Reactions as man who paid N40 as school fees shares receipt on social media (PHOTO)

Back in the early 90's to 2000, school fees were not as expensive as they are now in Nigeria

Sometimes, an average Nigerians wonder why things are very costly and tend to think about the good old days

A middle aged man identified by his Twitter name as Suraj Oyewale recently shared a photo of his JSS 1 first term tuition receipt.

Suraj shared a receipt issued by the Kwara state government in the early 90's and the tuition fee then was just N40.

Suraj captioned the photo of the receipt as, "First term JSS 1 fees. N40".

The receipt made many people to ponder on the current situations of Nigeria.

How much was your school fees when you were in JSS 1?

See photo of the receipt here>>>

It's quite sad that we've gotten into this retrogressive stage as a country due to the bad leaders we have.

I remember when we have Mrs Veronica Oguagu as the Commissioner of Education in Delta State, parents feel proud and happy sending their kids to government owned schools, not because they cannot afford the tuition fees of Private schools, but She made the educational sector in the state so attractive, devoid of lackluster behaviours from Staff and affordable.

Now, most of the government owned schools are nothing to write home about, and the private schools are capitalizing on it, making it extremely difficult for the common man to afford the exorbitant tuition fees.

Adding salt into injury is the useless bandits kidnapping and killing students who are there to learn after their parents have struggled to gather the fees.

its not about the monetary figure but its value and its purchasing power back den, dt 40 box u see dt time is more like 40k currently going by d value..
i remember when our naira equal dollar back den and the naira had so much purchasing power..
dts why the first time I heard this change regime said they would Make #1 = 1$ I was very surprised wit d kinda magic they would use because it is close to impossible on a short run..
even if naija attains swift economic growth for d next , d naira would appreciate BT it won't still equal d dollar dt easily..
the regime took d economy backwards n are about making 1k = 1$...

Compare the things you could buy with N40 in the 90s and the present cost of those items.

It was not that easy to get the N40 we are talking about. The story should be in late 80s because I was part of those who paid 40 when I was in JSS class in 1998. As at 1991, the WAEC fee was N360 and I could remember, we contributed additional N29 for few of us whose parents cannot afford to pay for them.

I guess it is safe to say that your N150 at that time is equivalent to about N500 now.

In 1990, a bottle of coca cola was 20 kobo. By the end of 1992, it went up to 50 kobo. Many people stopped drinking coca cola and opted for 7up which remained at 20 kobo.

My point is; back in 1992, a price increase from 20 kobo to 50 kobo was considered a very big deal. Even though APC economic policies have harmed our purchasing power, comparing the 1990s to today is misleading. In normal terms, inflation follows the path of population and production growth. A 1990 dollar and a 2021 dollar are far apart in the USA itself.

That woman was a torn on so many private school, i remember a scenerio which played out back then. During WAEC exam i can't recall the year, there was a school close to the popular akara junction in warri where students always pass in flying colours with the help of the school machineries.

But on this particular day, after the students had finished writing there paper, normally the exam was to take about two hours but it takes them less than one hour to finish the exam and there were allowed to go home. surprisingly, Veronica paid unschedule visit to the school, she was surprised to see students going home.

She Inquired from the school proprietor and he said there have finish the exam, Veronica said, no! there have not finish that there should call all the student back, there did call them all back but you need to see eating of biro head and grumbling.

That year was a terrible year in that school even onuwaje school in Ereku were not left out. For a long time people rearly make there papers there before i left that area
