Xenophobic attacks happen in poor and marginalized communities so there's definitely some truth to your last paragraph.

But xenophobia as a philosophy in SA is found in both poor and better off communities, among the illiterate and the educated. Middle class and rich families also attribute high levels of crime, drug dealing, innercity infrastructural decay and littering to African immigrants in particular, so until communities such as Nigerians dissociate themselves from drugs, prostitution, human trafficking and building hijackings, SA attitudes won't change against u guys.

Checkout this article by a Nigerian publication and written by a Nigerian journalist about what Nigerian hustlers are up to in South Africa. Trust me envy or ignorance is not to blame for how South Africans feel about Nigerians, when it's very clear what your brothers are up to in most parts of the country.

Brexit happened due to the high levels of EU nationals in the UK
Trump happened (in part) due to the illegal migration problem from Mexico and South America
Italy, Germany and France experiencing the same disquiet from their citizens
