Why Are Females Not Interested In IT?( Esp In Nigeria) by Shedrach00(m): 11:23pm On Jun 02, 2021
Hi everyone.

I've just been thinking why ladies( esp in Nigeria) aren't interested in IT or ...
What area in IT can they focus on?

Please let's contribute to this, it could help some of them who wants to choose this path.
Thanks

Yeah, teachers, parent and sometimes social settings don’t encourage girls being techy.

Most people find it awkward when girls wanna got into tech. There is always a stereotype of how productive it is for a female

True.
Or let's say they are trained to nurture and for domestic activities.

When they have not finished doing tiktok videos, making up, showing cleavage and laps and dancing?

The same reason why they are few in engineering. They can't do it.

Most females don't like hard stuff, including programming

I don't want to sound condescending but most of the females I know are just not ready for these things, they'd rather waste their time on things that add no value to the life. Some will tell you they have no data subscription yet you will find them on all social platforms wasting their precious time. I also know a few who are passionate about tech but they lack the resources.
I think the problem has to do with their mindset or culture like someone mentioned above, they think tech is for guys and honestly tech benefits the females the most. A lot of females that I know who are in this business are all making it big. I don't know how we're gonna do it to convince them to drop their nonchalant mindset and focus on their future.
Many think the men are supposed to be the cross bearer, see, if you don't struggle for yourself nowadays, the men of nowadays are ready to use you and dump you if you have nothing to offer. It is better late than never, you can start creating a future for yourself and tech is a very feasible option for you.

This is on point!
Most of them have this dependent attitude, yet they can't bring anything to the table. They so much embrace victim-hood, thinking that's how it should be.

Like you just mentioned nowadays if one fails to take responsibility and accountability for your life, you'll always be a victim.

When I was on LinkedIn yesterday I saw a lady abroad being employed by LinkedIn, she's a data scientist also a Nigerian.
I just hope ladies would embrace this path and make a better future for themselves.

And tech journalism too. They are always writing articles about how-tos, especially in digital tech but do not really practice it. Thousands of them on Twitter creating threads about CSS, JavaScript and PHP tricks but do not have web projects (which is more popular) in their portfolio. Most don't even have portfolio projects.

...And they always get hailed as "women in tech" for doing the barest minimum. The system rewards their complacency.

What am saying is that it’s no fault of anyone that females are not into tech, we all have equal opportunities to be whatever we want to be, if women are not into tech is because they don’t see the need be into tech

Get lost bro.
Did I blame anyone?
Did I not even say even female believe it is a male something?

Where I work our team lead is a woman... so I don’t get your point

I was only mentioning possible reasons why they don’t go in tech.

If you’re talking about programming and hardware support, yes, it is mostly Nigerian men. Guys on average have more interest in things and how they work, while women on average have more interest in people and relationships.

That engineering and IT are mostly male does not mean women are oppressed any more than medicine and teaching being predominantly female means men are oppressed. If some professions are mostly female, then by definition, some professions will be mostly male.

If you include roles like assembling the circuit boards, working in a call center doing tech support, the gender ratio is closer to one to one.

It's not by force. By the way boys/men love to show off, "yes look at us we are the strongest sex" "oh and we love sciences and engineering, we're way smarter than our female counterparts" blah blah blah

It's not like they can't do it but many of them are not interested.

Women show off more.

Many people (especially women) can't do it. I remember in school when we were doing Fortran and Matlab, most (not all) girls hated it.

I have a question tho, why do most women just want to be a nurse? grin

In reality, men are created to be more stronger than women. So, men always handle strong professions more than women.

How many women are in engineering ?

How many women love mathematics ?

Tech is not really easy to learn !

So, they find it difficult and gives up at the long run.

I am an IT tutor at NIIT. I must tell you the truth, women drops out of an IT program (s) at long run. They finds it difficult. Infact ! They are weaker / lesser beings indeed.

I have been thinking it's only me that sees this.

I hired one last year.
If she posts 'tips' like this, you'll find 800+ likes and 50+ retweets.

I gave her 4 projects to do, paying her in $/hour.
Guess what? She failed woefully. One by one.
I didn't condemn her because I believe there is always room for improvement. I guided her on how to even go about it for the remaining 3 jobs and I had to finish the rest myself.
I was asking myself why I even had to give out the projects since they are simple tasks I was just too busy to do which I should have created a few hours in the night to do.

I terminated the contract after paying her for all the hours she did and even gave bonus and wished her well.
She still continues her :
"Tips to be an Expert in UI/UX, A thread "
thing. SMH

cheesy cheesy LOL.

I can't help but see their posts 'cause the Twitter Topics I follow and people I mostly interact with on Twitter are in the (digital) tech space and Founders/Venture Capital circle.

I use some of their tips though. They do the 'research' by crowdsourcing tips and help tools all over the internet while I get them by simply logging in.

I think they should specifically call themselves "tech bloggers" instead of professionals to avoid the confusion. Something like biology teachers and actual health workers.

The only way of being a digital tech person is by actually doing it, not advising others to do it. Your work should speak more.

If you already have basic graphics design or web design skills, it's easier to transit to UI/UX.

There are resources on YouTube to begin with (I prefer visual practical guides as against just text). There aren't many people doing UI/UX around but if you learn the basic or intermediate graphics design (which more people are into), you can self-teach yourself to become a UI/UX designer with resources on the internet. smiley
