Hello everyone,
Bear with me pls, this might be a long read and I apologise in advance for any grammatical error.

Recently I've had a lot of thinking about my life after school, how I can finally support my family after I graduate this year, I am the first son and the first child in my mom's extended family, so I have a lot of people looking up to me, and we only have one source of income in my family which is my dad, and recently he developed a health condition which affects his eyesight, and that is making his work nearly impossible.
The problem now that I'm facing is that I literally don't know what I want to do after school, normally I've had this notion that I will cross that bridge when I reach there, but now the bridge is so close and I have no idea of how to cross, to make things worse, I saw my result this semester and I failed two courses which will make me to come back for an extension, it makes me sad whenever I think about it, cos my dad will have to continue his risky job (thats even riskier cos of his eyesight) for a year or so
Sad part is that I can't even think of any side job that might be profiting me while in school or any work that I can do without a certificate, my friends aren't giving me anything useful, I wanted to learn graphics design, I'm passionate about editing photo and videos, I also wanted to learn animation back when I was in secondary school, but my parents killed that dream telling me to go for a professional course, back then they were still thinking school is the only answer to being successful, now I regret allowing them to let that passion die.
Right now I need you guys advice if you have any concerning my situation, or if you've being in a similar situation like mine, I need to know how you made it out successfully

I will accept your criticism, advice and whatever piece of info you can share with me

Chief, there are limitless opportunities online to learn and work. Use YouTube for learning and Upwork to work and earn in dollars. Also, seek ways to find solutions to daily challenges faced by people around you. If you do this, you can easily make a livelihood.

The worst mistake I did while in school was not learning any meaning digital skill before graduating. It is now at 30 that I realized that I have been a fo*l all along, and to make matter worst, I'm also the first born.

My brother here is my advice. Learn programming, or animation, or video editing, or even graphics design. Don't lose hope on getting a job after service but make sure you learn any of these skills, in case

I understand your situation.

See OG many of us were once in your shoe but we didn't allow fear to get the better of us.

When I was in school, I knew what was expected of me considering the background I came from.

I was scared of the future but didn't allow that fear to get the better of me.

I dedicated more time on learning new skills and at the same time studying like hell

The worst that will happen to you now is if you leave school without any skill... You may regret it.

Learn that graphic design very well and from there you can upgrade to animation and web.

Secondly, do not dwell on IT skills alone, learn some things outside your course... I was in computer science then but was always finding myself in chemical engineering and food technology department. There I learnt how to make liquid soap, perfume, disinfectants, peanut burger, cookies, and so on to serve as a buffer incase IT skills and certificate fail me.

Today I am glad that after school I have dumped my certificate and hustling with both IT skills and also peanut burger productions which are paying the bills quite well.

You will come out fine if you keep focus and not allow fear of tomorrow to consume you. Peace

The biggest step is realizing you have a huge responsibility. Congratulations, you’ve crossed the first step. So many undergraduates do not realize the world out there is not a bed of roses until their final year. Some don’t even realize it even during their NYSC until their POP. That’s when they start thinking about which direction they’re headed to. Should they stay back? Should they travel home to their parents? etc

I understand how you feel. I studied a 5 year course. In my 4th year, I knew I wouldn’t graduate with a good result. I knew I wouldn’t be able to compete in the job market with graduates with better results and years of experience. It was depressing. I literally told myself my future was not bright.

The remaining part of my time in school was used for brainstorming, just as you’re currently doing. I later immersed myself in programming which I’ve always had passion for.

It’s been quite a journey but fast forward to today, I’m a Software Engineer with 2 full time jobs grin

The bottom line is discovering what you’re passionate about and following it up with the last drop of blood in you

You are sad and depressed because you failed two courses?

So tell me what should our government that have been failing us do?

Failure is normal things of life.

Life is like a journey (as we all know) You only know where you started but you don't know where you are going yet.

So brother, just keep doing your thing and also find another thing to do.

How old are you and what is your current CGPA? If you're already in your mid 20s and on 2:2 or lower, hit the streets. Things are red in the labour market. Seems like you don't want to get dirty. Like laundry, factory or car wash jobs. You want to sit with a laptop in a cool place to make easy cash. How many siblings do you have? Is there any star in the family who can get scholarship opportunities? At least that will be one less responsibility for dad. Tell all your younger ones to go and learn a skill. Do it now. Fashion design, make up, AC and fridge repair, etc. Between now and next year all of you should be skilled in one trade or the other. My tailor is doing her NYSC now and she charged me 12k for skirt and blouse. When rainy season starts you will see my landlord with hoe and cutlass going to plant yam and okpa. So that he can save money on food stuff. The man has houses scattered around town and he sells building materials. You will see him with his tattered shirt on one old pick up in town. On Sunday he will go to church with his Benz.

all I see here is "I wanted to, I wanted to". You went to school and u are not seeing that as what can profit you, then I ask why did u go to school in the first place. You have corrupt ur mind with the believe that u can't get a job when u graduate. that thought is not giving chance see how positive the school may help u. Go and join u father in his business, I guess he is a welder. Put what ever u have learnt in school into it, do some rebranding I'm sure it will profit you.

