Lol. Just one or two in Ibadan and none in Onitsha. The whole of Onitsha is just one LG out of the 11 LGs that make up Ibadan. Yet you somehow believe that the 11 LGs have only one or two skyscrapers. I've mentioned 3 buildings with mpore than 10 storeys already. There's also Agbowo shopping complex with 7 storeys too. Same with Premier hotel with 10 storeys. MJ glass house with 7 etc. Like I said you don't know Ibadan which is why you claim ALL the buildings in Ibadan are bungalows. I can bet Oluyole LG has more high rise buildings than the whole of Onitsha. But will you agree? Go and rest. You're ignorant.

Lol. So you can find original D&G wears in Onitsha market? Not Dozie and Goddy o

I stand on what I said, Ibadan is just a big empty city all the houses in Ibadan will shrink into Onitsha if they build in dense closely croweded together manner that Onitsha build to accommodate 6 million people

I repeat there is nothing you won't find in Onitsha both original and none original Onitsha are the biggest importers in Nigeria they import almost everything

What you said you can stand by but you are standing on shaky ground. Ibadan cannot shrink into Onitsha because Ibadan is the largest city in Sub-Saharan Africa while Onitsha is largely unknown in the larger scheme of things.

Most of the goods imported into Onitsha are Chinese low quality and cheap goods. You cannot find an original D&G or Luis Vuitton in Onitsha market. Stop claiming what is not. Onitsha market excels in low quality goods not original desiner wears or jewelries the likes of which you will find in ShopRite. Learn to rest

Unlike your empty wailings here I have lived in both cities and clearly know who is more populated.

Onitsha just crippled your Ibadan on a world statistics of the most build up cities and you are still boasting of largest city in West Africa, yes Ibadan is a large empty land mass city that's all

Whatever you say about shoprite, it can not survive in Onitsha, the thousands of people that troop into Onitsha on a daily basis from other states most of them have shoprite and other malls in their states, they troop to Onitsha cause Onitsha have what they want according to their pockets .

Build up only counts buildings. There are a lot of data that are excluded. It is a very narrow view.

If you say shoprite cannot survive in Onitsha it means the people in Onitsha are too poor to afford it not that it has competition from niches.

People come to buy cheap and low quality goods from Onitsha not high class expensive goods. They know where to look when they need that

SouthEastFacts:
Demographia recently released the largest built-up urban area in the world for 2021. Here's how Nigeria's top 15 cities compare with the rest of the world and their estimated population.

Lagos

Position in Nigeria: 1
Position in the World: 20
Estimated Population: 15.5 million

Onitsha

Position in Nigeria: 2
Position in the World: 64
Estimated Population: 6.9 million

Kano

Position in Nigeria: 3
Position in the World: 105
Estimated Population: 4.6 million

Note: we could clearly see that both Lagos and Onitsha are more populated than Kano according to international estimates.

Ibadan

Position in Nigeria: 4
Position in the World: 141
Estimated Population: 3.7 million

Abuja

Position in Nigeria: 5
Position in the World: 152
Estimated Population: 3.5 million

Benin City

Position in Nigeria: 6
Position in the World: 287
Estimated Population: 1.9 million

Port Harcourt

Position in Nigeria: 7
Position in the World: 324
Estimated Population: 1.7 million

Kaduna

Position in Nigeria: 8
Position in the World: 331
Estimated Population: 1.6 million

Benin City and Port Harcourt are more populated than Kaduna City. It seems the North inflates its population figures.

Enugu

Position in Nigeria: 9
Position in the World: 423
Estimated Population: 1.3 million

Ilorin

Position in Nigeria: 10
Position in the World: 434
Estimated Population: 1.2 million

Aba

Position in Nigeria: 11
Position in the World: 450
Estimated Population: 1.2 million

At position 450, Aba is one of the most built-up urban cities in the world. The city is more built-up than the capital of Czech Republic Prague (464), Seville in Spain (487) and the capital of Serbia, Belgrade (491).

Warri

Position in Nigeria: 12
Position in the World: 500
Estimated Population: 1.1 million

Nsukka

Position in Nigeria: 13
Position in the World: 536
Estimated Population: 995k

Nsukka is a village in Enugu and home to the Univeristy of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Maidugari

Position in Nigeria: 14
Position in the World: 594
Estimated Population: 879k

Despite being war-torn, Maiduguri is one of the most built-up urban in Nigeria. Impressive!!!

Jos

Position in Nigeria: 15
Position in the World: 602
Estimated Population: 867

Next time you want to insult your country, just know that Lagos ad Onitsha are more built-up than these heavy-weight global cities;

1. Dubai
2. Madrid
3. Singapore
4. Accra
5. Milan
6. Barcelona
7. Cape Town
8. Kuwait City (capital of Kuwait)
9. Detroit
10. Athens
11. Rome
12. Manchester City

Built up with what?

Ramshackle wood and rusted roofing sheets?

