Someone told me that I can connect the PV inverter to the load side of the battery inverter. I will explore and do a new video when I do

Exactly!
You wouldn't be limited to the 5kw of your hybrid.

Guys, I will like to know if some of the veterans here and those who have had running systems with Lithium battery up for a while, have actually done cost analysis of your system in relation to cost of grid? Like Ikejaelectricity tarrif I believe is about N30 per KWh or there about. Is it possible to both generate and store power from solar at such low rate? Or is the advantage only in the constant electricity derived? I did some rough calculations for an off-grid system and it appears even in 10 Years I might not break even compared to paying PHCN.

Interesting... And I'm glad you brought this up.

So in my situation, PHCN is N60 per KW and power is almost 24/7. Even if they take it, it's typically not for more than 2hrs a day. I have to be practising load shedding in my house, just so I can afford it by turning off power from 11/12am till 7pm in the evening. Even with being economical, I'm still using about 800 to 900KW a month which if you do the maths, it's costing over N50k per month

I'm in the middle of building a 5KW system with lithium batteries. and I've calculated the payback period to be 5 to 6years. So for those paying N30 per KW, your payback will be over double. BUt then, the major advantage is I will not have to be so power conscious anymore. Regulating consumption will be a lot easier since I've also made my house completely smart. So I can make "smart rules" to keep consumption optimal always so I would never have to rely on the grid. (Or at most Maybe 5k per month or something)

That's the plan anyway

Hello @Ceaser. I want to order a battery pack from the Jos guy whose number you dropped some pages back.

Can I trust him to deliver?

It depends on the user.
Public power will always trump solar if it's stable. Someone running a 20kv ice block machine will not think of a solar setup.
Many parts of Nigeria including Lokoja, Suleja, Kaduna, etc have a direct line from the national grid where power is almost 24/7. Those people living in these areas don't install solar. The aedc bill is about N46 kWh and 64 kWh for commercial users.

I added a PV inverter to my system. I am shocked at the relative ease with which it was done. I know a few within the group have done the Victron and Fronius set up. This was much easier and rewarding.

Good to see good PV installation. I don't know why I see lots of installs where the panels are directly on the roof or the gap between the PV and roof is just so small, that PV will not last. I see this everywhere it's annoying

interesting video, however can you explain for a layman what is actually going on there.

is a pv inverter different from a hybrid inverter?

why did you connect the output of 1 inverter to the gen input of another inverter?

It's different from an hybrid inverter, see it as an external CC but one that syncs 100% with the inverter it's connected to. So instead of connecting an external CC directly to the battery, you connect the PV inverter to an actual inverter which in turn takes both power from the PV inverter and it's own to charge/power the household

The numbers and economic viability will depend on each specific situation.

My PHCN tariff where I live is over 65naira/kwh. I am entirely offgrid and my energy logger tells me I use at least 60kwh daily - I save 3,900naira daily on electricity and over 1.2million of PHCN bills avoided annually when I backout my annual diesel and backup gen running costs.

For me, offgrid with Lithium makes perfect sense and not counting the convenience of 24/7 power on tap.

If I would change anything then I would have used cheaper Lithium batteries vs. premium that I have and this would have made the economics better.

I have corporate customers who just impose a system design that is not cost efficient e.g pay for 48kwh of Lithium backup (4kw data center loads for 10 hours) yet use the system as a UPS backup - batteries only drain for a few minutes upon grid failure until the Gen starts - nothing I have said has convinced them to let the battery cycle for at least 4 hours upon grid failure and avoid needless generator running costs.

One other scenario that I have found to make sense is an ESS or ESS like system for people with 24/7 PHCN supply (estates on IPP or priority service)

Basically you oversize your panels for daytime use and only use the minimum battery size possible. This way you run the house loads off PV during the day and keep battery capacity for self consumption and backup against grid failure.

I have a number of residences on this sort of scheme and all show good results on average 28kwh/d generated from 7kw of panels - at 60naira per kwh this works out to 1,680naira per day or 600k savings per annum from a system that cost under 2million for the solar related components.

This suggested setup is even best for mini SME, since operation are mostly day hours tied.
