Chapter 6

After the kiss, we didn't say much to each other till we left the beach. We were silent through the most part of the ride to her house. I could tell we were both thinking of the same thing; how Abike would react to what was developing between us, and also how Tony would take it. I was more concerned about the later, because it was had been stopping me from letting Ejiro know how I felt about her all these years. But right now, I no longer cared. I couldn't live my life regretting how things would have turned out if we never let our love blossom.

Parked outside her house now, I held her hand and she turned to look at me. She didn't have to say anything, I could tell from her look that she was like, 'are you sure you're ready for what's to come?' I kissed her hand and said, "I'll call you when I get home." She nodded before getting out of the car.

I knew she had much more mental work to do than I did, and I didn't want to rush things. She leaned into the car window after getting down and smiled before saying, "hope to see you soon."
"Will talk when I get home."
"Okay. Bye."
"Bye." I said and watched her walk into her gate before putting the car in reverse gear and backing out of the culdesac. As I pulled out the gate and was about to head in the direction heading home, my phone beeped in my pocket. I wanted to ignore it at first but on second thought, I pulled it out. I was shocked to see a Whatsapp message from Abike. It was just a greeting, but for her to have unblocked me, I had a feeling she maybe felt she had made a mistake ending things with me. I clicked on the three dots at the top right corner of her chat, clicked on "more" and then clicked on "block." I didn't care what she had to say. I didn't come this far to go back to begging for a girl's love. I put the phone back in my pocket, put the car in gear and sped off.
..........

When I got home, I saw 6 missed calls on my phone. I didn't need to check to know they were from. I scrolled through the missed calls and saw 5 of the calls were from her, but one was from Ejiro. I wondered if Abike had called her or something, so I returned Ejiro's call immediately. "Hey, what's up, I just got home."
"Okay, I just wanted to check on you."
"Cool. So...what are you doing right now?"
"Nothing...I'm in bed, staring at the ceiling, getting ready to sleep."
Cool, Abike hadn't called her, I thought to myself. "Are you going to dream about me tonight?" I said as I unbuttoned my shirt and sat on my bed.
She laughed a little before saying, "Hmm...I don't know. Maybe."
I was thinking of what to say next when my phone started buzzing. I looked and saw it was Abike calling. I was so pissed I felt like picking her call and yelling at her to stop disturbing me, but I kept my cool and continued my conversation with Ejiro. "So, what's your plan for tomorrow?"
"Umm...school. I'll be done by 4pm."
"Okay. That's cool. Can I pick you up from home around 6pm?"
"Well...I think it would be better if I met up with you somewhere."
"Oh! I understand."
"Yeah, I just feel that would be best for now."
"Okay. Umm...can you meet me at Rhapsody bar at Lekki De Palms mall then."
"Okay."
My phone started beeping again and it got on my nerves. "Ejiro, can I call you back, I have an incoming call."
"Okay."
"It would be just a minute."
"Okay."
I ended the call and picked up Abike's call, "Hello." I said as if I didn't know who was on the other end.
"Hmm. I didn't know we were enemies." I didn't say anything and she went on to say, "You didn't even hear what I had to say before blocking me on Whatsapp."
"Abike, just say what you have to say, I don't have time." I said in a harsh tone.
"Hmm. Na wa o. Anyway, I just wanted to see how you were doing? I heard you got injured at Ejiro's mom's party."
"I'm fine. Is that all?"
"So...who were you on the phone with when I was calling earlier?"
"Goodnight Abike." I said and ended the call.
I called Ejiro back and when the line connected a little girl answered the call. Ejiro came on seconds later and said, "sorry, I went to the bathroom."
"Who was that?" I asked.
"I'm Angela, her little niece." A voice said on the other end. It felt like she had wrestled the phone out of Ejiro's hand and they were both giggling. "Sorry Olu, she's a troublesome 4 year old." Ejiro said between laughs.
"It's okay. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
"Okay. Goodnight." Ejiro said. "Goodnight Aunty Ejiro's friend." The little girl said.
"Okay. Goodnight Ejiro and your little niece." She laughed a little more before the line went dead.

