Its a useless course. Just study finance or accounting and you will be good to work in any sector, including banking.

Even if your accounting graduate you will still do your ICAN or ANAN to get to level 9 so what are you talking about. a graduate of finance with ICAN will be considered first before a graduate of bsc accounting only. To the best of my knowledge i prefer finance to economics as a course.
she was told she couldnt proceed beyond grade level 9 with her banking and finance degree. I dont know if the same applies to those who have bsc accounting.

I read banking and finance both in first and second degrees and also warming up for a third degree in same course.

If you study BKF, you can work as an accountant especially if you know how to use Accounting software, you can also work as a finance officer in any organization that has the department. After studying it, get an ICAN, ANAN or ACCA certification. Work in any organization that has a good Accounting department, learn financial modelling, learn advance excel, if you are still young get a CFA certification. Then the sky is your starting point. Come and thank me later because you will be swimming in millions, and remember to pay your tithe to me .

Almost all courses in the Nigerian universities are useless because "this is Nigeria". Follow your heart and work out your destiny.

Learn Accounting software

Learn advance excel
Learn financial modelling

Since yesterday front page has been bombarded with topics like the above, "which course is lucrative" etc. But I'll like to show everyone the best parameters to judge the lucrativeness of a course which includes the following;

a) Relevance/Perceived Relevance to the society

b) Legal protection ie not just anyone is licenced to practice the course except those who studied the course

c) Population of those who studied the course

If your course is deficient of any of the above, it won't be termed a lucrative course irrespective of the years of study etc.
For instance, If your course is legally protected with few practitioners and not perceived to be relevant to the society, it won't be seen as lucrative for example dentistry, law etc

If your course is relevant, with few practitioners but not legally protected, it won't also be seen as lucrative for example Bsc Anatomy (my first degree), Bsc Physiology, Engineering etc.

If your course is relevant, legally protected but has a lot of graduates who studied it, it won't also be termed as lucrative example Medicine, Law etc.

It's usually worse when a course has a combination of the above, hence courses like Political science etc are not deemed lucrative.

Pharmacy is among the few courses one could term as lucrative because it doesn't fall under any of the above category, but trust Nigeria, it's just a matter of time especially number 2.

The major disadvantage is that if you doing it because people say it is good, you will fail.

The major advantage is that if you are doing it because you truly love it, you will excel and eventually hammer.

FINANCE not banking & finance..

You don't even need to go to school to learn finance and that's the truth..

Develop yourself, read & self eductate.... start to manage the little portfolio you have, trade & invest wisely & actively in the financial markets... What else is there to do?

When you have results you can source for bigger portfolios & funds...

Our mentality in nigeria is just closed into go to school & get a job & work 9-5 till you drop dead....Fvvck that!!

This is Nigeria, there are NO useless courses (absolutely none). Just make sure you get the best grades (1st class or 2:1). Choose any course where you can make your best grade.

Someone that studied language and graduated with 1st class stands a better chance of getting a good job at a corporate organization job than someone who studied Accounting and graduated with a 2:2.

Your course is mostly insignificant in Naija (except for specialized professionals like Medicine, law e.t.c.) but your grade is VERY important.
This is nothing, but the truth.

I will rather advise you to deep further and see what banking and finance is all about.

Some of you don't even know what banking and finance is all about, just because you see banking in the course, you are opening your mouth to talk waaa. What about the finance part? do you know how many financial institutions we have in this country? It's not by force to work in the bank. Studying banking and finance is not a limitation.

Banking and Finance, unlike some ignorant claim above is quite versatile. The banking doesn't sit alone, you have the finance part that involves a wide variety of functions like;
Finance officers
Portfolio management
Investment banking
Credit advisors

You can even branch into Audit and Accounts. It's your choice to succeed. Do not base it on failures and ignoramus.
Don't mind them, they are just commenting because they know nothing about the course.

Dear poster
Don't waste your precious time studying mono course such as, banking and finance. In Nigeria, it is tailored for working only in banking industry, finance aspect of it is fancy. There is no relevant topics.

Instead, opt for Accountancy, business administration or marketing / insurance. Whereas Accountancy and insurance are professional courses. They re wider and still give you great opportunity to work in banking industry and nonbanking financial institutions like asset management, pension, etc

Accounting is a king. It is a versatile course that combines all aspect of management courses plus mathematics in solving financial problems of any business.

I wish you good luck

I believe you can read any course and still be successful.
All that matters is your drive, passion, creativity, skills and above all, GOD.
So YES, it is a good course. But beyond the course, you need to be fired up for SUCCESS.

Don't be deceived when you hear Banking and Finance, It is Banking majorly. If you doubt me ask those who studied Geography and Regional Planning, Accounting and Finance, Sociology and Anthropology, Medicine and Surgery etc. The truth is that, while the former is the core subject upon which first degree is based, the latter shows a specialist area that is also offered in the same department/university perhaps at postgraduate level. In some cases, the latter is not reflected in your degree result. NOTE I said in SOME CASES. Where it may appear, it is there to deceive the less informed members of the public.
Come to think of it, how practicable is it for anyone to earn two distinct degrees within 4years that is the same time to earn one.
Untill very recently, there was no recognition or career path for graduates of Banking and Finance in the public service. Please find out
In summary, Bank and Finance is not popular and of lesser prospect. Accountancy may be a better option.

Very simple. Are you working in any government organisation now and bearing the designation of a "Finance Officer"? Yes, you can be subsumed by other titles but certainly NOT Banking or Finance officer.
An Accounting graduate's designation ranges from Accounting officer II to Director of finance. Same can be said of either Public or Bus Admin graduates raising from Admin Officer II to Director of Admin. This is unlike Banking and Finance where there is no professional career path in the government Scheme of Service. Anybody can be a banker and anyone with finance background, a financial expert. Simple put, An Accounting graduate can be a banker or financial analyst but a Banking and Finance graduate cannot be an Accountant.

My friend with B.Sc in banking and finance is currently in a government secondary school as a bursar and seriously rising in her career. If you have a B.Sc in banking and finance joined with Ican or Anan certification, you can attend to any level you want to attend to in your career. I know of an uncle who read Banking and finance, and also a chartered accountant who owns a chartered Accounting firm, infact he has passed the business to his children and the man is so good in auditing work. An aunty who is currently among the current council members in ICAN at national level, she has bank and finance both in her first degree and second degree, A person who ready Banking and finance and has ICAN is better equipped than someone who read only Accounting with ICAN. Because the former can handle and understand financial modelling and analysis. Accounting students were not taught to analyze businesses school. An accounting graduate cannot analyse your business except he learnt that from somewhere. And who says that government work is more lucrative than private work? It is only Nigeria that people are paying millions as bribe just to get a government job. In this era of mergers and aqusitions, startups and entrepreneurship, any Banking and finance graduate who knows her onus will make it, but the person needs to be well equip with the right certifications and skills.
Have you even thought of treasury management, this is a pure finance field and one can get the certification from CIBN. Risk management another good Field, capital market, these are finance core specialty. If I start to mention areas, infact, the whole page will be filled. So, pls allow the young man to follow his passion. If certain courses like sociology, psychology, religious studies etc still exist in Nigeria universities, I don't know by banking and finance won't exist. Please before you make assertions ask questions or investigate.
