I just moved into a new apartment along the Lag-Ibadan express way Ogun State controlled by IKEDC on the 7th April 2021, it is a 2 bedroom apartment, one up and another down. I had to move in to the apartment downstairs which is like 80-85% ready due to my current financial status after my rent elapsed.

I applied for an account with IKEDC mid-Feb for the downstairs since it is only apartment that was ready as advice by their team. I applied for Pre-Paid the same day my account (ARN: IEMWVP45981 Number: 0101650571) was created and PRE-KYC ARREARS was completed as at 2nd March, 2021.

From the record on their platform, the KYC was approved by Oluwatimilehin Ojediran At 2021-03-03 05:36:57, I was also informed that a MAP officer will contact me within 30 days based on information on the platform, up till now I didn't get a response from them only to get an SMS on the 12th of April 2021 for the Bill of March 2021 reading NGN 73,667.84 .

I don't have an A.C at home and don't operate any commercial activities at home so am very surprised how I was informed through their bill I used 1,878 units less than a month at rate NGN 36.49 .

I only have on T.V, a Freezer, 5kg washing machine, 0.5 horsepower pumping machine and we are only 4 at home( 2 adults & 2 children) and mostly at home from around 4 p.m.

I sent an email to the IKEDC customer care (customercare@ikejaelectric.com) the same day 12th April 2021 and got a response on the 13th April 2021 that my request has been channeled to the team in charge to review it and they will get back to me soon.

In the same mail I requested for the status of the prepaid meter since I haven't gotten anyone from their team to visit the place which states on their website to be done within 30 days and was informed that my prepaid meter has been scheduled for metering under the national mass metering program embarked by the Federal Government as my meter application has been approved.

On the 14th of April 2021, I received the electronic copy of the monthly bill via mail and also sent an email to IKEDC if there is any update from their end concerning the investigation they promised to do. I got an email on the 16th that a follow up email has been sent to the team in charge and that they will get back to me as soon as possible.
I was a bit relaxed and hoping to get their response soonest, so that I can resolve it and plan how to make payment for whatever we both agree on.

On Monday 19/04/201, IKEDC responded by bringing their staffs to the house to disconnect the electric supply without a disconnection note been dropped (Normally this should be dropped) stating
(a) the date and time of disconnection;
(b) The reason for disconnection;
(c) The actions to be taken by the Customer to have the electricity supply reconnected; and
(d) The contact address and telephone number of the Distribution Company.,
The IKEDC staffs that came asked how much I was willing to pay as at that moment so that electricity supply to the house will not be cut off, I told them that we needed to conclude on the bill before I can make any payment, this is the first bill to the new apartment what will warranty a NGN 73,667.84 bill for 1878 units of electricity supplied.
One of the staffs arrogantly and rudely said that is how they bring it, I asked him to inspect the house if he sees air conditioner or heavy equipment and what he told me shocked me. "He said it doesn't matter" and that won't I use up to that amount of fuel in a month if they disconnect the house from public electric supply. One of the staffs now cautioned him that he should stop talking carelessly and he jokily asked him how much he is paying for electricity bill in his house before he kept quiet.
The team leader said that they will bring this type of bill like thrice before I can get a Prepaid meter and that is a normal thing.
I asked him to disconnect the light if it is a normal thing for them, I ran away from a 300k/year and you want me to pay around that same price for electricity unit that I didn't use in a quarter, is that normal?

Normally disconnection

The IKEDC staffs that came didn't even bother to roll up the wire for what ever reason they have.
They left the wire on the ground causing unsafe condition in the compound with an unsafe act nothing considering if someone or children can trip from it when it is dark.
with this act, it shows that IKEDC doesn't value their customers safety but just the revenue they can derive from the customers.

I will like to ask from people staying abroad if this is how a company disconnects electricity cable and drop on the floor without proper safety of people around.

Very sad. Under the present administration the country is now on autopilot. We get over 40k bill from EKOdc for a 3 bedroom flat. Sad thing is only 2 people reside in the house with erratic power. Then a second month with no light, they still had the guts to bring the same bill.

They also asked us to pay the bill of someone who moved out of the house and did no pay any bill despite proof that we were not the previous tenant before we can even think of prepaid meter. Such does not happen in advances clime. If I convert our power bill in the UK to Naira despite constant power it's not up to 50k.

Nigeria is surely a failing state

This sort of outrageous billing is one of the things that gets most people sick in Nigeria.

Consequently, many are moving towards renewable energy for cheaper power regardless of its initial procurement cost.

Wattbank is one of the fast growing energy storage system that hundreds of homes and businesses are turning to for electricity.

That is it sir, you pay for darkness here in Nigeria and they believe nobody can do them put them in check because the country is on auto pilot just as you said, that is why am putting this out here.
There staffs talk to you rudely, we all complain our leaders are bad but the truth is most of the people that are complaining will do worse when they are in that position.
The little power they have they become lord, because you see a new house you want the person to pay for your inadequacies in meeting your target forgetting the person has his/her own problem.

they will fraudulently put the bill by that person on your prepaid meter.

How can we stop this way they keep taking advantage of people, if we don't talk nobody will talk for us.
The government said they should give prepaid meter, it is either them or the government itself are not sincere with the prepaid that is why they keep putting bottle neck in getting prepaid.
They will fraudulently inflate your account so that when you get the prepaid they keep milking you for the next 2-3 months.

Not necessarily, I will say, it largely depends on the total load you intend to power.

In some cases, you might just be running a few hours on PHCN pre-paid electricity, while in another case, you could rely entirely on the Wattbank for your electricity needs. Interestingly, the Wattbank comes in different capacities and sizes, which can be suitable for varying individuals as could be seen here www.photizzo.com/products

That same Monday 19/04/2021, after the disconnection I sent IKEDC an email coping Ikeja forum of NERC through email ikejaforum@nerc.gov.ng they are the ones in charge of activities concerning IKEDC. I informed them of the disconnection carried out in my premises and attached pictures of the disconnection, I also informed them about the unsafe condition in which the cables they dropped in the compound is causing.
Normally IKEDC customer representatives respond within 24 hours but I didn’t get a response from them within the 24 hours, so I went to the office of IKEJA FORUM of NERC at Novel House, Plot 3, Block J, Otunda Jobifele Way Alausa CDA, to make enquiry about how to report a case like this since I didn’t get a response from IKEDC.

You can get to know the NERC forum that controls your DISCO at the below link.
https://nerc.gov.ng/index.php/contact/forum-offices/358-ikeja-forum-office
They are the second point of contact after you have contacted the customer care of your DISCO and you didn’t get a favorable response.
Why doing all these I opened a case file on the website of the federal consumer protection agency to also make an official report since they oversee protecting consumers in Nigeria.

At NERC office, I was informed to wait for 15 working days and that if I didn't reach a reasonable conclusion within that period I can write to them and address to the chairman just as detailed in the attached.
I was told to do 3 copies and bring along when coming, I asked how long the process do take and they said it might take 2 months or more to resolve the issue am counting days since my first mail to IKEDC is since 12/04/1 and all I get from them in each mail is that they are working on it and that they will get back to them. even after asking for disconnection note which shows electricity to my place was disconnected 19/04/21