I dropped my phone on the bed and lay down, facing the ceiling with a smile on my face. For the first time in a long while I was involved romantically with someone who actually genuinely felt the same way I felt about her. It felt so great.

My chapters are usually 1,000-1,700 per chapter. That's my own style of writing. That has been my style for over ten years. This is why I can post multiple chapters in a week and not one chapter a week. I just thought to say that so you don't get disappointed with another short chapter.

Chapter 7

The next day, all I could think about during work was my date with Ejiro. The factory workers I supervised even noticed there was something up with me and asked if I had won a bet at bet9ja.

It was all funny because I had known Ejiro for so long, but it felt like I had just met a new girl. The feelings had always been there, but the constraint was her brother. I knew I would still have to deal with that later on, but right now I just wanted to bask in the euphoria of having someone in my life that liked me, regardless of all my bullshit.
We met around 6:00pm at Rhapsody lounge, Lekki. Most of the date was spent reminiscing on the past. I didn't realize we had known each other for 10 years. We talked about everything except two subjects; her brother, and her best friend.

"I had a great time Olu." She said as we walked towards the car park after the date.
"Me too." I said and turned to the side to look at her. It was dark now, but there were floodlights all over the car park. She had jeans on, a white t shirt, and a black jacket on top of it. She kind of reminded me of the American singer, Janelle Monae.
"Can I ask you for something?" She said after a prolonged silence.
"Okay."
"Can you hold off telling my brother about us for at least a week?"
"Okay. No problem." I said and was surprised she referred to me and her as us. Even though I hadn't formally asked her out, I'm sure she knew I would never have made the move on her if I wasn't thinking long term. With the odds against us, that would be a stupid thing to do.

"I will eventually have to tell Abike, but not for now." She said, derailing my train of thought. I nodded. We were by my car now and it was clear she wasn't ready to go as she leaned on the bonnet and looked up ahead. I leaned on the car next to her and held her hand in mine. She laughed lightly and I looked at her. "I was thinking of something." She said.
"What?"
She smiled for a while before going on to say, "I remember I once told my mom I liked you, and she would always tease me about it when we were alone." She stopped to laugh lightly. "Whenever she wanted to get me to do something, she would joke and say she would tell everyone my little secret if I didn't go."
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah, but it was all for jokes. You know my mom is fun like that. She was just surprised I liked any guy. Cos you know I was a tomboy at a point?"
"Yeah, I remembered when you played basketball."
"That feels like eons ago." She said with a smile on her face.
"It sure does. You're a totally different person now."
We stop talking and the whole place was silent for a few minutes till a red noodles promotion truck drove into the car park playing low tempo afro beats music. Ejiro got off the car and started moving slowly to the song; swaying side to side. "Ooo! This is is my song." She said and I just sat there, smiling at her dancing.
"Who sang it?"
"You don't know the song? Chike and Simi, Running to You." She said and extended her hand for me to join her dancing. I took her hand and pulled her slowly to me. She spun around and leaned on me, with her back to my chest. We moved along to the rhythm of the song together with my arms around her.

..........

I was in jeans shorts and white tee shirt later that night, laying in bed, composing my thoughts on how I was going to tell Tony I was seeing his sister when I heard a knock at the door. It was quite late and I wasn't expecting anyone. I got paranoid and thought it could be the guy I had fought at Tony's party. I didn't know much about cults, but I know they don't take likely to disrespect.

