My younger brother is about to register for JAMB for the second time and my mum insists he must study medicine. What's so special about medicine?

She feels that doctors are rich. I've been trying to convince her. What do I do to help my bro because he doesn't want to study medicine?

Honestly,
We do feel that kids should be exposed to a wide variety of things - academic, cultural, artistic, social etc,
But they need to also have time to just socialize, play or do nothing.

A lot of the kids that we see who have been overscheduled and pressured academically are stressed and miserable.
They may lack social skills because they don’t have the chance to interact with peers.
They are only engaging in these activities because they are being forced to and are under terrible pressure to excel believing they will disappoint their parents or be punished if they don’t.

We understand that many parents see their children as a reflection of themselves and feel the only way for them to ever be successful, or to be more successful than they are, is to excel in school.
Unfortunately, it takes more to succeed in life than good grades.

Naija parents, we hope you learn one or two things from the above.

We Rise!

How old are you? Sit your Mum down and explain to her. If she's reasonable, she will give you listening ear

Haaa! Pls do all you can to convince her otherwise.

She is setting your brother up for an unhappy, miserable life if he studies a course he does not want to study.

Besides, I don't think there is a need to hurry. He can spend an extra year so he can clearly figure out what he wants to study. And then, with your help and other well informed persons, you can weigh the options that are currently available to him.

While he might not want to study medicine, he might not even know what exactly he wants to study.

Pls have an extensive talk with your brother, ask him questions like why does he not want to study medicine? What will he like to study? What course has he been considering and why? His answers will strengthen your points when you discuss with your mother.

Just seat her down and make her understand that medicine isn’t as lucrative in Nigeria as she thinks it is and show her examples of doctors you know around and let her know medicine is only lucrative abroad....

Why didn't she study medicine herself?

Your mom's only insisting your bro studies medicine for bragging rights.

She's not interested in the money or prestige or whatever

Also, doctors are not rich but in a country where the majority earn peanuts, they have the potential to earn more since their profession is one that cannot be dominated by an outsider since you need qualifications to practice.

But again, we know how admission works in Nigeria. It's difficult to get even the so-called "easy" courses not to talk of the heavily competitive ones like Medicine.

Whatever reason your mom wants your bro to stud medicine, instead of trying to discourage her through the "earning" perspective, why don't you try discouraging her through its competitiveness.

Good grades, money, bribery and connections are NOT enough to get you Medicine in Nigeria, even in private universities.