With sanitary conditions so bad even a dog would wince?

Oh please.

There is ShopRite in Onitsha. Check Google grin grin
Agbegbaorogboye:

London has 18th century architecture. I guess Onitsha is better than London.
Onitsha is less than a fifth of the size of Ibadan so I don't see how all the buildings in Ibadan will fit into Onitsha except you have a plan I don't know of.

Really? ShopRite has its own niche and local markets and malls do not fall into such niche. So, no way ShopRite is competing with 2by2 shops selling substandard goods in Onitsha main market. That's pure fallacy

Agbegbaorogboye:

Show me a 10, 14 and 25 storey building in Onitsha and then we can start having a conversation about what can fit into what.

I already told you Onitsha main market and ShopRite don't have the same niche. You just alluded to what I've been saying about the cheap and low quality of Onitsha goods. At least you can believe yourself if you have a problem believing me.

This is funny. Onitsha sells original designer wears? Oya show me. Who do you think you are talking to?

New York City is densely populated not New York State. Even at that New York City is not even among top populated cities on earth.

New York City is less than 800km2 with over 8million population, Onitsha metro is about 2000km2 with about 7million population.
I don't understand why you are comparing the two. Onitsha metro land mass is almost 3x that on New York City and still not up to New York's 8 million population.

There's clearly a case study on city planing in the developed countries. That's makes is easy to manage population to avoid huge density.
This planning is not effective in most Asian countries and rapidly growing African countries like Nigeria.

I have been waiting for you lots that are ranting that Onitsha is not up to 6.9 million to bring something tangible to counter that above stated facts, I want to tackle them one by one.

Onitsha has less land that's why it's built up. So it's not due to any deliberate aesthetics. It's a forced choice. Meanwhile Ibadan is well laid out with GRAs that are well planned and aesthetically pleasing.

Shoprite can and is surviving in Onitsha. You're making it sound as if there's no shoprite at all in Onitsha. There is and it is not closing anytime soon. But Onitsha cannot have more than one because it does not have what it takes economically to support such type of world class investment in their multiples.

As you yourself alluded, Onitsha can only support low quality and cheap goods. Shoprite has led to the opening of more malls in Ibadan. Ibadan now has more malls than anyone can count which are owned by the indigenes. So with this, the indigenes learn to compete with the best and are also able to be part of the best. They are not going about competing with 2 by 2 shops.`

Hope you can understand that.

Onitsha has less land and it's well build up no land wasted, Ibadan has large land, bungalows are scattered everywhere with wasted spaces everywhere, it's like Onitsha building 100 , 4 to 6 storey buildings on one hectare of land and Ibadan building 100 bungalow scattered on 5 hectare of land

I repeat it's a win win for Onitsha and a lose for Ibadan, shoprite wins Ibadan people lose, thousands of Onitsha traders win and it's a win win for all

Honestly, I don't know but should be around 9 million.

Same reason no South West city is not up to 5 million yet Lagos is more than 15 million, commerce is the biggest attraction in the developing world, both Onitsha and Lagos are filled with markets.

So the population of the city can't spread out right?
As I pointed above, the city's population hardly spread out in developing countries. The reason is simple - lacking adequate transport system to link two cities.
Europe for example has fast rail systems, a very cheap and suitable transport system that can easily link not just cities but countries whereas we lack such in Nigeria. We don't even have a good road network and traffic congestion in booming cities can be irritating. Travelling from Onitsha to Owerri for example can be hetic - you will waste hours in Onitsha - Owerri Road (at Onitsha) alone

Who is talking of landmass here? There is no adequate interlinking of Nigerian cities.
Onitsha to Awka for example will cost about 600 (to and fro). Does it make sense to live in Awka and be wasting money on transport if you can find a good affordable apartment in one of those numerous 5 storey buildings in Onitsha?
Monthly transport cost from Awka to Onitsha - 18k
Average monthly rent in Onitsha - 20k.
Let's not even bring Owerri or Enugu to evaluation, you get the point now?

Also, whenever something comes up you lot will start shouting stupid Ogun IGR, this no dey tire una sef?

I don't care about any igr, this thread is about the most built up cities on earth and Onisha happens to be on top list.
Why exactly is this costing you lots sleepless night?

If someone is discussing about Nigeria cuties person go dey mention Ota.

It is clear you guys have nothing tangible to say here. Lemme return to the board I have been active on.
Ota with less than 400 000 people makes more money than your Onitsha with 6.9 million
SW GDP (without Lagos) is higher than SE

Let that sink in grin

SW has more land
Demographia made a mistake
There's no way Onitsha will be 7m
I may be rational but I'm no fool
Please have u been to onitsha before? If not then I'll advice u ignore all these online noise and take a trip to onitsha, then u can come here and oppose the statistics released by demographia...
It's the Nigerian Government that have been making mistake all these years due to hatred and sentiment. And note there's difference between size(land mass) and density (persons per square km)