The knock came again and I slowly got off the bed and grabbed an empty coke bottle by my bed side. I was tiptoeing to the door when I heard a familiar voice say, "Olu, open up, it's me." I dropped the bottle and walked over to the door, and swung it open "Abike." I said and stopped to look at her. She had on a red silk spaghetti strap gown with a lot of cleavage exposed. I had a flash back of the last time I saw her in that dress and what we did that night. I looked at my wristwatch before saying, "It's 9pm, what are you doing here?" When she stood there and didn't say anything, I went on to say, "What are you doing here at all?"
"Can I come in?" She finally said. I stood still for a while and then stepped aside for her to come in. My paranoia was still in full gear, so I checked the left and right sides of my apartment building corridor before I closed the door and walked in. She was sitting on the bed looking up at me. Even without saying a word, I knew she came to apologize.

She tapped the portion of the bed next to her, signalling for me to take a seat next to her, but I went over to seat on the couch, adjacent to the bed. I could say I was over her mentally, but I didn't think I was over her physically.
"So what's up?" I said, with my eyes focused on her for answers.
"I came earlier, but you weren't home." She said while looking around my room. "You're always home at night. I wonder where you went." She said in a low voice. "I miss you Olu." She was doing all her best to not have to make eye contact with me now. After a prolonged silence she said, "To be honest with you, I didn't know how much I loved you till I cut off things with you." Still not looking at me, she said, "I guess you don't know what you got till you no longer have it. I didn't know what I had with you till I spent some days without you."
"Hmm. That's interesting; you looked like you were doing just fine without me at Ejiro's mom's party."
"The reality hadn't hit me then." She made eye contact now. "I didn't know how much I loved you at the time."
"Abike stop. You're just confused."
"No I am not." She said sharply, and then went on to say in a low voice, "I love you Olu. I really do. I just didn't know that at the time." I didn't say anything and she added, "I'm ready to be with just you now."
I got weak for a second because I knew she was a very proud girl and it must have taken a lot for her to admit to herself how she really felt about me. I couldn't find the words to tell her I had moved on. She got off the bed and before I realized what was happening, she was perched by the arm of the couch, looking me straight in the eyes. I froze. When she leaned in to kiss me, I pulled back and she had a look of disbelief on her face. I got off the couch and walked over to my reading desk on the opposite side of the room from the couch. I leaned on it and looked her.The shock on her face slowly turned to one of sadness.
"Abike, I'm sorry, but I have moved on." Her head went low in disappointment. "I'm sorry." I added.
"You found someone else?" She said, with her head still low. I didn't reply her and the room was silent for a couple of minutes before she said, "Okay." As she got off the couch and headed to the door, I felt really sorry for her. I had never seen her look this vulnerable before.
"I'll walk you to the gate." I said as I came up behind her. She opened the door and stepped out. I walked out behind her and we headed down my corridor to the exit, without speaking.

She had her head buried in her phone as we walked to the gate. "My uber ride would be here in 5 minutes." She said as she stepped out of the gate.
"Okay. I'll wait with you." I said, standing uncomfortably next to her, with my hands behind me.
"Olu do you hate me?" She said after a prolonged silence.
"No I don't hate you."
"The way you spoke to me on the phone yesterday... It sounded like you despised me."
"I don't despise you Abike."
"Okay, I guess you were vexed i was interrupting your call with your new girl." She said and I was silent. She looked at me for a while before saying, "Olu, we've been apart for just about two weeks, I don't believe you can just fall in love with someone else that quickly." I didn't say anything and she went on to say, "I know you don't love that girl, whoever she is. You just want to punish me."
Before I could reply her, her uber ride, a red Totoya Camry showed up. "Bye Olu." She said and walked off towards the car even before it stopped.
"Bye." I said and stood there till she got in the front seat of the car. I watched the driver of the car turn around and drive off before heading back into my compound. As I walked back to my apartment I couldn't believe how the day had turned out; one moment I was on top of the world with love with a girl, the next moment I'm rejecting the love of another girl I used to love.

Cool stuff. .....Abike has a point sha. Took dude a break up from being unofficial f**k buddies with her to suddenly realise he's loved Ejiro all this while. I just have this feeling Ejiro is just a rebound and the fact that she's always been around adds more to it.
