President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the National Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission (NSIWC) to review the salaries of civil servants as well as the number of federal agencies.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this Tuesday at the National Policy Dialogue on Corruption and Cost of Governance in Nigeria organised by the Independent Corrupt Practice Commission (ICPC).

She said government also intends to remove some superfluous items from the budget in order to cut the cost of governance in the country.

“We still see government expenditure increase to a terrain twice higher than our revenue,” Ahmed said.

She urged all government agencies to come together to trim the cost amid the country’s dwindling revenue.

The minister said that the nation’s budgets are filled every year with projects that are recycled over and over again and are also not necessary.

“Mr President has directed that the salaries committee that I chair, work together with the Head of Service and other members of the committee to review the government payrolls in terms of stepping down on cost,” she said.

The minister said that government will also review the number of government agencies in terms of their mandates, adding that the government will consider merging two agencies with the same mandate.

The ICPC Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye (SAN), described the cost of governance as the driver of corruption in Nigeria.

He said the government is committed to improving the country’s revenue from new and existing sources by streamlining payroll and ensuring that removal of subsidies and reduction of the cost of contracts and procurement are for the benefits of the vulnerable.

He listed the critical area of concern to include payroll padding and the phenomenon of ghost workers.

Different government agencies are still recruiting from the clans of "The chosen ones", clandestinely, inspite of a much taunted embargo on federal employment.
This is a federal government with numerous duplicated agencies. You have the police investigating units for instance, the ICPC and The EFCC, all doing same job... A federal government with numerous unneeded workers. A federal government that borrows to pay salaries! It's just crazy!

The main reason why recurrent expenditures are about suffocating government finances is because of the "come and chop" mentality of those in power. The idea that government salaried positions are there for political hirelings, ethnic henchmen and cronies alike. The tendency to use spurious employment methods to find "spaces" for the boys who helped out during different rigged elections....

Unless an altruistic attempt is made to reorganize the federal agencies and recruitment methods, the civil service will continue to be responsible for unnecessary waste in the system.
Next is the utter atrocities going on in the solid minerals sector..

All it needs is one incident to trigger the incoming chaos.

Imagine government is broke,
Inflation is already high
insecurity in virtually every aspect of the country
I can't even imagine the level of chaos it would be.
At times I wonder if Buhari himself wants the country to disintegrate and is purposely sabotaging everything because even a fool is not this incompetent.

No doubt, Buhari is a colossal failure.

It has never been this bad.

He has performed far far below par in all areas of government. All indicators seems to be going in the negative reverse for the country.
The infrastructure Ameachi and Fashola are stubbornly driving runs on borrowed funds, which we will pay and are already paying dearly for.

How most Nigerians saw a messiah in this man still remains a misery.

HOW NIGERIA CAN PAY MINIMUM WAGE COMFORTABLY..........

1. Abolish SECURITY VOTE in NIGERIA. Nigeria will pay N45,000 minimum wage comfortably.

2. a) Abolish CONSTITUENCY PROJECT FUNDS
b) Reduce number of ADVISERS to SENATE PRES(2), HOUSE SPEAKER(2), GOVs(4), PRESIDENT(5), VP(2)
c) Reduce current ALL Political Office Holders PAY CHEQUES by 51.5%, without exception
d) Do away with special remuneration to POLITICAL ADVISERS & PUBLIC SERVANTS e.g; Purchase of Private Vehicles, Houses, granting Govt paid Vacations, paying for 1st & Business Class Transportations, etc, etc...

f) Eliminate PRIVATE PRACTICE in public workforce
g) Eliminate participation of Public Workforce in Partisan Politics.

c) Reduce current DIRECT LABOUR JOB participation by 49%

With (1) + (2) + (3) & (4), Nigeria would pay a minimum wage of N203,500 comfortably.

I'd substitute 4 for life imprisonment for both offences. Every other thing said makes complete sense and I totally endorse it!
Chioma Adichie,
We are highly honour that your very first and only comment after 1 Year and 9 months of joining Nairaland is to 'totally endorse' one of our posts.
That means a lot.
A better Nigeria is all we want.
God bless you ma!
