The Federal Government is not in a hurry to increase the pump price of petrol, according to Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources.

Sylva said this while reacting to the recommendation of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) that fuel price should be between N380 and N408.5 per litre.

At a virtual meeting on Wednesday, the governors called for the full deregulation of the downstream sector and the immediate removal of fuel subsidy, saying the current subsidy regime was unsustainable, and only smugglers and illegal marketers benefit from it.

The recommendation of the governors had triggered anger and resentment across the nation as many Nigerians said it will increase the hardship in the land.

But in his response, Sylva assured Nigerians that there would be no increment in pump price of fuel in June.

“It has become necessary to assure Nigerians that despite the huge burden of under-recovery, the Federal Government is not In a hurry to increase the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to reflect current market realities.”

“The current price of petrol will be retained in the month of June until the ongoing engagement with organized labour is concluded. This clarification becomes necessary in the light of recent reports regarding the resolution of the Nigeria Governors Forum to increase the pump price of petrol.

“In this regard, I would like to strongly urge petroleum products marketers not to engage in any activities that could jeopardize the seamless supply and distribution system in place while calling on members of the public to avoid panic buying, because the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has enough stock of petroleum products to keep the nation wet.”

Even if they cannot why can't we Nigerians come out ourselves and say NO?? for Army to withdraw some soldiers from Borno to the East to fight ESN tells alot how weak our security forces are at the moment....so why Nigerians still dey fear?? or dem go withdraw security officers from Borno to all part of Nigeria??

GOOD DECISION at this critical social crisis-prone period.

Of course, the cost of managing social crisis and its attendant political instability far outweighs the current "huge burden of recovery".

We obviously have an insincere government, there are plans on ground to increase, they do not want to heat things up, Nigerians could wake up on June 1st to realize petrol is not 350-400 naira per liter.

I weep for that country called Nigeria.

A lot of Nairalanders and Nigerians at large are either too dumb or politically sentimental to know that subsidy favours the rich more.

Most of the idiots lamenting here don't even have cars and generators they fuel. Meanwhile, the wealthy ones out there who fuel their V8-engine cars and big generators with cheap fuel on a daily basis are indifferent.

Mama Kamoru in Ogbomosho who has little need for fuel is being denied basic infrastructures and social amenities because the government needs to subsidize fuel for Pocohantas, Ishilove, Dominique, Seun Osewa, Davido, Timaya, Saheed Osupa, Segun Agbaje, Jim Ovia and Femi Otedola.

The poor will no doubt bear some pains in the short run but the removal of subsidy will be of great benefits in the long run.

Subsidy needs to go!
