015 Or Nigeria Will Divide- Lawal Kaita by Phemmyolas(m): 8:26pm On Mar 29, 2012
Lawal Keita's comment is delusional. Nigeria does not belong to the North. In fact, the North ought to stay away from power since they had before dominated power and politics and they created the problems we face today. And I don't seem to get what the man is blabbing about, Nigeria is sustained through the resources of the South. It will be a welcome relief to the other regions should Nigeria break.

Hope the aid will not be diverted. Hope it will not be a morale booster for Boko Haram whose main motive is to islamise Nigeria. Hope it will not be just like other grants that vanished without a trace. Hope the donors do not have hidden agenda. One can only hope!
