All the Orogun people I know speak Ukwuani and you won't know they are Urhobos unless they tell you. Case in point my neighbor married to an Ukwuani man from Okwele. It is after she died that my parents told me she is an Orogun woman.

Exactly and as I said earlier, it's usually the older generation who grew up in at Orogun who know the language alot. None of my siblings or cousins speak ukwuani but all my aunts and uncles do. This particular lady probably grew up at Orogun or her parents were mixed thus, being married to an Ukwuani man of course would make them speak predominantly Ukwuani in their home.

My dad and mum are from Orogun, but they speak Ukwuani fluently because they grew up in town and their parents spoke the language. If my mom married an Ukwuani man, I'd probably not know a thing in Urhobo if Ukwuani was the only language spoken at home. it boils down to the fact that we are intertwined though. We've always been very close with Ukwuani people.

I like the way use put the sentence together. Orogun and Amai joined hands and crushed the invaders. Quash them like the bedbugs that they are.
No room for divide and rule down South.

Yeah because it's what happened. We are very much intertwined and what affects the Ukwani man affects the Orogun man too.

We are more stubborn being that the average Orogun man, has a heart of stone when he wants and doesn't take kindly to being intimidated. Senator Omo-Agege should give you more insight about us and he speaks Ukwuani too BTW. The Amai people know this and it's rubbed off on them too.

This old tradition is common among lots of groups around the river Niger even among my own clan east of the Niger river. Today however, it is no longer in practice.

That guy (Op) is a paid Fulani Urchin. I know him very well. He owns about two other monikers on this forum causing trouble among Southerners. Majority of them are here bearing Igbo names, some Yoruba names, while some attach southern towns or identities to their names. Some equally attach Jesus to their names to make you think they are Christians and Southerners, my people do not be deceived. They are from Futa Jalon trying to use their Taqqiya on us but they have failed already and will continue to fail.

At the bolded, I don't know where you've seen this happen but I can emphatically say no! It's not like that. In the Urhobo tradition, when a man marries a woman, she becomes "his property". So his land becomes hers. So this can only happen if the husband didn’t marry her properly, or her family never gave consent- at least for the cases I've seen, except the woman is a titled woman in her home soil. I will give you an example.

My great grandfather was from Orogun and was the Okpara-Ukwu (oldest man) before he passed many years ago. His wife from Amai, went on to live up to over a hundred years and she was the Onwai of Amai. At her passing, she was first brought to her husband's house/land, some part of the celebrations were done there as custom demands, thereafter she was taken to be buried at her home in Amai.

Why was this? A titled woman especially an Onwai isn't deemed a "woman" per say anymore but a "man" who's a mother of the community. So at her passing she comes to rest in the land she led during her life time.

Modified: Now put it in contrast. Her son, my grandfather, also married a woman (my grandmother) from Amai. But at her passing, she was buried at Orogun in her husband's house. I hope it's not too complicated the way I explained it Lol

I don't know so much about all the tribes in Delta State, but I know an Urhobo girl it happened to. She told me it's their tradition. Ask core Urhobo people; they should know. I didn't make that up.

It is not disturbing. That is also the culture in my side of Ukwuani land. The belief is we are only lending you the woman and in death she returns to her father's house.

This is not necessary. But don't worry aku fesia odalu awo. It's either the prodigal son returns or he will die a nonentity!

"Ofu obi" with a non Igbo speaking group but disunity with your own brethren is nothing but exercise in futility. When election comes around there is never "ofu obi."

I have Igbo Delta in-laws who is a politician and also on appointment and NO there is no "ofu obi" with Uhrobo. This , however, is a common knowledge.

I don't know why some of us (that's if you're truly Igbo) lack diplomacy. I was enjoying the discussion here and learning about tribes in Delta until you made this unfortunate and unreasonable statement. How did you conclude that the person you quoted denies being Igbo? I have seen many Igbos west of the Niger that are proud of their heritage even though there are still some misguided ones.

I'm happy that Southerners are beginning to unite so we can better fight an enemy threatening all of us. Let's encourage that spirit of togetherness.

IKA language is easy to learn, but the thing is that we have different dialect in each clan.

Lucky Irabor(agbor) and Ifeanyi Okowa(owa),each both speak different dialect both we understand each other well.
Even the new v.c of uni of agbor, she is from abavo and they have their own Ika dialect.

Strangers think Ika have only one dialect, where as we have up to 7 dialects.

I have notice something alarming among the urhobos of orogun and it is something very serious.

They are turning to Ukwuani in mass, though some will still tell you they are urhobo by culture but prefer speaking and acting as Ukwuani people.

Few days ago,a friend of mine from that area was speaking ukwuani and saying they grew up learning ukwuani language and prefer to speak it.

Have you noticed it?

Ukwuani is an Igbo dialect and majority language spoken by over 40 million

Urhobo speakers only 3.4 million

Some people are tactless which kills diplomacy. It's not every time one gets to start this Igbo argument. Let's learn to discuss and argue in perspective. When it's time for such argument we all can slug it out.
