The pounds people mention may seem high but the monthly bills and living expenses in the UK are very high too for example if your monthly net pay is £2,000 and your Rent for a 1 bed flat is £900, Council Tax £100, Gas and electricity £100, Water £40, Broadband and Tv Licence £60, Travel £150 and you havent added car insurance + petrol if you have a car and feeding and so you'll see that at the end of the day you may not be able to save much out of the £2,000 net pay and a lot of employees in the UK even with good wages still depend on credit cards and overdrafts and its very hard to see an employee in the UK that has savings worth 3 times of their monthly net pay .

So the grass may seem greener on the other side but is it really greener ?? Not all that glitters is gold .

But I'm more particular about people trying to move to the UK from Nigeria.

What Frank is trying to say is that if you are comfortable in Nigeria dont sell all your assets and move abroad expecting a much better life. It might be the biggest mistake aof your life and the shame of going back with nothing is why most stay and live a hard live in the west. His message is not for everyone. .. But like you said..

Imagine, a couple with a take home of £5k and expenses of about 2k-3k. They can easily save 2k per month

I think it's all about contentment. Use credit cards as debit cards and don't buy what you can't afford.

When I screen potential tenants, I expect an income of 4 times rent as that's what my insurance requires (I have rent guarantee insurance) which means I have to ask for the monthly income and proof of it. So yes, expect to also send in payslips or bank statements to back up the amount you say you earn.

Comparing cost of living in the UK and Nigeria is difficult.
This is because most people in Nigeria unfortunately are not living at the same standard as the average person in the UK is (in terms of access to decent education, healthcare, infrastructure, etc.). Taxation might seem high in developed countries, but a lot of people would gladly pay developed country taxation if that would provide them developed-country amenities. And everything has a knock on effect, for instance, if you want to earn decent wages yourself, you have to realise that means increasing wages for everyone in terms of a good minimum living wage, so one cant expect to get cheap childcare/domestic service, for instance, which in turn pushes up cost of living, and so on.

Yes thats what im trying to say. You have got to compare like for like. Bottom line is if you want to live the same standard of living in Nigeria as the Uk with just the necessary basics. Nigeria is more expensive.

I live in Greater Manchester. It is about 30-35 mins drive from Manchester. Train is similar. Husby and I work in Manchester, so we do the journey almost every work day before Covid.
