Paul of former PSquare group has this to say to all of you that insult people for sounding Igbotic, Yorubatic or Hausatic...

I heard some parents pay hundreds of thousands in Lagos to have their kids learn to speak like Brits.

Let’s also stop mocking our amiable President- President Buhari. grin

And Kanu Nwankwo...
Okocha, Emenike... cheesy

I will never forget this colleague of mine who had her university education in the UK. She also had her Masters and a professional course. She had all this as a graduate trainee. Chick was intelligent, but there was a “problem”. Bola (not real name) had a strong h-factor which affected her presentations and killed her zeal to handle public speaking.

Public speaking was one of our courses and the girl fell sick before the day sef. Anxiety wan kill am. When we were practicing among ourselves, she never finished her speech. We would be giggling when she calls hair, air and things like that. We never meant any harm, but we just couldn’t hold back the laughter. Though with time some of us, especially those in her group learned to suck it up.

The day we were supposed to present, our Chief HR officer was there, along with some other top officials. She got on the stage all dressed in her suit, said a few sentences and the giggling started. She tried to continue, but alas, she dropped the microphone and ran out of the hall, she was just crying “I can’t do this, I can’t”.

It was a turning point in our training as the whole class started crying. That was the last day we laughed at her or any other person. Laughed out o, because some people wan explode from holding back laughter. cheesy

He's not lying. I swear, if you have a sit-down with some of Nigeria's richest men, the dialect in their accent is unmistakable. There's nothing to be ashamed about it. I actively keep my accent Nigerian no matter where I go or how long I stay there. Some people will go to Egypt, spend 1-2 years there, come back and start speaking in a strange accent that is neither British, American, Arabic or Nigerian. (Footballers, I'm looking at you o! Learn from Kanu Nwankwo)
grin

I was shocked the day I met ex-BBN housemate, Mercy. Her accent is not sexy at all but the girl's got business brain.

Way back people were mocked for being too indigenous, the goal was to be foreign. Someone would open their mouth waaa and say “you speak your language too much”. Are you okay? Which language e for speak?

Thankfully all that is changing. I think the commercialization of indigenous rap (and comedy) also played a role. Some people started to feel bad that they couldn’t speak fluently, enough to make some money out of it or even understand the jokes.

People want to be like Phyno or Olamide. Now everyone is tapping into their localness.

We are making progress, we would get there...

On point
Another thing that annoys me is the fact that parents of nowadays fail to teach their children their local languages.
We sef wey sabi speak, they'll look at us as local.
Just as Bella shmurda said

Our own language now sounds like vernacular to our ears

What rubbish angry
As I dey now, my dream is to japa, even if I japa
No matter the country wey I dey, my kids will speak Igbo.
If I move to USA, they'll speak Igbo with American accent
If I move to UK, they'll speak Igbo with British accent
If I move to Canada, they'll speak Igbo with Canadian accent.

cool

Education ; the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, and habits

Literacy ; the ability to read and write.

accent; a distinctive way of pronouncing a language, especially one associated with a particular country, area, or social class.

IQ: intelligence quotient a number representing a person's reasoning ability (measured using problem-solving tests) as compared to the statistical norm or average for their age, taken as 100.

If you have resided in a multi racial City like Dubai, all these nonsense accent and forming posh won't even bother you

Ability to read and write (literacy) or how you sound (accent) doesn't make you more intelligent or more educated

It's mostly Nigerians with low mentality and low self esteem that takes this seriously

He is getting it wrong. Accents are a vital part of a language. If you speak Spanish with a Portuguese accent, you will definitely sound odd.

When learning a language, you should also try to acquaint yourself with the accent. That way, you can communicate effectively with a native speaker.

For instance, I speak Hausa but with a bad accent. I'm trying to polish it. If I can, then there is nothing wrong if an English speaker decides to polish his accent. English is just one of the many languages and there should be no exceptions to it.

Tell me here and now that you're joking? wink Don't let anybody else know... grin

How did she survive the so-called "strong h-factor" knowing full well that she schooled at a university in the UK? The whites actually get curious and attracted to people
with slightly foreign accents faster than they do to those immigrant Africans (with doctored British or a localised Cockney accents)... who go about mouthing "innit, innit."grin

She didn't have to develop self-doubt while engaging in public speaking because of her accent tbh. With a knowledge of Emotional Intelligence, she would have easily overcome that situation.

I actually find women who are intelligent but with a slight accent
(h-factor Yoruba, Spanish, French, Zulu) while speaking English to be cute and attractive.

All the best.

Even his music, he doesn't try to make things look foreign and I seriously love that.
Falz, Flavour, Rudeboy, Teni and other artists that don't jump off to Dubai to shoot music videos are the real MVPs.

Don't mind una president wey dey rush to UK to check im BP at the slightest discomfort.

Trump didn't complain about buharis language (even though he used translator to hear him speak English)

Trump complain was lifelessness