Lots of Nigerian youths are too comfortable with mediocrity! Yes the country and the government is no good but are we really that worse than India, Pakistan or Yemen? Yet we see many of the youths in those countries excelling on Fiverr, Upwork and other freelancing sites.

Most youths don't graduate university before 24, most while in the university never bother to learn life skills or side gigs that can bring in income, y'all keep dreaming about graduating and starting an imaginary job earning 200k and above. Nigeria produces over 100,000 graduates a year, the number of available positions paying 100k or more starting salary is less than 20,000, how una wan do am?

The sooner you realize the future is innovation the better! Someone bringing in zero income is a lot worse than someone bringing in 100-300k per month from side gigs alone. BE WISE, there are lots of things you can do as a freelancer and still have time for other things, invest in your damn self and stop worrying about the things you cannot control like the Nigerian economy.

Examples of good skills:

1. Graphic design
2. Search Engine Optimization
3. Youtube Marketing
4. Article/product page writing
5. Social media growth(Follow & unfollow method)

Just say to yourself "a piece of paper called certificate won't determine my life, it is God that will determine my life".i said that to myself during my final year when I was thinking of bribing one of my lecturers. I spent the money with my girlfriend,i bought ice cream and snacks with the money. My first job after youth service was with Glo, second job with Exxon Mobil. Just be honest and humble, dont steal. Long read but imma be with you shortly !!!

In Nigeria, graduates who are worthy both in character and in learning are roaming all over the streets with no jobs, but hoodlums, illiterates, political thugs, mentally unstable people who were used to cause unrest during the election time are recruited into the police force by politicians. This is what we will continue to get in return.

If you are yet to get a job, you might want to read this.. .....

Cheers !!!

Let me give you a brotherly advice, and I hope you work on it...
First of all I counsel people and I have done that on nairaland for a while... I have met great and good guys...
I dropped a story about my experience teaching in two schools as a corper and would not mind partnering with schools in abuja, but some accused me of looking for teaching job... Never ever mind what people say...
Back to the matter...
As a graduate, teaching and earning 15k, e no bad... But once you have a good (android) phone, go to any car stand of your choice around your area... Listen well, any good car stand and ask to see the manager... Tell him you want to help him market his cars and get good buyers... 90% of car stand managers will sign u on... Tel him you will be paid a small commission after sales...
Pick up your phone, snap as many cars as your phone memory can take, open a dedicated twitter ac, IG ac, Facebook ac, WhatsApp ac, ac etc... Take out time to post this cars, make sure you have the actual prices of this cars... You can add as much as #250k on it... Bring down the negotiations to as low as making #50k if need be just so I can sell. Set your monthly target... I assure you, if you get I client in a month, u make around #100,000k once you start growing, you can get as much as 5-10 client from all over the country and that hits you over #1m for just helping others sell their cars, Note all you invested was your time, energy, phone and data... No big financial capital...
Do not restrict yourself to cars, go for industrial machines as well, caterpillars, mikano gens, any thing, then you look for those big companies that need them and try to call their attention to it or market it to them... You may not sell in 3 months but when you manage to get a client to buy just 1 caterpillars, my brother you will instantly forget that u suffered before...
A friend of mine was marketing a silo for a local wielder, he received a call all the way from kebbi state, the purchase was made in Ilorin, he made #1.8 mil from buyers and #400k from seller... He still got a referral from that deal. Wake up bro...
Within a month or two, come and pay (tite).
I drive uber/bolt in abuja, market cars, sell commodities such as beans, maize, wheat,
ginger, onions, name it... In bags and tonnes
And I make nothing less than half a mil monthly...We all blessed my nigga !

Reach me privately if you are interested in gadget importation and sales from US.

Chai I feel for you bro. I was in your shoe in 2019. I didn't even see the extra year coming because I worked so hard in my final year but yet my devilish HOD had his way. But every opportunity is a blessing.

I'm lazy to type here shall..but let me drop this. (if NL support VN I for drop am ASAP)

During my IT just a semester before my finals. I saw the red flag of hunger looming after my final year. I ventured into freelancing and took is so serious like my life depends on it.

Bro,that was how God showed mercy. After finals I became so serious, thou it wasn't funny but I still believed it will work.

Long story cut short, I made good money within six months that I managed to combine with my friend to start my e-commerce business. And God just changed the whole story till today.

Intact I handled my school issue without requesting a dime from anybody.

The skill I learnt was Copywriting and I worked on Upwork. And that was my saviour.till date. God bless that platform for me.

I will advise you on this, invest in quality friends, guys that are business-wise and not Olofofo friends.

Avoid women except the quality ones.

That fear will only trigger you to be serious cos no one is there for you.

Face it like your life depends on it. God will surely connect to people that will help you.

I will drop this last line for you..

Whenever you're intentional about your growth, the universe will fall the lines in your favour.

Since you are passionate about things like graphic design and animation, learn how to use Maya, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop, then register on Upwork. Some Nigerians have made tens of thousands of $$ doing this.

They likely won't accept you with just Illustrator and PS.

There are free tutorials on YouTube, and lots of $10 ones on Udemy.

Well I'm not in 9ja, your best bet is Youtube, there are lots of materials on Youtube and Google that are free. All it requires is time and data. Once you can master photoshop, you can master anything.
