Are you saying if I go for specialize in AI in my master Programme there, I will be proficient enough to get a job.

I'm asking as a person studying CSC in Nigeria. Just wanna be sure

MackyNaija:

Thanks Sir. House sef no be big issue - for a 'modest' $250k house cheesy in Texas, a partial downpayment of 10% can be easily saved from scratch in 24months...
To say I end up for Texas during this job search, the Camry money for go for downpayment.

Stick to computer science, the options are very numerous and it includes Data Science.
More options are Analytics, SWE, AI, ML, VR, Developer (SQL, Web, Frontend, Backend, Fullstack, all forms) and numerous other iterations.

I hope I have been able to convince and not confuse you that the bigger umbrella of CSci is better.

The two years you spend in the program is an investment that begins to bear fruits immediately. From my last interaction with friends, OPT and H1B still sells.

Your proficiency should start from now.
You should at least get some background knowledge and if possible a related job experience before leaving Nigeria even if it's in Analytics or any related Software Engineering field.

Learning from scratch while already in the US is not easy. Pressure too much.

Higher Level...
Learning no deh finish and I might consider some form of certification.

Happy New Year Paccus, I usually no deh wish anybody anything because even winch go wish people Happy this n that when na truly evil full their mind.

About that, I have worked in different companies but I always find a common denominator about all the roles and that's Data and Electronics.

This is highlighted in my resume and discussions with companies during interview. As I have realised this, I gear all my knowledge and training towards these lines and build on it.

In the current company I work for, my Director checked my naija companies website and highlighted Data and Electronics during our discussions stating I was a good fit tho it was the oil n gas industry.

Hello Sir. Thanks for the great work you're doing. The information I got here is priceless.

I just got admitted for MSc Data science at American University Washington for Fall semester. Pls I sent you a pm kindly respond. Thanks once again

Good morning MackyNaija, I will be migrating to the US with an immigrant visa next year, I was searching for certifications that may get me an entry level job as an Engineer/Technician over there, I came across the ASQ certified Quality Technician(CQT) and certified Quality Process Analyst(CQPA) do you think I can get a quality technician, calibration technician, QA analyst etc position with any of those certifications, How valuable are they??
My Second option is to get a Solidworks professional certification, Do you think I can get a job with it too??
Thanks, as I await your response

Wow....Finally got to the final page of this brilliant and inspiring thread.....Mr MackyNaija thank you so much for being selfless and a light in this broken world....What you do here is amazing and uplifting....We truly appreciate your being and wish you greater wins/successes!

Pls I need an advise from you cos you are such an experienced critical thinker.......A Quick background - I graduated as a medical laboratory scientist in 2019 and after that I couldn't keep up with the poor salary of health professionals in Nigeria here...That led me into coding/ IT field where I got certifications as a data analyst/scientist from the prestigious online school(Dataquest).....In 2020, I got a remote job for a polish startup/company as a healthcare data analyst.... I am 23 years now and wanna leave this country to the US/Sweden to give myself and future the best

I scanned through your former school and cant see any masters in the healthcare field (Saw one for computer science though)...Also discovered on here of many scholarships/funding options and that one can go from bachelors to PHD without masters.

Now, I've already applied for a masters in public health in 4 Swedish universities but believe the tech field will offer me more...Should I take GRE, TOEFL etc and apply for a PHD/masters in the US (noticed PHD has better funding opportunities) in computer science/IT considering my bachelors is in healthcare? Will it work?....what do you candidly advise me to do?..Leaving Nigeria this year is a MUST!

Thank you once again......
MackyNaija:

It isn't wholly about money.

In some instances like for doing a PhD, you might only need 1x GRE fee ($260), 2x Application fee ($100 for two schools) and a flight ticket ($1,000).
Pocket money for your first month (Roughly $500 to $,1000).

The tuition will be covered by a scholarship and living costs covered by a monthly stipend from the school.

This is very doable. Chip away at this costs year by year and in the near future, you have been able to do it.

Check Middle Tennessee State University for Masters in Healthcare informatics. You certainly need to take GRE to secure GA.

Done researching about this Uni and dept...I'm impressed to discover such health-tech masters course...Thanks for this brilliant recommendation.

Now, this department doesn't require GRE and TOEFL for Nigerians...All they need is a health/tech related degree course, official Bsc transcript, proficiency in data tech skills, filling online application form, $35 application fee and 3 letters of reference.....According to them the departments selects GA....Should I still go ahead and write the GRE to stand a chance of being selected for GA? Should I also contact the department as regards this to know if there is any other requirements for GA application?.......Thanks

From what I have seen, Technician roles have many entry level openings that don't require experience or certifications. They only need your punctuality, ability to show up for your shifts and the right attitude towards work.

For "Engineer" roles, it is different..
They like their education and then any previous related American job experience.

My advice, in any field you want to build a career in, start with entry level technician/associate roles that only require you to have a pulse, go to an American school even if it's a community college at first then your path will be clear and future bright.

About your other question, companies accept/recognize world-wide recognized certifications/skills like the ones that you mentioned. If you already know what the field talks about, you'll exit the entry level roles faster than you can imagine [s]then you go blow with plenty dollars everywhere![/s] cheesy

I'll try to chip in to your question when I'm on my laptop. Long posts via mobile is laborious.
It SEEMS most schools have waived GRE and Toefl for obvious coviK related reasons.

Thanks Mogenerous for your pointers.

Thanks for your response boss, At least I won’t waste money for the Asq certification since I can get those jobs without the certificate

Each of those certifications can lead to a Process, Manufacturing or Quality Engineer roles.

My current company converts high flying technicians to engineer roles in approximately 5 years but they start at Engr 1. This is possible because of an allowance for those with an applicable "numerous years" of experience.

Certainly, contact the department to be sure. Last I checked, you might not need GRE to get an admission but you do need it to get GA. Also, you have to know they require that you evaluate your undergraduate degree so you can check WES or ECE.

Calif0rnia's cost of living is very expensive, Fresno might be fair.

It makes more financial sense to do a hack - complete a bachelors in Nigeria and come over for a masters.
A private university Bsc + an American Msc is always cheaper on average than an American 4 yr Bsc.

If you wanna struggle with tuition (Most Nigerians do), it is always 'easier' to struggle for just 1 out of the 2 years of a Masters than a full 4 year Bsc.
