folks in the house, how did you scale through when you're just learning programming and you're broke.
knowing fully well that you've got to buy data and fuel, feed and pay for family upkeeps until your big break

You need to have a support system walai especially if you want to get to employable stage in a period of six months. Thats learning languages and having good projects on ones Portfolio. If one doesn't have a support system then one needs a part time job sha and then learning programming at night but it can take a year or more to get there compared to if one is just coding 24 7.

Stay with your parents or relatives if you have one, they'll take care of housing, feeding, electricity.

Do menial jobs to buy data and fuel for generator.

If there are no menial jobs, find a stable job (those jobs that pay 30 - 50k with no opportunities of growth) and quit like 3 to 4 months into it. You could even stay up to six months, save up and quit. Then go back to programming.

If you stay in Lagos or Abuja, your best bet should be internship programs (bootccamps are expensive). There are internships that pay, it might be little though and there is assurance of job after the internship for most serious individuals.

What skill level is necessary for one to take up internships? At least one can't be a total greenhorn.

As far as I'm concerned, the willingness to learn is enough.

I don't stay in Lagos or Abuja so I don't know much about them.

I know of the popular HNGIntern tho. You could do a Google search.

Don't stop the business o so your wife and kids don't die of hunger. Continue the business then give two hours everyday to it. It will take you longer than someoen that is committing all day to it but you will get there.

It's tough o without support system, working by the side is not easy too since that would sap your time as well.
